Assignment Number 2

1. Given Table 1 below in which health, education and standard of living of Malawi and the
value associated with each indicator is illustrated.

Table 1: Human Development Hypothetical data for Malawi

Dimension Indicator Value Min Max

Health Life expectancy in years 70.0 25 85
Education Expected years of schooling 13.0 0 18
Mean year of education 10.2 0 15
Standard of living Gross National Income (2017 PPP$) 7,875 100 75000
Gross National Product (2017 PPP$) 8,520 100 75000

a. Calculate the Human Development Index (HDI) for Malawi, providing a step-by-step
explanation of each calculation, including any assumptions or standardization
processes applied to indicators that span different scales (e.g., logarithmic
transformation of income). Based on the resulting HDI value, critically interpret the
human development standing of Malawi relative to potential country categories (low,
medium, high, or very high development), discussing any observed limitations of the
HDI calculation in capturing Malawi’s actual quality of life. (15 Marks)

b. Discuss the concept of "loss due to inequality" as it relates to the HDI and explain
how it differs conceptually and mathematically from the "coefficient of human
inequality." Use examples to illustrate how each metric informs understanding of
inequality in a country's human development.
