People & Cultures that
Practice in Buddhism
Buddhism is originated in India and
practiced by millions around the world.
China has the largest number of Buddhists,
it is popular in central and Southeast Asia.
Buddhists believe the law of cause and
effect cycle of rebirth. They also practice
vegetarianism as a way to live a nonviolent
life. Some symbols of Buddhism include the
lotus flower and the dharma wheel.
Monks in Indonesia release a lantern to
celebrate the birth of Gautama Buddha, the
founder of Buddhism.
Basic, core beliefs of the
religion
They believe that humans can become free from
suffering through meditation and following the
Buddha's teachings. Buddhists hold that
enlightenment, or nirvana, can be attained by
meditation, hard work—both spiritual and
physical—and good conduct. The precepts are
commitments to abstain from killing living
beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and
intoxication
Holy places ● Lumbini, where the Buddha
was born
● Bodh Gaya, where he gained
enlightenment
● Sarnath, where he
pronounced his first
teachings
● Kushinagara, where he died
and attained final nirvana
The Tripiṭaka is composed of three main categories of
texts that collectively constitute the Buddhist canon: the

Holy Book Sutra Piṭaka, the Vinaya Piṭaka, and the Abhidhamma
Piṭaka.

Sutras Piṭaka were the first teachings of the Buddha in

aphoristic or narrative format. The historical Buddha
delivered all of his sermons in Magadhan. These sermons
were rehearsed orally during the meeting of the First
Buddhist council just after the Parinibbana of the Buddha.
The teachings continued to be transmitted orally until
eventually being written down in the first century BCE.

The Vinaya Piṭaka focuses on the rules and regulations, or

the morals and ethics, of monastic life that range from
dress code and dietary rules to prohibitions of certain
personal conducts.

The seven books of the Abhidhamma Pitaka, the third

division of the Tipitaka, offer an extraordinarily detailed
analysis of the basic natural principles that govern mental
and physical processes. Whereas the Sutta and Vinaya
Pitakas lay out the practical aspects of the Buddhist path
to Awakening, the Abhidhamma Pitaka provides a
theoretical framework to explain the causal underpinnings
of that very path.
Once there was a prince named Siddhartha Gautama.
A short history of Buddhism He lived a very lavish life. He stayed in his palace in
India for the beginning of his life. Eventually, when he
left his palace, he saw human suffering and people in
horrible condition. He then made it his life mission to
find out why this happens. He starved himself to
experience suffering himself to see if that was the
cause, however, it was not. Then, he gave away all his
possessions to the suffering and this still did not stop
it. He eventually found out, after 6 years of meditation,
that the best was the Middle Path, which means to
have everything in moderation to prevent suffering.
Eventually, he taught this theory to people and it
gained popularity and spread.
Rituals
Examples of rituals,
- Devotion - Showing devotion to sacred objects
observances, or holidays - Chanting - Chanting sacred phrases

the third lunar month.
- Vesak - One of the most important buddhist
festivals, the birthday of the Buddha.
- Asalha Puja - takes place in july, on the full
moon of the Asadah month.
- Buddhist New Year - 3 days after the first full
moon of april, Buddhists celebrate the New
Year.
The 3 main religious branches of
-Theravada Buddhism;
Buddhism are:
● This is one of the oldest forms of Buddhism and follow the
oldest texts that were written in Pali by monks from Sri Lanka
during 1 CE. Before it was written it was actually
● They recognise the Buddha as a exemplary role model yet
enlightenment is only for monks who pursue the path of
Shakyamuni.
● This is the dominant branch of Buddhism

-Mahayana Buddhism;

● Started as a philosophical movement supporting the idea of

universal salvation
● This branch has spread to South Asia but has the biggest
effect in East Asia

-Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism;

● Developed in 500-600 CE in India as a branch of Mahayana

Buddhism
● This division of Buddhism was popular in South and Central
Asia

Several conflicts that
● During the reunification of japan in the late 1500’s in
the sengoku period, the Japanese targeted Buddhist

occured because of ●
temples like the temple Enryaku-ji
There is another example that is actually much

Buddhism(even more recent being in 2009. A radical group of

Buddhist Monks formed “The Buddhist Power

though it's one of the Group” which promotes violence against the Hindu
Tamil populous in Sri Lanka, Muslim immigrants

most pacifistic) and even other Buddhists who tried calling them
out. This is not so much caused by Buddhism but
supported as it was done by radicalists.
● Another radicalism incident is the situation in
Burma. Ultra nationalist monks, led by Ashin
WIrathu, are persecuting a minority Muslim group
called “Rohingya”. The leader even gave himself the
nickname “The Burmese Bin Laden”. The group has
attacked mosques, burned homes, and assaulted
people.

I want to point out as a disclaimer these three cases are

the very rare few and Buddhists are extremely pacifistic
The Enryaku-ji Massacre
and these examples are just the 1%.
