1 Welcome​ ZEISS

1 Welcome
This Instruction Manual describes how to activate floating licenses for ZEISS software products.
Floating licenses enable multiple users inside a network to use a single software license for a ZEISS
software product. The described workflows in this document all require the ZEISS License Man-
agement Tool and are designed for administrators of license servers.

2 Preperations
2.1 Entitlement Certificate

When you purchase ZEISS software, an entitlement certificate is sent to you via email, as a print-
out in the delivery package, or as a PDF file on an external storage device. The Entitlement Certifi-
cate contains all available licenses and their respective information (e.g. Activation ID/Product Key,
Entitlement ID).

NOTICE
Only floating licenses whose name ends with FLic (e.g SW ZEN analyser 3.5 FLic) can be acti-
vated via ZEISS License Management Tool.

1 Activation ID/Product Key
This twelve-character ID is needed for the activation of the respective license.

2 Product
This is the specific designation of the product license.

3 Order Number
This is your specific order confirmation number.

4 Expiration
This is the expiration date of the product license. Regular license purchases do not have
an expiration date and are marked as permanent by default.

5 Seat Count
This is the number of simultaneously possible license activations.

6 Entitlement ID/Certificate Number


This ID is used for the activation of all licenses within the entitlement certificate. It con-
sists of your order confirmation number and a randomized six-figure number.

2.2 Setting up the License Server

This chapter describes how to download and install the Sentinel RMS License Manager and the
Zeiss License Management Tool via Zeiss Microscopy Installer.
Note: Please choose a suitable computer to be the license server.

Prerequisite ü You have installed ZEISS Microscopy Installer.


1. Start Zeiss Microscopy Installer.

2. In the Install tab, select Sentinel RMS License Manager.


3. Select all components.

4. Click Install.
à A progress dialog opens.
5. To finish installation, click Close.

3 Activating a Floating License


3.1 Activating a PC-bonded License Online

This chapter describes how to activate a PC-bonded license on a license server with internet con-
nection.
Note:Activate the license on the computer on which you have installed the License Manager
Server. Either by local log on or log on via remote desktop.

Prerequisite ü You have received an Activation ID/Product Key with your entitlement certificate.
1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch into Network Mode, click Local.

3. Click Activate for a PC-Bonded license.


4. Activate PC-Bonded checkbox.
5. Enter the Activation ID/Product Key in the respective input field and click Activate li-
cense.
à Note: An Activation ID activates a single license while an Entitlement ID/Certificate Num-
ber activates all licenses on your Entitlement Certificate.

à The available licenses are shown in the License Overview.

à Only floating licenses can be activated in the License Management Tool. Floating licenses
have FLic as part of their product name (e.g. SW ZEN analyzer 3.5 FLic).

3.2 Activating a PC-bonded License Offline

This chapter describes how to activate a PC-bounded license on a license server without internet
connection. For the offline activation, you need the following:

§ A license server without internet connection (see left column).


§ Another computer with internet connection (see right column).
§ An external storage device (see middle column).

1 Generate an Activation Request File by entering the Activation ID/Product Key in


the License Management Tool.

2 Transfer the Activation Request File from the license server computer to the computer
with an internet connection via an external storage device.

3 Generate an Activation Response File by uploading the Activation Request File to


the Zeiss Software Licensing webpage.

4 Transfer the Activation Response File from the computer with an internet connection
to the license server computer via an external storage device.

5 Activate your license by importing the Activation Response File in the License Man-
agement Tool on your license server computer.

3.2.1 Generating a PC-bonded Activation Request File

Prerequisite ü An Activation ID/Product Key from your entitlement certificate is required.


ü An external storage device is required.
ü Your license server computer has no internet connection.
1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch to Network Mode, click Local.

3. Activate PC-Bonded checkbox.

4. Enter one or more Activation IDs/Product Keys in the respective input field and click Ac-
tivate license.

à The Activation Request File is generated. Choose a storage location.


5. Save the file on an external storage device (e.g. memory stick).
à This file can be transferred to a computer with a connection to the internet for generat-
ing a Activation Response File.

3.2.2 Generating a PC-bonded Activation Response File via ZEISS Software Licensing
Webpage

Prerequisite ü A computer with an internet connection is required.


ü An external storage device is required.
ü An Activation Request File has been generated and transferred to the online computer.
1. Open an internet browser and enter the https://swl.zeiss.com/ URL to access the ZEISS
Software Licensing page.
à The Activation tab on the ZEISS Software Licensing page is shown.

2. Click Choose File and select the Activation Request File.


à The additional data of your license is shown on the ZEISS Software Licensing page.
3. Click Activate.
à The Activation Response File is generated.
4. Save the file on an external storage device (e.g. memory stick).
à This file can be transferred to your license server computer without a connection to the
internet for activating a license offline.

3.2.3 Processing a PC-bonded Activation Response File

Prerequisite ü An Activation Response File has been generated and transferred to the offline license
server computer.
1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch into Network mode, click Local.

3. Click Import and specify the file path to the Activation Response File, click Open.
The license is activated.

4 Connecting Clients with a License Server


This chapter describes how to connect a client via the ZEISS Microscopy Installer with a license
server. If you want to enable a software license on a client system, then you only need to follow
the instructions below.

Prerequisite ü You have set up a license server, see Setting up the License Server [} 6].
ü You have installed and opened the Zeiss Microscopy Installer with admin rights on the
client.
ü You have activated the required licenses, see Activating a Floating License [} 7].
1. On the top right, click , and then click Open License Settings.
à The Manage License dialog opens.

2. In the License Server URL field enter the URL (fully-qualified name) of the license server.
à For example, the fully-qualified name of a license server could be host1.example.com.
host1 being the hostname of the license server and example.com being the domain of
the company.
3. Click Test.
à Under Connection, you can see the connection data and wether the connection was
successful or not. Under Licenses, you can see the available licenses.
4. Click Apply.

5 Returning a Floating License


5.1 Returning a License Online

This chapter describes how to return a license on a license server with internet connection.

Prerequisite ü You have activated a license/licenses.


1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch into Network mode, click Local.

3. Select the license you want to return and click Return.

à The license is automatically returned.

5.2 Returning a License Offline

This chapter describes how to return a license on a license server without internet connection. For
the offline activation, you need the following:

§ A license server without internet connection (see left column).


§ Another computer with internet connection (see right column).

§ An external storage device (see middle column).

1 Copy the Activation ID via the License Manager Tool on a license server.

2 Transfer the Activation ID to the computer with an internet connection via an external
storage device.

3 Generate a Permission Ticket File via the Zeiss Software Licensing webpage.

4 Transfer the Permission Ticket File to the license server via an external storage device.

5 Generate a Revocation Proof File via the License Management Tool on the license
server.

6 Transfer the Revocation Proof File to the computer with an internet connection via an
external storage device.

7 Finalize the return process by uploading the Revocation Proof File to the Zeiss Soft-
ware Licensing webpage.

5.2.1 Generating a Permission Ticket File

Prerequisite ü You have activated a license.


ü The license server has no internet connection.
ü A computer with an internet connection is required.
ü An external storage device is required.
1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch into Network mode, click Local.

3. Select the license which you want to return and click Return.

à A message with the Activation ID is displayed.

4. Save the Activation ID on an external storage device (e.g. memory stick). Alternatively,
manually write down the Activation ID and continue with Step 7.
5. To copy the Activation ID, click Yes.
à The Explorer opens for import of the Permission Ticket, you can leave it open for later.
6. Transfer the Activation ID to a computer with internet connection.
7. Open the ZEISS Software Licensing website.

8. Click Revocation tab.


9. Enter the Activation ID and click Revoke.

à A Permission Ticket File is generated.


10. Save the Permission Ticket File on an external storage device (e.g. memory stick).
à This file can be transferred to your license server computer without internet connection
for generating a Revocation Proof File.

5.2.2 Generating a Revocation Proof File

Prerequisite ü A Permission Ticket File has been generated and transferred to the license server computer
without internet connection.
ü An external storage device is required.
1. Start License Management Tool.

à To switch into Network mode, click Local.

2. Select the license you want to return and click Return.

à A message is displayed.

3. Click Yes and select the Permission Ticket File.


à The Revocation Proof File is generated.
4. Save the file on an external storage device (e.g. memory stick).
à This file can be transferred to a computer with internet connection to revoke the license.

5.2.3 Processing a Revocation Proof

Prerequisite ü You have generated and transferred a Revocation Proof File to a computer with internet
connection.
1. Open the Zeiss Software Licensing website.
2. Click Revocation tab.
3. Click Choose File and open the Revocation Proof File.
4. To finalize the return process, click Upload.

6 Administration of Network Clients


This chapter describes how to use the administrative features of the ZEISS License Management
Tool and the Sentinel RMS License Manager Administration Tool.

6.1 Closing a Session via ZLMT

Note: You can perform session management only on the computer on which you have installed
the License Management Server.

Prerequisite ü ZEISS License Management Tool is installed on the license server.


ü There are active sessions of network user clients.
1. Start License Management Tool.

2. To switch into Network mode, click Local.

3. Click Sessions.

à The overview of active session is displayed.

4. Select the session you want to close and click Close session.

6.2 Sentinel RMS License Manager Administration Tool

The Sentinel RMS License Manager Administration Tool gives you an overview of all licenses
in use in addition to further information and statistics.

7.1 How can I shutdown the License Server?

To shutdown the License Server, open the Sentinel RMS License Manager Administration Tool. In
the Defined Server List, right click LOCALHOST and click Shutdown Server. Alternatively, you
can also use the Management Console to shutdown the server.

7.2 Windows Defender opens at first start of ZEN, which checkbox do I click?

If Windows Defender opens at first start of ZEN, click on the Private networks checkbox and
uncheck Public Networks. Click Allow access to continue.

7.3 How can I transfer a License?

Prerequisite ü Your ZEISS software license has been activated.


ü A second PC is available.
1. Return the activated license on the PC where the license is to be transferred from.
à For returning the license online, see Returning a License Online [} 13].
à For returning the license offline, see Returning a License Offline [} 13].
2. Activate the license on the PC where the license is to be transferred to.
à For activating a license online, see Activating a PC-bonded License Online [} 7].
à For activating a license offline, see Activating a PC-bonded License Offline [} 8].
The license is transferred from the first PC to the second PC.

7.4 How can I recover a "lost" license from a broken hard-drive?

Contact your ZEISS Microscopy service representative. They will vet your case and revoke the li-
cense on the platform, so that you can activate the license on a new computer.
