Tutorial Researcher Identity Memo 2021
Tutorial Researcher Identity Memo 2021
Readings:
• Patton (2015), Module 80, Credibility of the Inquirer, p. 700-709 (on e-reserve).
• Earlier in the term you read Creswell’s (2009) section on Philosophical
Worldviews, p. 5-11. Read this again as it is relevant to this assignment.
• If you would like to better understand how a researcher considered reflexivity in
her study, read Berger, R. (2015). Now I see it, now I don’t: Researcher’s position
and reflexivity in qualitative research, Qualitative Research, 15(2), 219-234. This
offers a tangible example of how to apply reflexivity in a real research project; to
access this article, go to the library site and copy/paste the journal title in
“search everything”.
If your research project utilizes qualitative methods, you will have a section in the research
proposal that includes your background and approach, describing your reflexive position.
Reflect upon YOU, articulate your background (biographical sketch), motivation, and approach
to your intended area of research, as these factors will influence your proposed research
project. The opening introductory paragraph of this assignment should include a brief quote
about reflexivity from our readings or others on the topic of reflexivity. Keep in mind that
when a direct quote is used, the author, year of publication and the page number where the
quote was sourced MUST be cited (See the APA Guide posted on the D2L shell).
In this assignment, it is necessary that you provide reference to your research topic (i.e.,
sustainability), an acknowledgement of your life experience to build an awareness as to how it
might influence your research approach.
As a matter of good writing practice, we would like you to develop the habit of including an
advance organizer in your introductory paragraph (See https://www.aje.com/en/arc/when-its-
best-be-explicit-using-advance-organizers-structure-your/). This is not a section heading, it is
typically the last sentence in your opening paragraph that introduces your reader to what is
coming up, i.e., The following section begins with a summary of my background, motivation and
approach to the research.
Keep in mind, this is not a static exercise, your personal research position will change as you
gain life experience and do more research. The rubric that we will use to assess this assignment
is posted. Please review.
