Basic TCM Treatment Protocols for Fibromyalgia

When I first started my practice, acupuncture was perceived mainly as a pain reliever. So I treated
a lot of patients who suffered with chronic pain or those who just injured themselves. I saw a lot of
women with Fibromyalgia. For years, they were told it was all in their head and nothing was wrong
with them!

Over the years, I’ve seen patients who responded very well to acupuncture, especially if a healthy
diet was incorporated into the treatment. Over 85% of fibromyalgia patients are women, and
most suffer from chronic fatigue, IBS, anxiety and or depression, an accumulation of stress and a
diet lacking in nutrients.

Research shows Fibromyalgia can either be genetic or due to an emotional or physical trauma.
Which correlates with Chinese medicine which defines the causes as emotions, weak
Essence/Jing, trauma and stress!

Supplements such as Magnesium, Fish oils, and Vitamin D are quite beneficial, as well as adopting
a low FODMAP diet.

Acupuncture is fantastic to relieve pain, move blood, calm the mind for those with anxiety and to
promote better sleep. Below I created a quick Basic TCM Treatment Protocol for Fibromyalgia.

Let me know what you think and keep rocking it using TCM!

PS: Have you seen my Chinese Medicine Treatments Made Easy book yet? It covers over 160
syndromes treatments using acupuncture points, herbal formulas, ear points, diet and more!

Sp 21 has to always be part of the acupuncture protocol for fibromyalgia, as it’s the major LUO
connecting point of the Spleen connecting the SP meridian to all the muscular regions of the body.
There are 18 trigger points on the body which tend to be painful when pressed, and may spread
pain to other body parts. I often needle these points as well!

Hi Clara
Thank you for another great protocol.
My missis suffors all the aboves signs mentioned. I press these points during a shiatsu
treatment, wich relieves her for a few hours to one day en it starts all over.
We had a very hot summer inBelgium and i noticed that my wife had some trouble
breating. Also during medical visits with diferent doctors we noticed that it is deficult for
my wife’s body to incorporate oxygen properly.
She will start taking Hcl plus for adjusting acidic level in the stomac. Wich can improve the
intrisic factor for better absorption off vitamin B12.

Many greetings

Jo

Thank you for this information! I am currently a 2nd year acupuncture student, we have
one patient that comes into the clinic for fibromyalgia. I understand there are certain
points that are sensitive and may cause some discomfort for people, but this patient does
not want particular needles placed because she does not like the way the needles feel.
She tries to dictate the tx. What is the best way to guide her and make her feel safe so
that we can use the proper protocol? She has been coming to the student clinic for years
but states she is still in pain and not being relieved of her symptoms. What is the best way
to handle a patient like her? I appreciate your help!

Hi Gina,

Fibromyalgia’s patients diet is crucial to help the pain and the mind gut connection.
Also if she hates needles on her pain area, then don’t needle the pain areas. I would
focus on calming the mind mostly with patients who’s cortisol level is too high and are
too sensitive. Like Yin Tang, Ht 7, Kd 6, St 40, Sp 4…
Hope this helps
