B h a ra t S p a c e Mission

India's jo urney in space exploration has deep roots, dating back

to ancient tim es w hen cosm ic know ledge w as recorded in
ancient scriptures. However, it w as in the 5th century w ith
Aryabhata's contributions that a m ore precise, m athem atical
approach to astronom y em erged, steering it aw ay from
m ysticism and its focus on the calendar. Later scholars like
Bhaskara II and Varaham ihira advanced these insights, paving
the w a y for m odern achievem ents in space exploration. The
influence of the Indian astronom ers did not end here, as their
space exploration continued to be part of the contem porary
astronom ers. The Indian National Com m ittee for Space
Research (INCOSPAR) w as established in 1962, under the
leadership of Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai. The sam e year, Thum ba
Equatorial Rocket Launching Station w as also established near
Thiruvananthapuram . B h arat’s Space Quest is one of the oldest
in the world and has played a crucial role in national
developm ent. Bharat has accom plished 125 spacecraft m issions
so far, including three nanosatellites and one m icrosatellite; 94
launch m issions; tw o re-entry missions; 431 foreign satellites
belonging to 34 countries; 15 students’ satellites; and three
satellites realised by Indian private players.

These include 53 Indian satellites in different Low Earth Orbits

(LEO) and Geosynchronous Earth Orbits (GEO). Bharat has also
launched m issions to Mars and the Moon. Recently, Bharat
successfully launched Chandrayaan-3 and has becom e the
fourth country in the world to land on the moon, and th e first to
land the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover near the South Pole
of the Moon. Furtherm ore, on 2 Septem ber 2023, Bharat
launched the Aditya-Ll m ission to study th e Sun.

On Ju ly 2, 2024, Aditya-Ll spacecraft has com pleted its first halo

orbit around the Sun-Earth LI point. The Aditya-Ll mission is an
Indian solar observatory at Lagrangian point LI, launched on
Septem ber 2, 2023 and w as inserted in its targeted halo orbit on
Jan u a ry 6, 2024. This satellite reached its designated place,

i
Lagrange 1 (LI), to rem ain stable betw een the Sun and Earth in
Jan u a ry 2024. This cosm ic exploration resulted in innovations
and technological spin-offs that have benefitted the society at
large.
Significance of the Day

India becam e the fourth country to land on the moon and the
first to reach its southern polar region on August 23, 2023. To
honour this landm ark achievem ent, Hon'ble Prim e Minister
Shri Narendra Modi announced A ugust 23 as "National Space
Day".

India has celebrated its m aiden National Space Day [NSpD-

2024] on A ugust 23, 2024 w ith the th em e "Touching Lives
w hile Touching th e M oon: India's S p a ce Sa g a."

A myriad of events unfolded, highlighting India's rem arkable

achievem ents in space, profound benefits to th e society, and
boundless opportunities for people from all w alks of life to
engage w ith the Bharat Space Quest. These celebrations
culm inated into the main event at New Delhi on A ugust 23,
2024.
