Introduction
The BAC151C is a Video Microscope Raman Sampling System which includes an integrated
camera and precision three-dimensional axis adjustment controls. Precise Raman sampling and
camera monitoring of the beam will show image details of the sampling spot. The image of the
sample and sampling spots can be easily recorded and included in test reports together with
spectral data by way of BWSpec® software.
The BAC151C comes with one 20x objective and is attachable to the 4-port turret system on the
Microscope Sampling Stage. The Camera head of the BAC151C is compatible with B&W Tek
Raman probes, BAC100/ BAC102 (Lab Grade).

Hardware Installation
Installing the Camera
• Remove the “Protective Cover” from the bottom of the Camera Head and from the top of
the microscope sampling stage.

• Connect the camera onto the microscope sampling stage.
o Pay close attention to the connections. They have interlocking mechanics that
must be attached in a specific direction.
• Tighten the lock screw (knurling screw) to secure the Camera Head to the microscope
sampling stage.

Camera Head Cable Attachment
• The Microscope sampling stage will have a 5V DC SMA Cable with a Male SMA Jack fed
through the top of the main body.
• Attach the SMA end to the 5V DC SMA Female Jack on the rear of the Camera Head.
• Attach the USB A-B Cable (B side) to the Camera Head and then (A side) to a USB
2.0/3.0 port on your computer.

Illumination LED Cable Attachment
There are two methods which can be used to attach the 5V DC AUX Cable to the sampling stage
for controlling the LED for illuminating samples on the BAC151C.
If you have a Raman system purchased from B&W Tek which has a 5V DC AUX Cable SMA Jack,
you can use Method #1 below. Otherwise, use Method #2 with the external 5V DC Power Supply.
Method #1
• Attach the SMA AUX Cable to the 5V DC Female SMA Jack located at the bottom rear of
the Microscope sampling stage.
• Connect the other end of the SMA Power Cable to the 5V DC Female SMA
Jack on the back panel of the Raman System.
• Make sure the switch on the microscope body is turned to the ON position.
• In the BWSpec software, enable the BAC151C Plugin in Plugin Manager.
You can control the LED Illumination through the Acquire Control window.
Check the BWSpec User Manual for more information.

Method #2
• Attach the SMA to DC Power Cable to the SMA Jack located at the bottom rear of the
microscope sampling stage.

• Connect the 5V Power Supply to the DC receptacle of the SMA-to-DC Power Cable.

• Connect the 5V Power Supply to an electrical outlet.
• Make sure the switch on the microscope body is turned to the ON position.
Note: When using this method, the Illumination LED cannot be controlled with the
BWSpec software. Instead, use the switch on the microscope to turn the LED light on and
off.

Probe Installation
• Remove the standard shaft from the Raman probe head (BAC100/ BAC101/ BAC102)
and exchange it for the Microscope Probe Adapter.
• Grasp the shaft firmly and turn counter-clockwise to unscrew the shaft from the Raman
probe head.

• Thread the Microscope Probe Adapter into the Raman Probe Head. Hand-tighten only.

• Remove the protective cap from the “Probe Installation Port”. Insert the smooth end of the
Probe Adapter into the Microscope’s Probe Installation Port. Ensure the Probe Head sits
tight against the Installation Port.

Camera Driver Installation
Follow the steps below to manually install the camera software and drivers.
a. Install BWSpec on your computer first (refer to “290020239-BWSpec Installation
Guide” for details).
b. After BWSpec is installed, select the folder C:\BWTEK\BWSpec\Camera_bac151c.
c. Double click and run the application: SetupVid.exe.
d. Click Install.
e. Click Next to allow the Installation Wizard to install the Videology Camera on your
computer.
f. Click the Finish button to finish the installation.

g. Plug the camera’s USB Cable into a USB 2.0 Compatible Port on your computer.
h. Select Device Manager and make sure that the “Videology 20C215W NTSC Color
Camera” icon is displayed under “Imaging devices”.
i. The Microscope Camera is now ready to use in the BWSpec software.

BWSpec Software Usage
a. Open BWSpec, and from the Menu Bar go to Plug-In→ Plug-In Manager.
b. Enable BAC151C Camera Plug-in, and click the Apply and OK buttons.
c. In the BWSpec Menu bar, select . The Camera View is a new window in BWSpec
that is added next to the spectrum graph. The Camera View may be made larger or
smaller by clicking and dragging the border between the Camera View and the
spectrum graph.

BWID Software Usage
a. Open BWID software. Click Menu icon on the main window.
b. Click Program icon under the Setup menu.
c. Check “Enable Video Camera” (Note: the video does not work in off-line mode.).

d. Click the Main icon and return to the main page.
e. Click the ID button.
f. If you have “Verify Sample” and “User Input” checked, move to step i.
g. If you have “See-Through ID” checked move to step j.
h. If you have “Identify Unknown Sample” checked move to step k.
i. Enter a “Product Name” then click Next. If you have “See-Through ID” checked
move to step j.
j. Select Sample Type window appears. If using the microscope, select option ‘(A)
Direct sample measurement or sample inside thin transparent packaging’. Press
OK.

k. Check the “BAC151x Video Camera On” to activate the microscope camera.
l. Turn on the LED with the light switch. Locate and focus the sample.
m. Turn off the LED.
(Note: You must turn on/off the illumination LED manually. Unlike in BWSpec,
there is no LED control in the BWID software, and the LED does not turn off
automatically during signal or dark acquisition.)
n. Click the button “Run” to continue with acquisition of the Raman spectrum, and
the video image will disappear.

Using the Video Microscope
a. Open and run the BWSpec software and turn on the Camera View mode.
b. Select a microscope objective from the Objective Turret.

c. Enable the EPI illuminator (bright field) by switching on the LED light switch to provide
illumination to the video camera. Turn on the LED Illumination check box in BWSpec
Software’s Acquire Control.

d. When using the EPI Illuminator, there is a beam splitter 50/50 in the optical path
combining the illumination of the LED with the signal for the video camera.

e. View the video images displayed on the computer screen by running the BWSpec.
When the laser from a Raman system is in operation (lasing), a white laser spot may
be seen at the center of the viewed image. The BAC151C comes standard with 1 filter
to work with a 532nm, 785nm or 1064nm Raman System. A dual filter system
(532/785) version is also available. The filter used must match the laser wavelength in
your Raman System.
f. Adjust the Laser Selector to the appropriate filter position.
g. Use the Z-axis adjustment knobs (coarse and fine) until a clear image is achieved on
screen. Afterwards, rotate the handle of the lock ring to lock the Z position of the
stage.
h. Adjust the X and Y-axis knobs so that the excitation laser beam is targeting the
intended sample location.

Laser Beam Adjustment
Camera and laser beam alignment are completed during the production process. However, when
the Raman probe is installed the laser beam spot may have drifted from the field of view’s center.
A few simple adjustments can align the laser and provide optimum measurement results.

Laser Beam Adjustment using Hex Screws
• Refer to the Camera Head and Probe Installation instructions if the probe is not already
installed.
• Focus onto a sample of suitable material on the Sample Stage under the microscope
objective, preferably a flat sample that is easy to focus onto.
• Turn on the laser beam and observe the laser spot’s position in the camera image in the
software.
o If the laser Spot is in the center of the image, no adjustments are needed.
o If the Spot is not at the center of the image, adjustments will be needed.
• To Adjust the X-Direction and Y-Direction: first make sure that the inside two screws are
fully tightened down (highlighted in blue).
• To Adjust the X-Direction: Using the Hex Wrench, slowly tighten or loosen the outside
X-Direction screw, highlighted in Green, until the laser is aligned in the X-direction.
• To Adjust the Y-Direction Using the Hex Wrench, slowly tighten or loosen the outside
Y-Direction screw, highlighted in Yellow, until the laser is aligned in the Y-direction.
Note: Each time the probe is installed an alignment check should be made.

Accessory Option
A Tripod head assembly may be ordered separately to support the camera as a standalone.
This optional assembly includes:
• One L-Bracket
• One Thumb Screw
• The tripod itself is not included
The following steps are for installation.
• Install the thumb screw into the thread hole on the side of L-Bracket.

• Remove the Camera Head from the Microscope Stand (if Camera has been installed).
• Insert the Camera Head base into the Hexagonal Hole of L-Bracket. Tighten the Thumb
Screw to secure the Camera Head L-Bracket.

• Setup and secure the Tripod. Install the L-Bracket with the camera on the tripod through
the screws of tripod. Tighten the screw.
