Santa Maria Church, Siquijor
Welcome to Our Lady of Providence Church also known as Maria Church, a cultural and
historical landmark located on the island of Siquijor!
Maria is located on the southeastern side of Siquijor. To reach this historic site, visitors
can travel by habal-habal, tricycle, or jeepney from the main tourist areas.
Our Lady of Providence Church, a chapel dedicated to St. Rita of Cascia also known as
Santa Rita de Siquijor, was founded by Fr. Timoteo Gonzalo, who was a parish priest in 1859.
Just like other Catholic churches, Santa Maria Church has a large double door
embellished with the Ten Commandments and the images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the
Immaculate Heart of Mary.
This church is famous for its miraculous St. Rita of Cascia. Many locals believe that the
image of St. Rita leaves the church after sundown to wander around the island, and returns
before daybreak. This belief is said to be evidenced by the discovery of mud and grass on the
image's dress and feet upon its return.
