Assignment 1
Note: Write the answers in neat hand writing with all the required detailed calculations,
plots, etc. wherever applicable.
Ques 1 (a) Sketch and explain the inversions of double slider crank chain.
(b) In what way is Oldham’s coupling useful in connecting two parallel shafts when the distance between
their axes is small?
Ques 2 In a crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism, the distance between the fixed centers O and
C is 200mm. The driving crank CP is 75 mm long. The pin Q on the slotted lever, 360 mm from the fulcrum
O, is connected by a link QR 100 mm long, to a pin R on the ram. The line of stroke of R is perpendicular
to OC and intersects OC produced at a point 150 mm from C. Determine the ratio of time taken on the
cutting and return strokes.
Ques 3 The Whitworth quick return motion mechanism has the driving crank 150 mm long. The distance
between the fixed centers is 100mm. The line of stroke of the ram passes through the center of rotation of
the slotted lever whose free end is connected to the ram by connecting link. Find the ratio of time of cutting
to time of return.
Ques 4 Examine the mechanisms shown in Fig 1. and indicate the cases where unique relation between the
motions of input and output link exists. Give reasons for your answers.

Ques 5 Figure2 shows the configuration of a Whitworth Quick Return Mechanism. The lengths of the fixed
link OA and the crank OP are 200 mm and 350 mm respectively. Other lengths are AR = 200 mm and RS
= 400 mm. Find the velocity of the ram using I-center method when the crank makes an angle of 120o with
the fixed link and rotates at 10 rad/sec.
Ques 6 Figure3 shows a mechanism in which OA = 300mm, AB = 600 mm, AC = BD = 120 mm. OD is
horizontal for the given configuration. If OA rotates at 200 rpm in the clockwise direction find: (i) The
linear velocities of C and D (ii) The angular velocities of links AC and BD.
Fig 2 Fig 3
Ques 7 A mechanism of crank and slotted lever quick return motion is shown in Fig 4. If the crank rotates
counter clockwise at 120 rpm determine for the configuration shown the velocity of ram D. Also determine
the angular velocity of the slotted lever. Crank AB = 150 mm, slotted arm OC = 700 mm and link CD =
200 mm.

Ques 8 In Fig. 5, the angular velocity of the crank OA is 600 r.p.m. Determine the linear velocity of the
slider D and the angular velocity of the link BD, when the crank is inclined at an angle of 75° to the vertical.
The dimensions of various links are : OA = 28 mm ; AB = 44 mm ; BC 49 mm ; and BD = 46 mm. The
centre distance between the centres of rotation O and C is 65 mm. The path of travel of the slider is 11 mm
below the fixed point C. The slider moves along a horizontal path and OC is vertical.
Ques 9 The mechanism shown in Fig 6, has the dimensions of various links as follows: AB = DE = 150
mm, BC = CD = 450 mm, EF = 375 mm. The crank AB makes an angle of 45owith the horizontal and
rotates about A in the clockwise direction at a uniform speed of 120 rpm. The lever DC oscillates about the
fixed point D, which is connected to AB by the coupler BC. The block F moves in the horizontal guides,
being driven by link EF. Determine: (i) Velocity of the block, F (ii) angular velocity of DC (iii) rubbing
speed at the pin C which is 50mm in diameter.
Fig 5 Fig 6
6. In a mechanism shown in Figure 7, the lengths of different links are: OA = 0.2 m ; AB = 1.2 m ;
CD = 0.9 m ; and AC = CB. Determine the velocity of the slider D, if the crank OA rotates at 40 r.p.m. in
the clockwise direction. Also, calculate the angular velocity of the link CD. Use instantaneous centre
method.
