Performance Task
Static Assembly Modeling
Objective:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

▪ Utilize Boolean operations in multi-body modeling and face features.

Requirements:

▪ Browser
▪ Onshape
▪ eLMS
▪ MS Word

Procedures: (100 Points)

Leader Tasks:

1. Collaborate with your Methods of Research (research) groupmates. Your leader must create a team
in Onshape.

2. Go to Onshape → click the dropdown on your name.

→ Select STI College (or STI College II, whichever is applicable) classroom settings

→ Select Teams → Create

→ Team Name: Team name related to the title of your research, Description: Optional → Create
team → Add team members: Add your research groupmates and your CAD instructor.

3. Go back to Onshape main screen → expand Teams from the vertical menu → your team name
should appear.

4. Create a Folder → use an acronym or nickname for your research proposal as the folder name
→ Folder location: Owned by me → click Create.

5. Go to Owned by me on your Onshape main screen → open your research folder

→ click the Create dropdown → select Document → use your research title acronym or nickname as
the document name and add a “v1” at the end → Document location: your research folder → click
Create.

6. Once the document has been created, go back to your research folder → right-click on the folder →
click Share → Teams tab → click on Search names fields → select your team → set your settings
as:

→ click Share.

7. Your teammates and instructor should see:

Team Effort:
1. Discuss with the team which parts of your research prototype concept you will be working on.

2. Click View all action items beside the notification icon → click Create task → Name: name of the
task → Description: elaborate what the task will be → Assigned to: assign it to a teammate → click
Assign. Do the same for other team members or you may create a task for yourself.

Note: Do not forget to complete the task and tick the check box at the upper right when your task has
been completed.

3. View the task assigned to you; it should appear in your notification or

→ click View task at Action items
→ Role: Assigned to me or Created by me
→ Status: Open.

In the comments, do not forget to elaborate on what you did to accomplish the task.

4. You may look for an MCU CAD file that you will be using in your research from any FREE resource
library. Start with https://grabcad.com/library.

Things to keep in mind before downloading and importing anything:

• Ensure you are looking for the same exact model of components.
• Refer to the component’s datasheet and part number.
• Using the incorrect components for your project will have incorrect dimensions. So, measure
twice.
• Verify if the shared public model you will be downloading is in the file format: STP (step file –
.stp) which is easier to import into different CAD software and does not lose its CAD data for
easier editing.
• Other file types might work but step files are proven to be the most compatible non-native CAD
file type.

5. To import downloaded files in your team folder:

First, ensure you are inside your team folder

→ click Create
→ Import files
→ select the file
→ Open
→ tick only Import appearances and Import material density
(Orient imported models with Y Axis Up if ONLY necessary – hover over the “?” icon next to it to
see the details)
→ Import.

Wait for the file to be successfully imported by checking its progress in the notifications.

Your team folder should look like this:

6. Open your project prototype document

→ click Derived → rename it to whichever component it is, i.e., Arduino Nano → Select Part Studio
→ Other documents → Teams (Research title team name) → Research title folder → select your
component → select the whole subassembly → skip Locations → click Confirm.

At this point, you may use Transform to reposition the imported model.

7. You may all start designing your prototype parts simultaneously.

Laboratory Proper: (100 points)

1. Create multi-body subassemblies of your research proposal prototype in one (1) part document.

2. The team must use geometries derived from reference components or other parts.

3. Apply all five (5) Boolean operations in CAD modeling.

4. Showcase a Bottom-up Design starting from your selected and imported components and a Top-
down Design for all other parts.

5. Apply colors and decals on surfaces.

For decals, you will have to import images. It is best to use transparent PNGs.

6. Produce high-quality screenshots of your research proposal prototype of the following views:
• Front • Bottom
• Right • Isometric
• Left • Dimetric
• Back • Trimetric
• Top

7. Produce an engineering drawing (draft) with four views (Front, Left, Top, and Isometric in shaded
view) with details of the prototype in ISO Metric A4 – Portrait standard → export as PNG.

8. Compile the documents in a single PDF file. Feel free to use any suitable font and size with a title
page in the format:

STI College [Branch] SY–[School Year]

BS Computer Engineering

In partial fulfillment of the requirements in:

Computer Aided-Drafting
Midterms

Submitted to:
Name of Instructor

Submitted by:
Names of Members

9. Link your CAD document at the beginning of the second page before the screenshots. Caption each
screenshot as Figure [no.]. [view]. For example, Figure 1. Front view.

To add a caption in MS Word, right-click on the picture and click Insert caption. Place the engineering
drawing(s) in the latter part.

10. Each member of the group will submit the same PDF in eLMS.
