Model Answer from Chapter 6 to 10
Chapter 6
A. Answer the following questions.
1-Unfortunately Oliver discovered that Jack and Charley were thieves when he saw
them robbing Mr. Brownlow, he was shocked and didn't runaway with the boys. That's
why when Mr. Brownlow saw him standing he screamed a thief and everyone in the
street started chasing him. They caught Oliver, but they didn't give him a chance to
explain himself and the constable took him to the police station though he was injured
and scared. Luckily, the bookshop owner came on time and explained the truth he saw
that the other two boys were the thieves not Oliver.
2-Although Mr. Brownlow thought Oliver was the thief in the beginning, he felt sorry for
him when he fell in the street and got injured. He also asked the constable to treat him
kindly and not to hurt him. He later on thought Oliver with a poor boy with innocent face,
he even took Oliver to his house to take care of him when he fainted at the police
station.
3-Fagin got really angry when he knew about it .He was scared that Oliver might tell the
constable about them .He also shut the house and asked the boys not to stay there as it
wasn't safe for them.
B-Read the following quotation and answer the questions.
1) a- Bill Sikes said that to Fagin and Nancy. He is a criminal and one of the gang
members; he is a strong thirty-five year old man with angry eyes and dirty clothes. He
seems violent and aggressive in his reaction while talking.
B- Nancy. She was forced by Sikes to go to the police station to find out about Oliver.
c- She agreed to go because she was scared of Sikes as he might harm her. This shows
the themes of criminality and the powerlessness of women as he had power over her
and controlled her actions unlike Fagin who was just using her .
Chapter 7
A) Answer the following question.
1. Oliver’s life was different at Mr. Brownlow’s for the first Oliver was well treated and
well fed. His new friends were very kind to him. Oliver grow strong and well .Mr.
Brownlow brought him new clothes and a new pair of shoes. Oliver was happy there.
2. Mr. Brownlow was very kind and he trusted Oliver. He thought that Oliver was a good
and
innocent boy and welcomed him at his house. However, Mr. Grimwig didn’t trust Oliver
.He judges him according to his social class .He thought that Oliver is a thief and he will
return back to his friends and steal Mr. Brownlow’s house.
3. Oliver looked like the woman in the picture. His face , eyes , head and mouth were
exactly the same.
4. Mr.Grimwig judged Oliver according to his social class and thought that he will
steal Mr. Brownlow’s money just because he is different and he doesn’t belong to
the same rank. He didn’t give himself a chance to know the boy first and quickly
suspected him.
B-Read the following quotation and answer the questions.
1.a. Mr. Grimwig to Mr. Brownlow.
b. It refers to Oliver .Because he doesn’t like him and thinks he is a thief.

2. a. Mr. Brownlow to Oliver.
b. The theme is Virtue VS Evil. Mr. Brownlow was very kind to Oliver and he treated
the boy in a different way. Unlike everybody else Oliver was welcomed and well treated
.He was also well fed and happy for the first time in his life.
c. Everything was different at Mr. Brownlow’s house. Everybody was kind and
smiled at his face. He liked his new life and was very happy there.
Chapter 8
A.Answer the following question.
1. Nancy pretended that Oliver was her brother. They shouted and screamed pretending
that Oliver escaped from his mother’s house.
2. Oliver didn’t want Mr. Brownlow to think that he stole the money.
3. Nancy is presenting the theme of powerlessness of women in the play. She is
always forced to do things she doesn’t like. She is unable to refuse Sikes’s orders.
She tried to protect Oliver more than once. She stopped Fagin when he wanted to hit
Oliver and throw the stick in the fire. She also told Sikes to keep the dog away from
the boy.
4. The theme of child abuse is highly presented in Oliver’s character. The boy is
always obliged to do things that he doesn’t like. In this Chapter , he was obliged to go
back to the thieves ‘
place and leave Mr. Brownlow’s house by force. They will use Oliver to help Sikes in the
robbery against his will. They also locked him alone in the dark again to punish him.

Chapter 9
A.Answer the following question.
1. Sikes and Toby Crackit will climb into the garden the night before. He needs a small
boy to go through the window and opens the door for them.
2. Sikes Ordered Oliver to go into the house and open the door for them in order to
steal it. Oliver decided that he will never be a thief and he will not help them to steal.
He decided that he will go upstairs and wake the family.
3. He was Sikes’s friend and crime partner. He was the one to help Sikes break into
the house. He told Sikes to “drop the boy” and ran away after the servants appeared.
4. Oliver was frightened and he dropped his lamp. The servants woke up and Oliver
fell back. He had been shot .Sikes pulled him through the window. Then Sikes and
Toby ran away and left Oliver fainted on the ground.
5. The theme of child abuse is presented in Oliver’s Character. First , they kidnapped
Oliver and took him to the gang. They took Mr. Brownlow’s money and books from him
then they locked him alone. Then he was forced to go with Bill Sikes and help him in
the robbery. Oliver didn’t want to be a criminal and he begged Sikes to let him go but
Sikes refused. At the end , Oliver had been shot and was left alone on the ground.
B-Read the following quotation and answer the questions.
II)1.a.Bill Sikes to Oliver.
b. The theme of The powerlessness of Children is highly presented in Oliver’s
character. Oliver is powerless he can’t refuse any order. He is obliged to accept
things he doesn’t like because he is afraid. He is unable to escape. They are
misusing him for their own benefit.
c. Bill Sikes is a dangerous criminal in Fagin’s gang and he is also a robber and a
murderer. Throughout the story he mostly appears with his furious white dog. He is
very strong and has a reputation as being a very violent man. He is violent to Nancy
and Oliver as well He is ready to risk his life in the name of crime.
2. a. Oliver to Sikes.
b. These words were said when Oliver Knew that they were going to steal a house.
c. In this chapter Oliver is being mistreated by Sikes to help him with his robbery.
Oliver is being abused emotionally when he was forced begged Sikes to let him but
he refused. He was also physically abused at the end when he was shot and left
alone on the ground. He is also powerless as he was afraid to refuse Sikes orders
and was forced to go into the house.
Chapter 10
A) Answer the following questions.
1- Fortunately, Oliver went to Mrs Maylie’s house and asked for help. She sent for a
doctor to check him up. After Miss Rose and Mrs Maylie saw the poor and
powerless child, they pitied him a lot and never believed that he was one of the
thieves. They also decided not to send him to prison. He stayed with them as a
member of the family and they gave him much care and love.
2- Oliver’s life in the countryside was different as the air was filled with the smell of
beautiful flowers. The days were quiet. Oliver felt safe there and he wasn’t afraid
when he went to bed at night. Every morning he went to a gentleman who taught
him to read better and to write. He went for walks with Mrs Maylie and Rose. He
also enjoyed his time listening to Rose while playing the piano and singing. He
helped in the garden and fed Mrs Maylie’s birds. For Oliver, it was a great life full of
pleasure and delight.
B) Read the following quotations and answer the questions.
1-
a- The addresser is Dr Losberne and the addressees are Mrs Maylie and Rose.
b- He meant that crime doesn’t choose its victim. It chooses both the kind and evil
people. He believed that it was possible that Oliver had taken part in the robbery.
c- It shows how wise he is. He is a rational character who never judges people due to
their appearance. He uses his mind to find out the truth.

a- The addresser is Miss Rose and the addresses are Dr Losberne and Mrs Maylie.
b- It refers to Oliver. Oliver was in a miserable condition. He was very weak with pain
and was in a deep sleep. His arm rested across his chest, his head lay on his other
arm and his hair was spread over the pillow.
