Master of Engineering Science in Engineering Management

STAGE 1- CORE MODULES

 Supply Chain Design & Analysis

MEEN40790
This module is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of supply chain design
and analysis concepts, with particular emphasis on the application of analytical tools and techniques
to assist supply chain planning and control decision making.
 Engineering Project Management - Tools & Techniques
MEEN40800
This module introduces students to the project management life cycle, its phases, processes and
tools, with reference to the 10 knowledge areas in the “Project Management Body of Knowledge
(PMBoK)” of the Project Management Institute. Thus, by the end of this module students will
understand and be able to execute the key steps to ensure that a project is initiated, planned,
managed, monitored and controlled successfully.
 Design & Innovation
MEEN41020
This is an intensive module delivered over a period of four weeks in trimester three (mid May to mid
June) which focuses on the design and innovation lifecycle. The aim of this module is to help
MEngSc in Engineering Management students to develop their ability for independent creative
thinking and innovation and to identify and develop the skill-sets they would require to take a product
from concept stage through to full market launch.
 Applied Research Project
MEEN41030
In this module, each student has the opportunity to research a topic of their choice drawing on
documentary evidence (literature and secondary sources) and primary sources and submitting a
detailed written report. The project will typically be completed as a team and a portion of the
assessment will rely on peer review. The research topic should be applied in nature and associated
with at least one aspect of the MEngSc in Engineering Management programme.
 Introduction to Manufacturing Simulation and Robotics
MEEN41070
The primary objective of this module is to provide an insight into advanced manufacturing and
robotics technologies. Discrete manufacturing modelling aspects are covered, in order to provide the
basic tools that are required for enabling the simulation, analysis and evaluation of the operation of
machines, work centres, production and assembly lines, as well as of supply chains and
manufacturing networks.

 Eng. Decision Support Systems
MEEN41090
Throughout this module, Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) and Mathematical modelling and analysis
principles will be covered. The application of these models will be demonstrated on various problems
from various disciplines such as logistics, production, service and network type systems. Model-
Driven DSS provides the engineering managers and business analysts with an approach and set of
tools to construct and analyse a model of a decision problem involving single or multiple objectives.
 Operations Management
MEEN41100
This module addresses the design principles for the basic elements of a product or service
operation, from raw materials and resources, through transformation processes, to the final
customer. Elements will include transformation, process design and manufacturing, facility layout
and flow, job design, material and resource planning, inventory, logistics and supply chain
management, quality control tools, service and production scheduling and control, process problem
solving, and process reliability.
 Systems Analysis & Improvement
MEEN41120
This module is designed to expose the students to the tools for analysing and improving the quality
performance of various systems such as business, production, and service systems. Quality and
process improvement occurs most effectively on a project-by-project basis. Within this module, The
six-sigma DMAIC framework, an acronym for define, measure, analyse, improve, and control is
described as a structured five-step problem-solving procedure that can be used to successfully
complete quality-related projects by proceeding through and implementing solutions that are
designed to solve root causes of quality and process problems in various types of systems, e.g.
business, production processes, and services.
 Business Information Systems Management ME/MEngSc
MIS40920
This module investigates the theoretical and practical aspects of managing business information
systems and familiarises students with key concepts central to the strategic application of
information systems and information technologies in organisations. The module is designed to
augment students’ analytical and creative capabilities, to enhance their management and consulting
skills and ultimately to enable future business leaders to achieve competitive business advantage by
managing information systems strategically and creatively.

 Marketing Management ME (Business)
MKT40970
This module will provide students with an overview of the function of marketing in business. Among
the areas covered are: creating and capturing customer value, analysing the marketing environment,
consumer markets and buyer behaviour, business markets and buyer behaviour, services marketing,
branding and brand strategy, communication customer value, the promotional mix, advertising,
public relations, personal selling and sales promotions, direct and online marketing.
 Quantitative Methods for Engineers
STAT40690
Students will be able to critically assess studies in the literature and will be able to compute relevant
descriptive statistics, conduct hypothesis tests and apply basic regression models to data. They will
also be required to conduct a study of their own during the course. The course will require studens to
become familiar with the use of statistical software. Finally they will gain experience in writing a
research report.

STAGE 1- OPTIONAL MODULES

 Professional Engineering (Finance)
MEEN30140
 Professional Engineering (Management)
MEEN40430
 Technical Communication
MEEN40670

Applied research project

This programme offers a unique opportunity to the students to apply their acquired knowledge
during the first two trimesters to a practical company-based problem during the summer
trimester. The project topic may be of direct relevance to a company sponsor who will outline
their project requirements in consultation with the student team and the academic supervisor.
To prepare for their project, each student will participate in a series of workshops designed to
develop consultancy and research skills. This summer project provides immense opportunity to
the students to demonstrate their capabilities while working with a company, increasing their
chances of employment with the same company.
