Experiment No 1 :

Aim: Draw a typical layout of workshop with arrangement of

equipment's.

> Objective:
• Streamline workflow processes to reduce material handling and
transportation time.
Minimize movement of both materials and workers, thereby
increasing productivity.
Provide sufficient room for future expansion or addition of new
equipment.

> Apparatus: Tape Measures, Marking Pens and Pencils, Graph

Paper, Drawing Compass and Protractor,Drafting Table,

> Introduction:
• In a manufacturing organization, a job to be manufactured
spends most ofthe time in movingand waiting.
For reduction of this moving and waiting time ofjobs/parts, it
is necessary to have proper layout and proper scheduling
procedure.
Plant layout specifies the position of the overall arrangement
of the various facilities such as equipment's, material,
manpower, materials handling, service and passage
facilities,

required to facilitate efficient operation of production system

of the plant within the area ofthe site selected previously.

Allthe manufacturing facilities such as equipments, raw

materials, machinery, tools, fixtures, workers, etc. are given a
proper place in each workshop ofthe manufacturing plant.

> A good plant layout should meet thefollowing basic requirement:

Integration of manufacturing centre facilities in terms of man,
machine and material.
• Movements of prodction personnel and material handling
should be minimized.
Smooth and continuous flow of production or
manufacturing work with least possiblebottlenecks and

congestion points
Plant layout and shop layouts must be flexible to facilitate
changes in productionrequirements

> Types of Layout:

1)Fix Position layout:
A fixed-position layout is used when a product is too large or heavy
to move through various stages of production. In this type of layout,
the product remains stationary, and workers, materials, and
equipment are brought to the site where the product is being
assembled or processed.
2) Process Layout:
a
A process layout, also known as functional layout, groups similar
processes or functions together. It is commonly used in manufacturing
environments where products require various types of processing steps,
and cach step may need different equipment and skills. This type of
layout is flexible and allows for handling a variety of products, making it
suitable for custom or small batch production.

3) Line layout:

A line layout, also known as a product

designed for high layout, is
volume, mass production of standardized products. It involves
arranging workstations and equipment in a linear sequence that
matches the steps required to manufacture the product. This
type of
layout is highly efficient for producing large quantities of
identical or
very similarproducts.

3) Combination Layout:
A combination layout, also known as a hybrid layout, integrates
elements of both process and product (line) layouts to optimize

production processes. This layout is designed to handle a variety of

products and production volumes, providing the flexibility of a

process layout and the efficiency of a product layout. Combination

layouts are commonlyused in industries where there is a mix of mass
production and custom orders or when there are multiple product
lines requiring different processing steps.
