Q37 – Rohit is a 15-year-old boy who has been experiencing fatigue and weakness for the past few weeks. He visits
a doctor who asks him about his diet and daily routine. Rohit mentions that he often skips breakfast, eats very little
vegetables, and drinks very little water throughout the day. After performing some tests, the doctor tells Rohit that
his hemoglobin levels are low, and he is mildly anemic. The doctor advises him to improve his diet by including
iron-rich foods, leafy vegetables, and drinking more water. He also suggests regular physical exercise to boost
oxygen circulation in his body.

i. What could be the possible reason for Rohit’s fatigue and weakness based on the case study?
ii. How does iron deficiency lead to anemia and affect the oxygen transport system in the body?
iii. Why is water an important component in the process of digestion and circulation?
iv. Explain how regular physical exercise can help improve oxygen circulation in Rohit’s body.

What is the function of haemoglobin?

Q38 - Acids, bases and salts are three main categories of chemical compounds. These have certain definite
properties which distinguish one class from the other. The acids are sour in taste while bases are bitter in taste.
Tasting a substance is not a good way of finding out if it is an acid or a base! Acids and bases can be better
distinguished with the help of indicators. Indicators are substances that undergo a change of colour with a change of
acidic, neutral or basic medium. Many of these indicators are derived from natural substances such as extracts from
flower petals and barrier. Litmus, a purple dye is extracted from the lichen plant. Some indicators are prepared
artificially. For example, methyl orange and phenolphthalein. Given below is a table of indicators and their colour
change in acidic and basic medium.

Q39 - One of the wires in domestic circuits supply, usually with a red insulation cover, is called live wire. With
black insulation is called neutral wire. The earth wire, which has insulation of green colour, is usually connected to
a metal plate deep in the earth near the house appliances that has a metallic body. Overloading contact, in such a
situation the current in the circuit abruptly increases. Circuit prevents damage to the appliances and the circuit due
to overloading.
