Experiment 3

Parallel Plate Capacitor

Objective:
1. Study parameters affecting the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor.
2. Determining the dielectric constant for a dielectric material.
Theory:
A parallel plate capacitor is a device that can store electric charge and energy in
an electric field between two conductive plates separated by a distance.

The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor filled with a dielectric is given by

ɛ̥𝐴
𝑐 = 𝑘 𝑐 ̥ , where 𝑐 ̥ = is the capacitance in the absence of the dielectric,
𝑑
and κ is the dielectric constant.
The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is proportional to the area(A) of
each conductive plate and inversely proportional to the separation distance (d)
𝑘ɛ̥𝐴
between them, 𝑐 = .
𝑑
The constant ɛ ̥ is known as the permittivity constant of free space ɛ ̥ = 8.854 ∗
10−12 .
Tools:
1. Cyclotron frequency
2. Parallel plate capacitors
3. Dielectric materials (wood, plastic).
4. Wires
▪ First Part
Procedures:
1. Measure the diameter then measure the surface area (A) of the plates.
2. Set the parallel plates 5 mm apart and measure the capacitance using the
capacimeter.
3. Then measure the capacitance theoretically by using the following low.
C ̥ = ɛ ̥ A / d.
C ̥Th - C ̥ex
4. Then Calculate error by using the following low E = | | * 100.
C ̥Th
5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 while changing the distance between two plates.
Results:
Write all calculations, then fill the table.
Separation distance (d) C ̥ex C ̥Th Error

▪ Second Part
Procedures:
1. Put dielectric material (Wood) between the capacitor plates and measure
the separation distance (d), measure the capacitance (C), and then remove
the dielectric material and measure the capacitance (C ̥) in this case.
2. Repeat step (2) at least three times while changing the thickness of
dielectric material and write the results in the table.
3. Put dielectric material (plastic) between the capacitor plates and measure
the separation distance (d), measure the capacitance (C), and then remove
the dielectric material and measure the capacitance (C ̥) in this case.
4. Repeat step (4) at least three times while changing the thickness of
dielectric material and write the results in the table.
5. Then use this low k = C / C ̥ to measure the dielectric constant in all
cases.

Results:

Write all calculations, then fill the table.

First dielectric material.
Separation distance (d) C̥ C k=C/C̥

Second dielectric material.

Separation distance (d) C̥ C k=C/C̥
