GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Academic: means belonging to a group of intellectuals, who think responsibly about
our historical moment, through scientific research.

Argumentation: is the process of defending or refuting an idea, an opinion or a


position through the use of reasons and evidence. In other words, it is the act of
convincing someone of the validity or invalidity of an assertion.

Audience: refers to the group of people who receive a message or are exposed to a
content.

Cause: is defined as that which is considered a foundation or origin of something, the


reason, motive and how, the factor that is possible, or convenient to alter in order to
produce, modify and prevent an effect.

Colloquial: an adjective used to describe words, expressions or a style of language


that is informal and more typical of everyday conversation than of a formal context
such as academic or professional writing.

Comparison: consists of analyzing two or more things to find their similarities and
differences. When comparing, we are looking for relationships between these
elements, either in terms of their appearance, function, meaning or any other
characteristic that interests us.

Contract: refers to a formal and binding agreement that requires for its validity the
presence of the following elements: a formal offer, acceptance by the other party, and
consideration, which may or may not be monetary.

Description: it is a discursive tool that allows explaining the characteristics of the


subjects, of the events that take place, of the physical spaces where they take place,
and even of the sensations that are experienced, both in real situations and in fictional
texts.
Discourse: is a term that can have several connotations depending on the context in
which it is used. In general, it refers to the action of speaking or writing about a given
topic. However, its meaning can go deeper and encompass more complex concepts.

Effect: is the transformation or change that something undergoes due to the action of
a cause. It is the observable consequence of a force or factor acting on a subject or
system.

Exposition: refers to making something known, showing it, making it visible, by


means of a detailed explanation or description. Thus exposing a subject, developed in
a clear and orderly manner, providing all the necessary details.

Literary: refers to everything that has to do with the art of writing and the works that
are created through the written word. It is also used to describe something that is
related to literature, books or creative writing, thus having aesthetic, artistic or
intellectual qualities associated with literary works.

Narration: is a way of telling a story, either real or imaginary. It is like painting a


picture with words, describing a series of events that happen to some characters in a
certain place and time.

Non-prose: refers to any form of communication or writing that is not structured as


traditional prose, which is the usual written language in paragraph form. Non-prose
can include poetry, song lyrics, and other forms of creative expression that may use
different structures, formats, or styles to convey meaning.

Outline: is a useful tool for organizing ideas and planning any type of task, from
writing an essay to developing a project.

Prose: is a form of language expression, both oral and written, which is characterized
by not following the metric, rhyme or verse rules found in poetry. In other words,
prose uses a language that is more natural and closer to everyday speech.
Register style: refers to the way we use language in specific communicative
situations. In other words, it is the way we adapt our language to different contexts,
people and purposes.

Scientific: covers everything related to the scientific method, research and knowledge
obtained through systematic observation and experimentation.
