2 Skills 2: Reading and writing
1 Read the interview and answer the questions.
Cat Bailey’s new book Discovering Asia is in shops. Our journalist
Henrietta Reed interviewed her.
Q: Why did you go travelling?
A: I was bored with my job. Manchester, which is the city I live in, is quite a wet and windy place
and I was fed up of the weather. But to be honest, those weren’t the reasons. It was because
I saw an advert about India. It’s a fascinating place which has lots of different cultures,
languages and landscapes. It also has different climates – dry deserts in the west, hot
rainforests in the south and the cold and windy region in the north.
Q: What other countries did you visit?
A: China, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. I wanted to go to Vietnam because it’s the country that
I knew the least about, but I didn’t have enough time.
Q: Which was your favourite place?
A: The place I enjoyed the most was Jiuzhaigou in China. It’s a place that has amazing scenery
with cliffs, mountains and valleys. There is a lake that changes colour during the day. What
made it so special was that I was there with a group of friends that I had made.
Q: Which place did you like the least?
A: There was a storm in Thailand. I was staying at a campsite which was on the beach. A big
wave washed away my tent. The local people were very helpful. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy
Thailand. It’s a beautiful country that has a very interesting culture.
Q: What advice do you have for anyone thinking of doing the same trip as you?
A: Take less luggage than you think you’ll need. Find out information about the climate and
culture before you go. You don’t need to learn the local languages, but being able to say even
a couple of words will help.
