The

article
What is an
Article?
An article is a short monosyllabic word that is used to define if
the noun is specific or not. Articles are normally used before
nouns and since they are used to speak about the noun, they
can be considered as adjectives.
Types of
Article:
English has two articles:
the = definite article
a/an = indefinite article
Definite Article:
The definite article is used before singular and plural nouns
when the noun is specific.

For example,
The dog that bit me ran away.
Here, we are talking about a specific dog, the dog that bit me.
I saw the elephant at the zoo.
Here, we talking about a specific noun. Probably there is only one
elephant at the zoo.
Definite Article With
Count / Uncountable
Nouns
"The" can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns, so long as you are
talking about something specific. Here are some examples of "the" with count
nouns:
Can you pass me the pencil?
You've collected all the 20th-century coins.

Now for some examples of "the" with uncountable nouns:

It would be best if you didn't skate on that lake; the ice is too thin.
I can't hear you over the music.
Indefinite
Article:
‘A’ and ‘An’ signal that the noun modified is indefinite, referring
to any number of a group.
I had an apple for breakfast.
Do you have an eraser?
I saw an aeroplane.
She has a pet dog.
My father is a doctor.
My brother gave me a calculator.
Remember one thing, using ‘a’ or ‘an’ depends on the
sound that begins the next word. So…

‘A’ + Singular noun is ‘An’ + Singular noun

beginning with a beginning with a vowel .
consonant. For example, An
For example, A zoo, A car, A elephant, An egg, An
bus, A bike, A tree. orphan.
Using an article
before an adjective
The rules for using articles don’t change when the noun is modified by an adjective. However, if
you’re using an indefinite article, choose the indefinite article that matches the adjective’s
beginning sound. Here are two examples:

Eliza will bring a small gift to Sophie’s party.

I heard an interesting story yesterday.

And for good measure, here’s an example with a definite article:

We watched the colorful birds flying overhead.

Check Your Understanding of Articles
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate articles in the following
sentences:
1. The lion is called _____ king of beasts
2. The injured were taken to _____ hospital
3. They sent me _____ box
4. I am reading _____ book
5. They were calling _____ boys
6. I am living here for _____ long time
7. My father has died yesterday, he left me _____ large
fortune
8. He is flying _____ kite
Don’t use articles with
possessive pronouns
Possessive pronouns like his, my, our, its, her, and their can help identify whether
you’re talking about specific or nonspecific items. In fact, they completely replace
articles. Here are a few examples:

We went to their cabin.

Are you going to read his book?
