“I Have a Dream” Speech – Developing a Series of Ideas


Review: Consider King’s central idea and thesis statement in order to analyze how
he develops his ideas throughout the speech.

What is King’s central idea? What is his thesis statement?

Directions: Use the anchor chart as a guide to fill in the chart below about
King’s “I Have a Dream” speech (pages 261-264).

Activity: Visual Representation of METAPHOR


Dr. King uses many metaphors to develop his main idea. Choose one of the
metaphors that King uses to emphasize his point, and illustrate it in a literal sense
on a separate piece of paper. Then, on the back of this paper, write a short
paragraph explaining what the metaphor might mean and how it makes his speech
more effective. Please paper clip these two sheets together.
Metaphor – comparison of one idea to another idea regarded as symbolic or
representative.
Ex. She had a heart of gold. (In this metaphor, we compare her heart to
gold).
Your VISUAL paper should include:
 A picture or literal representation of the metaphor.
 The quote from the text that includes the metaphor.
 A correct citation after the quote.
 Color and detail – be creative!!
Paragraph Explanation: How does Dr. King use metaphors to make his speech
more effective? Please answer in 3-5 sentences using the RACE format.
