PHY1 C03: Electrodynamics and Plasma Physics

Time: 3 Hours Max. Weightage: 30

I. Answer all of the following: (8 x 1 = 8 Weightage)

1. Why are potential functions used in electromagnetics?
2. Define critical angle. When does it exist at an interface of two nonmagnetic media?
3. What are quasi-static fields? Are they exact solutions of Maxwell’s equations? Explain.
4. Define propagation constant and characteristic impedance of a transmission line.
Write their general expressions in terms of R, L, G and C for sinusoidal excitation.
5. What is meant by dual tensor?
6. Represent the Lorentz force law in relativistic notation.
7. List the three conditions that a plasma must be satisfied.
8. Plasmas are diamagnetic. Justify.

II. Answer any two of the following: (2 x 5 = 10 Weightage)

9. Discuss the general electromagnetic boundary conditions. Apply it to:
(a) The interface between two lossless linear media
(b) The interface between a dielectric and a perfect conductor
10. Discuss the perpendicular polarization of a uniform plane electromagnetic wave when it is
incident on a plane conducting surface obliquely.
11. Discuss how the transmission lines can serve as circuit elements at ultra high frequencies.
12. Obtain the general transformation rules for the electromagnetic fields in relativistic cases.

III. Answer any four of the following: (4 x 3 = 12 Weightage)

13. A (physical) electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges (±𝑞) separated by
a distance 𝑑. Find the approximate potential at points far from the dipole.
14. For the case of oblique incidence of a uniform plane wave with parallel polarization on a
perfectly conducting plane boundary, write the instantaneous expressions 𝐸 and 𝐻 for the
total field in medium 1 using a sine reference.
15. Explain the radiation efficiency of an antenna.

16. Obtain the wave equations governing the 𝐸 and 𝐻 fields in a source free conducting
medium with constitutive parameters 𝜖, 𝜇 and 𝜎.
17. A rectangular waveguide having dimensions 𝑎 = 2.29 cm and 𝑏 = 1.02 cm operates
only in the dominant TE10 mode. If it is desired that the operating frequency be at least
25% above the cutoff frequency of the TE 10 mode but no higher than 95% of the next
higher cutoff frequency, what is the allowable operating-frequency range?
18. Reformulate the scalar and vector potentials by a field tensor using single four vector
potential.
19. Explain the radiation mechanism of two wire antenna system.
