QUESTION

The following is the motor’s nameplate. Explain the meaning of each information on the
name plate, give the areas of application of the motor and its characteristics on different
conditions.
1. Explanation of Each Detail:
(i)TYPE ¥- 90L.-2: This indicates the motor type and frame size.
“90L” refers to the frame size, which helps in determining the mounting dimensions, shaft
size, and general physical characteristics.
“-2” suggests the motor has two poles, affecting its synchronous speed.

(ii)1.9A: This is the full-load current, which means the motor draws 1.9 Amps at full load.
This helps in selecting the correct circuit protection.

(iii)2.2 kW, 3HP: The motor’s power rating in kilowatts (kW) and horsepower (HP).
2.2 kW (kilowatts) is roughly equivalent to 3 HP, indicating the motor’s ability to deliver this
output at rated load.

(iv)380 V: This is the rated voltage the motor operates at. It requires a three-phase, 380V
supply for optimal performance.
(v)50Hz: This indicates the motor’s frequency requirement. The motor is designed for a
standard 50Hz AC supply.
(vi)INS.CL F 155°C: Insulation Class F, This is the insulation class rating which supports
operation in high-temperature conditions. Class F indicates the motor’s insulation can
withstand a maximum temperature of 155°C. It’s important for ensuring that the motor’s
winding insulation remains effective over time.
(vii)2845 r/min: This is the rated rotational speed of the motor in revolutions per minute
(RPM).
2845 RPM is close to the synchronous speed for a two-pole, 50Hz motor (3000 RPM),
meaning it has a slip of about 5%, typical for an induction motor.

(viii)IP55 NO. FD171023006:

IP55: Ingress Protection rating, where “55” signifies protection against dust ingress, and
“55” means protection against low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for industrial
environments.
NO. FD171023006: Serial number for tracking and identification purposes.
2. Meaning of Each Information on the Nameplate
(i)Motor Type and Frame Size: Specifies physical and mounting dimensions, impacting
compatibility.
(ii)Amperage (1.9A): Affects wiring and breaker sizing for safe operation.
(iii)Power Rating (2.2 kW, 3HP): Defines output power capacity, determining suitability for
load demands.
(iv)Voltage (380 V): Indicates operational voltage requirement; affects power source
compatibility.
(v)Frequency (50Hz): Specifies the frequency of operation, critical for speed consistency and
compatibility.
(vi)Insulation Class F (155°C): Ensures thermal endurance for the motor windings, affecting
lifespan in hot environments.
(vii)Speed (2845 RPM): Defines motor speed and is important for applications requiring
specific speed consistency.
(viii)Ingress Protection (IP55): Indicates resistance to dust and water, determining suitability
for industrial and harsh environments.

3. Areas of Application Considering Motor Properties

Given its properties, this motor is suitable for:

➢ Industrial Machinery: This could include pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors
where a reliable 2.2 kW motor is needed.
➢ Manufacturing Facilities: Can drive equipment that requires precise speed and
moderate dust and moisture resistance (IP55 rating).
➢ HVAC Systems: Can be used in industrial ventilation or air handling due to its high
insulation class, ensuring longevity in warm environments.
➢ Agricultural Equipment: Suitable for applications like grain mills or water pumps
where reliable power and dust resistance are required.

4. Motor Characteristics in Different Operating Conditions

➢ Starting Characteristics: Likely uses Direct On-Line (DOL) or Star-Delta starting due
to its small size and current. Starting current can be up to 6-7 times full load current,
requiring suitable protections.
➢ Half Load Characteristics: Operating below full load reduces the current draw and
temperature, leading to improved efficiency and reduced wear, though at a slightly
lower speed.
➢ Full Load Characteristics: At full load, the motor achieves its rated power output
with slightly lower speed than synchronous speed due to slip. The current is 1.9A,
producing the expected 2.2 kW output.
➢ Braking Characteristics: May involve dynamic braking (injecting DC current) or
regenerative braking if needed, although this would require additional components
as standard induction motors lack dedicated braking.
➢ Stopping Characteristics: Induction motors naturally coast to a stop when power is
removed, but braking methods can be implemented for faster stopping if the
application demands it.
