Scientific Notation

What is Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation is a scientific method of writing a number. This is a


notation used to denote a larger number or a smaller number in the form
of bx10a, here “b” is a number or any decimal point number, and “a” is the
power of ten that can be positive or negative. The addition, subtraction,
multiplication, or division can be done easily with two or more scientific
notations.
Any number that we are able to write as a decimal number amongst 1.0 and

10.0 multiplied by the power of 10 is known as Standard form e.g.,

8.898×1036.

Let us take some examples to understand more accurately.

Convert 9876543210000000 to the standard form.

: write down the number. 9876543210000000


: Identify the decimal place. 9876543210000000.
The decimal point is after the last digit
: Now move the decimal point to the first non-zero digit.
9.876543210000000
: count the movement of the decimal point and write it in the power
of 10 and multiply by the number. 9.876543210000000 x 1015

: Round the number up to two decimal places. 9.88 x 10
This is the required standard form of 9876543210000000.
Convert 0.0000000012345 to the standard form.

: write down the number. 0.0000000012345

: Now move the decimal point to the first non-zero digit.


0000000001.2345

: count the movement of the decimal point and write it in the and multiply
-9
by the number. 0000000001.2345x10 power of 10

: Ignore the leading zeros. 1.2345×10-9

This is the required standard form of 0.0000000012345.
