PRACTICE PROBLEMS
1.
The figure shows the layout of a band brake applied to the brake drum of a hoist, where the braking
force P is applied at one end of a lever which is pivoted on a fixed fulcrum at F. the drum diameter is
1 m, the arc of contact 225° and μ =0.3.
Calculate the force P to give a braking torque of 4000Nm if the drum is rotating
(a) clockwise and
(b) anticlockwise. Comment on the large difference between the answers to (a) and (b)
2.
(a) A ball of mass 1 kg moving with a velocity of 2 m/s impinges directly on a ball of mass 2 kg at
rest. The first ball, after impinging, comes to rest. Find the velocity of the second ball after the
impact and the coefficient of restitution.
1
(b) The masses of two balls are in the ratio of 2:1 and their velocities are in the ratio of 1:2, but in
the opposite direction before impact. If the coefficient of restitution be 5/6, prove that after the
impact, each ball will move back with 5/6th of its original velocity.
3. Determine the tension in the strings and accelerations of two blocks of mass 150 kg and 50 kg
connected by a string and a frictionless and weightless pulley as shown in figure.
4
A screw jack has a square thread of 75 mm mean diameter and 15 mm pitch. The load on the jack
revolves with the screws. The coefficient of friction at the screw thread is 0.05.
(a) Find the tangential force to be applied to the jack at 360 mm radius, so as to lift a load of 6 kN
weight.
(b) State whether the jack is selflocking. If it is, find the torque necessary to lower the load. If not,
find the torque which must be applied to keep the load from descending.

the system is released from rest and neglecting friction, determine;
(a) the acceleration of B,
(b) the velocity of B relative to A at t = 0.5 sec.
6
Block A has a mass of 10 kg, and blocks B and C have masses of 5 kg each. Knowing that the
blocks are initially at rest and that B moves through 3m in 2s, determine
a) the magnitude of the force P,
b) the tension in the cord AD. Neglect the masses of the pulleys and axle friction.
7
The coefficients of friction between blocks A and C and the horizontal surfaces are μS = 0.24 and
μK = 0.20. Knowing that mA = 5 kg, mB = 10 kg and mC = 10 kg.
Determine
a) the tension in the cord,
3
b) the acceleration of each block.
8
The 15 kg block B is supported by the 25 kg block A and is attached to a cord to which a 225 N
horizontal force is applied as shown. Neglecting friction, determine,
a) the acceleration of block A,
b) the acceleration of block B relative to A.
9
A mass of 300 kg is allowed to fall vertically through 1 metre on to the top of a pile of mass 500 kg.
Assume that the falling mass and pile remain in contact after impact and that the pile is moved 150 mm
at each blow. Find, allowing for the action of gravity after impact
a) The energy lost in the blow, and
b) The average resistance against the pile.

a) In a flat belt drive the initial tension is 2000 N. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the
pulley is 0.3 and the angle of lap on the smaller pulley is 150°. The smaller pulley has a radius of
200 mm and rotates at 500 r.p.m. Find the power in kW transmitted by the belt.
4
b) Find the power transmitted by a belt running over a pulley of 600 mm diameter at 200 r.p.m. The
coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25, angle of lap 160° and maximum
tension in the belt is 2500 N.

Block B of mass 10 kg rests as shown on the upper surface of a 22 kg wedge, Fig 6. Knowing that
the system is released from rest and neglecting friction, determine;

a) A body, resting on a rough horizontal plane required a pull of 180 N inclined at 30º to the plane
just to move it. It was found that a push of 220 N inclined at 30º to the plane just moved the
body. Determine the weight of the body and the coefficient of friction.
b) An electric motor driven power screw moves a nut in a horizontal plane against a force of 75 kN
at a speed of 300 mm/min. The screw has a single square thread of 6 mm pitch on a major
diameter of 40 mm. The coefficient of friction at the screw threads is 0.1. Estimate power of the
motor

which is required at the end of 500 mm long lever to lower a load of 25 kN. Take coefficient of
friction between the screw and thread as 0.05.
