Tsunami Facts
1 What is a tsunami?
Many people enjoy going to the beach during the summer and playing in the
waves. Yet, waves can be very dangerous sometimes. Very large waves can be
taller than many houses and buildings. They can even flood and damage coastal
5 towns or cities. We call these huge waves ‘tsunamis’, which is a Japanese word.

Why does a tsunami happen?

A tsunami can be extremely large. It is usually caused by an underwater
earthquake or a volcanic eruption. The shaking on the seafloor can lead to a great
movement of water. Large amounts of sand are shifted on the ocean floor so very
10 large waves are created. These waves can move quickly and for long distances.
Some tsunamis keep moving in one direction for hundreds of kilometres until they
hit land.

Why is a tsunami harmful?

A tsunami does not crash on the beach like a normal wave. It hits towns or cities that
15 are near the ocean instead. Tsunamis are so powerful that they can wash millions
of litres of water onto the land. Flooding will occur and cause damage to the cities.
Also, buildings will likely be destroyed by the strong energy of waves.

When did the largest tsunami occur?

The largest tsunami ever happened in 1958 in Lituya Bay in
20 the USA. A strong earthquake caused a landslide of rocks
from the mountain near the ocean. The rocks fell from
the hills hit the water, forming a giant wave. The tsunami
was around 524 metres tall. It was taller than the largest
skyscraper in Hong Kong! Luckily, this area was far from
25 any large towns or cities so serious damage did not occur.
