What is Mathematical Modeling?
Mathematical Modeling
Real world problem Mathematical model
Population, financial -assumptions
energy -approximations
When we do mathematical modeling we have to make certain assumptions and
have to make approximations.
2
A mathematical model is a description of a system using
mathematical concepts and language. The process of
developing a mathematical model is termed mathematical
modeling(Wikipedia).
Mathematical representation of physical situation.
Applications of mathematics.
Understanding, simplifying and solving a real life problem
Connection with real life- Mathematics use as a tool to
explain and make predictions of natural phenomena
Real-world Simplification Model
data Determine the essential
characteristics and
formulate the model
Verification Analysis
Predictions / Interpretation Mathematical
explanations conclusions

Classification of Mathematical Models
There are many different types of mathematical
models. Classifying them into different categories
can tell about their purpose, nature, required
mathematical tools and techniques, etc.
Subject matter of the model
Mathematical Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine
Economics, Sociology
Mathematical techniques
Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations, Graphs
Matrices, Mathematical Programming 5
Classification of Mathematical Models Cont.
According to the nature
Linear-Nonlinear
Static–Dynamic
static-steady state systems (system in an equilibrium
state and its time invariant)
Dynamic-time dependent
Discrete or Continuous
6
Deterministic- Stochastic
every variable of the state involve in a system can be uniquely
determined by parameters in the model
variable shows random nature rather than unique, then this
model is called stochastic model, eg. prediction for raining
in next month
According to their purpose
Prediction, Optimization, Control, Action
