Information Technology Architecture

Integrator Project
(Proyecto Integrador de arquitectura de
tecnologias de informacion)
By
Dr. J.V. Joshua, PhD
What is Information?
• Information is data processed for some purpose.
• Information can only be considered to be 'real’ Information if it meets
certain criteria i.e. it must be:
• communicated to the recipient
• in a language that is understood
• in a suitable form
• relevant for achieving some purpose
• Information is any form of communication that provides
understandable and useful knowledge for the person receiving it
What is Information Technology?
• Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage,
networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes
to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic
data.
• The commercial use of IT encompasses both computer technology
and telecommunications
What is Information Technology?
• The IT department ensures that the organization's systems, networks,
data and applications all connect and function properly.
IT Infrastructure
• An information technology infrastructure consists of the physical
facilities, services, and management that support all shared
computing resources in an organization.
• There are 6 major components of the IT infrastructure:
1. computer hardware: Servers, data centers, computers, and networking
equipment
2. Software: Operating systems, enterprise applications
3. networks and communication facilities (including the Internet and
intranets): Routers, switches etc.
4. Data storage: Databases and storage solutions
5. Information management personnel
6. Facilities: Physical spaces that house IT equipment, such as data centers
IT Infrastructure
• Infrastructures include these resources as well as their integration,
operation, documentation, maintenance, and management.
• The IT architecture and IT infrastructure provide the basis for all
information systems in the organization.
• IT architecture focuses on concept and design, while IT infrastructure
focuses on physically implementing those ideas and designs.
• A well-structured IT infrastructure is essential for any organization
looking to maintain efficiency, security, and agility in today’s fast-
paced digital landscape.
What is IT Architecture?
• Information technology architecture is the overall design of a computing
system and interrelationships between its components
• It is both a guide for current operations(system development) and a
blueprint for future directions(i.e. responsiveness to business change)
• The IT architecture integrates the entire organization’s needs for
information, the IT infrastructure, and all applications.
• The IT architecture is analogous to the architecture of a house.
• An architecture plan describes how the house is to be constructed;
including how the various components of the house
• The IT architecture shows how all aspects of information technology in an
organization fit together

Benefits of IT Architecture
(Why Architecting IT)
• Enhanced security
• Protects critical data and resources, ensuring business continuity and
safeguarding against cyber threats
• Enhance user interface
• Whether it’s clients, the public, or just the employees that uses information
technology systems, a better user interface is something everyone can benefit
from.
• There is some non-technical design that goes into place here to make it
aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate for your users
Benefits of IT Architecture
(Why Architecting IT)
• Integrates multiple working parts of a business
• It helps to optimize the time spent on tasks between departments and makes
it easier for individuals to do their jobs
• Helps comfort stakeholders
• Stakeholders are able to look at every little details of a business and when
they see that all the working parts of that business integrate well with one
another, it puts them at ease.
Benefits of IT Architecture
(Why Architecting IT)
• Cost Efficiency: Reduces operational costs by optimizing resource use
and leveraging cloud solutions.
• Innovation: Supports the deployment of new services and
technologies, helping businesses stay competitive.
• Scalability: Enables businesses and companies to scale operations up
or down based on demand, providing flexibility to adapt to changing
conditions.
Types of IT Architectures
• There are three (3) types of IT Architectures:
• Enterprise architecture
• Solution architecture
• Technology architecture
Enterprise Architecture
• Enterprise architecture (EA) is the blueprint of the whole company
and defines the architecture of the complete company.
• It includes all applications and IT systems that are used within the
company and by different companies' departments including all
applications (core and satellite), integration platforms (e.g. Enterprise
Service Bus, API mgt), web, portal and mobile apps, data analytical
tooling, data warehouse and data lake, operational and development
toolings (e.g. DevOps tooling, monitoring, backup, archiving etc.),
security, and collaborative applications (e.g. email, chat, file systems)
etc.
• The EA blueprint shows all IT system in a logical map
Enterprise Architecture
• The objective of an enterprise architecture is to focus on making IT
work for the whole company and business and fit the companies' and
business' goals.
• It looks at the business strategy and find IT solutions to make it work
including innovation and digital enablement.
• Therefore, an enterprise architect needs to be able to understand
both IT and business at a high level.
• Enterprise architecture is important to clarify how business and IT
align and how they support, enable and facilitate each other
Solution Architecture
• Solution Architecture describes what functionalities a specific system
needs to perform.
• It is a detailed description of the functionalities needed to meet
business objectives, the logic that governs them, and the information
associated with them.
• It is also described as the functional architecture of an application or
system
• In other words, solution architecture is about IT system specifications,
translating requirements into a solution, and usually applies to a
single project or release. It is the functional architecture of a system
or an application
Solution Architecture
• Difference between a solution and enterprise architecture is that its
context is to a specific solution as opposed to an entire company or
enterprise
Technology Architecture
• Technology Architecture is the detailed description of the various
technology components needed to meet business objectives, the
logic that governs them, and the data associated with them.
• In summary, IT architecture shows the software and hardware
architecture and is less relevant to overall business and company
strategy, but more focused on how the specific solution can be served
by this platform.
• Technology architects focus on how components are designed and
built to help you find robust and cost-effective software and hardware
solutions
Technology Architecture
• They act as the gateway between the software development team
and the business to make sure that business needs are met.

IT Architecture = Solution + Technical Architecture

• IT Architecture is the combination of a high level functional solution
architecture together with the alignment of the Technology
