Assignment-1 (ME-534/533)

1. A plane wall is constructed of a material having a thermal conductivity that varies as

the square of the temperature according to the relation K=KO (1+βT2). Derive an
expression for heat transfer in wall.
2. A steel tube having k = 46 W/moC has an inside diameter of 3.0cm and a tube wall
thickness of 2mm. A fluid flows on the inside of the tube producing a convection
coefficient of 1500W/m2 on the inside surface, while a second fluid flows across the
outside surface of a convection coefficient of 197W/m2oC on the outside tube. Inside
fluid temp 223oC, while outside fluid temperature is 57oC. Calculate heat lost by the
tube/meter of length.
3. A hollow sphere is constructed of aluminium with an inner diameter of 4cm and outer
diameter of 8cm. The inside temperature is 100oC and outer temperature is 50oC.
Calculate heat transfer.
4. Derive a relation for critical radius of insulation for a sphere.
5. A hot steam pipe having an inside surface temperature of 250oC has an inside
diameter of 8cm and a wall thickness of 55cm. It is covered with a 9 cm layer of
insulation having k = 0.5W/moC, followed by a 4cm layer of insulation is 20oC.
Calculate the heat lost/meter of length. Assume k = 47W/moC for the pipe.
6. A plane wall 6cm thick generates heat internally at the rate of 0.3 MW/m3. One side
of the wall is insulated and other side wall exposed to environment at 93oC. The
convection heat transfer coefficient between the wall and the environment is 570
W/m2 oC. The thermal conductivity of the wall is 21W/m.oC. Calculate the maximum
temperature in the wall.
7. Derive an expression for the temperature distribution in a sphere of radius r, with
uniform heat generation 𝑞̇ and constant surface temperature Tw.
8. A current of 200amp is made to pass through a stainless steel wire of 2mm diameter
and 2m in length. The resistivity of the wire is 70𝜇 ohm.cm. Calculate the centre
temperature of the wire if the outer surface temperature of the wire is maintained at
150oC. The thermal conductivity may be taken as 29W/mK.
9. A 16cm OD pipe (k-47W/mK) of 4mm thickness carrying saturated steamµ is
covered with insulating material (k-0.087W/mK) of 4cm thick. Given, hi-
116.3W/m2K and ho-11.6W/m2K. It is found that heat loss is more and it is proposed
to add another layer of 4cm thick insulating material. Calculate % reduction in heat
transfer.
10. Two 5cm diameter stainless steel bar, 15cm long have ground surface roughness about
1µm. The two bar combination is exposed overall ∆𝑇 of 110oC. Calculate the axial heat
flow and temperature drop across the contact surface. (Given 1/hc-5.28*10-4)
