The figure shows how the torque curve varies with variations in the supply voltage and frequency. With the rated
voltage, if the frequency is increased above the base value
(1.0), the peak torque (Tmax) decreases because of the decrease of air gap flux. This is basically dc series motor-like
operation. If, on the other hand, frequency is decreased, the voltage has to decrease proportionately so that flux
remains constant. In this region (called the constant torque region), peak or pull-out torque remains constant, and the
curve shifts to the left, as shown in the figure. Evidently, volts/Hz control is the usual method for speed control, and the
drives operate mostly in this constant torque region. This means that, as the frequency is varied to control the speed,
the voltage has to vary proportionately in the constant torque region. With some margin for machine parameter
variation, the inverter short-time-limit torque is somewhat less than machine limit torque. For steady-state operation,
the inverter permits a lower limit, which is defined as the rated torque-speed curve. In the field or flux weakening
region, operation is usually limited by the constant power curve, as shown in the figure. Note that the motor can be
accelerated from zero speed with full rated torque within the limit of rated current.
