Title: Investigation of three phase Squirrel Cage induction motor
Variable Frequency Drive System

Student’s Name:
Supervisor:
Submission Date:
1. Experiment Objectives:
 Studying and identifying the workbench components.
 Investigation of three-phase squirrel cage motor electro-mechanical and torque-speed
regulated characteristics by:
A- Varying stator voltage and frequency (V/f= const).
B- Varying frequency above nominal frequency with fixed stator voltage.

2. Prelab Activities
Activity 1: Read the lecture notes

Activity 2: draw the predicted characteristics (mechanical and electromechanical)

Warning
You should not exceed the current values of 1.5 amber
Volt = 220 V / 380 V Star / Delta
Current =1.5 A/.78 A
Speed = 1450 rpm

3. Theoretical background

The following figure shows characteristics of VVVF method

Exp.5.II 1/5
The figure shows how the torque curve varies with variations in the supply voltage and frequency. With the rated
voltage, if the frequency is increased above the base value

(1.0), the peak torque (Tmax) decreases because of the decrease of air gap flux. This is basically dc series motor-like
operation. If, on the other hand, frequency is decreased, the voltage has to decrease proportionately so that flux
remains constant. In this region (called the constant torque region), peak or pull-out torque remains constant, and the
curve shifts to the left, as shown in the figure. Evidently, volts/Hz control is the usual method for speed control, and the
drives operate mostly in this constant torque region. This means that, as the frequency is varied to control the speed,
the voltage has to vary proportionately in the constant torque region. With some margin for machine parameter
variation, the inverter short-time-limit torque is somewhat less than machine limit torque. For steady-state operation,
the inverter permits a lower limit, which is defined as the rated torque-speed curve. In the field or flux weakening
region, operation is usually limited by the constant power curve, as shown in the figure. Note that the motor can be
accelerated from zero speed with full rated torque within the limit of rated current.

2- Investigation of three-phase squirrel cage motor electro-mechanical and torque-speed

regulated characteristics
I- Preliminary steps (Experiment setup):
- Move the master switch (“MAIN SWITCH”) lever downwards.
- Move the (“BRAKE POWER”) switch lever downwards.
- Set all of the DIN 1, DIN 2, DIN 3, DIN 4, DIN 5 and DIN 6 switches to position “0”( i.e. lever
downwards).
 DIN 1 set to the START/S TOP function.
 DIN 2 set to the REVERSE MOTOR function.
 DIN 3 set to the ALARM RESET function.
 DIN 4, DIN 5 and DIN 6 are not used.
- Turn the (“INTERNAL SPEED REFERENCE”) potentiometer knob fully to the left (zero reference).
- Set the (“INT/EXT”) switch lever to “INT” position, speed control by (“INTERNAL SPEED
REFERENCE”) potentiometer.
- Turn the (“DC MOTOR BRAKE”) variator knob fully to the left (zero reference).
- Move the master switch (“MAIN SWITCH”) lever upwards, and then verify that the line lamp will come
ON.
- Make sure that the emergency mushroom button (“OFF”) has been released.
- Turn the key selector (“ON”) to the right.
- Turn the (“INTERNAL SPEED REFERENCE”) potentiometer knob slowly to the right to set the desired
speed level.
- Move the (“BRAKE POWER”) switch lever upwards.
- Turn the (“DC MOTOR BRAKE”) variator knob slowly to the right to set the desired load torque.
