The

Renaissanc
e
The Renaissance was a period of
European history which began in
the 14th century and ended in
around the 17th century. Scientific
discoveries, music, literature and
art flourished. It was also a time of
exploration as Christopher
Columbus discovered two new
continents that had previously
been unknown to Europeans.

Italy
The Renaissance began
in Italy but eventually, it
spread across Europe.
During this period, some
of the most famous
paintings and sculptures
in history were created.
Florence became one of the most
significant Italian cities during the
Renaissance. The Medici family were
the rulers of Florence. They supported
the arts, giving large amounts of
money to artists so that they could
design buildings and create paintings
and statues.

The Print Press
● One of the greatest inventions in
History

● Invented by a German man, called

Johann Gutenberg.

● Gutenberg used a movable type to

make a printing press.

● Machine by which text and images are

transferred from movable type to
paper.
How do you think
the printing press
affected people at
that time?
The printing press
significance
• Allowed millions of books to be
created.
• The bible could be printed in many
languages
• Increase in literacy
Humanism
● Not only art was developed at the
times of the renaissance, also
literature.

● A new movement called Humanism,

grew out because writers wanted to
think and write about life on earth and
less about life in heaven.

● Humanists wanted to be realistic and

solve human problems.
Erasmus (Dutch Humanist)
● I wrote about problems & abuses I saw
in the church, and the selfish wars of
kings.

● “To know nothing is the sweetest

life”…
said Erasmus in his book
The Praise of Folly.
Thomas More (English Humanist)
● I was killed because I refused to accept
King Henry as head of the church of
England.

● I wrote my book “Utopia”, which

means “no place” to talk about
divorce, mercy killing, women’s rights,
pluralism (the holding of two or more
positions).
