number one (No 1) business-oriented site.

through your profile.

search. They could be either primary or secondary keywords.

Having a profile image raises the chances of your profile being viewed and more likely to
receive connection requests. It will be shown and used to identify you in any information
connected to you on the platform which of course includes search results and so on.
Be unique
It is the larger photo above your profile picture which should catch the attention of your
potential employer and compel them to read further, your profile page. Adding that extra
step helps you stand out amongst other individuals and creates a memory trigger in the
mind of your potential employer.
NOTE 5. What's Your Name, and What Do You Do?
Not only is your name any viewer of your profile sees, it is the first thing they read most
importantly, in search. Here are a few things to note.
• Profile URL
• Website (3 slots to fill)
• Phone number
• Physical address
• Email address and others might be optional to you.
This is accessible on your profile by clicking on contact info and can as well be edited in
situations when you want to update your information.
NOTE 7. Grab a Custom URL
Every linkedin profile is assigned a secondary URL which can thereafter be changed or
customized to a primary one. Customizing your URL makes it look more branded and
professional. It also makes it easier to remember and use. Using your name or something
close to it would be much preferable rather than something that could change
consecutively.
• It is subject to availability
• It must align with your name which should not be misleading or ambiguous
• Changing your name does automatically change your URL
• The old URL will redirect to your new URL after customizing or changing it
• It cannot be changed within a space of 30 days.
To do this, go to edit contact information where you have your profile URL (secondary)
and click on it.
Clicking on your ‘edit public profile and URL’ will direct you to edit your visibility as
you want.
NOTE 9. Consider a Profile Badge
A profile badge is a good idea to make sure that people know they can as well find you
on Linkedin. Using a badge on your website is a great way to cross-promote your profile
for viewers who visit your website and help connect with them. Here are steps to follow;
To activate this, all you have to do is add a profile in another language to your original
profile. With this, your profile can then be toggled between both languages, though all
information is the same but in different languages. Added language could as well be
removed from your profile.
Click on ‘Add profile in another language’ where you will be directed to fill in your
details
After all details have been saved, your profile can then be viewed in both languages as
seen below.
NOTE 11. Update Your Connections
It is advisable to check and update your connections every month so that you can connect
with people through your personal network. Basically, this is to see and find out people
who could be of benefit to you such as;
Analysts
Partners
Competitors
Clients
Updating your connections is done through your network where you have a list and check
for key people you know and could be of benefit to you before connecting to them. In
connecting as well, you can include an invitation note stating who you are and why you
want to be connected to the person. This helps grow your personal network on linkedin.
NOTE 12. Add Media / Links
One of the outstanding features of your LinkedIn profile is the option to add media to
some sections on your profile. Media in this context can include images, links, pdf, and
videos to help engage your viewers and know more about you. Section which you can
add media to are by clicking on the + sign is;
Feature section
Education section
Experience section
NOTE 13. Review Skills & Endorsements
Including specific skills on your Linkedin profile is a great way to showcase your
abilities. You can add a maximum of 50 skills to your profile. They're a simple and
effective way of building your professional brand and engaging your network.
They should have keywords relevant to your profession as stated earlier, that you want to
be endorsed for, as it will ensure you don't get lots of endorsements for random skills you
are not interested in. They should reflect what potential viewers are looking for and help
reaffirm what you have stated in your background.
Once you've added a skill to your profile, your skills can be validated by your direct
connections to reinforce their weighting. These are called skill endorsements, which are
different from recommendations. When a connection endorses your skills, it contributes
to the strength of your profile, and increases the likelihood that you'll be discovered for
opportunities related to the skills you possess.
Endorsing your connections' skills on their profile is a way to recognize any professional
abilities that you've seen them demonstrate. You may be asked to provide feedback on
skills and endorsements.
Endorsing your colleagues can also help you to maintain strong connections with the
people in your network. There are chances your connections get your notification and
reciprocate the act. You could as well ask friends and family or known people for
endorsement.
It is noteworthy to state that these skills should be prioritized by pinning the top 3
relevant skills. They can as well subsequently be changed by dragging in the order you
want.
NOTE 14. Move Sections Around
There are some of the sections of your profile that can be moved around, allowing you to
customize and prioritize the information you present to connections and prospects. Here
are some of the sections;
You can add to your projects through accomplishment sections on your profile
and if updating for the first time, you go through ‘Add Section’.
NOTE 16. Add / Update Publications
This is not just for published books and written work, though they should definitely be
included here. You can also include links to blog posts, particularly if you've contributed
articles on sites other than your own relevant to your profession.
As stated above, you can likewise access it through accomplishments on your profile or
Add section.
NOTE 17. Ask for Recommendations and Give Recommendations
Recommendations represent independent reviews of you, your skills or business which
can go a long way toward establishing your expertise with potential viewers.
Recommendations can be given to or requested from your connections and it has been
said to give more recommendations in order to get recommendations.
Go to the profile of your recipient (someone you are connected to) and click on more
where you have the options to recommend or request for one.
Fill in your relationship or connection with and current position with the recipient at that
time.
Write a recommendation message or request in the text box
Be purposeful about accepting, requesting or giving recommendations by making sure it
is relevant to your profile.
To give recommendations,
Your status update is about establishing your reputation and opinion about a topic or
issue. It is also demonstrating your willingness to share information and tell that you are
active.
Your status update should provide value and be of interest to you and your networks. It
could also be a reminder on account as an article.
NOTE 19. Regularly Publish Posts
This is intertwined with the previous. Linkedin allows you to craft and publish your post
like you would on your blog. Publishing a post appears at the top of your profile which is
or is not visible to your network depending on your preference. Adding a picture to the
post adds a great effect on your profile. Remember, this post must be purposeful, relevant
and interesting to your connections.
NOTE 20. Review Group Memberships
Take time at least once a month to review groups that you are a member of and check if
they are offering valuable discussions and connection opportunities. This can be done
through ‘Work’ on your profile and click on groups.
After searching for your preferred type of group, before joining, it is wise to check out
the description of the group; what it is about, if it would be of relevance to you and also
the rules guiding the group. You can also see the admins of the group and your direct
connections before joining the group.
Here are some keys to note when joining a group;
Groups that teach you skills and help you do your job better.
Groups that have people with related industries to your that you can refer each other
Groups where your potential customers are hanging
Another great feature linkedin has is that you can message any of the group members
without being connected to them (after joining the group). You can as well post directly
through the group for its members to see or post through your profile and select who you
want to see the post, that is, the group.
NOTE 21. Daily LinkedIn Activity
There are so many activities that can be done daily on your profile. Some are;
• Endorse others
• Review recent profile views; check out those who have viewed your profile, might
find a potential member there.
