SUMMER HOLIDAY ASSIGNMENTS
A. Please solve the following chapters in your “Words and Expressions” workbook.
(a) A Letter to God
(b) Nelson Mandela
Note: Kindly solved the below assignment in your English Fair Copy.
B. READING COMPREHENSION
1. Is the Internet somehow responsible for reducing our collective intelligence? Web giant
Google, standing in for the internet in general, has been accused of everything from killing
critical thinking to ruining modern imagination. An article in a leading American magazine
has gone so far as to suggest that the internet is ‘flattening’ our intelligence by leaving us
unable to read offline. So, do these doomsayers have a point? Has the so-called information
revolution mortally wounded mankind’s ability to think critically?
2. We think not. It is hard to think of a technology that did not inspire fear when it was
introduced. Socrates feared the impact that writing would have on the way people thought.
Recent commentators have shown a Luddite attitude towards the internet in much the same
way that people once protested against the book. When the book became indispensable to our
intellectual pursuits, television was - and sometimes still is - characterized as the ‘idiot box’.
And now that the Internet has become so much a part of the fabric of our lives, reactions to it
have got stronger.
3. That the Internet has made so much information easily accessible to us in so short a time
has meant that we have developed the capacity to absorb information at a speed undreamt of
in history. This process is bound to affect our reading habits. While on paper, the reader must
focus on the author’s vision for a sustained period of time, on the Internet, she / he is free to
skip around and compose her/ his own narrative structure, reading a paragraph here or
there. Perhaps it is true that more people are getting their information online, at the expense
of reading offline. However, this is not a bad thing. The Internet makes us develop different
kinds of skills, such as locating information quickly and corroborating that information from
other sources. These skills can be just as demanding as wading through a 400-page book.
4. The mistake that critics of the Internet make is in regarding it as something of a
Frankenstein’s monster, a creation of mankind that has already spun out of control and will
come back to haunt him. But this is hardly accurate. When any civilization comes into contact
with a new technology, it changes in profound and unexpected ways. That's happened before
and will happen again.

C. READING COMPREHENSION (FACTUAL)
1. Overweight and obesity are affecting many countries in the world. More than 300 million
people are overweight or obese. In India, some people tent to me overweight because of their
high-calorie diet and lack of physical activities. In the United States, obesity is more prevalent
in the lower economic groups. Obesity is now well-recognized as a disease in its own right.
Though obesity commonly means being overweight, it is medically defined as an excess
amount of body fat. Some people, such as bodybuilders or other athletes with a lot of muscle,
can be overweight without being obese.
2. Women have more body fat than men. Usually, men with more than 25% body fat and
women with more than 30% body fat are regarded as obese. Obesity occurs when a person
consumes more calories than he or she burns.
3. Obesity tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic cause.Environmental factors refer to
lifestyle behaviors such as what a person eats and his or her level of physical activities.
Although you cannot change your genetic makeup, you can change your eating habits and
levels of activity. You can learn how to choose more nutritional meals which are low in fat and
become more active.
4. Then there are the physical factors. Negative emotions such as boredom, sadness and anger
respond to people who overeat. There is also ‘binge- eating’, when people eat large amount of
food thinking that they cannot control how much they are eating. Those with the most severe
binge - eating problems are also likely to have symptoms of depression and low self- esteem.
5. Obesity is health hazard. Several serious medical conditions have been linked to obesity,
including Type -2 Diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure and strokes. Obesity is linked
to higher rates of certain types of cancer. Other diseases and health problems linked to obesity
include gall bladder diseases and gallstones, liver diseases and deterioration of joints.
6. The benefits of exercise are much more than any other way of losing weight. Not only does
exercise help you lose weight but it also improves your fitness and flexibility and improves
skin texture. Exercises also free one from the harmful side-effects of crash dieting, slimming
capsules and the heat treatment used by slimming centres.

1. Two green plants are kept separately in oxygen-free containers, one in the dark and the
other in sunlight. It was observed that plants kept in the dark could not survive longer.
Give a reason for this observation.
Ans: The plant kept in the dark could not survive longer because it will not be able to produce the
oxygen required for its respiration by the process of photosynthesis. Oxygen is evolved as the
byproduct of photosynthesis during the photolysis of water and helps plants to survive longer
than is kept in sunlight.

2. List the events that take place during the process of photosynthesis in the proper
sequence.
Ans: The three events that occur during the process of photosynthesis are;
(i) Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll.

of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.
(iii) Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates (carbon assimilation).

3. How does Paramecium obtain its food?

And. In Paramecium, a unicellular protozoan, the hair-like outgrowth cilia are present on the entire
surface and help collect the food. They sweep the food inside the body through the oral groove.

4. List the role of each of the following in our digestive system:

(a) Hydrochloric acid
(b) Trypsin
(c) Muscular walls of the stomach
(d) Salivary amylase
Ans. (a) Role of hydrochloric acid: It helps to maintain the acidic pH in the stomach required for
activation of the enzyme pepsin that digests proteins in the stomach.
(b) Role of trypsin in our digestion system: Trypsin breaks down protein into smaller peptides
in the duodenum of the small intestine. It helps in digesting dietary protein by breaking the
chain of amino acids. It also activates some proenzymes present in pancreatic juice.
(c) Role of muscular walls in the stomach in our digestive system: The muscular walls in the
stomach contract periodically and thereby help in the churning and mixing of the food with
the digestive enzymes and HCI. It helps in chemical digestion.
(d) Role of salivary amylase in our digestive system: Salivary amylase found in saliva breaks
down the starch and converts it into the simplest sugar.

5. With the help of an activity, explain the action of saliva on the food we eat.
Ans: The action of saliva on the food we eat is explained with the help of activity as follows: Take
two test tubes, A and B. In test tube A, put one teaspoon full of boiled rice, and in test tube B,
keep one teaspoon full of boiled rice after chewing it for 3 to 5 minutes. Add 3.4 mL of water in
both test tubes and add a few drops of iodine solution to each test tube. In test tube A, the
colour of the rice changes because of the absence of any enzyme, while in test tube B, no
colour change is observed because when rice is chewed, the amylase enzyme present in saliva
breaks down the starch of rice to simple sugars.

6. Why is bile juice important in the process of digestion?

15. Why is the small intestine in herbivores longer than in carnivores?

Ans. The small intestine in herbivores is longer than in carnivores because herbivores eat plants,
rich in cellulose, which takes longer time for complete digestion by the enzymes present in
symbiotic bacteria. Therefore, they have longer small intestines. Carnivores feed on flesh,
which is easier to digest and does not contain cellulose. Therefore, they have shorter intestines
for the digestion of food eaten by them.

16. What will happen if mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands
Ans. Gastric glands secrete HCI, mucus, renin, and pepsin enzymes. The mucus protects the inner
lining of the stomach from the action of acidic HCI and enzymes. In the absence of mucus,
there would be erosion of the inner lining of the stomach, leading to acidity and ulcers.

23. Describe the process of nutrition in the amoeba with the help of a diagram.
Ans: Amoeba is a unicellular eukaryotic organism that exhibits a holozoic mode of nutrition. Five
steps are involved in this mode of nutrition:
Ingestion: Amoeba feeds on microscopic organisms. It takes in food using finger-like
projections called pseudopodia. It encircles the food and engulfs or ingests it by a process
called phagocytosis. The food comes to lie in a vesicle called a phagosome or food vacuole.
Digestion: A lysosome fuses with a phagosome, and complex substances are broken down
into simpler ones. Such a type of digestion that occurs within a cell is referred to as
Intracellular digestion. The digested food then diffuses into the cytoplasm.
Absorption and Assimilation: The digested food that has diffused into the cytoplasm is
quickly absorbed by the organism and converted into various constituents of protoplasm.
Egestion: The undigested food material reaches the rear end of the organism and is thrown
out by the process of exocytosis. The membrane of the vesicle fuses with the surface
membrane.
