Instructions for the Pinpoint Stimulation Design

Spreadsheet
HydraJet Calculations RETURN
Purpose

The purpose of the HydraJet Calculations sheet in this workbook is to calculate the jetting time
needed to cut a specified distance into the formation before breakdown. These calculations
include a correlation based on work done by Pekarek, Lowe and Huitt and presented in a paper in
1963 (SPE #421). The correlation relates the velocity of both the fluid and the particles in the
abrasive jet to the impingement velocity and subsequent erosion of the pipe wall and formation
rock. All input cells are highlighted in blue. All results cells are highlighted yellow. The final
results of this sheet are intended to help design the jetting stage size for a CobraMax or SurgiFrac
treatment.
Select from the dropdown menu the appropriate tool. These tools are based on currently
Step 1 available sizes, although custom sizes can be produced as needed. The program uses the
O.D., I.D. and number of holes in the selected tool for velocity and jet calculations.
Select from the dropdown menu the O.D. of the casing the HydraJet tool will be cutting
Step 2
through.
Select from the dropdown menu the casing grade. The program uses this in the calculations
Step 3
for jetting through different types of steel.
Select from the dropdown menu the casing weight. The program uses this to determine the
Step 4
I.D. of the pipe for the jetting time calculations.
Enter the desired depth you wish to penetrate past the O.D. of the casing. If unsure of what
Step 5
number to use, click the "Reset to Default Values" button to enter the default value.
From the dropdown menu, select the nozzle size you wish to use. Remember that not all of
Step 6 the sizes available in the menu are available. Only 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4" nozzles are currently
used.
Enter the desired number of nozzles you with to use in the tool. If you choose too many a
Step 7 warning message will indicate you need to lower the number. It may take several iterations
between nozzle size, number, and pumping rate to get the desired differential pressure for
jetting.
Enter the discharge coefficient value of your choice. The default value is 0.9 and is based on
Step 8
a new set of the newly redesigned jet inserts.
Enter the flow rate in the tubing. A good beginning guess is 1 BPM / nozzle. Remember,
Step 9 2,000 - 3,000 psi is good for jetting on a CobraMax job, but around 5,000 psi is needed for a
SurgiFrac procedure.
Enter the base fluid density of the jetting fluid. The program uses this in the differential
Step 10
pressure and jetting time calculations.

Step 11
Enter a sand concentration. The default (and most widely used) concentration is 1 lb/gal.
From the dropdown menu, select the proppant being used for jetting. Most of the proppants
available in the Materials Library have been entered into this spreadsheet along with the data
Step 12 for each proppant needed to calculate jet solid velocities, jetting times, fluid densities, etc.
This data has been hidden to protect this data from general release. Sorry, but I had to
promise. If your proppant is not available in the list, choose the next closest proppant in terms
of size, mesh, and density. The calculations should still be close.
Results
The most important things to look at from this sheet are the differential pressure being generated, the
recommended jetting time and the volumes needed. Again, it may take several iterations to achieve the
desired affect. There is also an indicator that lets you know when bridging is likely to occur across the
jets.

Velocity Calculations RETURN

Purpose

The purpose of the Velocity Calculations sheet in this workbook is to ensure that the job can be performed
safely and with a minimum of erosion on the treating lines or tubulars. Volumes and areas are also
calculated. All input cells are highlighted blue. All results cells are highlighted yellow. The velocities
calculated and limits are based on current best practices and cannot be changed. If a velocity exceeds its
recommended limit, the cell for velocity will highlight to indicate this. As you progress through the sheets
note that more and more of the data used in a sheet relies on data entered on previous sheets. If, for
instance, the tubing rate needs to be changed on the Velocity Calculations sheet, then you must go back
to the HydraJet Calculations sheet to do so.
Enter the Coiled Tubing O.D. If the treatment is being performed down jointed pipe, the O.D.
Step 1 of this pipe may be entered, but the results do not include velocities around joints.

Step 2 Enter the Coiled Tubing wall thickness. Wall thickness of jointed pipe can also be entered.

Enter the I.D. of the Coiled Tubing swivel. This is the inlet port on the Coiled Tubing unit that
allows the unit to move pipe in and out of the well while pumping. If Coiled Tubing is being
used, it is important to know the swivel I.D. Most units have a 2 inch swivel that is normally
Step 3 too small for fracturing rates. A 3 inch swivel is recommended for SurgiFrac operations.

Enter the Coiled Tubing Jetting depth. This is from the reference point on the well at surface
to its run-in depth where the volume calculations are performed. Also note that this depth can
Step 4 be different than the Perforation Depth so that coil movement is taken into account.
Enter the Total Coiled Tubing on Reel. This length is BEFORE running in hole. It is an
Step 5 important number not only for volumes, but for the friction calculation as well.

Enter the Flow Rate Down the Annulus. This is mainly for velocity concerns on a CobraMax
Step 6 treatment, but is also useful on SurgiFrac and certainly SurgiFrac AP treatments.

Enter the I.D. of the Flow Cross Inlets. This is the MINIMUM I.D. of the inlets to the wellhead
Step 7 configuration on the annular side. This value must be known for accurate calculations.
Enter the Number of Inlets. This splits up the velocity equally between inlets in the velocity
Step 8 calculations.
Enter the BOP I.D. This is the MINIMUM I.D. for any wellhead configuration that "sees" fluid
Step 9 flow.
Step 10 Enter the Depth to the Top of Current Perforations. This is for a total well annular volume.
Results
The Results of this sheet include:
Velocities around and through the tubing.*
Velocities through the Coiled Tubing Swivel.*
Velocities around and through the HydraJet Tool assembly.*
Impingement velocity on the Coiled Tubing through the Flow Cross.*
* - Each of the velocity cells will highlight if the recommended limit is exceeded.
Area calculations based on entered data for reference.
Volume Calculations based on entered data for reference.

Erosion Graphs RETURN

Purpose

The purpose of the Erosion Graphs sheet is to give a visual demonstration of the jet impingement
calculation and a comparison of the results to empirical data from the Halliburton HydraJet manual. The
Fluid and Proppant Velocities from Center graph represents the results of the correlation used to
calculate the velocities of both the fluid and aggregate as it moves through the jet, annulus and wellbore
wall. These velocities are then used to calculate the erosion speed and jetting times. The three graphs
below represent the jetting erosion speed calculated from the correlation and are overlaying graphs from
the HydraJetting Manual. Depending on the casing size and differential pressure, the graph closest to the
simulated conditions should closely match with the calculation.
Sand Plug Calculations RETURN
Purpose

The purpose of the Sand Plug Calculations sheet is to help determine the size of the last sand stage that
needs to stay in the wellbore in order to set the sand plug required for the next zone's treatment. This
sheet's graphic also indicates when the final proppant stage is above the tool after a shut down and when
the tool is likely to become stuck during the sand plug setting stage.
Enter the Plug Back Total Depth or the Depth of the last Sand Plug. All sand volume
Step 1 calculations work from this reference depth.
Enter the Desired Top of Sand. This is used to calculate the volume required to fill, unless the
Step 2 override proppant volume is used, in which case this cell blacks out.

Enter the Average Proppant Concentration in Well. Typically, you will wish to use the
proppant concentration of the last sand stage in the design. The proppant used in the
calculations is the one selected on the HydraJet Calculations sheet. If you desire to change
Step 3 this you must go back to the HydraJet Calculations sheet and re-select a proppant type/size.
Step 4 Enter the Current coil depth. This has been added for flexibility and quick calcs.

* If desired, you may enter a rate, pressure response and estimated viscosity of fluid moving
through the proppant plug to estimate it's height. This height is calculated based on the
assumption that the top of the last set of perforations is taking the fluid. You must have a
known treating pressure of this formation and have confidence that you are not displacing the
sand plug into the formation. The GC sand height us using a Gulf Coast correlation while
Darcy is using Darcy's law of flow through a porous media.
** If desired, you may override the calculations by entering a weight of sand in the blue cell
next to the calculated value. This overrides all calculations and gives new estimates for the
height and volume of the plug. The cell below the blue entry cell is the new estimated top of
sand.
Results
Proppant Required for Plug in pounds and also in cubic feet.
The clean volume required to pump the calculated proppant at the desired concentration.
The dirty volume of the sand plug stage.
The height of the sand at ISIP. This is used to indicate that sometimes the tool is still below
sand after shut down. While this usually does not cause a problem, bridging and sticking
could occur. The graphic helps to indicate the possibility. Light brown sand is still in slurry
and before settling. Dark brown is settled sand.

Depth of the last sand stage at ISIP.

Min. Nozzle Dia. RETURN
The Min. Nozzle Dia. Sheet in this workbook is intended to be used as a quick reference for
Purpose bridging of aggregate on the nozzles. The data is gathered from an article by John E. Smith in
World Oil, June 1991. A certain minimum size orifice is recommended based on both
proppant concentration and size. The HydraJet Calculations sheet also has indicators that

Purpose RETURN
The purpose of the BHA's sheet in this workbook is for a quick reference of part numbers for
all tools and tool elements associated with Pinpoint Stimulation.

SurgiFrac Proppant Dilution RETURN

Purpose

In SurgiFrac operations, the contribution of the annulus rate not assumed to be controlling
leakoff must be taken into account for calculating the proppant concentration actually going
into the formation. This sheet gives a straight calculation based on input estimations for
leakoff rate and annulus and tubing rates based on inputs from other pages.
Enter an estimated leakoff rate in the annulus. This number is very hard to estimate and can
Step 1 only truly be found with a pre-stage injection/step-up test.
Step 2 Enter the proppant concentration you wish to see the dilution calculations for.
Results
Some of the results from the proppant side are:
Clean rate at the blender
Slurry density at the blender
Sand rate at the blender
Proppant concentration in the fracture (after dilution)

Slurry density in the fracture (after dilution)

SurgiFrac Acid Dilution RETURN

Purpose

In SurgiFrac operations, the contribution of the annulus rate not assumed to be controlling
leakoff must be taken into account for calculating the concentrations of dilute additives such
as acids and salts actually going into the formation. This sheet is intended to give great
flexibility in salt and acid concentrations both in the annular fluid and tubing fluid. It is based
on input estimations for leakoff rate and annulus and tubing rates based on inputs from other
pages.

Enter a rough estimation of the bottom hole treating temperature for base fluid density
Step 1 calculations.
Step 2 Enter the material concentrations for both the annular and tubing fluid.
Results

The results of these density calculations are based on correlations created by Marten Bruijse
for use in the mix.xls spreadsheet to calculate the fluid density for brines and acids. This
spreadsheet goes a step further and does mixing calculations downhole for a Pinpoint
stimulation treatment. The final fluid concentrations are based on % by weight of solution for
the acids and % by weight of water for the brines. The final concentrations are accurate to
less than .1% and the final density is accurate to less than .01 ppg according to Marten Bruijse
for the following limits:
► The assumption is that the HF acid concentration is made using ABF.
► The acetic acid concentration is valid for concentrations < 40%
► The formic acid concentration is valid for concentrations < 40%
► There is no density data for glycolic acid. Therefore, acetic acid properties were assumed.
► NH4Cl has a maximum concentration of 24%
► NaCl has a maximum concentration of 26%
► NaBr has a maximum concentration of 40%
► KCl has a maximum concentration of 24%
► CaCl2 has a maximum concentration of 40%
► AlCl3 has a maximum concentration of 55%

These calculations will also be used in the hydrostatic calculation for treating pressure.

Flowback RETURN
Purpose

The purpose of the Flowback sheet in this workbook is to determine the flowrate of either gas
or fluid through various sizes of chokes and at pressures ranging from 100-10,000 psi.
Step 1 Enter a gas gravity. A beginning estimated range should be between 0.65 - 0.7.
*You may enter a new discharge coefficient and specific heat ratio if they are known.
Step 2 Scroll down to enter a flowback fluid density for the water flowback table.
Results
The results of pressure vs. flowback rate can be seen by scrolling through the tables or down
to the graphs.

Design Schedule RETURN

Purpose

The purpose of the Design Schedule sheet is to lay out a beginning summary of the job
schedule, by stages for pricing. This sheet incorporates my best efforts at calculating tubing
and annulus treating pressures as well as volumes and proppant weights. A user has the
ability to enter up to 100 stages. A "free" sheet has also been added so that the user can
build a tailored report to fit any need. A job plot has also been added to help visualize the
treatment schedule and give an indication of time. PLEASE NOTE: The friction calculations
currently only work when the sheet is set to "English" units.
Enter the base fluid and acid densities for hydrostatic calculations. These densities are
Step 1 independent for flexibility of the spreadsheet. If the fluid chosen is "fresh water", the density is
8.337 lb/gal by default.
Enter the Tubing schedule. All proppant types per stage can be filled in from the 1st stage as
Step 2
a reference by hitting the "Fill Down" button.
Enter the Annulus schedule. All proppant types per stage can be filled in from the 1st stage
Step 3 as a reference by hitting the "Fill Down" button. Please note that the volumes for tubing and
annulus are not linked and must be matched using the calculation buttons.
Click the appropriate button to calculate the tubing volumes to match the annulus dirty stage
Step 4 volumes (CobraMax) or to calculate the annulus volumes to match the tubing dirty volumes
(SurgiFrac).
Results
The results from the schedule currently include:
► Tubing dirty stage volume.
► Tubing Stage Proppant Weight.
► Tubing Cumulative Proppant Weight.

Maximum Tubing Pressure per Stage. Tubing pressure is dependent on a "best guess" at the
current hydrostatic pressure in the wellbore, the nozzle pressure drop, a "best guess" at tubing
friction, and an entered BHTP gradient. These guesses are made based on tubing and casing
sizes entered on the HydraJet Calculations sheet. Note that this pressure is ONLY a best
guess and should be confirmed using stimulation design software.
► Maximum Nozzle Pressure Drop per Stage. This is the same calculation used on the
HydraJet Calculations sheet, but with the current rate base fluid density and proppant type
and concentration.
► Annulus Dirty Stage Volume.

Annulus Stage Proppant Weight.
► Annulus Cumulative Proppant Weight.

Maximum Annulus Pressure per Stage. This is base on a "best guess" at annulus friction and
hydrostatic pressure to the top perforation specified in the Velocity Calculations sheet.
► Stage Time. Stage time is dependent on the tubing or annulus, whichever has the highest
rate.
