Course title: DIGITAL LITERACY

Specialty: SWE 1

Lecturer: Mme BIHINA MARILYN

I. File Management
Files serve as containers for information, embodying documents, programs, multimedia, and much more.
Efficient file management encompasses a range of crucial tasks, such as creating, deleting, and renaming
files, as well as organizing them within a hierarchical structure.

1. Basic Definitions

 File Management: The process and act of creating an organized structure in which you store
information for easy retrieval.
 Drive: A drive is a computer storage device that holds information. It is the top-level location (or
"Root" directory) for file storage. Drives are usually designated with a letter such as C:\ (which
is typically the hard drive of the computer you are working on).
 Folder: A folder is a storage location within a drive. Another term for a folder is a "dirfolder
exampleectory", however the term "folder" has become the term of choice for most. A folder can
consist of files or additional folders (called "Subfolders").
 File: A computer file is defined as a medium used for saving and managing data in the computer
system.

A file can be a document, spreadsheet, image, or other type of item that is stored on a computer. Files
are typically associated with a program or software application that is needed in order to open the item.

 File Extension: The file extension appears after the period in the filename and is used to indicate
the type of format the file is in. For example the file extension ".docx" indicates that the file is a
Microsoft Word document. A complete filename using this extension may look like this: "Letter
to Mom.docx"
 Path: The path refers to the exact location of the file and indicates to the computer user the entire
sequence that must be followed to find the file. The path begins with the drive and then includes
any folders or subfolders that house the file. In the screenshot above, a Microsoft Word document
named "paper1.docx" that is stored in the "Papers" folder would have the path:
C:\English\Papers\paper1.docx.

2. File Management in OS

File management in an operating system refers to the set of processes and techniques involved in
creating, organizing, accessing, manipulating, and controlling files stored on storage devices such as
hard drives, solid-state drives, or network storage. It encompasses a range of tasks and functionalities
that ensure efficient handling of files, including their creation, deletion, naming, classification, and
protection.

Windows Explorer on Windows OS: Windows Explorer is the default file management system on
Windows operating systems. It allows users to organize and manage files and folders and search for and
access files.

3. File attributes

They include information describing the file, such as:

 Name
 Type
 Size
 creation date
 author
 last modified

II. CLOUD COMPUTING

1. The cloud

What is the cloud? "The cloud" refers to servers that are accessed over the Internet, and the software and
databases that run on those servers. Cloud servers are in data centers all over the world. By using cloud
computing, users and companies do not have to manage physical servers themselves or run software
applications on their own
machines.

The cloud enables users to

access the same files and
applications from almost any
device,
because the computing and
2
storage takes place on servers in a data centre, instead of locally
on the user device. Therefore, a user can log into their Instagram account on a new phone
after their old phone breaks and still find their old account in place, with all their photos,
videos, and conversation history. It works the same way with cloud email providers like
Gmail or Microsoft Office 365, and with cloud storage providers like Dropbox or Google
Drive.
For businesses, switching to cloud computing removes some IT costs and overhead: for
instance, they no longer need to update and maintain their own servers, as the cloud vendor
they are using will do that.

2. Cloud Computing

The term “Cloud Computing” refers to services provided by the cloud that is responsible for
delivering of computing services such as servers, storage, databases, networking, software,
analytics, intelligence, and more, over the Cloud (Internet).
Cloud computing applies a virtualized platform with elastic resources on demand by provisioning
hardware, software, and data sets dynamically.

Cloud Computing provides an alternative to the on-premises data center. With an on premises data
center, we must manage everything, such as purchasing and installing
hardware, virtualization, installing the operating system, and any other required applications,
setting up the network, configuring the firewall, and setting up storage for data. After doing
all the set-up, we become responsible for maintaining it through its entire lifecycle.
However, if we choose Cloud Computing, a cloud vendor is responsible for the hardware
purchase and maintenance.
