3 Problem Solving
OBJECTIVE 1 The learner will use Polyas four-step method to solve word problems. My Math Lab Homework Problems 1-8 Why is problem solving important? Who was George Polya?

Polyas Four-Step Method for Solving Word Problems

Understand the problem - What are you asked for? Would a diagram help? Can you write the problem in your own words?

Devise a Plan - guess and check, tables, patterns, diagrams, lists

C arry out the plan - try and try again

Look back and check your answer - Does you answer make sense? Does it answer the question in the problem?

Example: Place the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in the circles below so that the horizontal and vertical sums are the same.

Understand the problem. Can we draw any conclusions about the middle number?

Devise a plan. What would be a good strategy?

Carry out the plan.

Look back and check your solution. Are there other solutions?

Example: You get a package of meat for $9.84. If it costs $1.21 a pound, how many pounds did you buy? 1) Understand the problem

2) Devise a plan.

3) Carry out the plan and solve the problem.

4) Look back and check the answer.

Example: In a football game, the Gators score three touchdowns (7 points each), 3 field goals (3 points each), and one safety (2 points each). The Bulldogs score 4 touchdowns and one field goal. Who won and by how much?

Example: A baker sold 11 apple pies for $12.75 each. The ingredients cost $54.78. How much profit did she make?

Example: page 35 # 23: A storeowner ordered 25 calculators ($30 each). He can sell the calculators for $35. He sold 22 and had to return 3 and pay a $2 charge for each returned calculator. Find his profit.

Example: I have 25 cents in my pocket. I dont have any pennies. How many different coin combinations could be in my pocket? Strategy: Make a table. Quarters Dimes Nickels

Example: At Liza Jackson, 8th graders can wear one of five shirts: green, sky blue, navy blue, or white polo shirts as well as a class t-shirt. They can wear shorts and pants in either khaki or navy blue. My daughter remarks that she has to wear the same thing every day. How many different clothing combinations are actually available for Hannah to wear? Strategy: Draw a tree diagram.

Example: Alex, Bill, Catherine, Dionne, and Ed are on a committee. This month, two of them must give a short speech to their company. In how many different ways can the two speakers be selected?

Example: The NCAA tournament begins with 64 teams. Any team that loses is eliminated. How many games must be played determine a champion?

Example: If a test has four true-false questions, in how many ways can there be two true answers and two false answers?

Example: Fred, Phil, Callie, Bella, and Dylan were in a race. Fred finished seven seconds before Callie. Phil finished six seconds after Bella. Dylan finished eight seconds after Bella. Callie finished two seconds before Phil. In what order did they finish? How many seconds faster was the first place finisher than the last?
