THE 1. What is the reading all about?
READING The Rizal Law, officially designated as Republic Act No. 1425, is a
Philippine law that mandates all educational institutions in the Philippines to
offer courses about José Rizal. The Rizal Law was emphatically opposed by
the Catholic Church in the Philippines, mostly due to the anti-clericalism in
Rizal's books Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo.
2. What did you learn from the article?
The Rizal Law plays a significant role in forming a common awareness of the
country's history and heritage by requiring that Rizal's legacy be included in
the curriculum of educational institutions. By doing so, it ensures that future
generations carry forth this important information and sense of identity.
3. How does the article relate to the lesson?
The article focuses on the subject's lesson, which is to talk about the Rizal
R.A. 1425 Bill's importance, go over the relevance of Jose Rizal's two greatest works,
The Rizal Law and explain how Rizal gave the Filipinos a sense of independence again and
became a national hero.
How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
Nationalism is an ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to
a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other
individual or group interests. The article can instill a sense of nationalism to
it’s Filipino reader by reiterating the events of the past and helping the reader
understand the purpose and intent of the RA 1425.
How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
By immersing students in Rizal’s life and works, his and other heroes’ legacy,
the students may inherit their will to protect the Philippines, it’s heritage and
future. Furthermore, it can instill a sense of pride in the students for the
country, as a student myself, I feel quite proud that a man like Rizal was a
Filipino. The responsibility to lead the country into a brighter future falls upon
ours, the new generation’s shoulders.
How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
The Rizal Law indirectly promotes volunteerism by establishing a sense of
duty for one's country, even if this is not its main goal. The ideas of
voluntarism and civic duty can be embodied by students when they learn
about Rizal's love for the Philippines and are inspired to engage in volunteer
work and community service.
