So the 3-Dimensional Schrodinger equation in spherical polar coordinates can be solved via the
method of separation of variables when the potential is independent of time. Hence we can
split the overall wave function into a radial part and an angular part. Now, the solutions to the
radial part is often called the radial wave function and the angular part as the angular part of
the wave function. These individually describe the probability of finding the particle as a
function of r(radial distance) or theta and phi. Radial nodes are those points where the radial
part of the wave function is 0 a… (more)

Related What are radial nodes and planar nodes?

A node is a point where the electron probability is zero.

For a given orbital there are two types of nodes.

1) Radial node 2) Angular node

Radial node is also called as nodal region. Radial node is a spherical surface where the
probability of finding an electron is zero.

The number of radial nodes increase with principle quantum number (n).

Angular node is also called nodal plane.

Angular node is a plane that passing through the nucleus.

Angular node is equal to the azimuthal quantum number (l).

The number of angular nodes = l

The number of radial nodes = (n - l - 1)

Total number of nodes = n - 1

Radial nodes are also called as nodal regions or spherical nodes.

Angular nodes are also called as nodal planes or non spherical nodes.

At radial nodes, Wave function (si)is zero. Probability of finding electron is zero. Number of
radial nodes for an orbital = n-l-1.

Coming to nodal planes, it is the plane for the orbital where electron is not there.

For example nodal plane of px orbital is yz.

Number of angular nodes for an orbital =l.

Finally the difference between type of nodes is angular node is a plane where electron is not
found whereas nodal region is like a point area

No. of angular nodes = l

No. of radial nodes = n-l-1

Total no. of nodes = radial nodes + angular nodes = n-1

Here, n = principal quantum number; l = azimuthal quantum number;

eg.:-

For 5f sub-shell,

n = 5 and l for f sub-shell is 3

so no. of angualr nodes = l = 3; no. of radial nodes = n-l-1 = 5–3–1 = 1; total no. of nodes = 3

Related What is the number of radial nodes and angular nodes present in a 5D
orbital?
A 5D orbital has a principal quantum number (n) of 5. The number of radial nodes in an orbital
is given by n-l-1, where l is the angular momentum quantum number.

For a 5D orbital, l = 2. Therefore, the number of radial nodes is 5-2-1 = 2.

The number of angular nodes in an orbital is given by l. Therefore, for a 5D orbital, there are 2
angular nodes.

In summary, a 5D orbital has 2 radial nodes and 2 angular nodes.
