Assignment I
Total Marks (𝟏𝟎)
Note that:
The assignment will be delivered, in your section, to TA.
First page must contain all your required information (Name, ID Number,
Academic Level, …etc.).
Assignment must be written in 𝐴4 papers, without crossing out on papers.
Papers must be delivered in a file or joined with a staple.
Answers must include steps and final results.
Answer the following Questions:

Question (1): 2 Marks


A box contains three marbles — one red, one green, and one blue. Consider an
experiment that consists of taking one marble from the box, then replacing it in and
drawing a second marble from the box. Describe the sample space. Repeat for the
case in which the second marble is drawn without first replacing the first marble.

Question (2): 2 Marks


Two dice are thrown. Let 𝐸 be the event that the sum of the dice is odd, let 𝐹 be the
event that the first die lands on 1, and let 𝐺 be the event that the sum is 5. Describe
the events 𝐸 ∩ 𝐹, 𝐸 ∪ 𝐹, 𝐹 ∩ 𝐺, 𝐸 ∩ 𝐹 𝑐 , 𝐸 ∩ 𝐹 ∩ 𝐺.

Question (3): 2 Marks


Fifty-two percent of the students at a certain college are females. Five percent of the
students in this college are majoring in computer science. Two percent of the students
are women majoring in computer science. If a student is selected at random, find the
following probabilities
(a) this student is female, given that the student is majoring in computer science;
(b) this student is majoring in computer science, given that the student is female.

A computer program is tested by 3 independent tests. When there is an error, these
tests will discover it with probabilities 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5, respectively. Suppose that
the program contains an error. What is the probability that it will be found by at least
one test?

Question (5): 1 Marks


A child has 12 blocks, of which 6 are black, 4 are red, 1 is white, and 1 is blue. If the
child puts the blocks in a line, how many arrangements are possible?

Question (6): 1 Marks


For years, telephone area codes in the United States and Canada consisted of a
sequence of three digits. The first digit was an integer between 2 and 9, the second
digit was either 0 or 1, and the third digit was any integer from 1 to 9. How many
area codes were possible? How many area codes starting with a 4 were possible?
