Lesson 1: Fundamental Dance Positions

Dance is a source of entertainment and a good healthy lifestyle. But as for the Philippine
folk dances, we see a bigger picture and a deeper meaning. A traditional dance in the
Philippines connects us to a place’s culture. It is about history, traditions and majestic beauty
of the place it is associated with. The cultural dances in the Philippines evolved from different
regions which are distinct from one another as they are affected by religion and culture. Before
you learned different folk dances, we have Fundamental positions which includes five
positions both arms and feet.

➢ Fundamental Position of Arms

1. Arms are raised forward forming circle I front of the chest with fingertips of both
hands about an inch apart.
2. The arms are placed sideways a little below shoulder level with palms facing up.
3. The right arm is raised above the head forming half a circle (amplified position), while
the left arm remains in the position.
4. The right arm is still raised and remains in an amplified position, while the left arm is
placed in front of the chest, as in the first position.
5. Both arms are raised forming a circle over the head in an amplified position.
➢ Fundamental Position of Feet

1. Both heels are together while toes are apart at an angle at both 45 or more.
2. Both feet apart sideward about a pace distance. Heels are parallel to each other.
3. The right heel of one foot is close to the instep of the left foot.
4. The right foot is forward about a pace distance with toes out.
