Apart from the valleys of the Narmada and the Tapti, the area of Madhya Pradesh has a
plateau region in between the mountains of the Vindhya and the Satpura ranges.
The Project area lies in Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary of Sehore district. Out of this district
85% of the area is occupied by Deccan trap, about 10% by alluvium and about 5% of the area
by Vindhyan formations. The general geological succession of project area is given in table
3-1.

Panna Plateau.
3.3 Tectonic Setup
Geologically, Indore is part of the Deccan trap, which is made principally of volcanic rocks
of basaltic composition, which is characterized by amygdular & vesicular structures. About
60 Kms away from Indore, river Narmada flows in a rift zone flanked with faults, folds and
fractures.
3.3.1 Tectonic Divisions
The area under Indore has relevance to the following tectonic set-up:
An extensive area in the west central part of India covered by thick volcanic effusives shows
regional negative enomally. It seems to represent a major negative platform structure with
appreciale thickness of Cuddapah, Vindhyan, Gondawana and mesozoic sequences are
present suggesting that some of the sequences may show a basin ward increase in thickness
below the traps.
3.3.2 Tectonic Evolution
The area under study is influenced by the evolution of Vindhyan sequence and igneous
activity represented by the Deccan trap flows.
Extensive areas of the Indian platform underwent subsidence either overlies unconformably
the Cuddapah or rests directly on the basement. The Cuddapah and the Vindhyan sequences
wherever they occur together are separated by a period intensive tectonic activity resulting
in a major change in the pre-existing structural pattern. The Vindhyan is much less
disturbed, practically devoid of metamorphism with less frequent basic intrusives. The
sequence shows extensive development to the north of Narmada fault zone in the Vindhyan
synclise. The Vindhyans are considered to range in age from proterozoic to lower paleozoic.
The Vindhyans represent stable shelf sediments in the outcrop areas changing to red
sandstones towards the top-most part. The Indian platform after the close of Vindhyan
sedimentation experienced position movement and remained uplifted within end of middle
carboniferous.
A significant point in the evolution of Indian platform is marked by the very wide-spread
igneous 390 activity represented by the Deccan trap lava flows covering an extensive area
of the platform mostly conferred to the central & western India. The area under study is
situated in this region. These represents Plateau Basalts with alternating inter-trappean
sediments. The Deccan traps range from upper Cretaceous to Lower Eocene though they are
confined to Meso-Cenozoic transition period. In some cases, these have attained a thickness
over 2000 meters. The evolution of the Deccan syncline was completed with this event.

3.4.3 Basalt
Based on geological surface mapping and borehole data. The strong to very strong, jointed,
reddish-brown color fine grained, basalt has been observed. This reddish-brown color is due
to oxidation of iron-bearing minerals. These basaltic deposits exhibit a spectrum of
weathering states, ranging from highly weathered near the surface to relatively fresh at
greater depths within the tunnel. This weathering process results in significant mineralogical
changes, with primary minerals like plagioclase and pyroxene altering to secondary minerals
such as clay and iron oxides. These features are indicative of prolonged exposure to
weathering processes.

• The Malwa Plateau, on which the project area is situated, slopes gently
towards the north and east, suggesting that the lava flowed accordingly.
• The layering of basalt flows, with inter-trappean beds (sedimentary layers
between basalt flows-red bole), provides further clues about the sequence
and direction of eruptions.
• The flow generally has a gentle dip, typically around 5°-10°, indicating a
near-horizontal alignment.
3.5.3 Spheroidal Weathering
Spheroidal weathering is a type of chemical weathering that creates rounded boulders and
helps to create domed monoliths involving concentric or spherical layers of highly decayed
rock within weathered bedrock. The spheroidal weathering structures have been observed
near Portal-2 of Tunnel-1 and in the depression area of Tunnel-2. Figure 3-7 shows
spheroidal weathering.

The chimney formation is considered as an incidence of heavy rockfall, or debris flow
condition associated with heavy flow of water, disrupting further tunneling work, despite
taking due precautions in the poor to very poor rock mass conditions especially in low rock
cover locations. The bidder is required to include the cost for such occurrences in his bid.
3.6 Groundwater and hydrogeology
The groundwater conditions interpretations are based on the drainage pattern, water tables
in the drillholes and permeability tests data. The detailed test results are present in GDR.
The depth of ground water tables obtained in the boreholes are given in table 3-3 & table

3.8 Previous Railway Tunneling and Construction Experience
The previous railway tunneling projects have been constructed in Budni-Barkhera area. The
drill and blast method (DBM) shall be adopted for excavation of all underground works,
portal works and foundations. Mechanical excavation may be required in low cover zones,
especially at nallah and national highway crossings.
3.9 Seismicity
As per IS 1893: 2002, the area lies in Seismic Zone III. The Seismic risk Map of Madhya
Pradesh, showing the study area in SEISMIC ZONE III, Moderate damage corresponding to
intensity VII of MM scale (MM = Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale).
In the recent past, a couple of events triggered the entire state (including the 1997 Jabalpur
Earthquake). After that, the earthquake is being taken quite seriously here. However, as
per Vulnerability Atlas of India 2007, there are 28 districts come under Zone III, as per IS
1893: 2002, and the Horizontal Ground Acceleration (amax) = 0.16 and 22 districts come
under Zone II, as per IS 1893: 2002, and the Horizontal Ground Acceleration (amax) = 0.10,
of earthquake. In addition to it, a state level Madhya Pradesh Earthquake Study has been
carried out just recently. The study has emphasized the need of the revision of seismic
zoning map of the state. And as per the recent categorization, some of the districts have
been categorized under high seismic zone IV (earthquake prone high-risk zone), and rest of
those have been covered under zone III and zone II. Hence on the basis of the Vulnerability
Atlas of India, and recently carried out MP Earthquake Study, the districts have been
categorized into the High, Medium and Low hazard prone. In the district wise hazard analysis
table, earthquake hazard has been categorized into the following.
• High earthquake prone districts are those, which are proposed for Zone IV, by
MP Earthquake study.
• Medium earthquake prone districts are those, which come under the moderately
high-risk Zone III
•
Low earthquake prone districts are those, which come under Low damage risk
Zone II
The presence of a single tectonic plate in Deccan along with strong rocks beneath, the earth
surface makes the Deccan plateau stable. It is very low prone to any tectonic activities. The
seismic zoning map is shown in figure 3-13.

3.10.6 Surface Development, Topographical and Environmental Conditions affecting Project Layout
3.10.6.1 Surface Development
The ongoing surface development project encompasses various tasks, including widening
the National Highway (NH) road, constructing railway viaducts 1 and 2, as well as developing
tunnels 1 and 2. These activities are integral components of the broader initiative aimed at
enhancing the infrastructure and transportation network in the area.
3.10.6.2 Topographical
The minimum and maximum rock covers along the alignment of tunnel-1 are found to be 5m
and 39m respectively. Similarly, for tunnel 2, the minimum and maximum rock covers are
found to be 3.3m and 155m respectively. From a topographical perspective, no significant
impacts are anticipated.
3.10.6.3 Environmental
A considerable amount of data has been shared by the client to the consultant. A detailed
topographic survey is to be required for tunnels portals and tunnel alignment.
No hydrological survey has been provided to the consultant in the project area. Consultant
plans to assess the hydrological requirements for tunnels based on catchment area and
rainfall data of the project alignment.

agricultural land. Portal 1 location is shown in figure 4-1. No unstable rock mass has been
observed at the portal location.
The portal area has been explored through exploratory drilling (T1-BH 12, T1-BH 13 and T1-
BH 14). The bed rock was encountered at the surface. The bed rock is pale brown to pale
grey in colour, highly jointed, fine grained and moderately weak vesicular/ferruginous
basalt. A thin layer of iron coating is present along the joints. The core recovery and RQD
ranges from 20% to 74% and 0 to 44% respectively.
Portal 2 of Tunnel (T1) is located at Chainage 34+400 km, near NH 47. The portal area is
covered with thin overburden. The overburden consists of graven and boulders of weathered
basalt with black soil.
The portal area has been explored through exploratory drilling (T1-BH 26, T1-BH 27 andT1-
BH 28) at the center and side slopes of proposed portal. The bedrock was encountered at
up to 1m depth. The rock is moderately to highly weathered, greyish brown in color, and
fine-grained vesicular basalt. The core recovery and RQD range varies from 12% to 76% and
0 to 61% respectively. The proposed portal location is shown in the figure 4-2.

rock cover above the tunnel is 5m and 39m, respectively. The lateral and vertical cover is
sufficient along the tunnel route.
The entire length of the tunnel passes through the basalt of the Malwa region of the Deccan
Plateau area. The rock mass is dissected by three sets of joints, plus random, including
bedding. The average orientations of the joints are: J1 (Bedding) - 75°/011°, J2 - 80°/060°,
and J3 - 77°/220°. The persistence of the discontinuities ranges from 3 to 15 meters, with
spacing ranging from 1 to 6 cm. The joint planes are rough, ranging from undulating to
planar, with apertures of 1 to 10 mm.
The entire tunnel length has been well investigated through geological mapping and
exploratory drilling.
A geological long section has been prepared along the tunnel based on surface geological
mapping and exploratory drilling. The core recovery range varies from 12% to 99% and Rock
Quality Designation (RQD) from nil to 95% indicates very poor to good rock mass.
The water table has been recorded in drill holes which are above and below the tunnel
level. The anticipated ground water condition is dry to dripping. The flowing condition was
also anticipated at few locations especially in nalla crossing and lithological contacts /
sheared rock mass.
Based on RMR classification, the anticipated rock mass classification along the tunnel
projected from the outcrop in the vicinity and drill hole data using RMR classification is Class
II -39%, Class III - 49%, IV-9% & V-3%.
The anticipated percentage of rock classes likely to encounter during tunneling have been
given only for estimate purpose with possible problematic zones. Since these are based on
projection with limited bed rock exposures and drill hole data, variation in terms of
chainages mentioned & percentage of rock class can be expected to some extent.
However, the advance probing, pipe roofing and pre-grouting has been kept in provision for
advancement of tunnel.
4.3.2 Geology and geotechnical evaluation along Tunnel 2
A main tunnel (T-2) and an escape tunnel, each 8.64 km in length, are proposed to run
parallel to each other on the left side of NH-47, crossing NH-47 at chainage 65+720 km. The
starting and ending chainages of tunnel (T-2) are 57+400 km and 66+040 km respectively. A
construction adit tunnel has also proposed which intersects the main tunnel and escape
tunnel at chainage 60+000 km. The topographical survey is not available along the
construction adit.
4.3.2.1 Tunnel 2 Portal (P1)
Portal 1 of Tunnel T2 is located near Kamlapur village. This area is part of the Rewa-Panna
Plateau and contains deposits of basaltic rocks. The portal -1 is covered with soil which is
fertile soil (black soil) and agricultural land. The topography is non-uniform with a plateau
terrain at the proposed portal location.
The portal area has been explored through exploratory drilling (T2-BHM-01). The bedrock
was encountered at 1.5m depth. The bedrock is highly weathered, fine-grained, brown-
colored, amygdaloidal basalt. This basalt contains numerous secondary minerals such as
quartz and calcite and a high amount of clay, indicating a history of weathering. A highly
fractured rock mass was observed from 1.5m to 3.5m depth and from 9.5m to 11.5m. The
36

Core recovery range varies from 19% to 96%, and RQD ranges from nil to 96% indicating poor
to very good rock mass.
The proposed Portal 1 of Tunnel T2 is shown in Figure 4-4.
The proposed Portal 2 of Tunnel T2 is located at chainage 66+040 km, part of the Rewa-
Panna Plateau. The portal location is covered with an overburden composed of boulders and
gravels of basalt rocks mixed with black soil. No unstable zones have been observed near
the portal area.
The portal area and their cut slopes were explored through exploratory drilling. The bore
holesT2-BH-118, T2-BH-119 and T2-BH-120 were drilled. The bed rock depth varies from 2m
to 2.5m.
The rock mass is moderately to highly weathered, light grey to brown in color, fine-grained
vesicular basalt. The vesicles are filled with white-colored quartz. The core recovery ranges
from 34% to 93%, and RQD ranges from nil to 81%, indicating variable rock quality with
significant weathering and the presence of vesicular structures filled with secondary
minerals.
The proposed Portal 2 of Tunnel T2 is shown in Figure 4-5.
37
Detailed Design Consultancy for Tunnel and Viaduct including Geotechnical Investigation in connection with Construction of

Railway in Madhya Pradesh State, India.
The surface area of the tunnel is covered with an overburden consisting of cobble of basalt
rock mixed with silty and black soil.
The minimum and maximum rock cover above the tunnel is 3.3m and 155m, respectively
the lateral and vertical cover along the tunnel is sufficient. Several nallas and depressions
pass through the alignment. In-situ rock outcrops of fine-grained basalt are observed along
the alignment and vicinity of tunnel.
A geological long section has been prepared along the tunnel based on surface geological
mapping and exploratory drilling. The entire tunnel length has been well investigated
through geological mapping and exploratory drilling (T-2 BHM 1 to T-2 BH 120). The thickness
of the overburden varies from 0 to 18m. Core recovery ranges from 13% to 98%, while RQD
ranges from nil to 94%, indicating that the rock is generally quite strong except where
weathering is present.
The entire length of the tunnel passes through the basalt of the Rewa-Panna region of the
Deccan Plateau. However, at the midpoint of the alignment, a layer of red bole is found
sandwiched between the basalts. The anticipated groundwater condition varies from dry to
dripping, with flowing conditions expected at a few locations, especially at nalla crossings
and lithological contacts or sheared rock masses.
Based on the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) classification, the anticipated rock mass classification
along the tunnel, projected from outcrops in the vicinity and drill hole data, using RMR
classification is Class II - 41%, Class III - 33%, Class IV - 15%, and Class V - 11%. The anticipated
percentages of rock classes likely to be encountered during tunnelling have been given only
for estimation purposes with potential problematic zones. The variation in chainages and
rock class percentages can be expected.
From chainage 57400m to 58100m (700m), 65630 to 65730 and 65900 to 66040m, the ground
cover varies from 3.3m to 10.20m. Based on the drill holes data, The overburden thickness
38

varies from 1.5m to 3m depth. The actual rock cover is less than the ground cover above
the tunnel crown.
The rock mass is slightly weathered to fresh, medium strong to strong and medium grained
basalt as per boreholes. Based on geological logs of drill holes, the core recovery and RQD
indicates rock mass is fair to good in condition. However, due to tunnelling being done in
shallow overburden, special considerations need to be made during tunneling. Suitable
construction measures such as mechanical excavation, road header, controlled blasting,
pre-splitting, pre support such as forepoling/ piperoofing etc may need to be deployed as
per rock mass characteristics and overall ground behavior. Therefore, the rock class has
been considered as lower rock class for the planning of construction methodology and
estimation purposes. The anticipated rock class may vary during construction. The special
rock support system may be designed accordingly during detailed design for such cases
wherein ground cover above the tunnel excavation line is less than 1 times the equivalent
diameter of the excavated tunnel. In such cases, the excavation payment shall be made
considering lower rock class/ ground mass behavior (Item A1.4 of the BOQ) to mitigate the
suitable construction measures to be deployed in these zones. The support system payment
shall be made as per approved drawings and relevant contract conditions.
The behavior of the rock around the excavation will depend on characteristics of rock mass
types taking the ground water conditions, stress conditions and main discontinuities (lava
flow) related to tunnel axis into account. Stress controlled and squeezing behavior are
expected to occur when increased rock cover / or weak rock formations / area are
encountered.

6 Design Consideration
6.1 Basis of Tunnel Design
The following geotechnical evaluations are performed:
• Determining the rock mass classes based on RMR and ONORM 2203 systems.
• Defining empirical support requirements according to the above rock classification
systems.
For the design of the primary support in the tunnel excavations:
• Tunnel grounds are grouped with respect to the rock mass classes.
• Utilizing Finite Element analysis (FEM) to determine the stress concentrations and
deformations around the excavated tunnels for each tunnel section.
43
Detailed Design Consultancy for Tunnel and Viaduct including Geotechnical Investigation in connection with Construction of
electrified new BG railway line between Mangliya Gaon (Indore) to Budni stations (198 KMs) of West Central Railway and Western
Railway in Madhya Pradesh State, India.
• Checking validity of the empirical primary tunnel support requirements obtained
through RMR.
• Empirical primary tunnel support will be used if the tunnel is stable whereas they
will be reconsidered if the tunnel excavation is found to be unstable.
6.2 Rock Mass Classification
Rock mass classification will be conducted based on RMR (Rock Mass Rating) and ÖNORM
2203 (Austrian Code) at the portal areas and along the tunnel alignment.
While RMR provides quantitative values representing each rock mass, ÖNORM 2203 provides
qualitative assessment of the rock mass based on the behavior. Empirical tunnel support
types and categories are determined and analyzed prior to finalization of the primary
support required for the tunnel.
6.2.1 Geo-Mechanical Classification (RMR)
Bieniawski (1979) published the details of a rock mass classification called the
Geomechanics Classification or the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system. Over the years, this
system has been successively refined as more case records have been examined. The
following six parameters are used to classify a rock mass using the RMR system:
Class I II III IV V

With calculated value of RMR, some set of support suitable for the lithological unit are
suggested by Bieniawski, this support can be selected from the chart given below and can
be used as a preliminary idea to start validation of the actual support requirements with
the help of other analytical and numerical methods.

6.2.2 Austrian Code (ONORM 2203)
The Austrian Code (ÖN 2203) features a qualitative ground classification system that must
be considered within the overall context of the NATM. In essence, the NATM is an approach
or philosophy integrating the principles of the behavior of rock masses under load and
monitoring the performance of underground excavations during construction. The NATM
involves a combination of many established ways of excavation and tunneling, but the
difference is the continual monitoring of the rock movement and the revision of support to
obtain the most stable and economical lining.

electrified new BG railway line between Mangliya Gaon (Indore) to Budni stations (198 KMs) of West Central Railway and Western
Railway in Madhya Pradesh State, India.
According to ÖN 2203 Classification, rock masses are divided into 3 main types which are A,
B and C:
• A (Stable to over breaking) Stresses acting on rock mass do not cause major failures.
• B (Friable) Disintegration due to structural weakness and/or lack of interlocking.
• C (Squeezing) Strength of rock mass is exceeded to great depth; this type also
includes rock bursts and swelling rock.
The main rock types defined in this section are subdivided into various rock classes the
descriptions and rock mass behavior of which are given in table 6-3.

6.3.2 Rock Mass Type 2 (RMT-2)
The Red bole rock mass is available within Tunnel-2 at greater depths. The Red bole is very
fine grained, completely to highly weathered, laminated and very poor to weak and fragile
in nature.
6.3.3 Rock Mass Type 3 (RMT-3)
The Slope wash material available on the surface of tunnel’s alignment and portal-2 of both
tunnels. The slope wash material generally consists of angular to sub angular cobbles and
boulders of basalt embedded in a clay matrix.
6.3.4 Rock Mass Type 4 (RMT-4)
The Black soil is composed of the weathering process of igneous basalt rocks of the Deccan
trap. It covers the portal-1 of Tunnel-1 and Tunnel-2 as well as the agricultural part of the
alignment.
6.4 Rock Support Requirements
The rock units forming the geological profile are evaluated based on rock mass rating (RMR)
and ONORM 2203 system for the determination of rock mass classification and tunnel support
requirements.
Based on the ranges of RMR values for the different criteria, the rock mass is described as:
Good, Fair, Poor and Very Poor. For different RMR ranges, support systems have been
defined which shall be applied accordingly.

gathered from this work allows confirming the rock classes predicted in the design stage
and modifying the primary support if adverse ground conditions are encountered.
6.6 Final Lining
A cast in-situ concrete lining will be designed for long term effects during the design stage.
6.7 Instrumentation
In the tunnel excavations performed by means of drill and blasts methods, the round lengths
are closely related to stand-up time, unsupported span, and placement of the support on
time. The NATM requires the installation of advanced instrumentation to monitor the
deformations of the excavation and buildup of the load in the support. This information on
tunnel stability and permits optimization of the round lengths (heading/bench) and support
components.
The different soil and rock types have been described in section 4 and 5. This present section
summarizes the rock mass, laboratory test data and rock mass properties for baseline
purpose.
7.1 Rock Mass Rating
The rock mass has been classified based on several criteria including rock strength and
quality, the general character of rock discontinuities, and the anticipated groundwater
conditions. Based on RMR classification, the rock class and RMR values are given in Table 7-
1. The baseline is that the chainage of rock class varies during construction stage.

indicates rock mass is fair to good in condition.
The summary of ground cover for two tunnels- T-1 and T-2, is given in the table 7-5 below:
TABLE 7-5 GROUND COVER ALONG THE TUNNELS
The geotechnical risks and potential hazards that may be encountered in the tunnel are as
follows:
• Risk of facing unforeseen geological conditions at portal areas and tunnel alignment
which will cause stability problems in tunnel excavation. Assessment of the actual
geological conditions and monitoring of ground deformations, mitigation measures
like probing, additional support, grouting, drainage etc. shall be taken.
• The risk of water ingress will affect the stability and tunnel excavation rates. The
risk is higher particularly in the fault zones. Horizontal probe drilling shall be
performed to investigate groundwater and rock conditions ahead of the tunnel face.
Suitable mitigation measures (grouting, drainage etc.) shall be taken if the results
of investigations indicate high risk.
• Risk of face instability due to complex nature of the tunnel ground, orientation of
discontinuities and tectonically disturbed zones (thrust, faults, shear zones), ground
water, higher overburden. Assessment of the actual geological conditions and
monitoring of ground deformations, mitigation measures like additional support,
probing, grouting, drainage etc. shall be taken.
• Risk of interruption of the excavation process for holiday breaks and/or weekends.
This allows time-dependent stress re-distribution. For this reason, strengthening of

the initial support near the face shall be required, if the face is to be left unattended
for a long time.
• Risk of chimney formations in the low cover zones along the tunnels. Proper pre-
support of tunnel crown using presplitting, pipe roofing and tunnel face using face
support such as face bolts/shotcrete.
