Submission Format

Section 1

The submission is in the form of two individual written reports or you can make a
single report segmenting it by using section breaks so that it is clear that which
activity ends where. Reports should be written in a concise, formal business style
using single spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings,
paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work must be supported with
research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide
a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit
is provided against each activity however you will not be penalized for exceeding
the total word limit.

Section 2

The submission is in the form of an individual evidence portfolio. This assignment is

an individual assignment and you must produce you own portfolio, which will
contain:

• A LAN design plan and blueprint and justification document.

• A fully completed test plan including an evaluation of results and

recommendations for improvements to LAN.

• A proposed and justified maintenance/test schedule duly filled after testing.

• Evidence of an implemented network. Observation Sheet duly filled by the

Observer.

• Packet Tracer Project File

You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs, subsections and illustrations
as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and referenced using
the Harvard referencing system.

You are required to submit your work for plagiarism checking. No work will be
considered if it contains plagiarism more than the acceptable level defined as per
TMUC’s plagiarism policy.

LO2 Explain networking devices and operations.
LO3 Design efficient networked systems
LO4 Implement and diagnose networked systems

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Section 1
Netlogics is an American telecommunications company that provides voice, video
data and internet telecommunications and professional services to businesses,
consumers and government agencies. You have joined Netlogics through TMUC
CDC as an Intern where you attended training session for onboarding event. Your
supervisor has assigned you prepare a report for the two evaluation activities.
These activities are intended to evaluate your understanding and knowledge base
regarding the Data Networks.

Part 1

You are required to develop a formal report of approx. 2000 ~ 2500 words. Your
report should focus on the following:-
 Define, explain & differentiate OSI and TCP/IP models.
 How do you define IP addressing and subnetting with examples? If a class B
network on the Internet has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0, what is the
maximum number of hosts per subnet?
 Define with an example, Network Address Translation and Port Address
translation with an example.
 Define hubs, switches, routers, firewalls, IDS/IPS, and their role in
implementing Data Networks.
 Logical and Physical Network Topologies, their Principles and impacts

Part 2

“A new startup has approached your company for the design

and implementation of data network in their site office”.

The details of premises are as follows:

 The Building has a covered area of 3000 sq. ft with three floors.
 Ground floor has a reception area alongside waiting lobby with a
desk for the receptionist and sitting space for visitors. Four rooms
having space for four desks in each room, One room for the
manager office. One room for the IT and Support having two desks.
 On first floor, there are three executive rooms.
 On the second floor one meeting area with four corporate desks.

The IT related details are as follows:

 Company has its own client server application that needs to be
deployed on a dedicated server in a local environment.
 All workstations within the premises will have the front-end
application installed that will be connected to the server all time.

 System is also available online and can only be accessed through a
VPN.
 Proper authentication both at local and remote ends is required
before any user can access the server resource
 Mostly workstations deployed in the premises are standard desktop
workstations but executives have their laptops and need mobility
across the premises.

In view of this scenario, you are required to develop your response in more of a
proposal format and ensure that what all you propose, comes with a formal
justification of your choice. Your response should base the requirements specified
in the above scenario.

Section 2
You are employed as a Network Engineer at Netlogics and are working on a project
for an educational institute who have recently constructed their new campus
building in Islamabad which will accommodate their 10 sections + a management
block. You will need to analyse the technical requirements based on the information
provided below for completion of this project within a given timeframe:

Users: 100 (Management: 10, Teachers: 20, Students: 70.

Resources: 10 laptops, 30 Workstations, 5 network printers,1 dedicated printer , 2
servers.

Building: 2 floors, where management is on Ground Floor; along with 5 offices for
Faculty and 5 classrooms; Top Management office, 10 classrooms and and 5 offices
for Faculty

 All offices have their assigned workstations and access to networked printers.
Top management has 1 dedicated printer.
 Beside these, all uses have their smart phone devices connected to the
internet using dedicated Wireless network which is not connected with the
internal network.
 Top management has separate internet connectivity comprising of both wired
and wireless connectivity.
 Rest of the computers are connected via ethernet

Part 1 Design efficient networked systems

1. Design a network using any drafting tool and/or you may use Network
Simulation software (i.e. Packet Tracer)
2. Design a maintenance plan that would include the desired and expected
outcomes from the designed network.
3. Cover every aspect, which you feel completes the design of the network.
4. You may get the design consulted with your peer-group and evaluate their
observations for improving your design.

Part 2 Implement test and diagnose networked systems

1. Implement your design using CISCO Packet Tracer
2. Demonstrate the implementation and testing of the system to the panel
