INTRODUCTION
English language was brought to the subcontinent in the times of British rule and after the
establishment of Pakistan it gained the status of an official language. The demand of English
language accelerated in a very short period as it developed an individual significance in both
education and conversational system. Currently it is used widely in a variety of distinct
environments because of its global importance and economic opportunities but remains to be
detached from the other regional languages. Also, the international outlook of the variety spoken
is used as the most important factor while identifying the status of the language. The Pakistani
English can be defined as a group of various English language types spoken and written in
Pakistan by different groups of people. Moreover, the influence of local languages and the
vocabulary adopted from Urdu makes the Pakistani version of English distinct from the original
one.
Statement of Problem
Ever since the British rule in Indo-Pak subcontinent, English language has gained political and
social status. The partition resulted in “nativization” of English and now Pakistani English can be
considered a distinct variety but even then, it is profoundly dependent on British English even
the variation is explored with reference to British English. However, this progression is not as
smooth as it may seem. The main dilemma we deal with today is the stalling acceptance and
normalization of Pakistani English. As Kachru (1981) stated, American English is “an example
of linguistic pride and what may be termed a conscious effort toward establishing language
identity”, so the question arises is the Pakistani English given the same value. Since English is
considered as a status symbol, the original English is considered “elite” and complexes are
created within society thus, a Pakistani version of English with Urdu borrowings and features is
considered inferior.
Significance of Study
This study’s findings fill in the literary gap of why the local version of English (Pakistani
English) is still not openly accepted and appreciated. The observations of this paper show the
socio-cultural influences and other factors which go on to create this complex in our society.
Moreover, this paper exposes the trends today which are helping and playing their role in
celebrating and incorporating Pakistani English in our day-to-day lives.
Scope
The audience for this study is academic students falling in the age bracket of (18-24) years and
the purpose of it is for classroom discussion and final project. The scope is to discuss the issue of
acceptance and normalization of Pakistani English in our society even after 74 years of its origin.
(Since independence from British rule)
LITERATURE REVIEW
In understanding the Pakistani English and its current conversational trends in society various
articles state how people use a blend of Urdu and English in informal settings, however in terms
of formal and legal communication English language is vastly dominate (Aamna Khalid, 2016).
She also discussed how English was being used as the necessary symbol for progress and
modernization in various classes, looking in detail how individual use their language with
family, and friends, or at formal setting like offices. Though, the study is more based upon the
learning aspects and motivation towards English language, it ignores the change in language in
the social environment also the influence of western media.
