What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of

computer science dedicated to developing intelligent agents that can
execute tasks usually needing human-like intelligence. These activities
encompass problem-solving, voice recognition, and making decisions, among
various others. AI is a multidisciplinary field with numerous methodologies; it
can be rule-based, functioning within a specified framework or conditions, or
it can utilize machine learning algorithms to adjust to its surroundings. The
latter is especially potent, as it enables AI systems to learn from data,
enhancing their adaptability and ability to manage unexpected situations.

Common misunderstandings

It’s important to clarify what AI is not. There are numerous misconceptions

surrounding artificial intelligence, and here are some prevalent false beliefs:

AI is the same as robots. AI extends beyond robotics; it encompasses a wider

range of technologies, including search algorithms and natural language
processing.

AI will soon exceed human intelligence. The notion that AI will quickly
outsmart humans is overstated; Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) remains
a theoretical concept and is far from being achieved.

AI comprehends content like humans. AI does not "understand" text or

speech in the same way humans do; it analyzes data based on patterns but
lacks true comprehension.

AI is free from bias. Contrary to popular belief, AI can adopt biases from its
training data or its creators, indicating that it is not inherently unbiased.
Refer to our guide on the ethics of generative AI for further insights.

AI can take over all human jobs. Although AI can automate certain tasks, it cannot replace roles
that necessitate emotional intelligence, creativity, and other uniquely human abilities.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

AI can be categorized based on its capabilities and functionalities.

When it comes to capabilities, we can distinguish between between types of AI in the

following ways:
Narrow AI
Also known as Weak AI, narrow AI is designed and trained to perform a specific task. It
operates under a limited pre-defined set of conditions and doesn't possess the broad
range of capabilities that humans have. Most current AI systems, including reactive
machines and limited memory machines (see below), fall under this category.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Also known as General AI, this type of AI would have the ability to understand, learn,
and apply knowledge across different domains. It would be capable of self-awareness,
reasoning, and emotional understanding. General AI remains largely theoretical at this
point.

Artificial Super Intelligence

This is an advanced form of AI that would surpass human intelligence in nearly all
aspects, from creativity and social intelligence to problem-solving abilities. Super AI is a
concept that exists more in the realm of science fiction and future speculation than in
current reality.

We can also explore the types of artificial intelligence based on its functionality:

Reactive machines
These are the most basic forms of AI, designed to perform specific tasks. For example,
IBM's Deep Blue, a chess-playing supercomputer, falls under this category. Reactive
machines cannot store memories or use past experiences to inform current decisions.

Limited memory
Limited Memory AI can store past data and use it to make better predictions or
decisions. This type of AI is commonly found in recommendation systems like those
used by Netflix or Amazon.

Theory of mind
This is a theoretical concept that refers to AI systems potentially understanding human
emotions, beliefs, and thoughts. While intriguing, we have yet to achieve this level of AI
sophistication.

Self-awareness
The pinnacle of AI development would be self-aware machines that understand their
existence and can make decisions based on self-interest. This remains a subject of
ongoing research and ethical debate.
Applications and Illustrations of AI

The influence of AI stretches well beyond academia and niche sectors. Here
are several ways in which artificial intelligence is utilized in the modern
world:

Daily technology

AI is intricately woven into the technologies we engage with on a daily basis.

From Google Maps adjusting your route according to live traffic updates to
Siri and Alexa managing your reminders and responding to your inquiries, AI
is almost everywhere. These applications frequently employ Narrow AI to
carry out specific tasks effectively.

Commerce and industry

The corporate landscape is increasingly adopting AI, with an IBM survey

indicating that over one-third of organizations (35%) reported utilizing AI in
their operations in 2022. Businesses across various fields are discovering
applications for artificial intelligence, including:

Healthcare. AI algorithms can evaluate medical images to detect early

indicators of conditions like cancer. They can also aid in drug development
by forecasting how various compounds might treat illnesses.

Finance. Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in fraud detection, where

machine learning algorithms scrutinize transaction patterns to identify
suspicious activities. It also contributes to algorithmic trading, portfolio
optimization, and customizing banking experiences.

Retail. Features like recommendation systems on e-commerce sites are often

driven by AI, enabling businesses to enhance upselling and cross-selling
strategies. It can also support inventory oversight and demand prediction.

Large Language Models such as ChatGPT are transforming how we interact

with software. Be it customer support, project coordination, or data
evaluation, these AI tools are boosting efficiency, precision, and productivity
across all industries.

Gaming and entertainment

As discussed in our piece on creativity and generative AI, a new realm of art
is being facilitated by artificial intelligence. Here are some current
applications:

Video games. Algorithms govern non-player characters (NPCs), enhancing

their responsiveness and realism. Advanced AI can even adjust to the
gameplay styles of individual players to modify the game’s difficulty.

Music and film. AI powers content suggestions on platforms like Spotify and
Netflix, and it can even play a role in the creative process, such as
composing music or assisting in film editing.

Public services and infrastructure

Government agencies and similar organizations are increasingly deploying

artificial intelligence for a variety of tasks:

Traffic management. AI algorithms can evaluate traffic information in real-

time to optimize signal timings, thereby reducing congestion and enhancing
road safety.

Emergency response. Fields such as predicting natural disasters and

coordinating responses can leverage artificial intelligence, including
forecasting hurricanes and optimizing evacuation routes.
