A Journey of Care: Designing a Cancer Center and Hospice Facility in Pala

Taniya Sara Philip

CAT20AR120 AS502 Architectural Thesis | C.A.T | 2025
Introduction

A cancer care centre and hospice facility that is holistic in terms of treatment and providing palliative
care, which focusses on healing and improving the mental state of patients through Therapeutic
architecture, use of sensory gardens, outdoors and biophilic design.
Kerala has seen a steady increase in cancer cases due to lifestyle changes, aging population, and
better diagnostic capabilities. Pala, being a central hub in Kottayam district, is geographically well-
placed to cater to surrounding towns and villages where access to specialized oncology care is
limited.
While the existing cancer care center in Pala may provide diagnostic and treatment facilities, there
is likely a lack of dedicated hospice and palliative care services. Pala is a well-connected town,
serving as a gateway for several rural areas and smaller towns in the vicinity. The establishment of
such a facility would reduce the burden on patients who currently need to travel to far-off cities like
Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram for treatment.

Aim
An advanced cancer treatment and palliative care with a focus on holistic healing, patient dignity,
and community support. The project aspires to create an environment that prioritizes patient
comfort, emotional well-being, and sustainable architectural practices while addressing the specific
needs of individuals battling cancer.

Objective
To design a patient-centered Cancer Care and Hospice Facility that combines state-of-the-art
medical infrastructure, emotional and spiritual support, and sustainable design practices.

Designing a Multi-Modal Transit Hub in Akkulam, Thiruvananthapuram: Integrating Sustainable Urban

Mobility and Tourism Infrastructure

Taniya Sara Philip

CAT20AR120 AS502 Architectural Thesis | C.A.T | 2025
Introduction

• Thiruvananthapuram is experiencing rapid urban expansion, resulting in increased traffic

congestion and pressure on existing transport systems. A multi-modal transit hub in Akkulam
would alleviate congestion by integrating different transportation modes, such as buses, rail, and
potentially water transport, into a seamless system.
• Akkulam is near prominent tourist destinations like Akkulam Tourist Village and Veli Tourist
Village, making it an ideal location for a transit hub that caters to tourists.
• An integrated transit center could improve accessibility to these areas, promoting tourism while
also helping manage visitor flow. Establishing a transit hub would not only improve connectivity
but also stimulate economic growth in Akkulam and nearby areas.

AS502 Architectural Thesis | C.A.T | 2025

Aim
Fostering seamless urban mobility while promoting sustainable transportation systems and
leveraging Akkulam's potential as a tourism and cultural destination. The project seeks to establish
an efficient transit ecosystem that serves as a gateway for local and regional travel while enhancing
the urban fabric and supporting eco-tourism initiatives in the region.

Objective
To integrate diverse modes of transportation, enhances connectivity, and fosters sustainable urban
mobility while supporting the region’s eco-tourism and cultural heritage. This project seeks to
balance functionality, sustainability, and cultural relevance, addressing the current and future needs
of both residents and visitors while creating a transit-oriented landmark in Akkulam.

From Coir to Consumer: An Integrated Coir Factory and Retail Concept for Alappuzha’s Eco-Tourism

Taniya Sara Philip

CAT20AR120 AS502 Architectural Thesis | C.A.T | 2025
Introduction

• The establishment of an Integrated Coir Factory and Retail Concept in Alappuzha, specifically
designed for eco-tourism, is a unique and impactful project.
• The coir industry, with its roots deeply embedded in the cultural and economic fabric of
Alappuzha, offers a significant opportunity to develop a sustainable business model that
connects local production to consumer markets while promoting eco-tourism.
• By integrating the coir manufacturing process with a retail experience, the project would add
value at every stage of production, from raw material processing to finished product sales.
• This would allow local artisans and workers to benefit from higher-value goods, rather than just
selling raw coir fibers at low prices.

AS502 Architectural Thesis | C.A.T | 2025

Aim
The aim is to create a multi-functional coir facility that serves as:
1. A modern coir production hub, utilizing sustainable practices.
2. A retail and experiential space, showcasing coir products and providing educational tours.
3. An eco-tourism attraction, promoting local culture and sustainability.

Objective
• To support the traditional coir industry in Alappuzha by modernizing production methods and
creating new market opportunities.
• To integrate the coir industry into Alappuzha’s eco-tourism offerings by providing guided tours,
workshops, and cultural exhibitions.
