CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Social media has woven itself into the fabric of modern society, transforming how
we interact, consume information and perceive the world around us. In the educational
sphere, these ubiquitous presence extends beyond more entertainment; it’s profoundly
impacts student’s well-being and academic performance. A 2021 study by the few

from mental health implications to study habits and academic outcomes. Social media
platforms are integral to the daily lives of students, influencing their communication, self-
perception, and mental health. Qualitative studies reveal a duality in social media’s
effects; while it can foster social connections and provide support, it also contributes to
anxiety, stress and feelings of isolation, for instance, research indicates that social media
can exacerbate anxiety through social comparison and fear of missing out (FOMO)
positive and negative emotions from social media interactions, some report that social
media serve as a vital support system, enhancing feeling of belonging, while others cite
detrimental effects on their mental health, such as increased stress and depressive
symptoms.
The ubiquitous presence of social media has profoundly impacted the lives of students
raising concerns about its potential effects on their well-being and academic performance.
This statement of the problem aims to explore the multifaceted nature of this issue,
1. What are the effects of social media on student’s mental and physical health?
3. How social media affects the mental and physical health of the students?
2
This study assumes that social media usage significantly influences both the well-
being and academic performance of students. It shows that while social media can
provide social support and opportunities for engagement, excessive use may lead to
negative effects such as increase anxiety, distraction and decreased academic focus.
Furthermore, it is expected that the relationship between social media use and students’
well-being varies based on factors such as age, type of platforms used, and individual
coping mechanism. Overall, the study aims to explore these dynamics to better

Definition of Terms
The effect of social media on student well being and academic performance
refers to the influence that social media platforms have on the overall health and
academic success of students. This can be include both positive and negative impact such
as:
Positive aspect:
Social Connection. Social media can provide opportunities for students to connect with
friend, family and peers, fostering a sense of belonging and social support.
Information access. Students can use social media to access educational resources,
Self-Expression. Social platforms can provide a space for students to express themselves
Negative Effects:
Cyber bullying. Student may experience cyberbullying, harassment or online abuse
Sleep Disturbances. Excessive use of Social media, especially before bed can disrupt
Mental Health Issues. Social media can contribute to feelings of loneliness. Anxiety.
Depression and low self esteem particularly if students are exposed to negative contents
or online comparisons.
It’s important to note that the effect of social media on student well-being and academic
performance can vary depending on individual factors, such as age, gender and cultural
backgrounds. Additionally, the way social media is used can also influence its impacts.
5
This study aims to determine the impact of social media on students. The research
It will be carried out within the school. This study considered every aspect of the
student’s personal information that has an impact in their academic performance such as
the educational background of their parents, their gender, age and address. In addition, it
focuses on how to avoid the effects of social media well-being and academic
performance of students. To achieve this goal, the researcher will conduct survey of
students in Barcelona Comprehensive High School. The results of this research are
analyzed through descriptive static analysis. The findings of this study will help
researchers to understand how social media influences to students and this study focuses
on current senior high school students in the school year 2024 – 2025.

Student
Most of the students nowadays use social media it gives a lot of benefits for the
students like enhance their learning because of social media students can access to the
information that they want making it a lot easier for their study and communication it can
help the interact with other people from a long distance making their communication
skills improved.
Parents
Most of the student today have a cellphone and most of them love to interact in
social media because of this most of the student learn an lot just by interacting in social
media making it a lot easier for parents to instruct them and the social media can also
help the parents communicate to their children by a long distance making them not to
worry for their children because of this they can now focus on their work.
Teachers
Through the social media it is now easier of the teacher to teach their students
about their lesson by making them research on it in social media making it a lot easier
for the students to understand it also help the teacher teach them just like module by
giving the students some task just by chatting it in the social media and sending the some
reviewers to understand it better and the whole school and he/she can just post it like
there’s no school and events because of this the students are aware of what’s happening
in the school.
School
Social media have a lot of benefit for school social media have communication
and information to access it help the students enhance their learning by getting the
information that they need for school academic and it is also help their communication
skill improve by making a lot of contact to other people in social media like their teacher
they can ask their teachers if they don’t understand something from the lesson.

tool that helps them get a large audience. Social media is a growing trend that is
spreading around the globe. There are millions of people who are using social media
every day. They spend more time and attention on Facebook than other channels and

companies and institutions but also provides a tool that allows users who sign up for free

users log into their profile, they feel like friends and there is a certain level of trust.

platforms is not only used for social networking but is also a great way of digitally
advertising your brand and your products. With the huge number of social media users, it
is crucial to note how users behave and how they decide what to buy online.
The primary motives for using social networks for them are the search for friends,
classmates and communication with them. The time spent on informal organizations
enables most respondents to compose their own particular relaxation time, and in
addition get ready for exams. Most students spend around 20% of their time using social
media. Almost half of those surveyed admit that using the social network helped them in
their personal lives and communicating with friends, organizing leisure and in search of
interest groups, some argue that social networks did not affect their way of life in any
way, and only a few acknowledged that social networks had influenced on their free time,
10% caused addiction. Summing up, it should be noted that social networks, becoming an
integral part of the students’ full life, took up most of their free time. Having superseded
the methods for correspondence, they replaced the understudies' leisure activities and
verbal correspondence. The informal organization, and not the course book and the
instructor, moved toward becoming for them the main colleague in anticipation of exams.
Often the student does not have time to absorb the information received in the lessons.
After all, in the phone or tablet screen, there are things much more interesting
correspondence with peers, news tapes, all kinds of social networks, and, of course,
YouTube videos. Also, all the free time a student can spend on the Internet. Instead of
doing sports, reading a book, chatting with their peers "live," preparing for lessons or just
walking, he will spend time on social networks. Of course, this negatively affects their
physical and intellectual development. Undoubtedly, in social networks, there are also
things useful for the development of the student - a lot of educational groups on
Facebook and educational videos from YouTube. In addition, communication with peers
through social networks can help a student socialize, find new friends, discuss with them
issues related to studies. In addition, in social networks, a child can relax for a while and

The researcher is analyzing the impact of social media on the student’s academic
students.
There are published research studies where the impact of social media was studied
on student’s academic performance by taking their personality traits, education level and
gender all three together into consideration. So, in the present study, the impact of social
traits (extraversion and introversion), education level (undergraduate and post graduate)
also are admitted to the limitation on gathering data from our participants. We also
consider the sampling biases as participants may not represent the larger student
population. Also, the researchers face time constraints, limited time for data collection
and analysis. This study also faces survey fatigue, as the participants may not provide
thoughtful responses.
