ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of social media on students

well-being and academic performance in Barcelona National Comprehensive High

School. Research questions and research hypothesis guided the study. To achieve this,

the descriptive survey research design was done.

The study focused on BNCHS hence, population consist of Grade 10 Junior High

School Students, Grade 11 and Grade 12 Senior High School Student. The simple

random sampling techniques was used to select a sample of 300 students. Survey

questionnaires were used to collect data from the participants. The descriptive statistics of

frequency counts and percentages were used to analyze the demographic while data

statistic was used in testing the research hypothesis.

Research finding showed that a greeter number of students in BNCHS are slightly

Addicted to social media. To this end, the researcher recommend that social media should

be used for educational purpose and limit the time for using social media as well as,

social networking sites should be expounded and new pages should be created to enhance

academic activities and avoid setbacks in the student’s academic performance; and

student should be monitored by teacher and parents on how they use the platforms. This

is to create a balance between social media and academic activities of students and reduce

the negative effect to the well-being of the students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The effect of Social Media on Students Academic Performance and Well-Being.

This chapter presents related literature, journals, studies, and theories on topics relevant

to the current study. The literature that was included in this chapter will help in

familiarizing every information that is significant and similar to the present study.

Review of Related Literature

Social media has been linked to mental health problem such online abuse can

severely impact self-esteem, at times leading to Anxiety and depression, sleep disruptions

excessive now on social media, especially before bedtime can disrupt s in the sleep

patterns among students. Inadequate sleep can lead to increased stress and a decline in

overall mental health. Social media has a distinct changes in the developing brain,

potentially affecting such function as emotional learning and behavior, impulse control

and emotional regulation. According to the studies of (Kathy Katella June 17, 2014)

Some researches thick that exposure to social media can overstimulates the brains reward

center and when the stimulation becomes excessive can trigger pathways comparable to
addiction. Evasive use has also been linked to sleep problems, abruption problems and

feelings or exclusion in adolescent. Social media use may increase feelings of anxiety and

depression, specifically in teens and young adults.

The impact of social media on student well-being and academic performance has

garner significant attention in recent research. This review aims to synthesize findings

from various studies to understand how social media effects the students’ performance.

According to Aguilar, J; Anaya, J; Tizon, J. (2019) Social media platforms allow

people to transform the communication and interaction of one another. This platform of

information helps the world build networks and online communities. Since there is an

increase in the number of the prolific users of these social media platforms worldwide,

modern businesses see these as an innovative marketing communication tool to easily

attract the online market. Marketing serves as an important strategy in ensuring the

growth of businesses. Strategies such as social media posts and email campaigns can not

only engage existing consumers but spread the word to new potential customers.

Facebook advertising was also considered the most targeted kind of advertising, it can

help businesses to reach an exact audience, it's easy to advertise to people by age,

interests, behavior, and location on Facebook. Advertising in Facebook was considered

fastest and most efficient, it can drive immediate results. Businesses can start reaching

thousands of people daily. Facebook might be a fast way to drive traffic and conversions

wherein Facebook advertising could be a best solution.

10

Online Content Scheme and Advantages

Malek, Ibrahim, Hassan, & Adnan (2021) stated in their study of A Systematic

Literature Review on Key Elements of Branding through Facebook that ubiquity,

visibility, functions, and emotional bonds with customers are all promoted by branding. It

can be conveyed through a multitude of mediums. The visual and textual components of

Facebook can be used to communicate branding. Brands are increasingly dependent on

social media, which includes online platforms for sharing and participating in a range of

activities, to interact with targeted audiences. Social media helps people connect with one

another, provides rapid feedback or support, and promotes businesses, products, and

services. For online businesses, it is swiftly becoming an important aspect of their client

outreach strategy. Facebook has grown into massive hypertextual complexes with a

wealth of written and visual content, making it a valuable data source in recent years. As

a result, through visual and linguistic analysis, Facebook can supply a wealth of

information on how to communicate marketing.

Social Media Platforms

Valand J. & Gaur A. (2020) pointed out that the main aim of marketers is to find a

tool that helps them get a large audience. Social media is a growing trend that is
spreading around the globe. There are millions of people who are using social media

every day. They spend more time and attention on Facebook than other channels and

media. Facebook is not only providing a platform for advertisement and publicity for

companies and institutions but also provides a tool that allows users who sign up for free

profiles to connect online with friends, co-workers, or people they don't know. When

users log into their profile, they feel like friends and there is a certain level of trust.

Companies are strengthening their customer base by creating Facebook pages and fan

groups. Through these communities, word-of-mouth marketing can be shared. Customers

share experiences or give advice to other customers or to the business itself. Marketers

around the globe are now dealing with overloaded information. Using Facebook as a

marketing tool can solve this problem. It allows marketers to connect directly to their

target customers. They can connect the right people in time with the right message by

using user profile information.

SYNTHESIS AND FINDINGS

Social media has become the most influential and important virtual space were the

platforms is not only used for social networking but is also a great way of digitally

advertising your brand and your products. With the huge number of social media users, it

is crucial to note how users behave and how they decide what to buy online.

The primary motives for using social networks for them are the search for friends,

classmates and communication with them. The time spent on informal organizations

enables most respondents to compose their own particular relaxation time, and in

addition get ready for exams. Most students spend around 20% of their time using social

media. Almost half of those surveyed admit that using the social network helped them in

their personal lives and communicating with friends, organizing leisure and in search of

interest groups, some argue that social networks did not affect their way of life in any

way, and only a few acknowledged that social networks had influenced on their free time,

10% caused addiction. Summing up, it should be noted that social networks, becoming an

integral part of the students’ full life, took up most of their free time. Having superseded

the methods for correspondence, they replaced the understudies' leisure activities and

verbal correspondence. The informal organization, and not the course book and the
instructor, moved toward becoming for them the main colleague in anticipation of exams.

Often the student does not have time to absorb the information received in the lessons.

After all, in the phone or tablet screen, there are things much more interesting

correspondence with peers, news tapes, all kinds of social networks, and, of course,

YouTube videos. Also, all the free time a student can spend on the Internet. Instead of

doing sports, reading a book, chatting with their peers "live," preparing for lessons or just

walking, he will spend time on social networks. Of course, this negatively affects their

physical and intellectual development. Undoubtedly, in social networks, there are also

things useful for the development of the student - a lot of educational groups on

Facebook and educational videos from YouTube. In addition, communication with peers

through social networks can help a student socialize, find new friends, discuss with them

issues related to studies. In addition, in social networks, a child can relax for a while and

get distracted from the everyday college routine.

RESEARCH GAP

The researcher is analyzing the impact of social media on the student’s academic

performance, effect of social media on adolescence and addictiveness of social media in

students.

There are published research studies where the impact of social media was studied

on student’s academic performance by taking their personality traits, education level and

gender all three together into consideration. So, in the present study, the impact of social

media will be evaluated on students’ academic performance by taking their personality

traits (extraversion and introversion), education level (undergraduate and post graduate)

and gender (male and female) as moderating variables.

The researchers also consider the limitation on the participants of this study. We

also are admitted to the limitation on gathering data from our participants. We also

consider the sampling biases as participants may not represent the larger student

population. Also, the researchers face time constraints, limited time for data collection

and analysis. This study also faces survey fatigue, as the participants may not provide

thoughtful responses.

26

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

DESCRIPTIVE INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

ANALYSIS OF QUESTIONNAIRES

Of a total of 300 survey questionnaires distributed all 300 completed

questionnaires were base for computing the results. Teens spend an average of 7.5 hours

per day on screens, with social media accounting for nearly a third of that time”

(Common sense Media 2022). So, in the proceeding of answering the survey

questionnaire all of 300 was answered. 172 survey questionnaires completed by grade 10,

92 by grade 11 and 36 by grade 12. A 2021 study by the Pew research center found that
34 88% saying they use it daily (Per Research
nearly all teens (97%) now social media with

Center 2021). So, the study of Pew Research Center was right, cause all of the 300-

survey questionnaire given to the sample size was answered and according to the report

of Common-Sense Media 2022 that teens spend 4-5 hours daily giving a insight that the

well-being and academic performances of student might be affected. The total of 300

survey questionnaire were used to interpret the results. Data gathered through the

questionnaires was subjected to frequency counts.

This analysis is presented in tabular form. The researcher was containing a variable and,

in some cases, using pie graph.

The first section of the survey questionnaire sought to identify the participants

Grade and Section, Age and Gender. It enables the researcher to identify the responses of

participants who took the survey questionnaire and their Grade, Age and Gender. It is the

researcher’s convictions that to obtain reliable result, only the participants who took the

survey questionnaire should be analyzed since most of the question are based on how

many hours they spend on social media per day and what kind of social media platform

they use. The responses to the questions are summarized in the table below of which

some consist of a maximum of 300 response and others depended on the responses gave

in the preceding questions. For example, which social media platform do you use most

frequently? Some participants answer double or triple. This made the total number of

responses for each individual, question different.
