Introduction

A
n altar is a point of connection. An altar is a
structure upon which offerings such as
sacrifices are made for religious purposes. The
altar was a raised platform with a flat surface. In the
Scriptures, there are over 400 references to altars.

The word altar is first used in Genesis when Noah built an

altar after leaving the Ark.

Genesis 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the

LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every
clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

Genesis 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour;

and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the
imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth;

6
neither will I again smite any more every thing
living, as I have done.

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime

and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and
winter, and day and night shall not cease.

The idea of an altar is present in Genesis 4:3-4, where Cain

and Abel brought their sacrifices to the Lord, which was
done most likely on some type of altar.

7
All scripture used in this Module is from the King James
Version of the Bible unless stated otherwise.

I
WHY SHOULD YOU BUILD AN ALTAR

9
WHY SHOULD YOU BUILD AN ALTAR

A
few decades back, I remember when the trend
began of removing altars from the front of the
church. This offended many and outraged
some. While I initially wondered if it was okay to not have
altars situated at the front of a church sanctuary, I later came
to recognize ascetics and methods change.

This idea of no altar in the modern Church probably came

about with the increase of new churches meeting in non-
traditional settings – like movie theaters, shopping centers,
or living rooms. The concept has carried over to large, non-
denominational churches, as well.

Sounds an awful lot like the New Testament Church, minus

the movie theaters and shopping centers.

10
Let me be clear. I am not knocking the use of altars in the
church.

Here’s the simple truth about altars, though. We don’t need

a church building to have an altar. We can build one
wherever we are. Just like Abraham and those of old, we
erect a place of prayer when we sacrifice something of
ourselves. When we chose to say, “I’m laying this down
because I want God more.”

Thanks to the death and resurrection of Jesus – once we’ve

accepted Him as Lord and Savior – we carry the presence of
Almighty God with us in the temple {the altar} of our hearts.

Because of this, my kitchen table becomes an altar when I

spend time in devotion and prayer early in the morning. The
aisle at the market becomes an altar when I see a member of
the church who tells me she recently lost her job – and she
asks me to pray. You establish an altar when you kneel with
your children for bedtime prayers.

Yes, we still come to the altar in our places of worship.

Though we may not find a physical structure resembling the
11
altars of my childhood in every church, most have an area
set aside for prayer. Surely, this will never go out of style
because we need altars in our lives. Here’s why.

We need altars to meet God and encounter His presence.

We need altars for times of confession and commitment.

We need altars as a focal point for bringing our worship {the

sacrifices of our praise} to God.

We need altars as places of prayer and intercession.

We need altars to share the love and goodness of Jesus with

others.

Altars, they are, to a living God.

Being inside the walls of a church is not a requirement for

making an altar. We serve a living God who is always
present always available always willing to hear. So, like the
children of God from long ago, let us not fail to declare.

During King David’s reign, the tabernacle (the movable tent)

that Moses had made was erected at the high place in
12
Gibeon. This tabernacle represented the presence of God
among the people.

At one particular time when David sinned, he needed a more

immediate and convenient altar, so God sent him to a guy
named Ornan and told David to build on Ornan’s threshing
floor.

1 Chronicles 21:26, “And David built there an altar

to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace
offerings, and called on the LORD; and He answered
him from heaven by fire on the altar of burnt
offering.”

Thanks to Jesus, the sacrificial system is out, the need to go

through Levitical priests to get to God is out, and the need to
stand before a particular altar whenever I pray is out.
However, even though all those things are out, the spirit of
each part of David’s worship is still necessary today.

You see, my body is now the temple.

13
1 Corinthians 6:19 says,"Or do you not know that your body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit...?"

It is my responsibility to build an altar to the Lord in my

heart, maintain it, and visit it frequently. I take my sin,
sorrow, faults, and failings to God at this altar and offer them
as I would a burnt offering, letting God’s fire consume them
and reprove me. I take my confidences, joys, and praise as
peace offerings, willingly sharing them with my Master and
continually submitting them to Him. I call on the Lord at my
altar, discussing my requests and desires with Him, and
seeking His face concerning them.

Finally, it is at the altar where God answers from Heaven by

fire. Since my body is the temple, I can never leave my altar.
As I maintain altar-consciousness and listen for God’s voice,
I will hear Him speak through His Word, through other
Christian brothers and sisters, and even through
observations of nature, which after all is the work of His
hands.

Consider these two verses: For we are the temple of the living
God. As God has said:

14
"I will live with them and walk among them, and I
will be their God, and they will be my people." 2
Corinthians 6:16(NIV)

You also, like living stones, are being built into a

spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering
spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ. 1 Peter 2:5 (NIV)

I encourage you today to become altar-conscious. If you’re

just starting out, build your heart’s altar to the Lord by
making a determination to spend daily time with Him. You
may have to repair your neglected altar. That’s all right; just
do it and take up where you left off. If you already spend
regular times with God, keep it up. Whatever the case, it’s a
joy to know that God eagerly desires to spend time with us.

Exodus 38:1 And he made the altar of burnt offering

of shittim wood: five cubits was the length thereof,
and five cubits the breadth thereof; it was foursquare;
and three cubits the height thereof.

Exodus 38:2 And he made the horns thereof on the

four corners of it; the horns thereof were of the same:
and he overlaid it with brass.
15
Exodus 38:3 And he made all the vessels of the altar,
the pots, and the shovels, and the basons, and the
fleshhooks, and the firepans: all the vessels thereof
made he of brass.

Exodus 38:4 And he made for the altar a brasen grate

of network under the compass thereof beneath unto
the midst of it.

Exodus 38:5 And he cast four rings for the four ends
of the grate of brass, to be places for the staves.

Exodus 38:6 And he made the staves of shittim wood,

and overlaid them with brass.

Exodus 38:7 And he put the staves into the rings on

the sides of the altar, to bear it withal; he made the
altar hollow with boards.

A Living Sacrifice,

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by

the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is
your reasonable service.

16
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world:
but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable,
and perfect, will of God.

1 Kings 1:50 And Adonijah feared because of

Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on
the horns of the altar.

1 Kings 1:51 And it was told Solomon, saying,

Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he
hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let
king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.

1 Kings 1:52 And Solomon said, If he will shew

himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him
fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in
him, he shall die.

1 Kings 1:53 So king Solomon sent, and they

brought him down from the altar. And he came and
bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said
unto him, Go to thine house.

2 Samuel 24:22 And Araunah said unto David, Let

my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good
17
unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the
oxen for wood.

2 Samuel 24:23 All these things did Araunah, as a

king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the
king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

2 Samuel 24:24 And the king said unto Araunah,

Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither
will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God
of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought
the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of
silver.

The entire design of the tabernacle is one large sermon, not

only the building's design but even the furnishings and even
the types of materials used in making the tabernacle and its
furnishings! We've already discovered from the last message
that there was but a single entrance to God within the design,
the eastern gate.

Jesus is that door or gate, the entrance to God. Now that we

have entered the proper way, where are we? What is the first
thing we come to once inside? God has a very important
message for those who are now in the door by what awaits
them as the first point of contact!
18
The first thing to greet us after entering the door is the altar
of sacrifice! Perhaps for some Christians they would have
preferred to find the table of shewbread where God makes
provision for us but we find ourselves first at a place of
sacrifice! Nothing of real value comes to us without real
sacrifice! Those things that do come to us without real
sacrifice we don't appreciate or we are indifferent to. A
Biblical faith is one that recognizes a priority of sacrifice and
the willingness to give rather than to get.

Any faith worth its salt understands the imperative for

sacrifice. A sacrificial character is a must for those who
approach the presence of God! There was no way to bypass
the ALTAR OF SACRIFICE on the way into God's presence
in the tabernacle!

MATERIALS OF THE ALTAR;

Exodus 38:1 And he made the altar of burnt offering

of shittim wood: five cubits was the length thereof,
and five cubits the breadth thereof; it was foursquare;
and three cubits the height thereof.

Exodus 38:2 And he made the horns thereof on the

four corners of it; the horns thereof were of the same:
and he overlaid it with brass.

19

A. The "Stuff!" Exodus 38:1-7

1. "Acacia" wood was the basic material of the altar ... this is
a very unique wood!

20
a. It is a tree that grows in the desert under severe
conditions, one of the hardiest trees on earth!

b. The wood from this tree is nearly indestructible!

c. It is almost completely immune from insects and rot.

d. The grain is very gnarled and twisted as well as very hard

very durable.

2. This wood was chosen for its quality of being nearly

indestructible, a shadow of the Christ who is eternal!

3. The wood was then covered with brass or bronze. This

material symbolized judgment in the Old Testament.

a. Indeed, nearly all the metal used outside the tabernacle

itself was made from bronze ... demonstrating that outside
the dwelling of God is found judgment!

b. The altar by its appearance reminded the believer of

God's judgment. It was on this altar that the sacrificial
animal was presented for God's judgment to be removed
from the believer as he began his journey toward God’s
presence!
21
c. Thus it was the place of sacrifice! Its ultimate expression
found again in Christ who took our judgment and who also
was the sacrifice!

4. There were 4 horns on the altar ... used to bind the

sacrificial animal to the altar, a horn on each corner of the
altar.

5. There was no way to approach the presence of God within

the tabernacle and bypass this altar ... it stood as the first
thing after entering the courtyard!

a. It was a must "stopping" place!

b. You did not dare continue toward God without coming

first to the place of sacrifice! If you did you would have been
considered "impure!"

B. The Symbolism

22
1. The wood of the altar symbolizes the quality of our
sacrifices to God it must be of high-grade quality, no cheap
wood could have survived the constant fires of the altar of
sacrifice, neither will "cheap" sacrifices for Christ!

2. The bronze stood for judgment the world will judge our
Christianity by the way we live sacrificially too, a faith that
is not worth sacrificing for is not a faith worth living for!

3. There was no way of avoiding this altar of sacrifice ... you

practically ran into it once you entered the only entrance to
the courtyard. There is no such faith for a Christian that does
not include "sacrifice," it cannot be avoided!

4. Any attempt to bypass this place of sacrifice ended in

death!

a. Anyone that thinks they can live for God without a need
for sacrifice will only find a dead Christianity!

b. God requires sacrifice!

23
5. The order of approach to God cannot be ignored ... this
was the first stopping place after entering the gate ... the
place of sacrifice!

MESSAGE OF THE ALTAR 1 Kings 1:50

A. The Search

1. The approach to God includes this place of sacrifice, any

other route that bypasses this altar will not lead to God!

2. Today you will hear much preaching that attempts to

draw people into Christianity that promises of all kinds of
earthly "goodies" ... preaching a Christianity that expects no
sacrifices by the individual is a hollow Christianity!

3. There is too much "shallow" Christianity now in the world

... Christians who only want but do not give!

24
4. Jesus clearly taught us sacrifice by His own statement, "I
came not into the world to do my own will ... but the will of
Him who sent me!"

5. The search for the real God will always bring us first to
the place of sacrifice!

6. "Sacrificial giving" is the very character of true

Christianity!

a. In our lifestyle.

b. In our faith.

c. In our resources.

d. In our heart attitudes.

B. The Service 1 Kings 1:50; 2 Samuel 24:24

25
1. In the Old Testament if someone needed God's protection
he could run to this altar and take hold of the "HORNS OF
THE ALTAR."

a. 1 Kings 1:50 is an example: Adonijah took hold of the

horns of the altar for protection. (He lived … Joab who was
not innocent however was killed – 1 Kings 2:28)

b. "Taking hold of the horns of the altar" symbolized your

becoming a willing bound sacrifice ... since the horns were
used to bind a sacrifice!

c. It literally meant you made yourself the sacrifice on that

altar by your own will!

d. Thus someone who did this was treated very carefully ...
they were examined to be sure they were really innocent of
guilt and only then were they dealt with! A judgment was
rendered over them only after careful consideration of the
facts.

2. 2 Sam. 24:24 -- David wished to build an altar of sacrifice

to worship the Lord, he clearly states that he could not accept
for "free" the land and the sacrifices from Araunah; he would
not offer a sacrifice to God that cost him nothing!!

a. Cheap Christianity does not work!

b. A commitment to Christ that is without sacrifice is no

commitment!

26
c. There are enough worldly calls that promise: "AT NO
COST" ... this doesn't work in the kingdom of God!

These sacrifices were very real, they were not just the
appearances of sacrifice!

4. A dynamic faith is very real; it will not just have the

appearance of sacrifices.

5. Our service to God includes frequent sacrifices but the

value this gives to our witness is very powerful!

6. Jesus' sacrifice of Himself was the greatest and costliest ...

but it also brought to us the greatest and most valuable gift,
eternal life! There was no easy cheap way to give the finest
gift.

7. Your faith and the quality of your spiritually will only be

as good as the sacrifices you make because of it!

27
a. Those whose faith always seems vital and real are those
who have learned the service of sacrifice!

b. There are no good substitutes for this kind of faith!

8. The message of the altar is clear: “you can't bypass this

place of sacrifice and expect to find yourself in god’s
presence!”

MANIFESTATION OF THE ALTAR

A. The Sacrifice Romans 12:1

1. Paul spells it out clearly in the New Testament, "...offer

your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God..."
Romans 12:1

a. Paul speaks out clearly what is symbolized by the altar of

sacrifice we are to be a living sacrifice!

b. One difference however, the Old Testament sacrifices

were killed since Christ paid the price of death we do no
need to physically die anymore, thus we are to be "living"
sacrifices!

28
c. One problem with this, unlike a dead sacrifice living ones
tend to want to crawl off the altar ... especially when they feel
the heat!

d. This is when we need to take hold of the horns of the altar

to keep from leaving the altar of sacrifice! We too must be
bound to the altar, instead of with ropes we need to be
connected by God's love for others!

2. Notice that Paul says that "this is our spiritual act of

worship." 12:1b

a. The basis of spiritually is in sacrifice ... even in worship!

b. Too many of us think of a "good" worship service as

coming from what we got OUT of the service! But in truth a
good worship service happens from what we PUT INTO the
service!

c. No wonder the Bible uses the term; "A SACRIFICE OF

PRAISE!"

d. A dynamic worship service is not so much what I get as

much as what I give!

Sacrifices:

29
(1. Of praise.

(2. Of our material resources ... tithes & offerings.

(3. Of time.

(4. Of talents.

3. The goal therefore is not to GAIN but to GIVE!

a. Ironically however when we give we do gain!

b. And the sweetest gains come from giving!

The Secret!

1. How do I find God's will? This is a question that most

Christians ask at some point, Paul tells us the secret here on
how you can know and do the will of God!

a. The world preaches "GIVE ME" ... we are not to be

conformed to the world's mentality.

b. we are to be transformed in our minds from "give me" to

"i give me" and when we transform our thinking to giving --

30
to sacrifice we will discover in the process that we will
demonstrate god's will!

2. In fact we will “test and approve his perfect will!”

3. Too many Christians misunderstand God's will ... they

think of it in terms of "What do I do now?" ... or "What does
God want me to do exactly?"

a. The will of God is an attitude and when this is right the

choices we make will be right ... thus we will always do the
Will of God!

b. The Will of God is found in a basic quality ... that of

sacrifice! When we really give of ourselves we quite literally
“test and approve” what God's will is everyday ... and in
every way!

c. Thus His perfect will plays itself out in our everyday life
and we will live in His will as we walk!

31
d. The right heart will make the right choices ... Jesus always
did the will of his father And He always considered Himself
as a sacrifice!

4. We can't miss God's best in our lives if we indeed have

approached God by way of the altar of sacrifice!

5. Those that begin with the altar of sacrifice end up in the

very presence of God! Those who bypass this altar of
sacrifice bypass the highest quality of faith and they will miss
out on the real presence of God in their lives!

6. The secret to dynamic faith and knowing the presence of

God in a powerful way is via the altar of sacrifice! Have you
been there yet?

Once through the door (Jesus Christ), the first stop for a
believer on their way into fellowship with God was the altar
of sacrifice! Too many Christians want to bypass the altar of
sacrifice and find the table of showbread first, the place of
provisions. We are not allowed to bypass the place of
sacrifice first!

We must have an altar for our own benefit. It is impossible

to live for God with a carnal mind. The carnal mind is the
enemy of God and is not willing to be subjected to the law of
God indeed, it cannot be! To be spiritually minded, one must
continually stir up the gift of God that is within him. Oh

32
sure, we can dress the part, refrain from going to the places
we shouldn't, and keep all of the rules of the church, but if
we do not maintain our spirituality by concisely visiting our
personal altar, we will not be saved.

The house is painted but nobody's home! "If that Spirit which
raised Christ from the dead DWELL in you, it shall also
quicken your mortal bodies." That Spirit must DWELL in us.
The Spirit of God must be maintained within us. This is not
accomplished in its totality simply by attending church. One
must maintain the fire upon his personal altar. We must
build an altar for the benefit of our children. As I have
previously mentioned, my parents provided exemplary
teaching on altar building through their lives. How many
nights did I hear my father pray? How many mornings have
I awakened to hear the sounds of my mother's prayers?

A generation arises that knows not the Lord because they do

not develop a relationship with the Lord for themselves. If
we expect our children to worship, we must exemplify
worship. If we expect our children to give offerings and pay
tithes, we must do it ourselves. If we want our children to
obey the commission and be witnesses, we must be involved
in outreach. If we expect our children to pray, they must see
us involved in prayer. Our homes should be an altar unto the
Lord.
33
We must build an altar for the benefit of the lost. There are
those whom we all love who do not have an altar. They have
either never built an altar, or they have allowed their altars
to fall into disrepair. They have left the house of the Lord and
are living in sin. We must build an altar for those will not
build one for themselves.

The Word says, "I sought for a man among them who would
make up the hedge and stand in the gap, and I found none."
We must have an altar of intercession in our lives for the
benefit of the lost!

There are many things we could do without in the church

today if necessary. We could live without our organs, pianos,
guitars, PA systems, Sunday School programs, children's
ministry, choirs, singing groups, and so many other things
we deem important in today's church. In fact, if necessary,
we could meet in a pine thicket and have church.

Too often, we have substituted the things we could do

without for the one thing we need the most...THE ALTAR!
We have chosen the SUPERFICIAL things of life over the
SUPERNATURAL things of the Spirit. We have learned how
to PLAY instead of PRAY. We have learned how to

34
ENTERTAIN instead of INTERCEDE. Where is the travail of
the saints? Where are the groaning which cannot be uttered?
Where are the preachers with a fire in their bellies and saints
with a passion for Christianity?

HOW TO BUILD AN ALTAR

36
HOW TO BUILD AN ALTAR

A
bram passed through the land to the place of
Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh.
And the Canaanites were then in the land.
Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your
descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar
to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And he moved from
there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent
with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an
altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. So
Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. Genesis
12:6-9

…to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And
there Abram called on the name of the Lord. … Then Abram moved
his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which
are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord. —Genesis 13:4,
18

37
Altars Are a Memorial to the Place Where God Meets Us.
Altars represent the occasion and place where we have had
a personal encounter with God. We may not always be able
to make a physical altar, but there can be one established in
our hearts. When we celebrate communion, we are
celebrating the grandest altar of all—the Cross of Calvary
upon which the Son of God was laid forth as the sacrifice: to
reconcile all humankind to God and to make possible the
infusion of our lives with meaning, the forgiveness of all sins
and the promise of eternal life.

Altars appear throughout the Bible in many different forms.

They are:

A place of encounter—The Lord met Jacob in a crisis, and the

next day he built an altar at that place (Genesis 28).

A place of forgiveness—The brazen altar of the tabernacle

sacrifice was offered as an advance testimony that there
would be a once-for-all sacrifice in God’s Son.

A place of worship—The most common altar built by people

to acknowledge their praise to God was the altar of incense,
the holy place where priests would offer worship to the Lord
on behalf of the people and themselves.

38
A place of covenant—An altar was built where the covenant
was made between the Lord and Abraham, and the land was
sealed as a timeless promise to Abraham and his offspring
(Genesis 15).

A place of intercession—The prophet Joel called for

intercession by leaders on behalf of the people and their
devastated economy. (If you know Jesus, you’re a leader!)

God Has a Place of “Altaring” for Us.

There is a place of “altaring” and a price of altering. Altars

have a price—God intends that something be “altered” in us
when we come to altars. To receive the promise means we
make way for the transformation. Have you ever felt that the
Lord put in your heart an expectation of promise? Such
aspirations come from the Lord (Psalm 62:5). You sense
anticipation of something God has put in your heart and
underwritten by promises in His Word. You look at the
promise and begin to picture in your mind what it’s going to
be like. The fact is, we often visualize things that have
nothing whatsoever to do with what God wants to do with
us.

A bigger sacrifice is equal to a greater breakthrough. As the

Bible stated on one king who wanted to win the war and had
to give their son as a sacrifice!! The more you want to achieve
is the more you have to give. If your forefathers have 5 cows,
39
you cannot actually give 1 cow to drop down the altar,
actually you have to give more and/or equivalent.

For some to be rich they would sacrifice their children, their

children’s womb so in order for that child to give birth, they
actually have to give a greater sacrifice. I was introduced to
altar-building at a young age. In time I started to create my
own altars in my home and found that they allowed me
many opportunities which I would not have experienced
otherwise. The following benefits are why I build altars, and
how they can change your life.

1. It allows you the individual to have a direct connection

with the divine, however you choose to view the divine.

2. You learn new and creative ways to view situations in

your life.

3. Building altars is a positive way to actually do

something about those things in your life which may be
negatively influencing you. That connection with the divine
is always a good thing.

4. It helps you to have a spiritual center in your life even

if you don’t participate in a form of organized religion.
However, you can still build altars even if you do. It will still
enrich your life.

5. Creating altars is an art form. Contrary to what some
may think, figuring out what to put on your altar in order to
garner the results you want takes time, thought and an
understanding of symbolism. Maybe you think you can’t
draw, paint or even write, but anybody can build a beautiful
altar.

6. Building altars is meditative and relaxing. Another

benefit in this high stress world we live in.

7. If you are a crafter, creating items for your altar is

another way to relax and do something for you.

8. Altars create a spiritual center in your home and create

positive energy and flow of energy throughout your home.

9. Altars are one way to introduce children to spirituality

and the divine, and also to allow them to actively participate
by helping you with the building if they so choose.

As you can see there are many benefits to both building

altars and having them in your home. It is my hope that
many more people will take advantage of this wonderful tool
for spiritual living which we all have access to.

STEPS IN BUILDING AN ALTAR UNTO THE LORD

Revelation 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of him

that sat on the throne a book written within and on
the backside, sealed with seven seals.

Revelations 5:2 And I saw a strong angel

proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open
the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

Revelations 5:3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth,

neither under the earth, was able to open the book,
neither to look thereon.

Revelations 5:4 And I wept much, because no man

was found worthy to open and to read the book,
neither to look thereon.

Revelations 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me,

Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the
Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and
to loose the seven seals thereof.

Revelations 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of

the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of
the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having
seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven
Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

42
Revelations 5:7 And he came and took the book out
of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

Revelations 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the

four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down
before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and
golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of
saints.

Revelations 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying,

Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the
seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed
us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;

Revelations 5:10 And hast made us unto our God

kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

1. Demolish old altars and repent over idolatry.

In raising an altar unto the Lord we must ensure that we are

not building on an existing altar that was raised to Satan.
That is why we begin with repentance. We must be very
thorough. Repent first of your own personal sins and the sins
of your forefathers. It must be identification repentance like
Nehemiah, Daniel and Ezra did on behalf of their people.

43
2. Stand as a Priest/King and plead for mercy.

Identify yourself as a king and priest of God (Rev. 5:10).

Begin to appropriate what the scripture says in the book of 1
Peter 2:9 (But ye are a chosen generation ...) concerning you.
Our priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek and Jesus
Christ.

3. Address the deity in the name of Jesus Christ,

calling it by name.

After taking a thorough repentance for sins committed, we

have to breakdown evil altars and address existing altars,
which hinder us. Using the name of Jesus Christ address
with the Word of God the deity which was enthroned and
throw down any existing altars calling them directly by
name. Acknowledge the abomination and God’s right to
punish the sin of idolatry on your part and on behalf of your
people. Realize that every idolatrous altar has links with
Satan. Realize also that the worship given to the deities
behind those idolatrous altars which dates back many
generations even to the fall of man is in actual fact the
enthronement of evil by Satan.

4. Renounce every existing agreement between demons

and those who built that altar.

44
Renounce every token, dedication, vow, or promise made to
that god. Renounce any binding words spoken and
deliberately reverse any which may have been placed as
injunctions or sanctions against those who will refuse to
worship these idols.

5. Destroy the former priesthood.

Remove their priestly garments and take away their staff of

authority as well as their mandate to minister at those altars.

6. Charge the whole of creation to bear witness to what

you are doing.

When they entered into these evil covenants our ancestors

would invite creation to take note of their deeds. The rivers,
mountains, sun, moon and stars were called to witness the
enactment of ordinances. Therefore, you must also address
them to bear witness to your act of reversing of those
covenants. Every word must be renounced, reversed and
nullified. This is how to render those words powerless and
make them of no effect.

7. Now you must raise a new altar to God.

45
HOW TO RAISE AN ALTAR

1. Locate a spot and make it a place of worship and

consecration.

2. Hallow it by pouring anointing oil, wine or water on

it.

3. Call upon the name of the Lord and ask the three to
bear record on earth and in heaven to take note
that you are raising an altar to Him on that spot.

4. Name the altar e.g. an altar of consecration, an altar of

remembrance, an altar of righteousness, an altar of
restoration, an altar of mercy etc.

5. Mark your altar. God directed Israel to use twelve

stones to raise Israel’s national altar. You have to mark your
altar with something memorable.

WHO CAN BUILD AN ALTAR?

Only a person who is spiritually alive and qualified can raise

an altar. When God begins to speak to people about altars,
He wants to enter into a fresh covenant with them. He wants
to visit the land. He wants to bring about changes. That is
why we must keep the altars of our soul alive.
