Anyone who has read the Gospels is well aware that
when Jesus sent out His disciples he told them to heal the sick
and cast out demons. After He left, the disciples continued what
they had learned under Jesus. The Acts of the Apostles is
packed with stories of how the apostles spread the gospel
through signs and wonders. Toward the end of the Book of
Romans, Paul looks back on his ministry and says, “I will not
dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not
accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the
Gentiles obedient—in mighty signs and wonders by the power
of the Spirit of God” (Romans 15:18-19).
Why do I bring this up? Because, once we think of it, it
becomes very clear that Jesus’ design for His church was a
church characterized by healings, miracles, signs and wonders.
Moving in tangible, supernatural power was supposed to be a
normal part of the life and activity of every church from then on.
However, think of the many churches in your city or in your
region. You will find very few, if any at all, that have a reputation
among the general public as places where you can go for
powerful ministry if you need physical healing. Hospitals and
physicians and chiropractors and naturopaths abound. You can
find them in the Yellow Pages. But try to find churches with
healing ministries in the Yellow Pages! Any that might be there
are clearly exceptions to the rule. However, if we followed the
pattern of Jesus and the apostles they should be the rule.
Don’t you agree that there is something wrong?
We need to fix it!
No one I know in America has more desire to fix it than
Robert Henderson. When I first met him not too long ago, the
topic of our conversation soon turned to signs and wonders,
and I immediately felt the passion the Lord had given him for
healing the sick. He told me how the sizeable church he had
founded in Texas had incorporated healing as a part of every
service. The word got out. People would regularly travel in from
out of town and even from out of state, and many would return
home wonderfully healed.
The first time I saw Robert minister I had a vivid
flashback. I saw John Wimber ministering healing! This was
very moving to me because John and I were very close when
he began his healing ministry around 1980. I brought John to
Fuller Seminary where I was teaching, and his courses there
drew national attention. John passed away several years ago.
What I remember most is his dislike of being regarded as a
superstar faith healer because his heart desire was to equip the
whole body of Christ for healing the sick in the power of the
Holy Spirit. As you will see in this book, this is exactly the road
Robert is taking. He wants you to understand how the power of
the Holy Spirit for signs and wonders is available to you as well.
I am very excited about this book because it goes
much further than previous books on healing ministries could
have gone. God continues to reveal His new plans and
seasons, and Robert Henderson is one who has a keen ear to
hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. I
don’t know of any other book on healing that relates signs and
wonders directly to:
Apostolic Government. The Second Apostolic
Age began in 2001. Power ministries are much more
effective when God’s servants are biblically aligned in the
proper apostolic order.
The Dominion Mandate. The title of the book
itself, Apostolic Dominion Through Signs and Wonders,
brings these two items together and Henderson shows how
healing power can go beyond merely helping individuals to
a higher level of seeing visible progress in reforming
society itself for the kingdom of God.
High Level Spiritual Warfare. When God is
present and apostolic alignment is in order, “Devils,
demons, principalities, powers, dominions, and rulers
cannot resist the power and glory of God’s manifest
presence.” Powers of darkness over regions, territories,
and nations will break down, opening the way for God’s
kingdom.
The book you have in your hands is definitely a world-
changing word from the Lord for this crucial time. As you read
it, pray that God will mold you into the vessel that will enable
you to fulfill every part of the destiny He has for you!

We are living in what has been termed a second apostolic age.
The Lord is restoring apostolic authority in the earth. As this
occurs, the kingdom of God is established and the rule of God
is known. I have come to believe that the ultimate goal of the
Lord is social transformation. In other words, the Lord desires
to re-claim all of His creation and make it His throne and place
of dominion. For much of history the church’s goal has not been
high enough. We have thought that if we could just get a few
people saved and to heaven that we had accomplished our
purpose. But this is absolutely wrong. The purpose of the Lord
is the displacement of evil devilish hierarchy and the
establishment of His authority in the earth so that earth begins
to reflect heaven. This happens only from the authority that
God has entrusted into the hands and hearts of His apostles in
the earth. We are still learning much about all this and will
continue to. The truth is that God’s dominion in the earth is
irrevocably connected to the release of apostolic authority. The
more fully we see the apostolic reformation become
established, the greater the dominion of the Lord will be in the
earth and the reflection of it in culture.
As this takes place, we will see measurable change and
transformation in cities, cultures and nations. But I am
convinced that such a thing cannot be organized into place. In
other words, we cannot see this happen until the principalities
that rule regions of the globe are removed from their influence
and dominance. This is where we as the people of God and as
the church come in. The Apostle
Paul spoke of the fact that he did not war and fight as one who
beat the air or shadow boxed in I Corinthians 9:26:
Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight:
not as one who beats the air.
One who beats the air or shadow boxes will expend much
energy and effort and accomplish nothing except to wear
himself out. He is not landing any blows on his opponents.
There is no damage being done to the adversary. I know that
this has been my experience many times in the past.
But the Lord is teaching us how to be more strategic and less
depleting of ourselves while gaining more results.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 gives us a great rule to live from. This
verse declares:
If the ax is dull,
And one does not sharpen the
edge, Then he must use more
strength; But wisdom brings
success.
We must take the time to sharpen the ax head and become
more proficient in our efforts of kingdom rule. This is what this
book is about. I have endeavored to show that apostolic
dominion and therefore kingdom rule and as a result social
transformation cannot occur without signs and wonders. Not
just signs and wonders from an evangelistic standpoint, but a
release of apostolic authority and dominion through signs and
wonders that alters and re-shapes spiritual realities that control
and govern natural things in planet earth. In my opinion this has
been a missing ingredient in the efforts of the church to see the
regions of the globe transformed and freed from devilish
powers and domination.
So the game is up devil. You have been exposed. The sham
you have run is over. The covers have been peeled back and
God’s strategies are being seen. No longer will we shadow box
and not land our blows. Through the principles in this book and
others like it, the blows will be landed, the knock out punch
delivered and the ruler of this age dethroned.
Not only will precious folks be healed, delivered and saved, but
apostolic and kingdom dominion released that alter history just
like it did in the first apostolic age. Only this time it will usher in
the glorious return of the Lord to planet earth and we will reign
with Him forever. Let’s go after it. Enjoy the book and be
empowered.

I have always had a passion and desire for signs and wonders
to operate in my life. The earliest remembrance I have of this
happening was when I was around 13 years old. My pastor’s
father was having some kind of physical pain in his back. My
pastor, recognizing the call of God on my life, brought me
forward as a young teenager and had me lay hands on his
father during a Bible study. As I did, to my amazement, the
Lord began to touch him and he began to proclaim that warmth
was going into his back and that the pain was leaving him.
What made this even more astonishing was that this man was
a dyed-in-the-wool Baptist. This was not a wild-eyed
charismatic. My hunger for the supernatural of the Lord was
fueled even more. So when I talk about the healing power of
the Lord it is more than just a passing fancy of mine. It has
been with me all of my Christian life and experience.
Up until shortly before this experience, my family was a
staunch religious people in a very legalistic, and in my
estimation dead denomination. As a young boy, I absolutely
hated going to church. The interesting thing about this was I
had what I now know was a hunger for the Lord. I hated
church, but hungered for the Lord. I didn’t understand it at
that time, but it seems that instinctively I was always
interested in that which was spiritual and supernatural. As
my family came out of this
religious place and into the things of the Spirit, I was thrilled. I
remember the first time I walked into a charismatic, Spirit-filled
service. I felt the life of God, even though I didn’t know what to
call it then. My heart was gripped with His presence and I was
hooked for life. This is when the yearning to walk in and
experience the supernatural miracles of the Lord began to
possess me.
Many years have passed since those times and in my journey
and desire to operate in the healing and miracle working power
of the Lord I have had many ups and downs. There have been
times when I thought it was a useless effort to even try because
it didn’t seem that anyone was getting healed. There have been
other times of inexpressible joy as I have watched God do
wonderful and supernatural acts. I have witnessed thousands of
people being given their lives back, as sickness and disease
was crushed under the weight of His glory and presence. We
serve such a great and awesome Lord.
In the midst of this journey, I began to discover that God heals
people for a myriad of reasons. He heals because it is who He
is in nature as Jehovah-Raphe. (Exodus 15:26) He heals
because of His great love and compassion as Jesus
demonstrated when He came to reveal the Father’s heart. He
heals so that people will know that He is who He says He is
and should give their lives to Him. There are other reasons
that the Lord heals, but I want to focus on the following
reason: He heals and uses healing as an apostolic vehicle to
break ruling powers over regions and territories.
I am assuming that most who are reading this book have at
least a basic understanding of the fact that there is a
devilish hierarchy that rules regions and territories which is
why the apostle Paul spoke of wrestling with principalities and
powers. Ephesians 6:12 clearly shows that there are entities
that have places of influence over regions and territories that
determine atmospheres, cultures, activities and other
expressions of life:
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the rulers
of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly places.
The purpose of the wrestling match that Paul describes is to
subdue these powers and bring them down so that the hearts
and minds of people within a given region can be turned toward
the Lord and His kingdom.
We know that the unseen or spiritual realm dictates and
controls the seen realm or that which is natural. This is why the
Bible speaks of the heavens or the realm of the spirit being shut
up or as bronze. Devilish powers can have a choke hold on a
specific region and not allow the influence of the Lord to
operate at full capacity in the earth. The reason these powers
can operate this way is because of the sins of the people of a
region from generations gone by and our present generation as
well. These sins result in a curse that shuts up the heavens so
that there is no rain. The Lord spoke of this in Deuteronomy
28:23-24 when the Lord was revealing the curses that would
come as a result of the disobedience of the people:
And your heavens which are over your head shall be
bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron.
The Lord will
change the rain of your land to powder and dust;
from the heaven it shall come down on you until you
are destroyed.
This verse was not just speaking of a lack of natural rain, but
also of what happens when the devilish powers have a right to
function in the spirit realm over a region, territory or even
nation. Notice when the heavens or spirit realm is shut up as
bronze and nothing can penetrate or get through, that the earth
becomes as iron. This speaks of men’s hearts and the
hardening effect of sin. Rain is a picture of the word of God, the
grace of God, the Spirit of the Lord or any other influence that
comes from heaven.
We must understand that it is the job of God’s people to open
heaven so that the Lord can come down. This is what the
prophet Isaiah was declared in Isaiah 64:1-2. He is crying out
for the heavens or the demonic powers that are in place to be
rent apart and removed so that the Lord Himself can descend
into the earth with His rain:
Oh, that You would rend the heavens!
That You would come down!
That the mountains might shake at Your presence
As fire burns brushwood,
As fire causes water to boil
To make Your name known to Your adversaries, That
the nations may tremble at Your presence!
Again, the job of the people of the Lord is to rend the
heavens so that God can come down in His fullness and
power. The objective of the demonic realm is to hold the Lord
in heaven, so that the earth stays as iron and the kingdom of
God is not established. This is why Jesus
taught us to pray, “Come your kingdom, be done Your will on
“earth” as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
It is important to note that this process isn’t just a sliding open of
the heavens, but a rending of them. Anytime you see these
powers being removed and neutralized it is with forcefulness.
When Jesus was baptized the Word says that the heavens
were opened over him. What it really says in Mark 1:10 is
interesting:
And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw
the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon
Him like a dove.
The word parting is the Greek word schizo which means to
split, sever or tear open. The opening of the heavens takes
force, passion and vehement effort. It takes power. If we are to
remove and neutralize these powers of the devil that have the
heavens shut up over regions, we must realize it will be at the
expense of a warring mentality.
As I have functioned in signs, wonder, healings and miracles, I
discovered something quite interesting. As the release of
miracles takes place, a simultaneous breaking of the
wickedness in the spirit dimension occurs, hence the whole idea
behind this book. In the next chapter I will share the theological
basis for this that the Lord has shown me. We will discover that
it is important to rend the heavens and move powers out of the
way in regions with the instrument of signs and wonders. As
miracles occur from an apostolic format, the atmosphere over
churches, cities and regions change as devilish powers are
subdued under the Lordship of Jesus. The healing anointing
becomes a vehicle of apostolic power that dismantles the
darkness that rules regions.
As an apostolic center was established under my leadership,
we began to hold very powerful healing services. People were
coming not just from our city and its churches, but also from
surrounding cities as well. I noticed that before each of these
services was over that a very clear breaking in the spirit realm
was taking place.
You could sense the atmosphere change and the “rain” of God
begin to fall. Liberty, freedom and excitement would begin to
possess the people as this supernatural occurrence took place.
I also have to tell you that along with what I consider was a
wholesale release of God’s power in our midst that there were
critics and adversaries in the city which were against us. The
place where this was happening had a very strong religious
spirit that we contended with earnestly. Yet in these services, I
instinctively knew that something more than people getting
healed was taking place. Something was being altered in the
spirit realm over that region. As I contemplated this, a pastor in
the city came to me one day with a dream that he had had. This
man was heavily involved in the healing services we were
having. He began to relate that in the dream I was standing on
the platform leading a healing service. He said that as I stood
there under the anointing of the Lord I was releasing the
healing power of God. I was posturing myself and setting my
faith and setting God free in our midst to heal. (I will get into
how this is done apostolically later on.) He said that as I was
doing this, a high and thick moss covered wall in front of me
was resisting me. As I released the healing anointing into the
atmosphere, the moss evaporated and was
removed from the wall. He said that as I continued to release
the anointing of healing that the wall began to crack. The longer
I released this anointing, the more the wall cracked and he
knew it would eventually fall.
What a great picture of what I am seeking to communicate. The
wall this pastor saw was clearly the thing that resisted the
kingdom work in that region. I personally believe that the moss
was the religious spirit that “covered” everything in that region.
The Lord was showing that the vehicle of the healing anointing
was doing much more than just getting people supernaturally
well. The release of this anointing was carrying a breaker power
that was setting free a whole region from demonic rule and
religious torments. I did in fact see this mossy wall crack under
the weight of this anointing.
As I said there were those who resisted me and the work. The
city was filled with many religious churches and people. Over
400 churches were in this city of 120,000 people. This should
give you an idea of how saturated in religion this area was. We
were ridiculed and spoke evil of for what was happening in the
midst of our ministry. As we simply continued to release the
healing anointing three verifiable things happened. The first
was that over 2,500 people came to know the Lord in a 5 year
span in a region of less than 200,000 people. Evangelism
became extremely easy. It is easy to win peoples hearts when
the powers that have blocked the heavens are removed. The
iron of men’s hearts is softened by the rain of God and they
freely and willingly respond to the Lord and His goodness to be
saved. It is amazing what happens when the powers in the
heavenly realm are rightly ordered and adjusted.
The second thing that happened was the pastors, leaders
and people of the city’s attitude completely changed. The
man who led the largest denominational church sent me a
note that said this:
“Robert, I know you have been misunderstood by many of
your peers in this city, but never apologize for signs and
wonders following your ministry, only apologize when they
don’t.”
This man then took me to lunch and apologized for saying
anything about me that was negative and for listening to
anyone else speaking negatively concerning me. I knew that
the wall was cracking and that the moss was evaporating.
A third thing that began to happen in this region was that other
churches who had spoken evil of me and the ministry, began to
hold healing services of their own. Up until that time, there had
been nothing in any form or fashion to do with healing
mentioned in this city. Yet as the powers that ruled this
religious area began to be neutralized others were free to
pursue and function in the realm of healing throughout the city.
Churches and ministries that were considered mainstream and
fundamental in nature begin to delve into this supernatural
realm. This very clearly showed me that God had used us to
dismantle something in this region through the vehicle of the
healing anointing.
I am completely persuaded that there is an apostolic authority
released when signs and wonders are functioned
in from an apostolic place. Again, the result is not just people
being healed, as good as that is, but also a dismantling of the
demonic powers that control and influence a region. When
these powers are confronted by and through the apostolic
authority through the release of healing, breakthrough begins to
come.
Let me back up and give you a little more insight into what I am
talking about. In the battle to break the ruling powers over this
specific region, I had several different encounters with the
ruling force of this region. Because I was at the very least one
of the ruling apostles in this region, these devilish things
detested me. I had many run-ins with the demonic structure of
this region because of this. One night in the midst of what I
knew to be another level of intense warfare in our fight to
overcome these powers, I had a dream. In the dream a pre-
historic looking beast appeared to me. This entity looked
something like a rhinoceros of our day but had armor all over
its body. It was huge and seeming impenetrable. It was also
holding my son in its jaws, but was unable to crush him. My
son wasn’t hurt, but I knew that if this monster bit down slightly,
his life would be destroyed.
I need to let you know that my child had a pretty severe case of
asthma. This affliction kept him from doing the things he loved
to do, especially athletics. Once, before I knew how serious his
condition was, he and I were going to run in a race. As we
began to run, we traveled no more than a couple of hundred
yards from the starting line when he began to gasp, wheeze
and struggle for air. I have to admit that it scared me as I felt he
was in danger for his life. We got this situation under control,
but I knew then how
serious this was. We were having healing services by this time
and during one of them, I called out a word of knowledge
concerning the healing of asthma. I wasn’t even thinking about
my own son who was now around 13 years old. He later told
me that when this word was released, something hit him in the
chest where he was standing and he began to cough up all
sorts of congestion. He coughed for a long time until everything
that was blocking his breathing was removed and he was
instantly and completely healed. He had been delivered from
this entity’s mouth and jaws.
Now to continue with the dream, as I encountered this devilish
thing he communicated to me three things. I was made to know
that I could leave him alone and he would leave me alone. In
other words, if I didn’t pose a threat to him, he would be no
threat to me. I was also made to know that if I chose to
challenge him, that there were only two more options. I would
either kill him, or he would kill me. In the dream I knew what I
would do. I had not come to that city to cohabitate with the pre-
historic beast of that region. My assignment was to destroy him,
even in the midst of his threats. My problem was I didn’t know
how to bring him down. He was huge, menacing and
threatening. I didn’t know what equipment I needed to
accomplish such a feat, but the Lord was going to add it to me
and teach me some things about healing, signs and wonders
and the apostolic authority it releases.
As we pressed on in the healing anointing, I had another dream.
We had been functioning in this apostolic release of healing for
some time. In this dream, I saw a flock of blackbirds flying high
in the sky overhead. I had a shotgun
in my hand and the thought occurred to me to shoot up into the
midst of this group of birds. As I did, I hit the lead bird of this
flock by chance. We know that blackbirds don’t fly in flocks, but
in my dream they did. This was a picture of the devilish
hierarchy that was ruling the spirit realm of this region. As I hit
this lead bird, he spiraled down to the ground. I went running
over to where he had fallen. As I got to where he was I saw a
long bent and crooked beak as well as long talons. This bird I
instantly knew in the dream was demonic. I had somehow
brought down the lead bird of the region. I now know that at the
least a big part of bringing down this “bird” was the apostolic
authority being carried through the healing release.
Even though I wasn’t as strategic as I felt I should be, the Lord
empowered me through this vehicle to bring down this power
so that people could experience the life and glory of the Lord.
This power is available to all. In the next chapter we will see
examples of this demonstration of apostolic power and
authority at work. It doesn’t necessarily involve yelling or
screaming at the devil, even though there is a time for this. It
involves the release of His presence that brings down the
powers that rules a region.
This is what happened in the days prior to the ministry of
Samuel. In I Samuel 5:2-4 we find the story of the Ark of the
Covenant being taken captive because of the sins of God’s
people. The Ark of the Covenant was the presence of God
made manifest. It was where the Lord Himself resided and
dwelt. The children of Israel had taken this ark into battle,
hoping that the presence of the Lord would defeat their
enemies, but to no avail because of their sin. We
cannot expect for God’s presence to keep us, war for us or help
us when we are knowingly in rebellion toward the Lord. This
was the foolish mistake that these people made. As they took
God’s manifest presence into battle in the form of the ark, they
were defeated nonetheless and the ark was taken captive by
the enemy and brought back to their capital city and set in the
temple of their god, Dagon.
Dagon simply speaks to us of the demonic entities that rule
regions, territories and even nations. As the ark of the Lord was
set up in this temple of worship honoring this devilish power
something very powerful happened:
When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought
it into the temple of Dagon and set it by Dagon. And
when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning,
there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before
the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set it in its
place again. And when they arose early the next
morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the
ground before the ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon
and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the
threshold; only Dagon's torso was left of it.
(I Samuel 5:2-4)
It appears that the first day they find Dagon fallen they think it
is just a coincidence. They set back up this representative of
this devil that ruled this region. The next day they come back
in and he is fallen again, but this time his palms and head are
broken off. This signifies of the power of the presence of God
to bring down ruling forces that occupy a region. The way this
demonic structure was destroyed is very important. The power
that ruled this region of earth was brought down simply by the
presence
of the Lord. When the ark was set up in the temple of this god
or demon, the presence of the Lord caused it to fall.
This is what Psalms 68:1-2 says about the presence of the
Lord. We are told that the presence of God subdues and
destroys anything that opposes the Lord:
Let God arise,
Let His enemies be scattered;
Let those also who hate Him flee before
Him. As smoke is driven away,
So drive them away;
As wax melts before the fire,
So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
Any enemy of the Lord is simply like smoke before wind and
like wax before a fire. These elements are absolutely incapable
of resisting the forces that drive them away and make them
melt. This is what principalities are before the presence of the
Lord. This is why Dagon kept falling until his head and hands
were broken off. Before the presence of the Lord, the
authoritarian place that Dagon occupied and the works that he
had done were destroyed and broken because of the presence
of God. When the presence was just there it dismantled and
undid Dagon and all that he represented.
This is what the Lord said to me. He spoke to my heart and
said, “I will allow you the privilege of establishing my presence
and seeing the Dagons fall from region to region.” This occurs
through the healing presence of the Lord.
When this awesome presence of the Lord is in place, the gods
of this world will fall and the demonic in high places
will be dismantled as the kingdom of God is established by His
presence from region to region. When apostolic authority is in
place to establish God’s presence and power, the devils that
have ruled a given region for generations will be neutralized
and dismantled so that heaven can come to earth and God’s
power and presence can be known.

A lady I had never seen before came up on the platform with a
bronze walker in each hand. She was obviously severely
handicapped and incapacitated. We had proceeded through
the healing service on this Saturday night just like we had
several times before. The healings had been getting “larger”
and more significant the more we pressed and pushed into this
anointing each month. Now here I stood with a lady that clearly
was desperate to be healed. I had never dealt with something
like this with several hundred sets of eyes watching and
waiting to see what would happen. I had preached boldly that
night as I always had that Jesus died and paid for our healing
on the cross and that the Holy Spirit was present to apply this
reality into our lives and make us well. Now here was a lady
who was taking me at my word and believing God to set her
free.
As she stood before me with my workers standing close by, I
asked what her condition was. All attention was on us on the
platform as people all over the sanctuary heard and were
caught up in the drama. She responded that she had MS or
Multiple Sclerosis, a disease of the muscles that weakens and
cripples its victims and can lead to death itself. This dear lady
was obviously in a bad way. She could barely maneuver with
her two walkers and had to be helped on the platform by the
workers. I was to find out
later that she had been stricken with this demonic sickness for
several years and was growing progressively worse.
I stood there with no real faith at all in me for her healing. I am
being honest. I was in a predicament. I had never faced
anything like this before. So I did what I only knew to do. I
asked her what her condition was. She told me MS. I asked her
if she was feeling anything in her body. She said there was a
slight tingling from her waist down. I asked these questions,
because I wanted to see if the Lord was touching her in any
way, but mainly because I didn’t know what else to do. I then
put my hand on her head and declared healing into her body. I
did not feel any particularly strong anointing. I was moving in
faith. As I prayed for her she fell to the floor. I had my workers
pick her back up. I then did the only other thing I knew to do. I
took her walkers away from her and grabbed hold of her arm
and hand and told her to walk with me.
She wobbled, leaned on me heavily and then walked bent over
with great effort until we were about 5 or 6 steps across the
platform. Suddenly before everyone’s eyes she straightened up,
then took off walking the rest of the way across the platform
without assistance, and then ran off the platform to the back of
the sanctuary. Yes, I said she “ran”. She then ran back to the
platform and started jumping up and down giving glory to the
Lord. Everyone in the room had a mixture of astonishment, joy
and even unbelief at what we were witnessing.
This was the first of many major miracles that were
experienced and seen in this region as God used the healing
anointing to unseat powers of darkness. It marked
a new level of the supernatural that entered our midst as we
moved deeper and deeper into His healing presence. The
miracles became a common and expected thing among us. We
find this is Acts 2:43. We are told that the Apostles were doing
signs and wonders as a result of the authority and anointing
Jesus had placed upon them:
Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders
and signs were done through the apostles.
The word many is the Greek word polus and it means to be
common. In other words the miracles were happening with such
rapidity that they were a common every day occurrence. The
miracles we have recorded in the Bible are but a thumbnail
reporting of what actually happened.
Whether it was the ministry of the early church or the ministry of
Jesus Himself, only a small fraction of what happened
miraculously is accounted for. John 21:25 tells us that only the
smallest portion of the miracles that Jesus has been revealed to
us:
And there are also many other things that Jesus did,
which if they were written one by one, I suppose that
even the world itself could not contain the books that
would be written.
Amen.
God intends for the miraculous and the supernatural to be a
normal part of who we are as His people. We are to function in
the supernatural and see the dimension of miracles grow until
the world cannot ignore the claims of Jesus upon their lives.
This is what was happening in the early church. They were
preaching a resurrected Jesus and
performing miracles to prove His aliveness. The miracles being
done at their hands, but especially the hands of the apostles
were releasing a breaker anointing into the spirit realm that was
dethroning the ruling forces. For some reason in America we
have become convinced that miracles are not necessary for
getting the work of the kingdom accomplished. Our demons are
just as big as other nation’s demons around the world. We will
not get what must be accomplished done without the realm of
the supernatural in us and through us. The early apostles and
the church needed the supernatural and so do we.
The first place where I see the apostolic authority being
released through the healing anointing is in Acts 4:23-31.
These verses come as a result of Peter and John having
healed the man at the Gate Beautiful. The magnitude of this
miracle gets the religious leaders all stirred up. Many people
come to know the Lord out of this miracle occurring. Peter and
John are then arrested and taken before the Sanhedrin court.
This is the same court that not many days prior had authorized
the crucifixion of Jesus.
Now these same wicked men are confronting Peter and John
and commanding them not to preach in Jesus’ name anymore.
The problem is that there is a notable miracle that has taken
place and they have no means of disqualifying it. They are
limited as to what they can do to Peter and John without
suffering repercussions from the people. They have no
alternative but to let them go. Peter and John return to the
church and tell them what they were told and then launch into
a prayer meeting. Here is the record of the prayer meeting
they had:
And being let go, they went to their own companions
and reported all that the chief priests and elders had
said to them. So when they heard that, they raised their
voice to God with one accord and said: "Lord, You are
God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all
that is in them, "who by the mouth of Your servant
David have said: 'Why did the nations rage, And the
people plot vain things? The kings of the earth took
their stand, And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.' "For truly
against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed,
both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and
the people of Israel, were gathered together "to do
whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined
before to be done. "Now, Lord, look on their threats,
and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they
may speak Your word, "by stretching out Your hand to
heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through
the name of Your holy Servant Jesus." And when they
had prayed, the place where they were assembled
together was shaken; and they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with
boldness.
As Peter, John and the company of the church began to
pray, they prayed Psalms chapter 2:
Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain
things? The kings of the earth took their stand, and the
rulers were gathered together against the Lord and His
Christ.
When something is against the Lord and His Christ that
means it is anti-Christ. Peter, John and the church
recognized that the anti-Christ spirit that had crucified
Jesus was now coming after them. This is why they said “look
on their threats.” They were feeling the pressure and the sting
of this spirit that was now posturing itself against them, just like
it had the Lord. Notice that this spirit permeates all of society.
These verses say that Herod, Pontius Pilate the Gentiles and
the people of Israel were all under the influence of this anti-
Christ spirit. This is why the Bible says that the spirit of anti-
Christ is already in the world. I John 4:3 tells us that this spirit is
in the world:
and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus
Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this
is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard
was coming, and is now already in the world.
The anti-Christ spirit is alive and well in the earth today and is
working against the purposes of God. It is clearly a powerful
spirit because it crucified Jesus and greatly intimidated the
early apostles. We are not talking about a little imp running
around causing havoc, but rather a principality of gigantic
proportions. The clincher to this whole thing is that the apostles
felt themselves completely insufficient to deal with or contend
with this spirit without the right weapons, equipment and tools.
Notice what they requested from the Lord to neutralize and
dethrone this power. They asked for signs, wonders, miracles
and healings. Acts 4:29-30 tells us that they recognized that
when apostolic signs and wonders were released through
apostolic power people didn’t just get healed, but the powers
they were contending with were bound and dismantled as well.
This was one of the secrets of the early church. They were able
to function in apostolic signs and wonders that didn’t just get
people healed, but
also bound powers of darkness in the form of the anti- Christ
spirit that allowed people to then turn to the Lord.
We see this in other passages of scripture as well. In Acts 9:32-
33 we see the Apostle Peter passing through the country and a
place called Lydda. As he comes into this region there is a man
there named Aeneas who has been paralyzed and bedridden
for 8 years. Peter speaks the word of command and declaration
and Aeneas gets up out of that bed completely restored and
whole. We are then told that all who lived there in those regions
turned to the Lord and were saved:
Now it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of
the country, that he also came down to the saints who
dwelt in Lydda. There he found a certain man named
Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was
paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the
Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Then he
arose immediately. So all who dwelt at Lydda and
Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
What a glorious account of the apostolic power of the Lord
moving in signs and wonders. Please note that not only was a
man healed as a result of the loving kindness of the Lord, but a
whole region was liberated from demonic blindness and they
turned to the Lord.
Some would say that they turned and were saved because they
“saw” the miracle and it convinced them of who Jesus was.
This might have been true for some, but I have some reasons
why this doesn’t add up. First Jesus himself functioned in and
performed massive miracles, but we do
not have any record where whole cities and regions turned to
Him. In fact when Jesus ascended into heaven he had in
finality only 120 who completely obeyed Him and stayed in the
upper room and were His disciples. All the miracles and signs
and wonders had only produced this small number of disciples
after 3½ years of ministry. This isn’t a reflection on Jesus’
ministry, but rather an insight into the timing of the Lord and
what He was going to do through His apostles at a later date.
Jesus’ activity on the cross completely destroyed and
dethroned the powers of darkness that ruled the earth and its
regions. In Colossians 2:14-15 we find a partial account of what
Jesus did on the cross and accomplished:
having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that
was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has
taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a
public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
We see that Jesus completely and totally disarmed and
neutralized the power of the devil. Scripture says that He did
this to principalities and powers. These are the guys that rule
nations, regions and territories. The cross of Jesus and His
activity on it absolutely set in place the disarming of these
entities. Then the apostles that Jesus had called, chosen, set
and commissioned moved forth after the cross and through the
vehicle of signs and wonders released an apostolic authority
that set in place what Jesus had accomplished. Suddenly,
whole cities, regions and territories that had been oblivious and
even antagonistic against the gospel are getting saved and
turning to the Lord. The Lord used the signs and wonders to
carry the
apostolic authority into regions that was putting in place the
work of the cross and the functional disarming of principalities
and powers. Signs and wonders are not just about what they
do in the natural realm, but the release they facilitate in the
spiritual dimension that puts in place what Jesus did on the
cross.
Another reason why a miracle in and of itself could not account
for a whole region turning to the Lord, is that Jesus Himself
taught that this wouldn’t happen even within a family. In Luke
16:19-31, we see Jesus telling a story about a rich man and a
poor man named Lazarus. It seems that the beggar Lazarus
died and was carried by the angels into the bosom of Abraham,
which was a reference to paradise and the place of the
righteous before the cross and the resurrection. The story
continues that the rich man also died and was buried, but he
found himself in torment in Hades. The rich man begins to cry
out for Father Abraham to relieve his pain, yet Abraham has no
way of accommodating him. He then requests that Abraham
send Lazarus back to his family and warn his five brothers to
amend their ways so that they do not find themselves in this
horrible place. Abraham’s response to this request is quite
astounding. Verses 29-31 reveal to us what signs and wonders
cannot do even for a family, much less a region or territory
when they aren’t apostolic in nature:
Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the
prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father
Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they
will repent.' But he said to him, 'If they do not hear
Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded
though one rise from the dead.'
Even if one rose from the dead, the miracle itself does not
have the power to convince even a family to turn to the Lord.
This lets us know that miracles by themselves have a limited
effect. But miracles that are apostolically birthed and born can
break the powers that dominate and set men’s hearts free to
choose the Lord. This was what was happening in the early
church. Apostolic miracles were taking place and it was binding
powers and anti-Christ spirits that ruled whole regions to set
people free in their spirits to turn to the Lord.
Let me say right here that the thing that made the early
churches impact so powerful is that it flowed out of apostolic
authority. This is why the Bible clearly tells us that the signs and
wonders were being done through the hands of the apostles.
(Acts 2:43 and 4:33) There is a difference between miracles
that are apostolic in nature and those which are done out of the
evangelistic anointing for instance. When an anointed
evangelist has signs and wonders following his ministry, it is
used to convince the lost individually of the claims of Jesus on
their lives. You will see people born again from this style of
ministry. But when signs and wonders happen from the
apostolic, not only are there those convinced of who Jesus is
and His love, but there is an abolishing and dethroning of the
powers over regions that rule and control. Suddenly the whole
region is freed from the control of demons because apostolic
authority is being released into the spirit realm as the signs and
wonders occur.
A final reason why it took apostolic authority carried
through signs and wonders to see these regions loosed
from demonic hold is that I personally have witnessed
great miracles occur and the people they happened to were not
even changed. You would think that if someone’s life were
“given back” to them because of the graciousness of the Lord,
that they would be changed forever. But I have witnessed
people healed of cancer, deafness, lameness and many other
dilemmas in their life and it birth no real loyalty to the Lord at all.
This is because God in His goodness healed them and freed
them, but the spirit that controlled them was not dealt with,
much less the spirit that ruled the region. The miracle carried
the goodness of God, but not apostolic virtue to set a region
and a people free.
The Lord in these days is restoring signs and wonders to the
church. But not just miracles that bless or amaze, but miracles
that remove the influence of demons from culture themselves
so that people can turn to the Lord and society can be
influenced. The purpose of miracles is bigger than any of us
have imagined. They are not just to convince the immediate
people who they happen to or those who witness them of who
Jesus is. Miracles can actually break the spirits that dominate
so that people who may never hear of them are freed in their
hearts to respond to the Lord. This is when the Dagons are
pulled down by the established presence of the Lord and come
to destruction. Their head of authority is destroyed that has
harassed and controlled a region and their hands of activity are
broken down so that the debauchery they have propagated is
stopped.
I can tell you from very clear experience that once this begins to
happen, even in a small way, that the work of the gospel
becomes much easier and we truly begin to say,
“…‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD
of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6). This is why the devil has resisted not
just signs and wonders in and from the church but apostolic
signs and wonders. We are on the verge of a great awakening
that will not just convince the minds of people of who Jesus is,
but will capture the hearts as a result of the mighty move of
God. Get ready, it is upon us.

It was right after an evening service where the Lord had moved
in a wonderful way. A lady came up front and asked me if I
would pray for her. My wife Mary was with me and the choir
was staying behind to practice for the weekend services. Other
than these, everyone had pretty well left the sanctuary. This
lady had not been around the church for too long. She was a
Baptist by heritage, but had come in contact with another lady
in the church who had been healed of MS. (Different from the
one that I spoke of in chapter 2.) As a result of the lady’s
testimony concerning her own healing, this woman had come
to believe for God to heal her as well. The mutual connection
that both these ladies had was they were in the television
industry in our locale. Because of this, faith had come into her
heart that what God had done for her acquaintance, He would
do for her. This is the power of people being touched by the
Lord and then sharing it with others. When Jesus healed
people in the Bible, even when He commanded them to tell no
one, they could not keep it quiet. This is what the healing
power and the presence of the Lord produces.
As this lady approached me at the end of the services, she
asked for prayer and informed me that her condition was
fibromyalgia, a disease that creates intense muscle pain that
has been described as “arthritis of the muscles.” This
disease can become so intense that it is incapacitating in
nature. I asked how long she had been diagnosed with this
condition and she said for about nine years. I begin to pray for
her healing, and as I did she began to cry out in increasing
pain. She told me that the moment I began to pray, the pain
and hurt instantly became unbearable. As she told me this, I
recognized that we were dealing with something that was
demonic. The reason I discerned this was that I knew if we
were only dealing with a disease or sickness, it would have
simply left and been healed when I spoke to it. In that it fought
against the anointing that was being released and resisted
leaving, I knew it had to have a demonic root.
I stopped praying and asked her when this thing originated. She
informed me that her son-in-law had been murdered nine years
previously and that her doctors had told her that the stress she
was under during that time had caused the fibromyalgia to
develop. As she related this to me, I responded that the stress
had not caused the fibromyalgia to develop, but had opened a
door for the devil’s forces to come in and afflict her. What we
didn’t need to do was to pray for healing and what doctors had
labeled fibromyalgia, instead we needed to rebuke the devil and
his forces because when they left, the disease would be gone
as well. Since she was from a traditional religious heritage, I
told her that I didn’t want her to be afraid or alarmed if I got loud
or forceful as I dealt with this thing. I then laid hands on her
once again and spoke to the devilish thing that was tormenting
her, told it to leave and commanded healing and restoration into
her body.
As I pronounced judgment against this devilish thing and
decreed healing into her body, she flew backwards
instantly - not the charismatic flop, but a propelling up into the
air and across the stage from where we were standing. This
demonic thing that had tormented her for nine years was
instantaneously gone. She got up off the floor and began to
walk faster and faster, then jogged and finally ran around the
room. She then told us there was no way that she could have
done this before and had been unable to do anything like this
for years. What had held her captive was now gone forever.
This is the wonderful God that we serve. He loves His people
and will do them good.
What was it that set this woman free? There could be many
answers to this question, but the one I would emphasize is that
it was the anointing, or the manifest presence of the Lord. If we
are going to see the powers of the enemy broken individually
and regionally, it will come at the expense of His presence.
Again, please remember that when the presence of God in the
form of the Ark of the Covenant that was set up in the temple of
Dagon, this presence and glory of God caused this demonic
entity to fall and be broken. Devils, demons, principalities,
powers, dominions and rulers cannot resist the power and glory
of God’s manifest presence. All of these will flee at His manifest
presence.
In my opinion, that which dictates and mandates the apostolic
power to break down regional, territorial and even national
powers of darkness is the presence of God that carries
apostolic authority in the spiritual realm. In other words,
apostles have an accompanying presence of God that works
with them along with angelic powers that cause devils to flee.
As apostles function in their God
ordained offices of authority, a presence of the Lord will come
and be revealed that conveys healing and in the process
neutralizes demonic entities. The one thing that devils cannot
endure or contend with is the presence of the Lord. When the
presence of the Lord is near, the destruction of devils and their
works is easy.
I realized the connection between the awesome presence of the
Lord and apostolic authority through an experience that I had. I
had been invited to sit on a very prominent minister’s platform
during a crusade of miracles, signs and wonders. I was honored
to have been asked because I had no real connection with this
ministry. On the day of the crusade, I was in my normal time of
prayer when the Lord spoke to me and told me that “this day I
will give you an endowment.” I knew that an endowment was a
sufficiency of resources that were available until the
commissioned job was finished. I took that word from heaven
and remembered Habakkuk 3:4 where we find the revelation of
how important the presence of God is to the release of power.
His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing
from His hand, And there His power was hidden.
His brightness speaks of the very essence of who the Lord is.
In other words it declares to us His presence. This verse then
tells us that His power is hidden within His presence. When the
presence of the Lord shows up, within that presence is the very
power of the Lord Himself.
This is why the powers of darkness are dismantled and fall as
in the case of Dagon when God’s presence was set up
and established. Out of that presence the opportunity to draw
out the power is presented to us. In miracle service after miracle
service, as God’s presence comes, in those moments the
healings are easy. It is because the power is within the
presence, and the presence is neutralizing the powers of
darkness that rule the region. When this occurs, people are
freed to be saved, healed, delivered and restored. All because
the presence of God that contains the power has arrived and
the kingdom rule of God is taking over in these moments.
So we should desire the gifts, but yearn for and pursue the
presence of the Lord. A dream that I would like to relate will
help convey this idea. Before I stepped away from the apostolic
center that we had seen raised-up and began to travel
apostolically fulltime into the earth, I dreamed that Jesus
appeared to me. In my dream I suddenly became aware that
the Lord and His presence were close-by. I began to pursue
Him because I desired to receive an anointing from Him. I did
not see Him, I just “sensed” Him. As I pursued what I sensed,
the Lord entered a cave and I followed Him into this cave. As
my chase caused me to enter this cave the Lord’s face
appeared to me. As I saw the Lord’s face, two mantles were
released from Him to me. I knew these mantles were two
anointings that God was giving me as a result of my pursuit. Let
me pause here and explain about what I “knew” in this dream
about these “two mantles”. The Bible says of Jesus in Acts
10:38 that He was anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power:
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God
was with Him.
As a result of the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the anointing
of power, Jesus was able to do good, heal and break every
oppression of the devil that was held against people. We see
these two separate anointings coming on Jesus in the book of
Luke 4:1. We are told that Jesus being “filled” with the Holy
Spirit was led into the wilderness:
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit,
returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
into the wilderness.
We know that the filling of Jesus with the Holy Spirit happened
at the river Jordan as John the Baptist baptized Jesus to fulfill
all righteousness. (Luke 3:21-22) From that moment on Jesus
was baptized with the Holy Spirit. But when did Jesus receive
this second anointing? In Luke 4:14 we are told that as Jesus
exited the wilderness place where He had fasted for forty days
and had been tempted by the devil, He came out in the power
of the Spirit:
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to
Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the
surrounding region.
The reason news and the fame of Him went throughout the
surrounding regions was because of the miracles and signs
and wonders that He did. So Jesus went into the wilderness
filled and full of the Holy Spirit from His River Jordan
experience, but came out of that place of tempting and testing
empowered in the Spirit and by the Spirit for signs and
wonders.
This is the only place in scripture where we have a clue and
insight into Jesus being anointed with both the Holy Spirit and
with power. The anointing with the person of the Holy
Spirit at the river Jordan was a gift from the Father to Jesus.
So it is with us as well. All we have to do is ask for the person
of the Holy Spirit to come and fill our lives and strengthen us
with His companionship. But the anointing of power that came
on Jesus somewhere in the wilderness was a reward for a life
of obedience and passing the test in the wilderness. As Jesus
was faithful to the Father during the wilderness testing, God
empowered Him with the anointing of power. We have been
promised the same thing. In Luke 3:16 we are told that we are
to be baptized and filled with two things as well. We are to be
baptized with the Holy Spirit and with fire:
John answered, saying to all, "I indeed baptize you
with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose
sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is what most of the church has
experienced today in spirit-filled circles. We have an anointing
to bless, but not one that really does damage to the powers of
darkness and brings breakthrough. We have received the gift of
the Holy Spirit, but not necessarily the reward of power. John
the Baptist prophesied that not only would we receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit’s presence and communion, but we would also
receive an anointing of fire. The word fire in the Greek is the
word pur which means lightning. Lightning is a picture of the
power of God.
John the Baptist said in addition to our Holy Spirit anointing, we
would have a lightning anointing as well. This is the power
anointing that Acts 10:38 says that Jesus walked
in. But if we want these same anointings in our life, we will have
to receive them the same way Jesus did. The Holy Spirit
anointing is a gift, but the power or lightning anointing is a
reward for obedience and passing the test of the wilderness.
Once we have these anointings, we are on our way to
functioning in a supernatural realm that can establish kingdom
rule and break the rule of the devil.
This is what I understood as these two mantles floated toward
me in my dream. I now had the two anointings of the Holy Spirit
and of power from the Lord. I remember taking these mantles
as I received them from the Lord and wrapping them around
myself. But then the face of Jesus that had appeared to me
went deeper into the cave. I actually had what I initially was
“chasing” the Lord for, but as Jesus went deeper into the cave I
pursued Him still. He kept going deeper and deeper and
suddenly His whole bodily formed appeared to me as I pursued
Him. I remember Him going and going into the cave and I
labored to draw near to Him.
As I made my way close to Him, suddenly He stopped as I
came near to Him. He turned in His full body expression and
looked at me. I then asked Him a question. I myself was
surprised at what came out of my spirit and then my mouth. I
asked, “What must I do to love you more?” What a question to
ask the Lord, but it must have been the one that needed to be
asked. In response, Jesus looked at me over His shoulder and
spoke one word. He said, “Separation.” I then awoke from my
dream with an awareness that something quite significant had
just happened to me.
I had no sense that Jesus’ word of “separation” had anything to
do with sin in my life. I knew that wasn’t so. As I sought the
Lord and longed to know what the implications of the word
“separation” was, I knew that I had seen my own desires in the
dream manifest. Even after the Lord had granted to me the
mantles and anointings I longed for I had continued to go after
Him. I wanted more than an anointing or gifting, I wanted the
Lord Himself.
This is why I had asked Him the question. I wanted to know
how to love Him more. His response to me was to pull away
from anything that could distract me and go after His presence.
Gifts could and would never satisfy me, but Jesus Himself
would. In addition to this, I also knew that being in “separation”
also involved the apostolic call on my life. When Saul and
Barnabas were commissioned in the apostolic ministry from
Antioch, this was the word that God spoke by His Spirit. Acts
13:2 tells us of the need to separate them so they could go
after the apostolic issues that were needed for kingdom
advancement in the earth:
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy
Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for
the work to which I have called them."
As I contemplated the dream and even the visitation I had
received, I also knew that I had to separate myself from the
rigors of church life and give myself in separation to the Lord
for His apostolic ministry. This was and is the mandate of the
Lord on my life. I have separated myself to His presence and
also as a result to the apostolic that is necessary to break
regions open for the kingdom of God’s sake.
If we are to see the apostolic authority of God released through
the ministry of signs and wonders we must move beyond a gift
mentality and into a presence heart. I am not speaking against
gifts, but rather exhorting that just like the presence of God in
the temple of Dagon caused Dagon to topple and break, so it
will be when we move beyond gifts and into a passion for His
real glory and majesty. At that point, we will not necessarily
have to yell or shout at demons, they will simply flee because
the awesomeness of who Jesus is has been established. In the
next chapters we will discover what the presence of God carries
and some keys to getting it apostolically established in our
midst.

As things were being readied for the beginning of the miracle
service, one of the men who worked with me came into the
room where I was preparing. He informed me that a man who
had suffered a stroke just six days before had been carried into
the meeting place and two men were sitting on either side of
him attempting to hold him in the chair and keep him from
falling out. The victim of this stroke had been greatly affected
and had lost control of the left side of his body as a result of
the paralysis. They had heard about the miracle services and
had literally carried him in and were now holding him in the
chair.
Since his condition was so severe, they had sent this man to
ask that I come and pray for him before the service began. My
response to the question was a firm “No!” Some would say
that this was cruel and arrogant on my part. But what they
would not understand are two very important principles. First
of all, I was not about to pray for this man without the anointing
being present. I understand that in my self I have no power to
heal anyone. The apostolic anointing on my life is what makes
healings and miracles possible. I knew from past experience
that there would come a time in the service when the
awesome and glorious presence of the Lord would come into
the room, and everyone would know He was there. At that
moment what had not been possible before, would be possible
in this
moment of time. This is what the scripture is speaking of in
Luke 5:17. Jesus had been teaching and ministering and the
Bible says that in that moment was a time for people to be
healed:
Now it happened on a certain day, as He was
teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of
the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of
Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the
Lord was present to heal them.
This was the occasion when the men brought the paralytic and
tore a hole in the roof to let him down into the presence of
Jesus. They could not get to him through the door, so they went
to extreme means to embrace the moment when God’s
presence and power was near to heal. They understood
something we must understand as well. When God is near, we
must grasp that moment. The miraculous will happen then,
when it will not happen at other times. This is what I knew when
asked about praying for this paralyzed man before the power of
the Lord was present to heal. I could have prayed for him out of
faith, but I knew there would be a time in the services when the
apostolic authority would be there, because the presence of the
Lord would come with intensity and strength. I didn’t see the
need in going through the motions of praying for him
prematurely and risk doing damage to his faith, my faith and all
the others that would witness the “failure”. As a result, I chose
to wait on the anointing and the timing of the Lord. I am
absolutely dependent upon Him and His presence.
The second reason that I resisted praying for this man
before the service was that the Lord had told me while I
was praying and preparing that there would be notable miracles
during that service and I was to believe Him for them. I actually
ministered out of the Scripture in Acts 3:4 where Peter and
John were used by the Lord to heal the man at the Gate
Beautiful. As they were arrested and brought before the
Sanhedrin court, the court found no way to persecute them
because of the nature of the miracle. Everyone knew of this
man and how he had been born lame. Now here he was
leaping and jumping and praising God in the Temple. These
hypocritical leaders had nothing they could say. We find them
acknowledging this notable miracle in Acts 3:15-16:
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of
the council, they conferred among themselves, saying,
"What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a
notable miracle has been done through them is evident
to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.”
These are the kind of miracles that we need today. Notable
miracles are those that cannot be denied nor explained away.
They force people to come to an awareness of who Jesus is or
to otherwise choose to be willingly ignorant. I knew that God
had spoken to me that He would do something that would
astound all who heard and saw it. I was not about to mess it up
by trying to get the man healed out of the timing of the Lord.
As the service progressed, the glorious presence of the Lord
entered the room. I began to call out words of knowledge as I
sensed the Lord moving among the people and faith arising for
miracles to occur. I called out the effects of
paralysis being healed. I must pause here and let you know that
when the man who worked with me had informed me of the
man and his paralytic state, that I had told him that when the
presence of the Lord began to move, that he was to go pray for
him and agree with him for his healing to take place. My guy
had done just that. He told me later that when the anointing
started to move in the service and people all over the room
were being healed, that he went to this man and the two men
who were holding him in the chair.
He prayed for the paralyzed man and asked him if he felt
anything. The man said “No”. He then prayed for him again and
asked if he felt anything. Again the man said “No”. The one who
worked with me understanding what was happening told the
paralyzed man that they had carried in to “Stand up.” One of the
men with him who was his pastor said, “He can’t stand up.” This
seemed true, but now we were in the presence of the Lord and
what had been impossible before was about to happen. My guy
responded to the pastor with great boldness and said, “I said to
stand up!” Maybe because they were startled by my guy’s
boldness or just flat out afraid of him, the two men got on either
side of the stroke victim and began to struggle to lift him up.
The moment the man begin to attempt to get up the power of
God surged through his body and effects of the stroke were
immediately healed. The paralysis that had afflicted him were
instantly gone. The first time I saw the man he was walking and
running across the platform completely healed and delivered
from the condition. We serve an awesome God.
This miracle greatly affected the region in which he lived.
People still talk about it today because everyone knew this
gentleman and what had happened to him. This and even
greater things can happen when the power and presence of the
Lord is close to heal. Psalms 75:1 tells us that one of the ways
we can know the Lord is near is because of His mighty and
supernatural works:
We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For
Your wondrous works declare that Your
name is near.
When the Lord is near - wonderful and glorious works are
known. I have witnessed that it is the closeness of His presence
that makes these supernatural manifestations possible. It
seems that so few people really are aware of the presence of
the Lord I am speaking of. We have settled for so little when it
comes to the presence and the glory of the Lord. The presence
of the Lord is that which changes us into the likeness of the
Lord. II Corinthians 3:18 tells us that when we are in the
glorious presence of the Lord beholding Him, we are
transformed:
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror
the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the
same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of
the Lord.
The word transformed is the Greek word metamorphoo that
means to change, transfigure or transform. It is the root word
of metamorphosis; the word we use to describe what happens
when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.
Metamorphoo reflects the power of the presence of the Lord.
We can seek out all sorts of self-help gurus or we can get into
the awesome and mighty presence of the Lord and become
what He has made and ordained us to be. In His presence we
are not shaped into what we think we should be, but into what
God’s intentions for us are. We can move from the awkward
and unsatisfying place of a caterpillar into the place of beauty
and splendor of a butterfly. This is a result of the presence of
the Lord.
In Psalms 45:7 we find a prophetic promise made to Jesus
and therefore to all who belong to Him as well. In this verse
we find the Lord promising a place in the anointing and
presence of the Lord greater than the normal:
You love righteousness and hate
wickedness; Therefore God, Your God,
has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.
There is an anointing and presence of the Lord that is above
the normal. Most of God’s people have allowed themselves to
settle for what we have always had. But there is an anointing
that is above the brothers and more than your companions.
How we desperately need these levels of God’s presence and
power with us. It is from these levels of God’s power and
presence that the new levels of signs and wonders occur.
Remember that the power is hidden within the presence. As the
level of His presence arises, so does the level of His power as
well.
Notice the reason for these levels of anointing and presence
that can come on a person’s life. These levels were given to
Jesus and will be given to us because we have “loved
righteousness and hated iniquity”. There must be a separation
from that which grieves the heart of God. I am not a legalist. I
enjoy life and have a good time. Yet there is something to be
said for allowing the heartbeat of the Father to be in us. I would
have to say that much of our powerlessness has its roots in a
lack of holiness. If we are to be trusted with the power of His
presence, it will cost us holiness. Holiness is simply when I
dedicate to the Lord myself wholly. From this dedication my life
is then lived out.
I am like any other person who has ever lived in the flesh.
Everyone has their trouble areas that the devil will seek to
exploit in the flesh. As I was seeking to move out of these
areas and into a new consecration to the Lord, the Lord
whispered something to me. He said to me concerning fleshly
desires that led to sin, “Every time you say ‘no’ to your flesh,
you are telling Me you love me more.” When I heard these
words, they changed my life. I realized that a practical way to
love the Lord was to walk and live holy out of His
empowerment. Resisting fleshly impulses became a joy to my
heart because I knew I was rejoicing His. As a result of this, I
began to sense a new level of the anointing and presence of
the Lord accompanying my life. As I loved righteousness and
hated iniquity, the anointing became greater and manifested
uncommonly upon and in me. If we want the presence that is a
sign of His favor on our lives and lifestyles we must pay the
price joyfully of serving Him wholly and with our whole heart.
As we do new levels of glory and His presence will empower
us.
The reason demonic powers are neutralized by His
presence is because of what the presence of the Lord
carries. In the presence of the Lord, certain qualities are put into
place. One of the main places we see this is again in the Ark of
the Covenant. When God commanded Moses to build the ark
from the specifications he gave, there were three items that
were then placed in the ark. Because the Ark of the Covenant is
a manifestation of God’s presence, these three things are also
in God’s presence when it shows up. Hebrews 9:4 tells us those
three items that resided within the ark:
which had the golden censer and the ark of the
covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were
the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that
budded, and the tablets of the covenant.
The pot of manna that is mentioned speaks of the provision of
the Lord. Within God’s presence is His provision.
Manna was the provision that God gave to the children of
Israel when they were in the wilderness. It was supernatural in
nature and was a manifestation of His love and care over
them. As we develop and nurture God’s presence among us,
within that presence will be His provision for us as well. We
find this reflected in Psalms 132:13-15 when the Lord speaks
of Zion as His dwelling place that He has chosen. The Lord
declares that as He has chosen Zion and puts His presence
there, that certain things will happen as a result of that
blessing and His presence:
For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for
His dwelling place: "This is My resting place forever;
Here I will
dwell, for I have desired it. I will abundantly
bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with
bread.”
The Lord promises from the place of His presence to
abundantly bless the provision of that place. When we are the
place of His presence, our provision is blessed as well. The
favor of His presence blesses us and our stuff.
There is another thought that I want to relate here as well. The
pot of manna speaks not only of our natural provision being
blessed, but also within His presence is provision for our every
need. In Philippians 4:19 we are told that the Lord will supply
our every need:
And my God shall supply all your need according
to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
The supply of our every need is according or flows out of His
riches in glory. Glory is not a reference to heaven. Glory is the
awesome manifest presence of the Lord so strong that within it
is the capacity to supply and meet our every need. Whether it is
a physical, spiritual, mental, relational, financial or emotional
need, within this substance called glory the riches of God are
contained that meet all of them. We see this in the dedication of
Solomon’s temple. II Chronicles 5:13-14 gives us a picture of
the presence of God coming so strongly that it is called the
glory of the Lord. As Solomon finished and dedicated this place
for God to dwell, the cloud of the Lord’s awesome presence
entered:
indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and
singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in
praising and
thanking the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice
with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of
music, and praised the Lord, saying: “For He is good,
For His mercy endures forever,” that the house, the
house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the
priests could not continue ministering because of the
cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of
God.
When God’s presence begins to come as described here, that
is His glory. Within that glory, is every provision to any and
every need we might or could have. Could it be that we don’t
need to be seeking anointings or giftings to meet needs, but
what we need is the awesome glory and presence of the Lord
that contain the riches of who He is? When we get Him, we
get all He is.
One Sunday morning, I was preaching in our apostolic center.
We always had a deep sense of the presence of the Lord
among us. I had heard some speak about a cloud or smoke that
would fill a place in such a tangible way that it could be seen.
As I was ministering this particular morning I began to see
smoke in the back of the sanctuary. It was so thick that I could
barely make out the back wall. The sanctuary seated around
1,500 people, so it was a significant place. As I continued to
preach the smoke became thicker. It was in the spring of the
year in Texas and I thought one of the outside doors had been
left open and someone was burning leaves and the smoke from
the leaves was drifting into the facility. I know this sounds crazy,
but that was my thought process as I was occupied with the
message I was bringing. Suddenly it dawned on me that even
though I was seeing this “smoke” I didn’t
smell any kind of smoke. That is when I realized the glory of
God had entered the sanctuary. I stopped and pointed it out to
the people. As I did it began to diminish. As I went back to
preaching it got thicker again. I knew that even though the Lord
had come in a tangible expression of His glory we weren’t to
make it our focus. It was simply Him showing up to in such an
increasing way that He couldn’t help to be seen.
From that point on, in almost every service that glory would
come. Sometimes it would look like smoke, at other times it was
a cloud and still other times it was a mist so apparent that you
could feel it on your flesh. This may seem strange, but it is what
was happening. In those times, when God’s glory was so
unveiled, people’s needs were being met physically, mentally,
emotionally and financially within families and wherever they
might have been.
Within the glory of God, His riches were being released. This
is because God’s provisions are within His manifest and
glorious presence.
The next item mentioned in the Ark of the Covenant and
therefore the presence of the Lord was Aaron’s budded rod.
The budded rod of Aaron speaks of authority. Remember that
because the children of Israel were constantly murmuring
against the Lord, Moses, and Aaron that the Lord decided to
prove to them the one He had chosen. In Numbers chapter 17
God instructs Moses to take a rod or a dry stick from every
leader of each tribe and put them in the tabernacle where He
dwelt overnight. Verse 5 tells us that the one which budded
supernaturally would be the one that God had chosen:
“And it shall be that the rod of the man whom I choose
will blossom; thus I will rid Myself of the complaints of
the children of Israel, which they make against you."
The end result of this drama was that every rod but Aaron’s
stayed a dry barren stick. Aaron’s rod not only budded but
blossomed and yielded ripe almonds. We see in Numbers 17:8:
Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went
into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of
Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth
buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe
almonds.
Biblically speaking, a rod speaks of authority. Moses used a rod
to deliver the people of Israel from Egypt. (Exodus 4:2-
5) This took authority and power. Jesus said that he would
break the nations with a rod of iron. (Revelation 2:27) From the
authority and power of who Jesus is, He does and will rule over
the nations. When Aaron’s rod sprouted, put forth buds,
produced blossoms, and yielded almonds it was the Lord
signifying His choosing of him as His authority in that setting.
We need to recognize a couple of points here. First of all
anyone who will really carry the authority of the Lord will have
their dry stick come to life from being in His presence. The
command was that Moses put each one of the sticks in the
tabernacle overnight. Anyone who really carries the authority of
the Lord will do so because they have spent night seasons in
the secrecy of God’s presence. It is in this presence during long
and even cold nights of life where
God trusts us with his authority. We all go through night
seasons of life. The question is do we go through them in the
presence of the Lord? Where do we run in those times? If it is
into the presence of the Lord then we can come forth from that
presence with a real authority of God upon us.
The Lord in those places causes that which is natural, our dry
stick, to become that which is supernatural, the budded rod,
with which we will do His will.
The other point I would mention is that the placement of the
rod of Aaron in the Ark of the Covenant conveys to us that from
the presence of the Lord, God’s authority is released and
displayed. Many people think that power and authority are the
same. In fact, they are not. Power actually flows out of
authority. The common Greek word for power is dunamis, the
word we get dynamite from. In other words, dunamis is the
dynamite power of the Lord. It is the release of this power that
heals, delivers, brings breakthrough, as well as other
supernatural acts. The word authority on the other hand is
commonly the Greek word ecousia which means right,
privilege, delegated influence, mastery and freedom. So many
people are seeking power, when they should be seeking
authority. Power flows out of authority. When one has been
endued with real spiritual authority, the authority they carry will
result in power being manifested. This is why the apostles
brought healings, signs and wonders to the earth. It wasn’t the
power, but rather the authority they had received from the Lord
that was the source. As a result of their relationship and
commissioning of the Lord into their delegated place, they
were God’s authority into the earth. From that authority signs
and wonders were revealed. This is why the Bible
makes such clear claims concerning the miracles that
flowed out of their lives. Acts 2:43 is one of many places
where we see this:
Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders
and signs were done through the apostles.
This even further explains why apostolic signs and wonders
establish a kingdom dominion in the earth. They are not just
releasing power but rather releasing authority. Power may
produce a miracle, but authority establishes the kingdom of
God. Signs and wonders done from the realm of authority and
not just power not only heal the sick but dismantle the rulers of
darkness as well.
Within the presence of the Lord is this authority. This is what
Aaron’s rod inside the Ark of the Covenant represents. As
God’s presence is established, suddenly we move into and
function from a realm of authority that demons have to
respond to. Their sphere can begin to be dismantled and
removed not because of the closeness of His presence that
we sense and enjoy, but from the authority of the Lord that is
in that closeness.
To illustrate this point further, there was a situation that
developed in the region where our apostolic center was located.
It came to my attention that two ministers whom I had
supported and helped when they were in dire straits were
planning on coming into the city and starting another church. I
knew they were planning on getting their beginning group from
the church that I led and had apostolic oversight in. This greatly
concerned me. Not just because of the threat that what we had
seen built might be
weakened, but I had a “knowing” in the Lord that this was going
to bring confusion and a “muddying of the waters” to the
kingdom of God in that region. The Lord spoke to me and told
me to “judge this thing as an unrighteous thing and that which
was illegal.” He also told me to “judge only the work, and not to
touch His servants.” I told no one of this and never made it
public. I simply went into the presence of the Lord in my prayer
time and as that sense of Him and who He is came upon me, I
spoke from that presence out of my apostolic authority and did
what I just said. The work that was planned never materialized
because the group they planned on using to start this work
suddenly splintered and fell to pieces. This was a result of my
understanding of the apostolic authority that is in the presence
of the Lord. We can speak from that presence and see
awesome things occur or we can simply release the presence
and the authority contained within it that causes the Dagons to
fall.
Another understanding concerning this authority within this
presence came to me first in a dream and then it began to
function. Before I began to see substantial signs and wonders
happen, I had a dream where I saw the Bible open to chapter 3
of I Samuel. I knew that this was the chapter where Samuel
was called by God to be a prophet of the Lord and the Lord let
“none of his words fall to the ground”. (I Samuel 3:19) In the
dream as the Bible was opened to this book and chapter, I was
told to lay my hands upon it. As I did I felt the power of the
word go into my hands. I was told that in a very short time that
signs and wonders would begin to happen from my life and
ministry. They in fact did. What I have come to understand is
that the Lord released to me an apostolic authority to declare
the power of His word. There are many times in healing and
miracle services, from the unction and anointing of God while
in His presence, that I will release healing in that place of
authority. As this is done people will begin to experience the
healing touch of the Lord in their body.
Sicknesses and diseases that are days old and years old are
instantly healed in that moment. It is because of the authority
of the Lord that is flowing through me from His presence in
that time. Devils, diseases, infirmities and sicknesses fall
under the authority of the King as His presence in among us,
upon us and with us.
The third item within the Ark of the Covenant was the set of
tablets of stone where the Ten Commandments were inscribed.
These are symbolic of the conviction of the Holy Spirit that is in
the presence of the Lord. As God’s presence comes, many
times issues of sin or rebellion are exposed.
We are told that the law, of which the Ten Commandments are
a part, was given so that sin might become exceedingly sinful.
(Romans 7:13) This means that the commands or law of God
brings conviction to our hearts. Conviction is good; in fact it is a
gift from the Lord. Without conviction we would have no sense
of our need for God or a Savior. God out of His mercy and
goodness actually causes us to feel the conviction or need for
a Savior. Romans 2:4 tell us that in fact it is the goodness of
God that deals with our hearts and brings us to repentance:
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness,
forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the
goodness of God leads you to repentance?
So when we are convicted by the Lord, the Lord is showing us
mercy and kindness. His presence carries this conviction. We
know this because when God went walking in the cool of the
day after Adam had eaten of the forbidden fruit; Adam ran from
the presence of the Lord and hid himself. (Genesis 3:8) This
same presence that Adam had enjoyed communion and
fellowship with, now after his sin is bringing a sense of
judgment, conviction, and discomfort. The presence of the Lord
carries this conviction.
Another example of this is found in Matthew 5:23-24 when
Jesus spoke concerning bringing a gift to worship God with and
“there” realizing that there are problems with another person:
“Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there
remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.
First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and
offer your gift.”
Isn’t it interesting that at the altar or the place of worship and
therefore the place of His presence that we suddenly realize
and remember a problem with another person? This is because
it is in the place of His presence that our hearts are made bare.
In that place the secret things are uncovered. This is what
happened to Isaiah when he came into the glorious presence of
the Lord. This already functioning prophet is brought face to
face with the insufficiencies of his life. (Isaiah 6:1-7) In the
presence of the Lord he cries out, “I am undone”. This is
another way of saying, “I am convicted and at the end of
myself”. This is
what the presence of the Lord does, because in His
presence there is conviction.
Some things happen in God’s presence that will not otherwise
occur. As we make His presence our desire, provision for every
need will be seen, authority will be unleashed, and conviction
will come. That which seems hard and impossible will not only
be possible, but we will be amazed at the ease in which it
occurs. From His presence, the kingdom of God and the
dominion of the Lord is known.

The teenage girl had been injured in a car accident. She was a
member of the church’s youth group and every one knew her in
this local house. The accident had caused quite a stir because
of the circumstances surrounding it. We were to later discover
about the accident that these young people were out doing
things they shouldn’t have been doing. The car they were
riding in had gone out of control and had impacted a tree
beside the road. The young lady was in a backslidden state
whereas not long before she had been diligently after the Lord.
As a result of the accident, her pelvic bone had been broken
which is a very painful injury that can be incapacitating. She
had spent some time in the hospital as her distraught parents
thanked God that her injury though severe was not life-
threatening.
Our monthly healing was held within a very short time of the
accident. This young lady was in attendance. She could only
maneuver with the aid of crutches. She was in much pain and
as a result of the break in her pelvis she could not put weight
on her legs. As the presence of the Lord began to move in the
services, everyone could sense the power and life of the Lord.
Words of knowledge and decrees began to be sent forth as
the hovering presence of God moved in the place. Suddenly
people began to line up who had been healed of various
issues in their bodies. They began to come across the platform
and give account of
what the Lord had done for them. As this was happening, I
turned to see this young lady walking up the steps leading to
the platform weeping uncontrollably. One of my workers who
helped in these services was carrying the crutches that just a
few minutes before were necessary for her to walk. Microphone
in hand, he began to declare to everyone what the Lord had
graciously done for the young woman.
Realizing the moment we were in, I proclaimed to this
precious girl to run. She took off and began to run across the
platform for all to see completely healed of the broken pelvis
in a moment of time that would have otherwise taken weeks
and even months to mend. We truly serve a wonderful and
gracious God.
I mentioned that this young lady was weeping very strongly
while all this was happening. Her weeping was not only
connected to her healing, but from the revelation of how much
God really loved her. She had been backslidden and that had
added to the reason she was in the position to be injured in the
first place. She was not only hurt physically, but she felt
condemned as well for her lifestyle and being away from the
Lord. In one moment of grace, our Lord touched and
miraculously healed her body, but also confirmed His love to
her. She was overcome with the goodness of God and how
much He cared for her. This is our Lord. This is who He is. He
doesn’t heal us because we deserve it. He heals us because of
His mercy and grace that flows from His cross.
If we are to see an apostolic release of dominion through signs
and wonders, we must get a fresh revelation of the cross and
what Jesus did for us on it. The cross was a legal transaction.
It is legal tender for any and every need that
mankind can have. Just like we use our dollar as legal tender to
purchase what we want and need, the cross is that legal tender
for us. On the cross, Jesus bought and paid for everything we
have need of. This includes salvation, deliverance from poverty,
peace, healing and any other need that man can have. The
Apostle Peter had a deep awareness of this. II Peter 1:3
declares to us what has already been given to us:
as His divine power has given to us all things that
pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of
Him who called us by glory and virtue.
Everything that we need to live this life powerfully, successfully,
and in victory has already been given to us from the cross of
Jesus. The fact is that most Christians are still asking the Lord
for things He has already given to us. When Jesus died on the
cross He purchased everything we need for this life. In regards
to healing, this is why Peter also declared in I Peter 2:24 that
we are already healed by the stripes they laid upon Jesus at His
sacrifice:
who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree,
that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness
by whose stripes you were healed.
Peter picked this up from the prophet Isaiah who declared that
we are healed by the stripes and beatings that Jesus took for
us at His crucifixion. Isaiah 53:5 speaks about what Jesus
would do for us:
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was
upon Him, And by His stripes we are
healed.
Isaiah says that we are healed. As Isaiah looked prophetically
through the ages to what Jesus would do for us on the cross,
he saw our healing being purchased for us. Looking forward to
the cross, Isaiah saw our healing being secured by Jesus’
sacrifice on the cross, Peter on the other hand looking back at
the cross saw it already done. This is why Isaiah said we are
healed, while Peter said we were healed. In other words, when
Jesus died for us on the cross He secured our healing and
health for us. We do not have to ask Him or beg Him to heal us.
As far as He is concerned, He has already paid the price for
our healing and deliverance. Our struggle of faith is not to
convince the Lord to heal us, but rather to step into what He
has already done for us. In the next chapter, we will seek to
understand how to do this through the ministry of the Holy
Spirit.
If we are going to receive healing, but more importantly, if we
are to see the apostolic release of healing occur, we must
understand what Jesus did for us on the cross. Paul ministered
the power and authority of God in healing from the virtue of the
cross. I Corinthians 2:2-4 tells us what happens when the cross
is preached and emphasized:
For I determined not to know anything among you
except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in
weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my
speech and my preaching
were not with persuasive words of human wisdom,
but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.
When Paul limited himself to Jesus Christ and His crucifixion
and the preaching of what flowed from that place, the
demonstration of the Spirit and of power occurred. Could it be
that we have had so little apostolic power and demonstration
because we have sought to get to witty with our preaching? As
Paul revealed the revelation of whom Jesus is and what He did
on the cross, signs and wonders occurred. All power flows from
the transaction that took place at the cross. Jesus, His body,
and His blood were the price paid for us to see the power of
God released. The cross is the basis of all supernatural
experiences that come from the Lord. Without the cross,
demonstrations of His power cannot occur.
When we by revelation understand the cross and healing, we
can pray and believe the Lord for all to be healed.
Suddenly, I do not have to ask the question of whether the Lord
wants to heal a person or not. Just like Jesus wants all to be
saved, He desires all to be healed. Without this confidence, it is
impossible to see apostolic healing power released. The same
atoning work of the Lord that purchased our salvation, also
bought our healing. Isaiah chapter 53:4 tells us the seriousness
of the Lord concerning healing. Not only do we see in the
atoning work of the Lord His stripes that heal, but we also see
that Jesus carried away and bore away every sickness and
disease that can afflict us:
Surely He has borne our
griefs And carried our
sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him
stricken, Smitten by God,
and afflicted.
This verse has been poorly translated in the Old Testament. It
leaves the impression that Jesus’ main concern was with our
sadness or depression. He is concerned for that and His
sacrifice on the cross meets that need too, but this is not what
this passage of scripture is speaking to. The word griefs is the
Hebrew word chifly which means malady, disease and
sickness. This passage is clearly speaking of that which is
physical in nature. The word sorrows in this verse is the
Hebrew word mak ob which means pain. This verse is telling us
that when Jesus hung on the cross in addition to the stripes He
took at the beating post for our healing, He also took away our
sickness, diseases, maladies, and pains. The cross was and is
about healing. As sure as the cross purchases and redeems
our souls for all eternity, the cross also provides physical
healing for all who dare to grab hold of what Jesus did for us.
To further verify this reality as we transition into the New
Testament, we find Isaiah 53:4 referenced not to spiritual
salvation but to physical healing. We find in Matthew 8:16- 17
that as Jesus began His ministry, He healed all who were sick.
There was a reason why He healed all. He was unveiling and
revealing that He was the one that Isaiah had spoken of:
When evening had come, they brought to Him many
who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the
spirits with a word,
and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
"He Himself took our infirmities
And bore our sicknesses."
When Isaiah 53:4 was translated from the Old Testament to the
New Testament and from Hebrew to Greek, the real meaning of
what was being said was seen. When Jesus came to give His
life on the cross, it wasn’t just to get us to heaven with eternal
life. It wasn’t just to forgive us of our sins. It wasn’t just to bring
us peace. When Jesus died on the cross it was to also heal us
from sickness, disease and any torment that the devil would
seek to destroy us with. This is why Acts 10:38 tells us that God
anointed Jesus to break and destroy the oppressiveness of
sickness. The devil uses sickness to destroy people’s lives.
Jesus came to break that unclean and unrighteous thing by His
work on the cross:
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God
was with Him.
Sickness is a tool of the devil to control, handicap, afflict and
torment people. Through sickness, Satan takes away
people’s future, dreams, and hopes. Jesus, through the
cross, came to give them back. This is why by His death, He
doesn’t just get us to heaven He also heals our bodies and
sets us free from any and every demonic power.
This has been the intention of the Father from the very
beginning. To be able to see this clearly let me point out the
whole idea behind what we call communion or the Lord’s
Supper. We know that this activity is a celebration of the
revelation of what Jesus did for us on the cross. In communion,
we celebrate the blood and body of Jesus that was offered for
us on the cross. Within these two issues we see the intent of
the Lord. The blood that Jesus sacrificed is for our forgiveness
while the body is for our healing. To make the point more clear,
the blood is not for our healing, nor is the body for our
salvation. The body in fact is for our physical healing, while the
blood is for our spiritual dimension. So often we don’t stop and
consider these things.
We must realize the significance of what we are doing when we
partake of these elements. One of the biggest problems among
God’s people is the acting out of ritual and not revelation.
Because the people in the church of Corinth were partaking of
communion out of ritual and not revelation, they were not
getting what was available to them. I Corinthians 11:27-30 tells
us concerning the communion meal of the Lord that the
Corinthian church had shifted into a ritual partaking of these
elements rather than from a revelatory mindset:
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of
the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the
body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine
himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of
the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy
manner eats and drinks judgment to
himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason
many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.
We are told that the eating and drinking of the body and blood
of the Lord through communion is done in an “unworthy
manner” when we do it without discernment of His body. In
other words, we are not partaking from revelation. Notice that
because of this error, people were physically weak, some were
sick and some had even died. Most will teach that partaking in
an “unworthy manner” is eating and drinking with sin in our
lives. I will not debate that this can be an issue. But what we
see being communicated in these verses is that eating and
drinking unworthily is about doing it without discernment or
revelation.
This clearly shows us that we must understand by revelation in
our spirits what the body and blood of Jesus is for and what it
does. It also further confirms that the healing power of the Lord
is wrapped up in the work of Jesus on the cross. Otherwise why
would Paul connect healing and/or the lack of it to an
inappropriate taking of the Lord’s Supper? Healing flows from
the power of the cross of Jesus Christ. We must know how to
discern rightly the body that Jesus offered for us on the cross
so that we can receive and release healing in the name of the
Lord.
This takes us back to the body and blood that is celebrated in
communion. Again the blood is for our forgiveness while the
body is for our healing. We know that the blood is for our
forgiveness because Colossians 1:14 tells us:
in whom we have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins.
When Jesus spilt His blood it was for our forgiveness. Because
of the blood of Jesus, my sins are washed away. I have been
fully restored to relationship and fellowship with the Father
because of the blood of Jesus. Because of the blood, I have a
covenant with the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Within that
covenant is healing, but it is the body that Jesus offered that
purchased my healing. The blood brings me into eternal
fellowship and spiritual union with the Lord, but the body of
Jesus that we celebrate is for my healing.
Hebrews 10:5 speaks of the body that was prepared for
Jesus to live in on planet earth:
Therefore, when He came into the world, He
said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.”
The Father went to great efforts to get a body prepared for
Jesus to live in on planet earth and then to offer on the cross as
a sacrifice for our healing. All the way back in Genesis, God
promised Eve that her seed would crush the head of Satan.
God then raised up a man named Abraham to produce a nation
for a woman named Mary to be born into. This woman then
was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and the body of Jesus that
He was to live in and offer as a sacrifice formed in her womb.
The devil sought to stop all of this many times. We see this
begin through the killing of Abel by Cain because he thought
one of them might be the promised seed. (Genesis 4:8) He
raised up a man named Haman to try and extinguish the Jewish
race from planet earth to stop this body from coming forth.
(Esther 3) He moved on Pharaoh to kill all the children in his
day to stop this process. (Exodus 1:16) Herod then sent forth a
decree after the birth of Jesus to destroy this one who would
come in bodily form. (Matthew 2:16) On and on there were
attempts to keep Jesus from coming in the flesh to have a body
to sacrifice. This should tell us how committed God was to
getting Jesus into the earth in a body. Jesus’ body was not just
so He could function on earth as the Son of Man. Jesus’ body
was ultimately prepared to offer as a sacrifice for our healing.
For the Lord to go to all these lengths to get Jesus here in a
body so that He could be offered for our healing should tell us
that God is even more committed to our health and healing than
we are. We don’t have to convince Him to heal us. He has
already determined to do it and made every provision for it.
Therefore, we can move with great confidence in receiving and
releasing apostolic healing power and authority.
Now back to the intention of the Father concerning healing for
us from the body of the Lord from the beginning. When the
children of Israel were in bondage in Egypt, God sent a
deliverer to them named Moses. As the delivering process
continued, the Lord instituted something called Passover on
the night before their exodus from Egypt. As a result of the
Passover being observed, the children of Israel were spared
and protected from the judgment that fell on the nation of Egypt
as the firstborn of
the land were destroyed. We know that as the people of Israel
faithfully applied the blood of the Passover lamb killed for each
household, the destroyer passed-over their homes and none of
them were touched or harmed. In addition to the blood being
applied that forbid the destroying force from touching them, the
carcass of the lamb that had been slain was roasted in fire and
eaten by the whole household. We must be aware that
Passover is a prophetic picture of the cross of Jesus where the
Lamb of God was slain for the needs of man. We see from this
prophetic picture of Passover both the body and the blood of
the lamb being appropriated into the lives of God’s people. All
of this is described in Exodus 12:7-11:
And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the
two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where
they eat it. Then they shall eat the flesh on that night;
roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter
herbs they shall eat it. Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all
with water, but roasted in fire its head with its legs and
its entrails. You shall let none of it remain until morning,
and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with
fire. And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist,
your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand.
So you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover.
The children of Israel were to make absolutely sure that all the
blood and all the body of this Passover lamb was completely
consumed. The blood was for their salvation from that which
was out to destroy them. The body or the flesh of the lamb that
they were to eat was for their healing. We know this by joining
to these verses revelation from
Psalms 105:36-37. In these verses we see three things that
the blood and the body of this lamb accomplished:
He also destroyed all the firstborn in
their land, The first of all their strength.
He also brought them out with silver and
gold, And there was none feeble among
His tribes.
As the blood was applied, they were spared as the firstborn of
all those not protected by the blood were destroyed. The spirit
of poverty was destroyed as they spoiled the Egyptians and
departed with silver, gold, and riches. We also see that none
were sick or diseased among the millions that were extradited
from slavery. In fact there was not one feeble or weak among
them. How could this be among millions of slaves who had lived
in unbelievably harsh conditions and cruelty? The reason none
were feeble was that the body of the roasted lamb, whose
foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, released
healing into millions of Jews all at once. The blood brought
salvation to them, while the body brought healing into their own
bodies and not a feeble nor weak one was in their midst.
What a wonderful Lord He is.
I always think about the movie the “The Ten Commandments”
that is shown on television usually during the Easter season.
Cecil B. DeMille directed this masterpiece and it has blessed
many. During the scene when the millions of Jews were
leaving Egypt after more than 400 years of cruelty and
slavery, a little boy is seen leading a blind man out by the
hand. This seems so precious and special as the moment is
being embraced by all. The only problem is it is not true.
There was no blind
man because we are clearly told there was not a feeble one
among them much less somebody blind. The reason for this is
that when they put the roasted lamb between their teeth and
began to chew and digest it, the healing power of God from that
lamb’s body flooded the multitudes and they were all healed.
The command was that they were to apply the blood for their
salvation and to eat the lamb for their healing with a belt on
their waist, sandals on their feet and a staff in their hand. In
other words they were to eat this initial Passover with an
expectation that they were going somewhere that night. This
night was different from all the other nights they had spent in
Egypt. This first Passover night, by the body and the blood of
the lamb, they were leaving their slavery and walking into a new
experience of salvation, healing and prosperity. But they had to
do it in faith. They had to believe and act like something was
going to happen when they partook of the Lord’s Passover.
Again, please remember anytime you see Passover mentioned
in Scripture, it is a prophetic symbol of the cross of Jesus
Christ. Passover was the place where the body and the blood of
the lamb were given for our complete deliverance. As we
posture ourselves to minister healing or to receive healing it
must be from revelation of the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross
is the basis of all healing and demonstration of the power of
God.
If this worked in the shadow of what Jesus would be, how
much more should it work for us now that we have received
the substance of Jesus’ sacrifice? Just like Jesus’ cross
purchased our salvation, so His cross purchased our healing
as well. His blood and body sacrificed for us is enough to
make us well and give us eternal life. To be able to accept and
function in this we must do it not from rote,
ritual or formality, but from revelation. As we put our faith in the
body and blood of Jesus Christ, we are then in the right place to
receive and release the healing flow of the Lord. Because it all
flows from the cross, it is absolute. In other words, we don’t
have to question whether it is God’s will to heal anymore than
we have to question whether it is God’s will to save. The same
sacrifice purchased it all for us. If it isn’t God’s will to heal all,
then neither is it God’s will to save all. This is true because all
of this flows from the same sacrifice. When we by revelation
reach out and grab hold of the provisions of the cross, Jesus’
healing flow moves in us, toward us and through us.
Stop being beset by doubt and unbelief concerning God’s will to
heal. He desires all to be saved and all to be healed. Our
struggle is not to catch God on a good day - then maybe He will
heal us. Our struggle is to step into what Jesus has bought and
paid for us. Stop questioning the strength of Jesus’ work on the
cross. I always ask people if Jesus’ sacrifice is not strong
enough to get us healed in this life then how can we believe it is
strong enough to get us to heaven in the next one. The fact is
what Jesus did for us on the cross is powerful and complete.
Let us stop giving doubt and unbelief room to operate and grab
hold of the provisions of the Lord’s work. We will be healed and
see many others healed as well.
I
It was a normal Sunday morning service, as normal as our
Sunday morning services could be. Things had radically
changed. I remember as I began to move in this apostolic
power of healing that a lady in the church who was quite
prophetic had a dream about me. It seemed in her dream that I
worked in a department store and had been working in the
cosmetic jewelry department selling the fake stuff but I had
been transferred to the real jewelry department where I was
now selling the real jewels. That was interesting to me
because it was actually what I felt like since all this had begun
to happen. It wasn’t that I had been deceiving anyone before.
It was just that in comparison to what I had been functioning
in, what was going on now was an entirely different level. I had
indeed been entrusted by the Father with that which was really
valuable and precious.
On this particular day, the healing presence of the Lord came
into our midst after I had ministered the word. This is not
unusual, but what was about to happen was. A girl about 10
years of age came forward after I had a word concerning
someone’s legs being healed. This little girl came up with a
massive brace around her waist and down both legs. The
braces had been recently placed on her to cause her legs to
grow straight. Her legs were growing crooked and her feet
were turned horribly out. As she came
forward with her father, I prayed over her legs and told the
workers to take the braces off and then moved on to other
people who were responding to the Lord. I had not gone far
when my attention was drawn back to this little girl now
standing with the braces off and her legs completely and totally
straight for the first time in her life. The people in the church
were astounded at what the Lord was doing in the here and
now and not just what He was reported to have done in the
past. These miracles were not happening in a third world
country but right here in the United States of America. We really
do serve a mighty God who does all things well and is the same
yesterday, today and forever.
This miracle and all others are done by the power of the Holy
Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit not one miracle of the Lord will
occur. We must realize and know this. The problem is that as
much as we know about this person called Holy Spirit, we so
often are ignorant about His operation and how He moves.
Even though Jesus was the Son of God manifested on earth
from Mary’s womb, not one miracle occurred through Him until
He encountered the Holy Spirit at the river Jordan. As I have
shared in a previous chapter, not only did Jesus receive the
person of the Holy Spirit at the Jordan River, but He began to
move in the power of the Spirit after the wilderness temptation.
Jesus was baptized and immersed in the Holy Spirit and in
power. Luke 4:14 tells us this is when the miracles began to
take place:
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee,
and news of Him went out through all the surrounding
region.
The reason news went out concerning Him was because of the
miracles and healings that were happening. Jesus became
famous as a result of the power, authority, and anointing of the
Holy Spirit that was upon and within His life. Matthew 4:23-25
tells us how much acclaim Jesus received at this juncture of His
life and ministry:
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and
healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease
among the people. Then His fame went throughout all
Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were
afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those
who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics;
and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him
from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea,
and beyond the Jordan.
Jesus who had been little known or unknown suddenly was
thrust into the spotlight of society because of the Holy Spirit and
His power. It is the Holy Spirit and His power that Jesus
performed miracles with so shall it be with us.
Before I go any further let me explain a very basic yet profound
truth about the way this works. In the last chapter I shared how
the cross of Jesus is what provided our basis for healing and
ministering the healing authority of the Lord. What Jesus did on
the cross 2000 years ago is forever settled. The devil and those
he controls played right into the hands of the Lord. I Corinthians
2:7-8 tells us that Satan and his entourage were blinded to the
mystery of the Lord:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the
hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages
for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age
knew; for had they known, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory.
When Jesus died on the cross and offered Himself for us, the
devil did not understand what was happening. He was a willing
and active part of crucifying the Lord of Glory and allowing Him
to fulfill His divine destiny. So what the Lord did for us on the
cross is forever established. Because the devil knows that he
made the blunder of the ages, his next best alternative is to cut
off the effects of the cross from reaching people and God’s
creation.
Jesus has in fact bought and paid for all that we need, want
and desire. The cross is a done deal and all things are finished.
But the effect of the cross can only be felt and received through
the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We see this in John 16:13-15:
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He
will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His
own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and
He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He
will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things
that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He
will take of Mine and declare it to you”
Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would come and take what
belongs to Jesus, (remember that healing belongs to Jesus
because He paid for it on the cross), and would show it or
reveal it to us. One of the main jobs of the Holy Spirit is to
unveil and deliver to us what Jesus has bought and paid for.
Only through the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit can we
receive the benefits and powers that come from the cross. The
devil knows this, so He has sought to cut us off and make us
ignorant of the Spirit and His operations. This is why Paul wrote
to the Corinthian church in I Corinthians 12:1 and exhorted
them to not be ignorant of the Spirit and His operations:
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want
you to be ignorant.
The ploy of the devil is to keep us in the dark concerning the
Holy Spirit and how He does things. The Holy Spirit will take
the virtues of the cross and through revelation and the gifts of
the Spirit apply those virtues into our lives. But He cannot do
this, if room is not made for Him to operate, which is the case
in most settings today. At best, limited movement is granted to
the Holy Spirit and therefore limited application of the effects of
the cross are known and experienced. This is why we are told
to be very careful about grieving, quenching, insulting or
otherwise wounding and offending the Spirit. Only through the
Holy Spirit can the power of what Jesus bought and paid for
become accessible to us. Without Him we are cut off and the
cross and what it accomplished becomes unreachable to us.
In a very real sense the Holy Spirit is God’s delivery-system for
us. I do not say this to diminish the Holy Spirit from His place of
being God. I only put it this way to help us see the function of
the Spirit and how much we need Him to
apply the provisions of the cross into our lives. James 4:5
makes a statement that brings some revelation to us:
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The
Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
The Holy Spirit is yearning jealously over the purposes of God
in us and through us. The Holy Spirit is here to possess what
the blood has bought. We have been bought by the blood and
the work of Jesus on the cross. The Spirit is here to bring into
reality all that Jesus paid for. He is jealously at work to
accomplish this. He will bring all the substance of the cross
into reality. To do this, He must deliver to us what Jesus
bought and paid for and also deliver us to Him as that which
has also been bought.
Let me explain it to you this way. My wife, Mary, sometimes
watches one of the cable-television shopping networks
where all sorts of goods can be purchased.
When she sees something on television that she has to have,
she picks up the phone and calls the number listed. She then
tells the person who answers the item and quantity she wants.
That person then takes down and runs her credit card number.
At the moment the credit card is processed, we become the
proud owners of what was just purchased. We do not yet
possess it, but we do own it legally. For us to possess it,
someone will pull the item or items from the stock at the
warehouse, package it up, put it on a truck, take it to the airport,
put it on the plane, fly it
to our city, take it off the plane, place it on a another truck and
eventually the package will arrive at our home where the
delivery person rings the door bell. Mary will then sign for the
item that we have owned since the initial phone
call, but now we possess it. The issue we must see is that even
though we owned it and had legal rights to it, without a delivery-
system we could not possess it.
This is what the Holy Spirit does. He takes what Jesus bought
and paid for, and delivers it through the anointings He produces
and the giftings He releases into the lives of His people.
Without the Holy Spirit what Jesus bought and paid for, what we
have legal rights to - cannot and will not be ours until we
understand and are not ignorant of the Holy Spirit and His
ways. Once we learn His ways, we can yield and come into
agreement with Him and be able to receive the deliveries from
the cross that the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit yearn for us to
have. Until this happens, we may own it legally, but we cannot
possess it. This is where much of the body of Christ is and the
Lord is seeking to bring us out of that place and into the place
of possession and not just ownership.
To experience this whole issue of possession and not just
ownership we should learn some things about dwelling places.
In John 14:16 we can see the Lord Jesus teaching His early
disciples about the coming of the Holy Spirit. This was a new
thought for the disciples. They couldn’t understand how Jesus
could go away and the person of the Holy Spirit could come
and take His place on planet earth. Jesus actually told them in
John 16:7 that it would be to their advantage that He would
leave and the Spirit would come to be with them instead:
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your
advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the
Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send
Him to you.”
Jesus understood that He was limited in the body of flesh that
He resided in. Yet he also knew that when the Holy Spirit came
that lived in and with Him took up residence in the disciples,
those limitations would be lifted. Until the time of Jesus, the
Holy Spirit had not been poured out on all flesh as Jesus
promised He would be. He had dwelt with only a handful of
prophets, priests, and kings. But Jesus came to die on the
cross so that the Holy Spirit could come in fullness. The reason
the Holy Spirit had not been able to come in fullness was
because there were none clean enough for Him to take up
residence in them. Jesus was the first that had this place in the
Father, so the Spirit could dwell in Him. Hebrews 10:4 says it
was impossible for the sacrifices required of the law to take sin
away:
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats
could take away sins.
All the blood of bulls and goats could do was roll the sin and
therefore the anger of the Lord off the people for a year. Every
year another sacrifice of these shadow offerings were
performed to simply keep the people free from sin and its
consequences. This was to be performed until the substance
came which was Jesus with His blood and perfect offering.
Once this happened there was no more need for the blood
sacrifice of animals because the perfect had come by the
offering of Jesus on the cross.
Every year when the shadow offerings were made, the people
were brought into a fresh awareness of their guilt before God.
This carried shame and condemnation in it and a sense of
unworthiness. But when the blood of Jesus was
shed once and for all, a perfect sacrifice was made that didn’t
require this revisiting of shame and guilt. Instead, the people
were cleansed from the inside out. They were completely
washed and free from all shame, condemnation, and guilt. They
became new creations in Christ Jesus. Once this perfect
offering was in place that perfectly cleansed, the Holy Spirit had
a suitable dwelling place in which to live. We see this principle
in Leviticus 14:14-17:
Then he shall kill the lamb in the place where he kills the
sin offering and the burnt offering, in a holy place; for as
the sin offering is the priest's, so is the trespass offering.
It is most holy. The priest shall take some of the blood of
the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it on the tip
of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right
foot. And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and
pour it into the palm of his own left hand.
Then the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is
in his left hand, and shall sprinkle some of the oil with
his finger seven times before the Lord. And of the rest
of the oil in his hand, the priest shall put some on the tip
of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right
foot, on the blood of the trespass offering.
The Priest would apply the blood to a cleansed leper by putting
it on the right ear, the right thumb and the big toe of the right
foot. Then once this was done, he would take the oil and put it
on top of the blood on the right ear, the right thumb and the
right big toe. We have a very clear picture of what would
happen by the sacrifice of Jesus and the anointing of the Holy
Spirit. This prophetic portrayal is
declaring to us that the Spirit will only anoint what the blood has
cleansed. When someone is free and cleansed by the blood of
Jesus, the Holy Spirit is then liberated to come and inhabit,
anoint, and empower that person with the presence of who He
is. This is why Jesus said the Spirit could not come until Jesus
had gone back to heaven. Jesus’ returned to heaven only after
He had completed the atoning work that the Father had sent
Him to do. At that point, Jesus could ascend back to the Father,
sit down at His right hand and send the Holy Spirit back to now
indwell these new cleansed, purified and perfected believers by
the blood. This is exactly what happened on the day of
Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. The world changed forever on that
day. These believers began a journey of moving from one
dwelling place in God to another from that day forward. Let me
explain.
In John 14:1- 3, we have a very familiar yet very
misinterpreted passage of Scripture. This scripture is referred
to at funeral after funeral without the realization that this isn’t a
passage to die from, but one rather to live life from powerfully:
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God,
believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many
mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go
to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come again and receive you to
Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
The whole issue of Jesus going away from them and then
returning to receive them to Himself has been greatly
misunderstood. Jesus was not speaking of leaving and
coming again at His second coming - which by the way I do
believe in. Jesus was speaking of His leaving and coming back
through the person of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. In
John 14:16-18, we see this clearly defined.
Jesus tells His disciples that the leaving and the coming is
about the Holy Spirit and His ministry being established in and
through their lives:
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you
another Helper, that He may abide with you forever
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you
know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I
will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
Jesus declares that the coming of the Holy Spirit would cause
them not to be left alone, because He was coming to them.
How much clearer can it be? We see this same idea echoed
again in John 16:16 as Jesus continues His discourse on the
Holy Spirit and His ministry and purpose in the earth:
“A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a
little while, and you will see Me, because I go to
the Father."
Again, Jesus is emphasizing to the disciples that even though
He is leaving, they will see Him again because He is going to
the Father. He was letting them know that when the Holy Spirit
descended and empowered them, He would reveal the glories
of Jesus to them. He was not speaking about a second coming,
but rather the coming of the Spirit of God into their lives.
Now back to John 14:1-3. If Jesus in fact was not speaking
about His second coming to earth, but rather the coming of the
Holy Spirit who would reflect and reveal Him to those He
empowered, then what is all this about a prepared place and
the Father’s house Jesus said that in His Father’s house were
many mansions? The Greek word for mansions is mone which
means a staying, residence or abode. Mone also means a
dwelling. So Jesus was telling His disciples that He was going
to prepare a place for them in the Father’s house. The Father’s
house is the dimension in which God lives Himself, which is the
spirit realm. So within the realm of the spirit are many dwelling
places. Jesus was going away to prepare these dwelling places
for His disciples and then was coming back through the Holy
Spirit to establish them in the dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Notice also that there are many mansions or dwellings in the
dimension of which the Father lives.
So what we see and conclude is that when the Holy Spirit came
on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were ushered into a
spiritual place of dwelling as they were filled with and anointed
by the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 tells us that when the Holy Spirit
arrived on this day that the disciples were all filled with His
power and presence:
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
We know that from this filling Peter preached one simple
message and 3,000 people came to know the Lord. (Acts 2:41)
Peter preached from the dwelling place that the infilling of the
Spirit had given him. As a result, the authority was so great that
people’s hearts were convicted and convinced
and they were saved. When we are granted a mansion or
dwelling place in the Spirit from that place great authority flows.
When we are given the dwelling place of the Lord that Jesus
has prepared for us, we are seated in that place and from that
place through the anointing we administer the authority of the
Lord in the earth. This is what Paul meant when he said we are
seated together in heavenly places in Him in Ephesians 2:6
which declares that we have been raised and seated with Him
in these places:
and raised us up together, and made us sit together
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
From these seated places we exercise the power, authority,
and anointing of the Lord in given issues.
We must also be aware that Jesus said there were many
mansions or places of dwelling that we can enter into. Paul
said that there were heavenly places - plural - where we could
sit down. In other words, as we grow and mature we are
granted by the infilling of the Holy Spirit spheres of authority
and anointing that increase and/or are different in nature and
function.
When the first 120 were filled by the Holy Spirit, Peter preached
the message from that dwelling place that convicted and
converted 3,000 people. As things progress we see other
places where the disciples were filled or stepped into a new
dwelling place to function from in the Father. In Acts chapter 4
after Peter and John have been arrested for healing the lame
man at the gate Beautiful, taken before the Sanhedrin court,
rebuked, and then
released, they return to the church and tell what happened.
They then begin to lift up their voice and cry for God’s healing
and miracle power to be released in them and through them in
verses 29 through 31:
Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your
servants that with all boldness they may speak Your
word, "by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that
signs and wonders may be done through the name of
Your holy Servant Jesus.
And when they had prayed, the place where they were
assembled together was shaken; and they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of
God with boldness.
As they prayed and cried for God’s signs and wonders, the
place where they were was shaken and they were filled. In
other words, as they prayed God granted them another dwelling
in His Spirit. From that place they went forth, spoke the word
boldly and signs and wonders increased and grew. We must
desire and look for those new places of dwelling in the Spirit.
From those places miracles occur, not just occasionally but
regularly because we are in the dwelling place of the Spirit.
There are several other places in Scripture that we could look,
but let me share just one more. We find Paul on his initial
apostolic journey in Acts chapter 13. As he journeys with
Barnabas they encounter Sergus Paulus who was a proconsul
of an area. As they began to share the gospel with him, a
sorcerer named Elymas begins to resist them and seeks to
turn the proconsul from the truth. Paul takes
all he can and then is filled with the Spirit. Verses 9 through
12 tell us the remainder of the story:
Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy
Spirit, looked intently at him and said, "O full of all
deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of
all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the
straight ways of the Lord? And now, indeed, the hand of
the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing
the sun for a time." And immediately a dark mist fell on
him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him
by the hand. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw
what had been done, being astonished at the teaching
of the Lord.
Paul stepped into a dwelling place of the Spirit and from that
place issued a judgment against that which was resisting the
purposes of God. As we step into these dwelling places and
become mightily anointed of the Lord, we will be able to
dismantle every work of darkness that dares to resist God’s
kingdom purposes. This is what Paul spoke of in II Corinthians
10:5 concerning the weapons of our warfare. We are told that
not only can every thought be captured, but any high thing that
dares to exalt itself against the will of God and the knowledge
of God can be pulled down:
casting down arguments and every high thing that
exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing
every thought into captivity to the obedience of
Christ.
When Paul dealt with this sorcerer he was pulling down that
which was seeking to exalt itself against the
knowledge of God. But he could only do it from the dwelling
place of the Father in the Spirit. In that place, Paul was
anointed and had authority to speak a word of judgment and
see anything and everything that dared to exalt itself fall. We
must know how to move into these places in the Spirit. When
we do, demonic things are dismantled, sickness and disease
is destroyed, people are transported out of darkness and into
light because of the place we are living in and functioning
from.
There are many mansions or dwelling places for us in the Spirit.
As we learn how to access them we will experience the power
and glory of God and see the kingdom established, the sick
healed and even society transformed. In the next chapter we
will see what it takes to move into these dwelling of God by and
through His Spirit.

As a result of the apostolic authority and anointing that began
to flow through our ministry, we were invited to go into certain
parts of the nation and do healing and miracle services. We
had scheduled a couple of healing services in a coastal area of
Texas. As we went into this area, we were expecting to see the
Lord move in a mighty way. As the services progressed that
beginning night, I remember preaching on the anointing of the
Spirit. As the healing and miracle anointing began to be
released, I spoke against deafness. I had no awareness of who
was in the service at all. As people began to line up who had
been healed of various diseases and afflictions, my helpers
began to bring people up on the platform that the Lord had
gloriously and wonderfully touched. One after another they
brought up people who had been deaf. Each one of them had
experienced the healing presence of the Lord and their
deafness was gone and they were all hearing with perfect
soundness. There were about four different people in a row
who God had healed of deafness. These deaf people who
were healed ranged from those who had severe loss of hearing
to those who could not hear at all. I stood in amazement at
what the Lord was doing. The other significant fact about these
who were being freed from this deafness was that many of
these had just given their heart to the Lord earlier in the
service.
As I heard testimony after testimony of these whose ears God
had opened up as well as others who were being healed of
various kinds of diseases, I asked the Lord was there a reason
why these things were happening on the level that they were. I
instantly had awareness as to why these things were occurring
in the magnitude that they were. This church that we were
holding these services in was not only a praying church, but a
fasting one as well. They were in the midst of a 21-day fast
when these services were scheduled and were happening. I
suddenly understood the power that fasting can make in the
release of the supernatural. Jesus said that fasting is an
integral part of the supernatural. When the disciples had no
success in casting out a demon and healing a boy beset by
epilepsy, they asked Jesus why they couldn’t get the job done,
when Jesus Himself had accomplished the task.
Jesus’ answer is recorded in Matthew 17:20-21:
So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for
assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard
seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to
there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible
for you. However, this kind does not go out except by
prayer and fasting."
Jesus said that there are some things that will not happen
unless there has been time spent in prayer and fasting.
Once I saw this in that praying and fasting church, I went back
to our apostolic center and instituted a week’s worth of fasting
leading up to every miracle service we had. As this began to
happen, the signs and wonders began to increase in number
and in power. What I learned in that setting of that local church
dramatically affected my life and how we function today in the
supernatural of the Lord.
This is a critical issue to growing and developing in the ministry
of the supernatural. We must be open to be taught, but more
than anything to come to revelation from the Father. Jesus was
very clear about the source of the supernatural in His life. It was
revelation that flowed from intimacy with the Father.
When Jesus healed the man at the Pool of Bethesda of the
infirmity he had carried for 38 years, it clearly caused a big stir.
In John chapter 5, we find this story and the aftermath of its
effect. A man, who had been lying beside this pool for a long
time waiting on the angel to come down and stir the waters,
instead had an encounter with Jesus. Jesus approached him
and asked him if he desired to be made well. Through the
discourse between Jesus and this man, the man is miraculously
made well and takes up the pallet he was lying on and goes his
way. The problem was that the day Jesus performed this
miracle was the Sabbath. By Jewish law it was illegal and
improper for a man to carry his bed or pallet on that day. When
he is confronted by the Jewish religious hierarchy concerning
his carrying his bed on the Sabbath, the man responded that
the one who made him whole was the one who told him to pick
up his bed and walk. The miraculous gave Jesus more authority
in the life of this man than the legalistic rituals of the Jewish
rule- keepers. This man tasted the life of Jesus as opposed to
the death of the rule-keepers and would never be the same
again.
We see in John 5:19-20 that when the Jews began to
question Jesus about His miracles and supernatural acts
performed on the Sabbath, Jesus responded to them by
unveiling the secret to the supernatural that flowed from His
life and can also flow from ours:
Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of
Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever
He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the
Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He
Himself does; and He will show Him greater works
than these, that you may marvel.”
First Jesus announced to those who were asking Him about the
miracles on the Sabbath that He only operated as a man on
earth and not as God. Jesus said that only by “seeing” what the
Father was doing could the Son then act. Jesus limited Himself
while here on earth to our own limitations. Jesus did not do
miracles as God while here on earth, but only as a man.
Because of this, we too should expect for the supernatural to
flow from our lives. The Bible is clear that the purpose for
Jesus’ coming was to bring many sons to glory. (Hebrews 2:10)
Jesus did not come to wow us with the power He displayed. He
came to show us what was available to us and empower us to
act and live the same way He did. We are also told that He is
the firstborn among many brothers. (Romans 8:29) We must
stop putting Jesus in a category all by Himself. If we do this, we
are cutting ourselves off from functioning like He did. We must
understand that if Jesus limited Himself on earth to our
limitations, then we too can do what He did and we are told
even more so. John 14:12 clearly says from Jesus’ own mouth
that we will have access into the greater works because we will
be empowered with the same power that Jesus Himself was
empowered with while here on earth:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me,
the works that I do he will do also; and greater works
than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
We must understand and be firmly established in the fact that
Jesus did nothing on earth as God, but lived completely and
totally as a man empowered by the Spirit of the Lord. This is
who we are as well. Philippians 2:5-8 shows us with great
clarity that Jesus laid aside all claims to functioning as God
while on the earth. He did not lay aside claims to being God, but
rather to functioning from His God powers while here on earth.
He allowed our limitations to be placed on Himself:
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider
it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of
no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men. And being found in
appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and
became obedient to the point of death, even the death
of the cross.
Jesus so took on the nature and likeness of us as humans that
he became like us in every way. This was for several reasons,
but a primary one was so that He could re-claim the creation of
God back from the devil. Adam, the man, lost creation in the
garden, so Jesus, the man, had to win it back. This is why
Jesus could never touch and function as God while on His
earthly mission. To do so would have meant the forfeiture of His
right to be our Savior. This is why Satan tempted Him while he
was in the wilderness with
the temptation to act on His God abilities. Remember that when
Jesus was hungry after 40 days of fasting, Satan came along
and tried to get Jesus to turn stones into bread. The turning of
stones into bread was not the issue. The issue was the power
that He would use to do it. Matthew 4:3 says of this temptation:
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You
are the Son of God, command that these stones
become bread."
Satan tempted Him to function, move and use His power as
God to perform a miracle. Satan knew that if he could get
Jesus in a moment of weakness to perform as God, then He
would forfeit the right to be the redeemer of man and all of
God’s creation. Jesus could have acted as God in that moment,
but the God-head would have lost the rights to creation forever.
Satan would have won the right to rule over what God created
forever, had Jesus touched His abilities as God. But He didn’t.
He lived, functioned and performed all miracles as a man
empower and indwelt by God. He set the course for us to
follow, so that we too can perform and function in the
supernatural of the Lord. Not only was Jesus built for signs and
wonders, but so are we.
Isaiah 18:8 says that Jesus and those who are His offspring
are made for miracles:
Here am I and the children whom
the Lord has given me!
We are for signs and wonders in
Israel From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
The writer of Hebrews picks up this Old Testament verse and
speaks of it as well. (Hebrews 2:13) This shows us the ultimate
reason behind this verse and brings it into New Testament
application. Along with Jesus, we are built and made to function
in signs and wonders. The same DNA that is in Jesus is in us.
The same nature that is in Jesus is in us. (II Peter 1:3-4) The
same Spirit that lives in Jesus now lives in us. (Romans 8:11)
Just as Jesus lived and functioned in the miraculous, so are we
to as well. The key to this for us is the same as it was for Jesus.
To see what the Father is doing and to act it out just like Jesus
did.
Jesus acted out what He by revelation understood the Father to
be doing. He only did what He saw the Father do. He said
clearly in John 5:20 that this was the key to the “greater works.”
He also said in that verse that what made all this work was the
love relationship and intimacy between the Father and the Son.
As a result of this deep place of intimacy and sharing of secrets,
the Father showed the Son “all things that He Himself does.”
What powerful ideas and understandings! The truth of the
matter is that the Father is always working. He simply doesn’t
have anyone quite often that can see it because of lack of
intimacy. Miracles and the supernatural do not flow so much out
of gifting as they should out of intimacy and a place of secrecy
with the Father. This is what Jesus had and it allowed Him to
function out of revelation. In other words, He saw what others
didn’t see and therefore did what others couldn’t do. If we are to
function in this place as well, so must we.
An intimacy that births revelation is the critical piece to
healings, signs and wonders. Jesus spoke of this in
Matthew 13:14-15. In these verses, Jesus spoke of those who
hear and see, but don’t really hear or see what the Father is
seeking to communicate:
“And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which
says: ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not
perceive; For the hearts of this people
have grown dull. Their ears are hard of
hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their
ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and
turn,
So that I should heal them.’”
Notice that their lack of revelation causes theirs hearts not to
perceive and they are not healed. I realize that this healing is
dealing with more than just a physical dimension, but it does
apply to physical as well as social, spiritual, emotional and any
other realm that would be needed. The reason they were not
healed and did not receive nor function in the supernatural is
they were not able to understand by revelation what God would
communicate to them. Even though they could physically
perceive it, they could not really grasp by revelation who God
was and what He wanted them to get a hold of.
Revelation is critical to getting anything from God and
being able to release the power of God.
When Jesus came to the woman at the well in John 4: 10, He
spoke a very precious word to her that is applicable to us
today. He told her that only if she knew two things would she
be able to receive from Him. The first was if she
knew what He had to give and second was if she knew
who He was:
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift
of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a
drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have
given you living water."
This woman receiving from the Lord was contingent on her
revelation or knowing of some things. When she by revelation
knew the Lord and knew what He had for her, then she could
get it from Him. So many people are trying to work formulas and
gimmicks rather than from intimacy with Him have revelation
that will translate into faith that allows us to grasp the greatness
of God and what He can do.
So intimacy gives birth to revelation that empowers us with
authority that brings a release of power. We see this in the life
of Moses most clearly. Moses was a man who spent 40 years
on the backside of the desert having probably given up on what
he understood his prophetic destiny to be. Moses was meant
by God to be the deliverer of the Hebrews from centuries of
slavery, abuse, and servitude to Pharaoh, king of Egypt. We
know that Moses, earlier in his life had an awareness of his
destiny in God.
But he did what most of us try to do. He sought to fulfill it out of
the strength of the flesh and not the empowerment of the
Spirit. As a result, Moses rose up and killed an Egyptian who
was tormenting a Jew and began the fleshly attempt at
bringing deliverance to his oppressed nation.
Acts 7:25 shows us that Moses had the understanding that he
was their deliverer, but no one else knew it:
For he supposed that his brethren would have
understood that God would deliver them by his
hand, but they did not understand.
Moses’ fleshly attempt at his destiny was short lived and short
circuited because even though God would use him to bring
deliverance, he would first have to encounter a place of
revelation.
After this futile attempt and dismal failure at deliverance of his
people, Moses ran away, married in the land of Midian, and
shepherded his father-in-law’s sheep in the backside of the
desert for 40 years. All thought of being a deliverer of his people
was long gone until the day he encountered a burning bush
while on his tenure in the wilderness.
Suddenly Moses saw the bush that burned yet was not
consumed. He turned aside to see this great sight, and God
spoke out of this bush and began to reveal Himself to Moses as
Jehovah the Great “I Am.”
From this burning bush experience, Moses came to a revelation
of who God is and what God had for him to do. The Lord that he
then saw and knew in a new way sent him back to Egypt to set
His people free. The problem is that Moses, who had thought
himself able to do such a thing in his youthful zeal, now saw
himself as completely irrelevant and insufficient for such a task.
Among other things, God asked him what he held in his hand.
He had a rod or a stick that he had picked up on his journeys as
a sheepherder that he used in his daily task of keeping these
sheep. We all pick up things on our journey in this life. We pick
up ideas, concepts, theologies, teachings and many other
things. Our lives are a combination of things we have picked up.
On
that day, the Lord was about to empower through revelation
what Moses had “picked up”. After Moses admitted that he
was holding a shepherd’s rod in his hand that he found
somewhere along the way, God told him to throw it down. As
he did this, it became a serpent that Moses ran from.
Anyone that is going to be used by God with authority must get
the snake out of it. We must run from the serpent that can
manifest itself in the authority that God grants us. Many people
who have been granted places of authority in God have
become controlling, manipulative, abusive and brutish with what
God gave them. This is because they never saw the snake that
was in what they held in their hand. Once Moses saw the snake
that was in that rod and ran from it, the Lord commanded him to
pick it back up by the tail. Nobody should pick up a snake -
much less by the tail. A snake picked up by the tail will swirl
around and bite that person. But when Moses obeyed and
picked up the rod that was now a snake by the tail, it became a
rod again. God commanded Moses to pick it up by the tail,
because it was the little end. God was saying to Moses, “the
rod that you will carry you must know that you hold the little
end, while I have the big end”.
We must be aware of what we carry in these earthen
vessels. The greatest of the power is God’s - not ours. II
Corinthians 4:7 tells us that we are earthen vessels filled
with God Himself. We must never forget this or let slip this
perspective:
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that
the excellence of the power may be of God and
not of us.
The greatness of the power is of God and not of us. He is the
one in authority and we simply represent Him. This is what the
Lord wanted Moses to see before He sent him back to Egypt
as His deliverer.
We know that Moses took that rod and with the authority in it
and from it destroyed the gods of Egypt. There were ten
plagues released against Egypt from this rod that absolutely
annihilated the powers of darkness that ruled Egypt and held
God’s people captive. Once these powers were destroyed,
God’s people were set free from centuries of bondage and
slavery.
Notice that what changed Moses from an 80 year old failure -
keeping his father-in-laws sheep on the backside of the desert
- was revelation of the Lord and what he held in his hand. Until
his encounter with the Lord at the burning bush, the rod he
held in his hand was just a nice stick. But after the burning
bush encounter, the stick became “the rod of God” as seen in
Exodus 4:20:
Then Moses took his wife and his sons and set them
on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And
Moses took the rod of God in his hand.
Moses was not about to go on his mission from God without
the “rod of God” in his hand. The question that I have is “what
and who really changed?” Something changed at the revelation
of the Lord and what Moses held in his hand. Did something
happen to the stick or did something happen to Moses? The
truth is Moses changed from the revelation that he received.
Suddenly out of his
encounter with God, the stick he had carried for years - the one
he had picked up somewhere along the way - he saw
differently. As a result of the way he saw what he had in his
hand all along, it now functioned differently. Revelation is what
changed everything and brought Moses into a place of authority
which released power that destroyed the nation of Egypt and
set God’s people free.
Revelation from encounters with God produces the kind of
authority that releases power that sets people free. This is what
happened to Moses and also what must happen with us. When
we function out of revelation of who the Lord is, what He does
and what He has put into our hand - signs, wonders and
miracles will occur. Healings are not a result of a magic act.
They are the result of revelation. Once we encounter the Lord
all things change. David, because of revelation ate the
showbread in the temple and was blameless. Jesus used David
as an example of one who did what was unlawful by Jewish law
and yet was guiltless. He ate bread that was legal only for the
priest to eat. We find this referenced in Matthew 12:3-4:
But He said to them, "Have you not read what David
did when he was hungry, he and those who were with
him: how he entered the house of God and ate the
showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for
those who were with him, but only for the priests?”
David ate the showbread and was blameless because he was
an Old Testament man with a New Testament revelation of the
priesthood of all believers. His revelation enabled him to do
things that would have gotten others
killed under the Old law. We must live life from revelation. When
we do, we can do things and go places others can’t go. We can
step into dimensions other who keep rules can never move into.
This is what the Apostle Paul was referring to in Galatians 3: 5.
Paul is declaring that the supernatural is a result of revelation
and not the keeping of laws or rules:
Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works
miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the
law, or by the hearing of faith?
The hearing of faith is a reference to revelation. Faith comes
into our hearts when we have had an encounter with God.
Miracles are a result of encountering the Lord and not keeping
rules and regulations. This is what David knew and as a result
from revelation did what others would have deemed wrong
and unlawful.
The same thing happened to the Egyptians trying to do what
the Israelites did in crossing the Red Sea. When the children
of Israel were delivered from their bondage the Egyptians
decided to pursue them and re-capture them. We know that
the Red Sea was miraculously parted and the people of God
crossed over. The Egyptians seeking to do the same thing
were drowned and the whole army destroyed. We find a
reference to this in Hebrews 11:29:
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry
land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so,
were drowned.
The reason one group passed over in a miraculous way and
the other group was destroyed trying to do it, is because of
revelation. The Hebrews had a revelation of who God is and
had heard His word concerning crossing over the Red Sea on
dry ground. The Egyptians on the other hand moved into
presumption and were drowned. The difference between a
miracle and presumption was revelation. One knew their God
and His power while the other did not.
Attempting the miraculous without revelation will always result
in presumption. But when we by revelation move miracles are
the normal.
This was the issue of the people in Paul’s day who tried to cast
out demons in the name of Jesus who Paul preached. We find
in Acts 19:13-16 some Jews that did not have a personal place
of revelation in God who sought to operate in the same
authority Paul did from his place of revelation. As a result, their
efforts did not work and devastating consequences followed:
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon
themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over
those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by
the Jesus whom Paul preaches." Also there were seven
sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And
the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and
Paul I know; but who are you?" Then the man in whom
the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them,
and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that
house naked and wounded.
Some would say that this happened because these people
weren’t saved. The issue goes considerably deeper than that.
The problem was they tried to work a formula without revelation
and it wouldn’t work. The power of God and the supernatural
release is a result of revelation of who Jesus is, what He does
and what He has put into our hand. When we understand these
things by revelation, authority and power goes with it. Miracles
occur, signs and wonder take place and the kingdom is
advanced and established. We must stop trying to work
formulas, find gimmicks and even applaud giftings and get into
the secret place of the Lord until our spirits are inundated with
deep revelation of who He is.
As this happens, we will see what the Father is doing and work
with Him. Heaven and earth become aligned and connected
through intimate revelation. When this happens, dominion of
the kingdom is established as apostolic authority is released
through signs and wonders. The revelation of Jesus Christ
Himself produces this authority in and through our lives and
ministries.

The Pastor of the church told one of his unbelieving members
if he would come to the special miracle service, God would
heal him. Of course, I didn’t know this and was there to
minister the word of the Lord and release the apostolic healing
anointing and authority of Jesus. As the service began with
praise and worship, I sensed the presence of the Lord come
into the room. As the Pastor turned the service over to me, I
began to call out words of knowledge concerning the needs of
the people. Many responded and I began to lay hands on them
and pray the prayer of faith according to the Bible. Soon,
several were clearly healed and I prepared to spend some
time teaching and ministering the word of God. Before I could
begin, the Pastor asked if I would pray for one more individual
- the man the Pastor had exhorted and boldly told that God
would heal if he would come.
At the Pastor’s admonition, the man came forward walking with
a very visible limp and in pain. He had a bone growing out of
the side of his foot. This had been an ongoing developing
problem that the doctors said would have to be corrected
through a quite in-depth surgery and long recovering time.
They briefly told me the condition. I had the man sit down in
one of the front seats of the auditorium where the meeting was
being held. I then took the leg that had this abnormality and
prayed a bold yet
simple prayer. I told the abnormal growth of this bone to
disappear and be gone. I sensed a very clear presence and
anointing of the Lord. I then had the man stand up and told him
to walk. As he took his first steps, the expression on his face
became one of awe and amazement. The Lord instantly and
completely caused the abnormal bone growing out of his foot to
vanish. The man no longer needed his cane and began to run
with excitement as what the Lord had done began to dawn on
him. I later went back to this church and the man told me that
immediately after his healing, he began to run for exercise -
something that was absolutely impossible for him to have done
before.
What a truly great and awesome Lord we serve!
One of the reasons for this miracle was the atmosphere of faith
that had been created and cultivated among this people. The
atmosphere of faith is absolutely essential if we are going to
see widespread supernatural occurrences happen. Before
Jesus attempted anything of a miraculous nature, an
atmosphere of faith was always present. Luke 5:17 tells us of
this atmosphere that accompanied the ministry of Jesus:
Now it happened on a certain day, as He was
teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of
the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of
Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the
Lord was present to heal them.
As the people and religious leaders of Jesus’ day gathered to
hear Him teach, the power of God began to heal them. In other
words, God’s presence created an atmosphere for God to heal
in and for people to receive from. If I had to pick one thing that
is completely necessary for an apostolic
healing flow, it is the atmosphere of God’s presence. This
atmosphere was a result of the Lord teaching the word of God.
I have watched and witnessed as this atmosphere is created
through worship, the release of words of knowledge, but also
through the teaching of the word. The apostle Paul spoke of the
atmosphere of faith that is created through the word of faith
being preached. The word of faith is not a movement, it is an
apostolic release. Paul, in Romans 10:8, speaks of the word of
faith as the message that he preached. In other words, when
Paul preached an atmosphere of faith arose for people to
receive from God:
But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your
mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith
which we preach).
As the apostle spoke under the inspiration and unction of the
Holy Spirit the atmosphere would become energized with faith to
receive from the Lord. I have seen this happen many times as
the word is spoken from an apostolic and prophetic dimension.
Suddenly the atmosphere in the room changes and things
become energized with the power and presence of the Lord. We
see this in the Apostle Paul’s ministry in Acts 14:8-10 which tells
us the story of a man who was lame from birth. As the Apostle
Paul spoke from his anointing as an apostle, faith filled the
room, but especially this man who had never walked:
And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet
was sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb, who
had never walked. This man heard Paul speaking.
Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had
faith to be healed,1said with a
loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet!" And he
leaped and walked.
As this man heard Paul speaking, faith erupted in his heart. As
Paul discerned this, he turned and issued the word of command
and this man suddenly leapt to his feet and did what he had
never done before, walked. What would cause such a thing to
occur? It was the atmosphere of faith created by the apostolic
release of the word of God that broke through the demonic, the
natural realm and caused an ignition of faith in all who were
present. The atmosphere became charged with faith and the
ability to believe God. When this occurs - nothing is impossible.
I believe that in these moments of apostolic release that a gift of
faith is turned loose so that those who have a hard time
believing in other settings are suddenly empowered to believe
in those moments. We see the Bible speaking of the gift of faith
in I Corinthians 12:9. We are told that faith is one of the nine
gifts or manifestations of the Holy Spirit:
to another faith by the same Spirit, to another
gifts of healings by the same Spirit…
We have all been given a measure of faith that is ours to
develop and use. (Romans 12:3) This requires that we are
faithful and diligent in this endeavor. But the gift of faith is a
momentary endowment of the Lord that enables us to believe
with a supernatural issue flowing through us. This is what
happens when the atmosphere of faith is created. People of all
levels and realms of faith are suddenly strengthened and
empowered to reach out and grab hold of the healing and
delivering power of God’s presence at that
moment. This is what Jesus spoke of in Mark 11:21-23. After He
cursed the fig tree the disciples were in awe of how quick and
soon it withered away. Jesus’ response to their amazement was
to speak to them concerning faith:
And Peter, remembering, said to Him, "Rabbi, look! The
fig tree which You cursed has withered away." So Jesus
answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. For
assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain,
'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not
doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he
says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”
Jesus exhorted the disciples to “have faith in God.” In the
original this literally says “have the faith of God”. God Himself
operates in the faith realm and when we do too, we are
operating as God Himself does. One of the reasons for Jesus’
coming was to move us out of human experience and into the
experience of the way God Himself functions. We are made in
His image and likeness and therefore are called and
commissioned of Him to live like He Himself does. (Genesis
1:26)
Because we are ordained to live like God, He has committed
dominion in the earth to us. Jesus as the God- Man was
exemplifying this when He cursed the fig tree. He used this
occasion as an opportunity to teach the disciples another
lesson concerning the faith realm and how powerful it is. I
personally believe that operating in the “faith of God” is the
same thing as the “gift of faith” spoken of in I Corinthians 12.
Again, we have all been given a “measure of faith.” This is ours
to develop. But the gift of
faith or the faith of God is what we can step into in given
moments to see mighty signs and wonders occur. I don’t live
in this dimension, but I can in given moments step into this
place by the grace of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Faith suddenly rises in my heart and I begin with boldness to
do things I would never do otherwise.
When this gift of faith is present in a service or really any other
dimension of life an aggressive anointing can take hold that
compels you to step out of the normal and into a realm where
the unconventional seems appropriate and right. This kind of
anointing is spoken of in Psalms 92:10. This scripture really
helped me understand what I so often sense in times of faith
that bring and birth signs and wonders:
But my horn You have exalted like a wild
ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.
A wild ox as opposed to a domesticated ox is at times
seemingly brutish and even uncontrollable. This is a good
picture of what this gift of faith can produce in certain times and
moments. From this gift of faith an anointing arises that is fresh
and alive and with it an aggression and even violence of spirit
against anything that is not of God. This is why Smith
Wigglesworth, the mighty healing apostle of his day, was reports
to have hit many people while ministering healing to them. As
he would literally hit them, they would be gloriously healed as
tumors would fall from their bodies, diseases would be
destroyed and sicknesses would vanish. When asked about this
practice in the services he led, Mr. Wigglesworth responded that
he wasn’t hitting the people, he was hitting the devil. I
understand this. This is that wild ox anointing that can come as
the gift of faith comes upon a person or into a place.
The fact is that as this faith dimension comes into a room or
service those who have struggled to believe are suddenly
empowered to believe. This atmosphere quite often is the result
of the apostolic release that creates it. Not only is their a gift of
faith for those who are ministering healing to function in, but
there is also as atmosphere created by the gift of faith for
people to receive in. This is created by following the Holy Spirit,
but also understanding some very strategic things.
Apostolic signs and wonders are a result of this atmosphere of
faith being created that grants people a supernatural ability to
receive from God in. The Bible literally says that there is a
grace given to be able to receive grace. John 1:16 tells us that
from the Lord Himself we get grace to be able to apprehend
grace:
And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for
grace.
In miracle and healing service times there is literally a grace
released to people to be able to receive the grace of healing.
What a wonderful thought. There is a grace of faith to be able to
apprehend the grace that brings healing to people. When this is
present, signs and wonders are easy and abundant. Being a
part of creating and releasing this kind of atmosphere is no
accident. When Jesus went to the household of Jairus to raise
his daughter from the dead, He was very strategic in what He
did. He was very selective in who He allowed to be in the room.
Mark chapter 5:37- 42 chronicles the account of this amazing
resurrection:
And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter,
James, and John the brother of James. Then He came
to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a
tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When
He came in, He said to them, "Why make this
commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but
sleeping." And they ridiculed Him. But when He had
put them all outside, He took the father and the mother
of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered
where the child was lying. Then He took the child by
the hand, and said to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is
translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." Immediately
the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of
age. And they were overcome with great amazement.
Jesus only allowed Peter, James, John and the father and
mother of the deceased little girl to accompany Him - He didn’t
include any of the other disciples. He also put out of the house
all the nay-sayers and those who were ridiculing His perception
and discernment of the matter at hand.
Jesus did this to create the kind of atmosphere that was
necessary for this miracle to be performed. Once the right
atmosphere was present the anointing that was upon Jesus
was clearly sufficient enough to get the job done. Jesus
strategically got rid of those who were polluting the atmosphere
with their unbelief and kept the ones who were enhancing it with
their faith.
We must understand that in any and every setting where
people are going for signs and wonders, those who are there
are either polluting or enhancing the atmosphere of faith.
Those who are believing and releasing themselves in
faith are helping to create the atmosphere, while those who are
skeptics, pessimists, grumbler and complainers are
contaminating what the apostolic ministry is seeking to create.
This is why Jesus put outside all who were unwilling to change
their spirit and attitude and come into an agreement with the
pursuit of the supernatural. So must we. Many times we are too
polite and politically correct for our own good. This spirit in the
church is stopping the supernatural from happening. I am not
advocating that we be mean or hurtful to people, especially
those who are sincerely seeking to understand. But I am saying
that those who are purposely withstanding the pursuit of the
supernatural should be dealt with on whatever level is required
to purge the atmosphere of unbelief and negativity.
In a very practical way, I began to see this. I noticed that when
the whole church was there that miracles were happening on
one level. I became aware that as the services would linger and
the crowd would get smaller that the anointing level would
seem to increase and the miracles would become more
substantial. I soon discerned that the atmosphere in the room
increased in faith and expectancy as the spectators begin to
leave as the services went past their liking or comfort zones. As
the unbelieving and non- interested group left, the atmosphere
in the room would intensified in faith and anointing. Things that
we had believed for in the earlier part of the service suddenly
started happening as a purer atmosphere of faith arose in the
place. Before I understood the dynamics that were driving this,
I would wish that those who had already left had stayed and
witnessed these bigger miracles. Then I understood that the
bigger miracles would probably not of
happened had the crowd stayed. They would have polluted the
atmosphere of faith so much that people would have been
thwarted from receiving from the Lord. This should make us
know that what we each do individually in a service and a time
in the presence of the Lord can hinder us from receiving from
the Lord personally, but as importantly it can stop someone else
from getting their miracle.
Let me be very plain here. I am not saying that miracles only
happen in small groups, even though so often the smaller the
group, the hungrier they seem. Miracles can happen in large
groups as well, if those people have been taught how to
believe God and how to release themselves to Him. The group
size is not the issue. It is the kind of group that is present that
determines the atmosphere that the Lord has to move in.
A really good picture of this is seen in the book of II Kings 4: 38-
41. In this story, Elisha the prophet tells his servant to make
some stew for the sons of the prophets who were before him
probably in a discipling session. As the servant obeys someone
brings that which is poison and begins to slice it up into the pot.
As they begin to eat of this stew they realize that it is poison
and must be healed:
And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine
in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting
before him; and he said to his servant, "Put on the large
pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets." So one
went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild
vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and
came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they
did not know what they were. Then they
served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they
were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, "Man
of God, there is death in the pot!" And they could not
eat it. So he said, "Then bring some flour." And he put it
into the pot, and said, "Serve it to the people, that they
may eat." And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
This is exactly what happens when we show up for a corporate
time together. We bring what we have gathered and slice it up
into the corporate pot. If we are bringing that which is full of
faith then we help create an atmosphere that is full of life
where miracles occur. But if we bring that which is poison,
faithless and full of negativity, it is possible to poison the whole
pot or corporate experience where we are.
Once they recognize that death was in the pot, they cried to the
man of God who commanded that flour be put into the pot. As
this flour was put into the pot, the poison was removed and
everyone ate freely and was satisfied. Flour is the main
ingredient to bread and bread always speaks to us of the word
of God and God’s provision. It is quite often the word of God
that destroys the power of unbelief and brings people to a
realm of faith. We are told very clearly that faith comes by
hearing and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)
Apostolic declaration of the word of God will cleanse the pot
which speaks to us of the atmosphere that has been created by
what people have brought in with them. It is not just the
declaration of the word, but the word brought forth with
apostolic authority that causes the atmosphere to be cleansed
and a purity of faith to arise in the midst of God’s people. From
this place of faith, miracles are easy.
There are some spiritual yet practical secrets to cultivating an
atmosphere where the miraculous transpires.
Atmospheres for miracles can be built if we know some of these
secrets. As we begin to go after miracles, signs and wonders in
our apostolic center, we didn’t start off with a great level of faith
among us - we built it. Through a consistent and
uncompromising teaching of the word of God on these subjects,
the religious mindsets of the people begin to change as truth
resonated in their spirits and hearts. Notice that I said an
uncompromising teaching of the word of God concerning the
power of the Lord. There has been so much religion taught as
truth that the church is full of unbelief and skepticism. To
counter this tremendous fault that has paralyzed the church and
kept it out of the supernatural of God, the word of God has to
be boldly declared and spoken without bashfulness or timidity.
God will back up that word with signs and wonders following.
(Mark 16:20)
Another thing about this word that cultivates this atmosphere of
faith is that it needs to be prophetic in nature. There is a place
for line upon line teaching of the word, even concerning the
supernatural. But there is also a time where we have been in
God’s presence and speak the word of God that is presently
flowing from His mouth.
This is what the prophetic is; it is the present “thus says the
Lord”. As we tap that word and begin to proclaim it, faith will
be generated in the hearts of the people of the Lord on a
whole other level. The miracles of the Lord will follow. This is
what the prophet declared in Amos 3:7:
Surely the Lord God does nothing,
Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the
prophets.
God reveals His intent and word to the prophets, so they can
declare and He can then do it. The Lord will not do what the
prophets have not proclaimed. As we hear the word of the Lord
and say what He is saying, a miraculous power of God will be
released as the faith of people rise to grab hold of that which
God has for them. I have seen the “thus says the Lord” release
and generate an anointing in the midst of a people that
produced a believing atmosphere. When this is in place, the
Holy Spirit is able to work the works of God in that place and
miracles, signs and wonders happen.
Another imperative to creating an atmosphere of faith is
worship. Let me define worship. Worship is not what is
happening in many places today that is being called worship.
Worship is not good music, talented vocals or slick
choreography. Real worship has at its core a hunger for God.
This is the worship that God Himself responds to. The goal of
worship is always the presence of the Lord.
In John 7:39 we are told that the Holy Spirit would not come
until Jesus was glorified. In the actual sense of this verse it was
dealing with the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of the
Lord back to heaven. But there is a principle being unfolded
here. This verse comes on the heels of Jesus revealing that
those who believe on Him will receive within themselves rivers
of living water flowing out of their inner most being:
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those
believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was
not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
We are told that the promise of the river of the Spirit flowing in
us and from us would not occur until Jesus is glorified. The
Holy Spirit will show up in His power where Jesus is glorified.
This is what worship is. Worship is the glorifying and hunger
after Jesus Himself. When this is present in our worship, the
Person and Power of the Holy Spirit will come with great
intensity and purpose.
I am afraid that today we have people who are more interested
in an experience than they are with the Person of Jesus. Our
worship is not after an experience, but after the Person of the
Lord. When He is the pursuit of our worship, there will be an
atmosphere of faith created when the precious Holy Spirit
enters that place. Once the Holy Spirit is there, miracles will
happen.
Following the prophetic motivations of the Holy Spirit is also
critical to creating an atmosphere of faith. I remember one
miracle service where we were worshiping, I suddenly felt this
compelling to begin to dance and whirl about as I stood on the
platform. Please know that I have been free for many years to
dance, shout and praise in whatever manner seemed
appropriate. But in this time when I clearly felt the Lord pressing
me to dance and whirl on the platform, I struggled with it. First, I
was on the platform and not on the floor. If I did this, it was
before everyone. Second, this was not the ordinary thing that
we did in healing services. I stood there struggling with it in my
heart and mind. I really felt it was the Lord, so I went for it. As I
began to dance
and whirl across the platform - suddenly something broke in
the atmosphere. A freedom came into the room and God’s
presence showed up. People began to get healed. The
prophetic sense of a simple thing that needed to be done
released this. Song of Solomon 3:2-4 shows us how important
it is to the prophetic leading us into the place of His presence
and the atmosphere of faith:
"I will rise now," I said, "And go about the city; In the
streets and in the squares I will seek the one I love." I
sought him, but I did not find him. The watchmen who
go about the city found me; I said, "Have you seen the
one I love?" Scarcely had I passed by them, When I
found the one I love. I held him and would not let him
go, Until I had brought him to the house of my mother,
And into the chamber of her who conceived me.
As the bride in the book went out looking for the One she
loved, she didn’t find Him until after she had encountered the
watchmen. Watchmen are always the prophets. Once she met
the prophets in the pursuit of the One she loved, she quickly
found who she was looking for, her lover and Bridegroom.
It was prophetic understanding and insight for the moment that
ushered her into the presence of the Lord. We must have the
prophetic to find the presence of the Lord. As we follow the
prophetic we will enter into where He is.
Where He is - is where miracles are. This is what happened as I
felt the unction and the compelling to dance before the Lord. I
didn’t afterward decide that “dancing and whirling” before the
Lord was now “the secret” to the Lord’s presence. But it was at
that moment. It is other things in
other moments. We must have prophetic insight in how to come
into His presence and how to see the anointing and power of
the Holy Spirit released. This helps create the atmosphere of
faith.
Testimonies can be very powerful also in the creation of this
atmosphere. One of the things we do in most of the services is
allow and encourage people to come with their testimonies of
healing. As the presence of the Lord fills the place, people
began to be healed. We then bring them on the platform and
allow them to share what the Lord has just done for them. As
this happens, the atmosphere in the place continues to
“thicken” with faith as people continue to step into their own
healing and miracle. What the Lord has done for the one who
has been healed is what He desires to do for all who are in
need. I always encourage and challenge people to not leave a
service having been healed and not share it with others. When
Jesus healed the ten lepers in Luke 17:12-19 only one took the
time to return and tell Him thank you. This obviously greatly
impressed and moved Jesus. Thanksgiving is of great value to
the Lord who does great things in our lives:
Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him
ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they
lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have
mercy on us!" So when He saw them, He said to them,
"Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was
that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of
them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and
with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his
face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a
Samaritan. So Jesus answered and said, "Were there
not ten cleansed? But
where are the nine? "Were there not any found who
returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?"
And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has
made you well."
Jesus wanted to know where the other nine were who had
been healed. As this one returned, Jesus declares to him that
his faith had made him well. There is something about
thanksgiving and bothering to come back and lavish it on the
Lord that seals our healing. Jesus settled and sealed the
healing of this man because he bothered to come back. How
much should we as well. When testimonies are given that
glorify and acknowledge the mercies of the Lord into our lives,
something very powerful is released into our own.
These testimonies also contribute to the establishing of an
atmosphere for others to receive their healing as well. To not
give glory to the Lord is a very selfish thing indeed. To not do
so is stealing from the Lord glory that is rightfully His - but it is
also stealing from others the opportunity for faith to rise up in
their own heart. We must be and we must encourage others to
be like the one and not like the nine.
Times of intercession before and during a miracle and healing
service are also very helpful in creating and building an
atmosphere of faith. When Jesus raised Lazarus from the tomb
in John 11:41-44, He spoke the word of life only after He
interceded and was with the Father.
His power and authority in this situation was connected to the
praying that had been done beforehand:
Then they took away the stone from the place where
the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes
and said, "Father,
I thank You that You have heard Me. "And I know that
You always hear Me, but because of the people who
are standing by I said this, that they may believe that
You sent Me." Now when He had said these things,
He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" And
he who had died came out bound hand and foot with
graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth.
Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go.
Jesus wanted the people to recognize that His ability to raise
Lazarus up from the grave was connected to His joining to the
Father. We also see that Jesus had spent time with the Father
over this matter, before He ever came to the tomb. Through His
intercession, Jesus had prepared the way and created the
spiritual atmosphere necessary to perform this miracle. This is
an essential that we cannot leave out, if we are to have the
atmosphere necessary to see miracles occur. It is the prayer
and intercession of God’s people that prepare the way of the
Lord and His works to be done.
Where possible, I always have prayer organized and in place
over any miracle service that we are going to hold. The more
that individual and corporate prayer and fasting can be done,
the greater the atmosphere for miracles will be present. As
God’s people strategically pray, demonic resistance that would
hinder the move of God is neutralized and moved out of the
way. Any move of God is always birthed and sustained in a
place of prayer. This is a necessity and a sacrifice that cannot
be left out.
Organization without prayer is a useless shell with nothing in it.
But when adequate prayer power has been released - that shell
of organization becomes impregnated with the
power and miracles of the Lord. The man or woman of God who
is used in apostolic signs and wonders can then step into that
dimension that has been created through the intercession and
warfare of God’s people and see miracles beyond description
occur. No longer is that minister just working from his or her gift,
but they are now joining their gift and anointing to what has
been created through intercession. When this occurs things go
to an entirely new apostolic level of power and might.
Atmosphere is everything when it comes to signs, wonders and
miracles. May the Lord help us as we strategically and
purposely create the atmosphere for His power to move in.
L
The lady came moving down the aisle bent forward and to the
left side. She could not straighten her body up because of
years of arthritis that had caused her to be bent and twisted. In
addition to her bent state, most of her joints were distorted and
causing her great pain to move in any way. I had declared a
word in this meeting that God was healing arthritis. As a result
of this word the woman had felt something began to touch her,
but she was still severely twisted and bent from the torment of
this disease. As she made her way slowly and painfully down
the center aisle of the room we were in, it was clear that she
needed and was believing God for a miracle. There is no cure
for arthritis. Some people simply have pain in their joints and
learn to live with it. Others though can become twisted and
disfigured because of the severity of this affliction.
Such was the case of this woman.
As this lady reached the front of the room where I was
standing, I reached out my hand and joined myself to her faith
and to what the Lord was doing. A tremendous power hit her
and she went falling and flying backwards to the floor. As she
lay on the floor, I watched as the Spirit of the Lord untwisted
her body and set her free from the torment of the arthritis. She
laid there for quite a while as the work of the Lord was done in
her. As she was helped to her feet, she
stood up tall and straight with no bend or twist in her body. The
Lord had completely healed her. She began to move with total
and absolute freedom from the demonic affliction of arthritis that
had possessed and controlled her life. She ran around leaping
and jumping out of joy and excitement at what the Lord had
wrought in her life. She was free.
This is a demonstration of the power of the Lord to set people
free when there is an apostolic release of healing power and
virtue. These things do not happen by accident, neither or they
magical. They are the result of apostolic authority being loosed
to allow kingdom power to be exhibited. Jesus was very clear
when talking about what would happen when the kingdom of
God was preached and was present. Matthew 10:7- 8 tells us
what happens when Jesus sends out those who preach the
kingdom of God. Great apostolic releases of power are known
and experienced because of the declaration of the kingdom:
“And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of
heaven is at hand.' "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,
raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have
received, freely give.”
The real declaration of the kingdom of God always is
accompanied with the miracles of the Lord. We must realize
that it is impossible to see the “full” demonstration of the
kingdom of God outside the apostolic authority of God entrusted
to men. In other words the kingdom of God cannot be present in
the earth in the dimensions needed and desired without
apostles. It takes apostolic authority to fully establish kingdom
rule. This has been one of the problems in these times of
restoration that we are in. We
have been seeking to see the kingdom established without the
needed gifts to accomplish this. Pastors, teachers and
evangelist cannot get the kingdom of God in place fully.
Apostles and prophets are completely necessary to this
happening.
We are told in I Corinthians that the Apostles were set first in
the church. (I Corinthians 12:28) We are also told that the
Apostles and Prophets are the foundation that the church has
its roots in. Ephesians 2:19-20 tells us:
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and
foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and
members of the household of God, having been built
on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus
Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.
These verses do not say that the church is built on the
foundation that the apostles and prophets build, but rather that
the apostles and prophets are the foundation. Jesus Christ is
the chief cornerstone and therefore the one from which all
measurements and alignment is taken. But the foundation of the
household of God is the ministry of Jesus through the apostles
and prophets. It is the kind of grace of God that is necessary in
the apostles and prophets that make the church the kind of
entity that hell cannot resist. Look at it this way. The Apostles
and Prophets are the ground that the church has its roots in.
Therefore the DNA that is in the ground of the apostles and
prophets run through out the fabric of the church. The church
therefore becomes apostolic and prophetic in its nature and life.
It is
not a pastoral, teaching, or evangelizing church. It is
apostolic in nature and power.
This was the case with the early church. The church came out
of the apostles that Jesus had spent 3 and ½ years fashioning
then empowering on the day of Pentecost. From these apostles
of the Lord the kind of church that hell could not withstand was
born. Part of the apostolic release of this church was signs and
wonders from the apostles hands. We find references to this in
several scriptures in the book of Acts:
Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders
and signs were done through the apostles.
(Acts 2:43)
And with great power the apostles gave witness to the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was
upon them all. (Acts 4:33)
And through the hands of the apostles many signs and
wonders were done among the people. And they were
all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. (Acts
5:12)
There was an apostolic release that produced signs and
wonders on a grand scale. These signs and wonders carried
apostolic DNA that not only healed people but neutralized
powers of darkness in the heavenly realm. We must learn how
to release signs and wonders on this scale.
To release these apostolic signs and wonders there must first
be an apostolic atmosphere created. We talked about this in
the last chapter. An apostolic atmosphere of faith is
created out of apostles lives. It is about strategic things that
they do, but more about who they are. An apostle carries a
realm of authority that spiritual powers pay attention to.
Remember that they are
first - as set by God. This implies a dimension of authority that
has been granted by the Lord not just in the church, but more
importantly in the spiritual realm. The very presence of a true
apostle makes demonic powers tremble. But when an apostle
not only knows who they are, but how to release who they are,
there is great fear and trepidation in hell. The release of
apostolic authority will always produce something. One of the
things it will produce is signs and wonders.
As the Lord was moving me into the apostolic realm of life and
ministry, I had a dream. I did not realize then the depths of the
significance of this dream, but looking back I can see more
clearly now. In this dream, the book of I Samuel was open to
the 3rd chapter. This is the chapter
where God reveals Himself to Samuel and calls him to be a
prophet. I was told in the dream to place my hands on the
opened book. As I placed my hands on this book and the
chapter, I suddenly felt the power of the Word go into my
hands. I was then told that very shortly signs and wonders
would begin to happen out of my life as a result of this
experience. This in fact did happen. The interesting thing is that
the primary way that miracles occur from my life is through the
decreeing of God’s word over congregations and people. Some
consider this to be the gift of the word of knowledge, which it
can be, but it goes even deeper than this. There is an apostolic
authority that can be released at times under the anointing of
the Lord and miracles are declared
into place. When this happens, people get healed. Let me try
to explain.
As the presence of the Lord comes into a place either through
worship, the preaching of the word, prayer or other means
released through the leading of the Spirit, there can be a
hovering of God’s presence as in Genesis 1:1-
2. Remember that this is where the Lord spoke the world into
being. But He only did it under the brooding presence of the
Lord:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. The earth was without form, and void; and
darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of
God was hovering over the face of the waters.
We know that in these moments that the Lord Himself made a
declaration and said, “Let there be light” and there was light.
From that point on the Lord spoke and created all things by His
word. It is very important to realize though, that He only spoke
as the Spirit hovered. If the Lord Himself waited until the
presence of the Lord was there to begin to release His
supernatural power, how much more we? Before I go into how
we can do this apostolically, let me say that most people it
appears do not know what to do when the Spirit of the Lord is
moving.
How often is the Spirit grieved and quenched because those
who are in charge don’t know how to respond to the moving of
the Spirit and miss the time to release the power of God. There
had to be a spoken word and faith released in the time when
the Spirit was moving, for creation to occur. It is so with us as
well. Without a person knowing what to do in the time of the
Spirit’s moving we will miss
the moment and people will miss their miracles. When the
Spirit of the Lord is present, because apostolic authority has
brought it on that level, there must be strategic things done just
as at creation.
A few years ago, I was in Cuba holding miracle and healing
crusades. Before the week was over, people were coming from
as much as five hours away any way they could get to where
we were to get a miracle from the Lord. This began as I
preached on a Sunday morning in a small church where the
district superintendent of this particular denomination was
present. He had agreed to allow me to come into the country
and minister in his region even though I was to find out later
that he was very skeptical.
As I finished my sermon on this first Sunday that I was in the
country, as very strong sense of the hovering, moving
presence of the Lord was there. I begin to make apostolic
decrees and release words of knowledge. Suddenly down the
hallway leading to the exit from the building I heard a
commotion. I didn’t know it but there had been brought into the
building a lady who had been bedridden for many years. This
lady suddenly got up from where she was lying and began to
walk and move and praise the Lord.
The place went crazy. The district superintendent was sitting
right in front of this woman and saw the whole thing. As he
witnessed this miracle from the Lord and others taking place as
well, he came forward weeping and began to confess to the
whole congregation that he had not believed that anything
would happen. He began to repent of his unbelief as he saw
and bore witness to who the Lord His and what He was doing.
From that point on signs and
wonders began to happen all over the country. As I said,
people began to hear and come with great effort to wherever
we were. The Lord was truly being glorified and brought honor
by what He was doing.
This miracle that I shared happened not just as a result of the
hovering and brooding presence of the Lord, but also because
in that atmosphere, the word was spoken that brought healing
and deliverance to those who would receive. This has been the
case over and over again as I have learned to take the
apostolic gift that is in me and “turn it loose” in the presence of
the Lord.
One Sunday morning as I was in our home church, I suddenly
in a very simple way, felt the Lord say, “Declare healing”. As I
made an apostolic declaration of healing over the congregation,
I simply ended by declaring, “go and be well.” What I didn’t
know was that sitting in the midst of the several hundred
congregants was a lady who had been given only 6 months to
live because of hundreds of cancerous tumors in her liver. She
heard that word of declaration and grabbed hold of it. She was
not a Spirit- filled woman and really knew nothing of the ways of
the Spirit. She told me later that she just believed the word I
said because I was a “man of God” in her estimation. Just so
happened, that this lady had a doctor’s appointment the next
day. She went to her scheduled time and the doctor began to
examine her. She told him what had happened the day before
and asked him to check her out. The doctor being a Spirit-filled
man himself, graciously did so. What he found, was that every
tumor was gone from her body and her liver. There was no
trace of cancer anywhere. This woman took that report as she
received it, came by the
church to tell us and then went to her 13 year old daughter’s
school to tell her that mommy was not going to die after all, but
was going to live. This happened because of an apostolic
decree under the brooding presence of the Lord and a lady with
child-like enough faith just to grab hold of it.
Let me explain some things here. We have mentioned and
talked about the word of knowledge mentioned in I Corinthians
chapter 12. In this chapter, Apostle Paul refer to nine
manifestations of the Holy Spirit. The word of knowledge is one
of them. This manifestation is a supernatural knowing from the
Lord. It is the ability to discern and know things that we haven’t
learned naturally and through study. In the healing realm, I
many times know the conditions of people who are sitting in
and are a part of a service. Under the anointing, I begin to pick
up in the Spirit sicknesses, illnesses and such that are present
in the people who are there. Sometimes the sense I have is
very generic, while at other times it can become very specific.
This can happen through various ways. For instance, at times I
hear a word about a particular part of the body like liver, heart,
glands or whatever. As I hear these words, I become aware that
the Lord is healing that part of the body in someone. At other
times I will be drawn in my mind and spirit to a place on my own
body. A knee, an ankle, a neck or back, and I will know that
there is a condition in that part of the body that God is healing.
Still at other times, I will literally feel a pain in my own body in a
particular place and discern that this is the Lord letting me know
that someone is diseased or sick in that place. I am perpetually
seeking to become more discerning as the Lord could become
more and more specific in letting me
know where people need to be healed. There have been
occasions when I have known the name of a person
supernaturally and what their issue was. When this is released,
it tends to produce great faith in that person to receive from the
Lord. Regardless of how generic or specific the word of
knowledge is, I have discovered that there is tremendous
apostolic authority that is released when these words are
spoken. In fact I believe that many times when the presence of
the Lord is close, near and hovering, that I can make apostolic
decrees that many would call words of knowledge and see
people be instantly healed.
I began to notice that people would come on the platform
during times of healing and say that the moment I called out a
healing that a fire, warmth, presence or some other sensation
would began to touch their bodies in that area of need. This
happened time after time. I realized that it was the “word” being
released and sent forth that was bringing the healing. (Psalms
107:20)
One Sunday morning, I had a very generic word concerning
feet that were being healed. What I didn’t know was that there
was a lady in the congregation that had an infant that had been
born with club feet. As I released this “sent word” from the Lord,
suddenly and instantly this baby that was in the mother’s arms
feet begin to move and become unbent and straight. The lady
began to cry loud enough for attention to be drawn to her in the
sanctuary. They brought her to the platform and she began to
declare what had just happened.
The church was amazed and excited as we knew we were
witnessing the move and power of God in our midst. The
local ABC television affiliate heard of the story. Mary and I went
to this lady’s house and were a part of this miraculous story
being reported on the evening news in that region. It caused
quite a stir in that area as people were confronted with a bona
fide miracle that could not be denied. There were before
pictures to compare to the now straight feet of this precious little
one. God received the glory and many lives were impacted as a
result. This happened because of the release of the sent word of
the Lord. It was the word sent from apostolic authority that
caused the power of the Lord to touch people.
This even happens to people who know nothing and do not
know to believe. A first time visitor came into one of the morning
services and had such back problems that she could not bear to
remain in the services. I suddenly felt impressed to walk up
during the worship time and declare healing over a back
condition. The lady later testified that she was just about to slip
out of her seat and leave because of the intense pain, when I
said that someone with a disk problem in their back was being
healed. She instantly felt a warmth go through her back and all
the pain left and she was healed. She didn’t even believe. She
didn’t know how. She was about to leave and the word of the
Lord, apostolically decreed, chased her down and healed her.
She was able to straighten up and began to move with
complete liberty and freedom. There is power in the decreed
word of the Lord from apostolic authority.
I was and still am learning how all of this works. Before I began
to move in this realm of authority I thought that words of
knowledge were informative. In other words, I thought that
when someone gave a word of knowledge
that it was just them declaring what God wanted to do if people
would receive the word. This is not exactly right. Words of
knowledge are not informative they are initiative. When words
of knowledge are given and/or decreed, they don’t tell what God
is doing as much as they release the doing of it. I began to
really see and operate in this. I decided during one miracle
service that I was going to test out this thing. I was standing on
the platform as the awesome presence of the Lord was near.
There were words of knowledge and decrees that were being
sent forth. I decided to see what would happen if I said
something while under this presence that I hadn’t heard God
say.
Let me reiterate. I did not hear the Lord say what I said. I
decreed while in this hovering presence of the Lord that a tumor
under an arm was leaving. As we began to receive testimonies
of the healings that had occurred, a lady comes on the platform
weeping and crying reporting that when I said a tumor was
vanishing that the one she had under her arm began to shrink
away. She was instantly and gloriously healed. I learned at that
moment that from apostolic authority I could speak the word
and see it come to pass. I knew it was God’s will to heal
whoever needed healing. I simply took up the apostolic
authority that God had granted me and used it to destroy
sickness and disease.
This may seem strange, but it is the truth. So words of
knowledge and words of decrees are not necessarily
informative but are initiative. They send forth His word and
people are healed and delivered from destruction.
This is really the authority that Moses operated in when he
brought the children of Israel to the Red Sea. Remember that
the people are pressed against the Red Sea with the
army of Egypt pushing from behind. They have no where to go
and it appears are about to be consumed or taken back into
slavery. The Lord causes a pillar of a cloud to separate the two
entities all night long while Moses and the people cry out to the
Lord. Suddenly the Lord rebukes Moses and tells him to quit
crying to Him. He tells him to take the rod that is in his hand
and use in Exodus 14:15-16:
And the Lord said to Moses, "Why do you cry to Me?
Tell the children of Israel to go forward. "But lift up your
rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide
it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground
through the midst of the sea.”
The Lord tells Moses to stop asking Him to do it and for him to
take the equipment he has been given and do it himself. He
was told to take the rod that God had put in his hand and use it
to divide the sea. When Moses quit asking God to do it and
took the authority and anointing that he had been given by the
Lord and did it himself, the miracle occurred. Exodus 14:21-22
shows us the results of Moses learning to use the rod that was
in his hand from the Lord. These verses say,
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and
the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east
wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land,
and the waters were divided. So the children of Israel
went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and
the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and
on their left.
When Moses stretched out his hand over the seas, God
caused the sea to part. It was Moses that initiated this miracle
by using the authority that God had granted him. This is true
for us as well, but especially the apostolic.
When we step into our place in God we will see His hand move
powerfully. He responds to us using the authority He has
entrusted us with. As we do this, miracles, signs and wonders
will result and the kingdom dominion of God will be established
through apostolic authority.

The young girl about 12 years of age came to the youth
conference we were holding at the church. This was the first
time that she had ever been in a church like ours. She was
from a catholic background and had never been around
anything like what she was about to encounter. As the service
progressed there was the normal things that were involved in a
youth meeting. Multi-media, skits, dramas, music and the sort
were all being used to impact the youth. The style of worship
was definitely what youth gravitate towards. These
conferences we did every third month and had become quite
popular with several hundred attending each time.
At the appropriate time I was to come and take over the
services and lead it into the deeper presence of the Lord. I had
found that young people are just like the rest of us they crave
the presence of the Lord once they “taste” it. As I stepped on
the platform, I begin to lead them into an intimate place of
worship with the Lord. Sure enough just like always the
presence and glory of the Lord begin to fill the room where we
were. It was unmistakably God in His glory that had come to
commune with us. As this presence begin to fill the room, I
begin to call out words of knowledge concerning healing that I
was sensing. One of the words that I spoke was that
someone’s back was being
healed and straightened. The young people began to line up on
each side of the platform having been healed of everything from
sprained ankles to asthma and breathing disorders. As I began
to interview those who had been healed and let them share
what had happened to them, this young girl who I had never
seen before came on the platform. She began to share that the
doctor had just that week diagnosed her with a curved spine or
what is commonly called scoliosis. She said that when I said
that a back was being healed and straightened that her back
suddenly popped and she straightened up. She had been
having pain from this developing condition, but now all the pain
was gone and she was healed. I checked her out and saw that
her spine was normal and straight and we began to give the
glory to the Lord.
This young girl then went home and told her parents what had
happened at “that church” she had just gone to. The parents,
which were non-believers, checked her out and saw what
appeared to be a straight and un-curved back.
They promptly scheduled another appointment with the
doctor who had diagnosed this condition and took her back
in for an examination.
As the doctor began to examine her, he too saw that the back
was straight. He ordered another set of x-rays to confirm what
he “thought” he was seeing. It was true this young lady no
longer was afflicted with scoliosis. The doctor then asked this
girl what had happened to her. Her response was, “that man at
that church prayed for me and my back was healed.” The
doctor then responded, “No, really what happened to you.” He
was unable to fathom the miracle that he was seeing and could
not believe that God
had truly healed this young lady. How often do we encounter
this kind of skepticism, yet the Lord keeps moving and doing
what He does as the healer and deliverer among us. As a
result of this healing, not only did this young lady get saved and
become a fixture in the youth ministry of the church, but her
parents as well came to know the Lord. The miracle working
power of Jesus did what it is meant to do, convince people of
who He is today.
This miracle happened in a youth gathering. I have watched as
the Lord has many times revealed Himself in these capacities
to the generation that is coming up. He is raising-up a
generation that will believe Him with all their hearts and be
willing to step out in faith and see His glory revealed.
As we began to push forward in the healing anointing some of
the boldest and non-fearful people who began to move in the
supernatural was the youth of the church. Not only were
miracles happening in the youth group, such as the local
football coaches sending their injured players to be healed of
their injuries, but these same youth were some of the most
fearless workers in the healing services that we held once-a-
month. As the power and presence of the Lord would enter the
room during these intense times of glory, many would be healed
just where they stood. Still others would come forward “feeling”
the presence of the Lord “on” them and asking for help in
receiving. These youth would take these people, come into
agreement with them, take canes and crutches away, remove
oxygen bottles, literally “rip” off cast from broken bones and
have them moving completely healed and delivered in a matter
of moments.
They were moving in great levels of faith under the anointing
that was flowing. I loved seeing every minute of
it as these young people began to discover the power and glory
of who the Lord is. They had been equipped and empowered to
flow in the healing and miracles of the Lord.
If we are to truly have apostolic dominion through signs and
wonders, this equipping of the saints in this area must be
accomplished. Jesus very clearly said that it was the believer’s
portion to function in signs and wonders. It was never meant to
be that which the “superstars” did. First of all there isn’t
supposed to be any superstars and any one who thinks they
are a superstar is mistaken. Every believer is to be equipped to
see miracles and healings happen.
Mark 16:17-18 tells us clearly that signs and wonders are for
the common believer:
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My
name they will cast out demons; they will speak with
new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they
drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them;
they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
One of the first things we must recognize if we are to be
equipped and empowered in the supernatural is something
called alignment. This is a very powerful concept that the Lord
is revealing to the people of God. In the early church everything
was apostolic in nature and life. Jesus spent 3½ years
fashioning and forming apostles the church would come out of.
On the day of Pentecost the church was birthed out of the loins
of these apostles that were now empowered through the Holy
Spirit. Not only were the people apostolic in nature and DNA,
but every ministry gift was as well. Everything was flowing from
the apostolic DNA of
these 12 men who had been discipled, trained and now
empowered by the Lord Jesus Himself. This is why the Bible
says that the apostles were set first in the church. (I Corinthians
12:28) Everything flowed out of who they were and the power
and authority they carried in the Lord. The principle of Psalms
133:1-2 is seen operating in the early church, as the apostolic
DNA flowed to the very least of believers:
Behold, how good and how pleasant
it is For brethren to dwell together in
unity!
It is like the precious oil upon
the head, Running down on the
beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.
To the very skirts of the garments of the church people were
filled with apostolic virtue and power. Everyone wasn’t an
apostle, but everyone was apostolic within their make-up and
fabric of their lives. This is why the verse in Mark 16:17-18 was
uttered by the Lord. Apostolic DNA was so flowing and moving
through everything in the local church that signs and wonders
were happening through the most common of believers. This is
the power of apostolic alignment. When people are aligned
apostolically with apostle’s who function in the miraculous, the
miraculous will begin to flow from their lives as well. This was
the early church’s experience and can be ours as well.
This happened in my life. As I connected with that which had
miracles happening in it and through it, miracles began to
happen within my life and ministry as well. The Lord showed me
that one of the most strategic keys to becoming aligned in the
spirit realm was through the power of honoring with finances.
When I take my finances and honor those who function in this
dimension, I am aligning myself with them and what they carry.
Finances depict and develop spiritual realities. Finances are not
just what we buy and obtain with. Finances are spiritual tools
that we can bring ourselves into alignment with.
We see this principle in what Abraham did with Melchizedek as
recorded in Hebrews chapter 7. In this particular chapter we
are told that when Abraham returned from a stunning victory
over several kings and their armies that he brought a tithe of
the spoil to this Melchizedek. This Melchizedek was the priest
of the most High God. He had neither beginning of days nor
end of life. He had neither mother nor father. In other words, he
was a pre-incarnate revelation of Jesus Christ. Abraham by
revelation knew who this person was and as a result “honored”
him with a tithe. Abraham understood a very powerful principle.
Money and treasures are used to show honor, which in turn
brings one into alignment. When Abraham aligned himself
through honor with his finances, it allowed this Melchizedek the
privilege of releasing a blessing upon the chosen of the Lord.
Hebrews 7:6 tells us of the blessing Abraham received from
the one he through revelation honored with finances:
but he whose genealogy is not derived from them
received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who
had the promises.
No one is greater in the Jewish mind than Abraham the father
of a nation nor greater in mind to those who are in the church
as the father of our faith. Yet this man by revelation aligned
himself with the pre-incarnate Christ and received a blessing
which propelled him into the destiny and promises that God had
made to him. He drew from this Melchizedek the very
substance of who he was by coming into alignment with the
honoring of finances. So can we. If someone is serious about
functioning in signs and wonders, then allow the Lord to lead
you to that apostolic ministry that lives and functions there
themselves and honor them with finances. As you do a spiritual
connection is established that allows you the right of pulling
from them the same anointing that they themselves carry.
Once this connection is made there are some things that need
to occur to begin to function in the supernatural. Before I go into
these things let me say that we must understand the purpose
for signs and wonders. When Jesus walked the earth the
miracles He performed were done in the market place and
secular world. This is ultimately where the Lord wants the
miracles to occur. But the truth of the matter is that they will not
be the boldness to take it to the streets until we have had
success in the church. I watched this happen in the church that
I led. As the people witnessed and experienced people being
healed at their hands in the church they became emboldened
to began to “do it” in the real world. They would pray for people
at the office where they worked or the factory and place of
employment. They would pray over the phone with people and
see them healed. They would pray and
witness miracles at the grocery store and all sorts of other
places of life. This is what happens when people see the real
thing work at their hands in the church. It even affected me
this way.
One day one of the pastors that looked to me apostolically
called me and told me he had to take his wife to the hospital
emergency room with severe abdominal pains. She was
suddenly in such pain that it was unbearable and he knew of
nothing else to do but get her to the hospital as quick as he
could. As soon as he arrived there, he called me and asked me
to please come. I quickly responded and was there within a
short time. When I walked into this full emergency room waiting
area, I found the pastor and his afflicted wife. She already had
an identification bracelet on and was waiting for her time to be
called back to one of the trauma rooms. The pain had not
diminished at all. As I saw her condition, I simply knelt down in
front of her and began to pray as I laid my hands on her. We
were not trying to be quiet are inconspicuous. This was too
serious to worry about such a thing. I rebuked the devil and
released the Lord’s healing anointing. As I did the power of God
touched her and all the pain left completely. She got up from
where she was and in front of everyone took her bracelet off
that identified her as an ER patient and took it to the nurse in
charge and announced that she no longer needed it because
God had healed her. It was quite a display for all to see.
As we exited the ER, a lady who was sitting outside on a
bench was also a patient waiting to see a doctor. She
recognized me from the daily television show that we had on
in that area. She knew we believed in healing because
she had seen some of the healing footage on the show. As I
was about to pass her on the way outside she suddenly said, “I
know you.” I stopped and spoke with her and sensed that she
wanted me to pray with her. I knelt down beside her as she was
seated on the bench and prayed a simple yet strong prayer for
healing. As I finished she said that the trouble she was having
was gone and she proceeded to get up from her seat go into
the waiting room where all the people were and proclaim, “If
you people will let this man pray for you, you could all get out of
here and go home.” This is what the Lord would love to do.
I believe with all my heart that we will empty hospitals in times
to come. But it will not be from superstar ministers, but from
unknowns who have been equipped to do the work of the
ministry.
So what is it going to take to see God’s people apostolically
equipped for the supernatural? Impartation is one of the first
things that we need to be equipped for the miraculous. When
Jesus sent the 12 out, He gave them power for miracles. He
imparted to them the necessary unction and substance to heal
the sick and deliver the bound. Matthew 10:1 shows this
happening:
And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him,
He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them
out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of
disease.
This impartation was not a mind game or a symbolic act.
There was actually a substance of the anointing given to the
disciples so that when they laid hands on people and
ministered to them, the actual power and presence of the
Lord touched them and corrected their problems. Let me say
again right here that healing and miracles are not a magic act.
They are the result of the divine substance of God that we carry
in our lives and spirits. When Jesus gave the disciples the
power to heal it was something that they then carried and
released to those in need.
I am very aware of this in my on life. There is a power to heal
that resides in me and I can give it to those who are in need.
Let me relate it through this personal story. My son Adam was
a great basketball player in high school. He led his team deep
into the state playoffs in Texas and was highly esteemed as a
player and good young man. He later played basketball in
college and started as a freshman of that school.
During his senior year, he was enjoying it and looking forward
to a scholarship to play on the college level. One night as I was
sitting and watching TV at our home, Adam came home from
basketball practice hobbling and limping in. He had sprained
and hurt his ankle at practice that afternoon and now the thing
he loved and the future he wanted was being threatened and in
jeopardy. The year before Adam had hurt his ankle and he had
missed six weeks of basketball as a result. That was his junior
year and now in his senior and final year, it seems it has
happened again.
As Adam entered the house on this particular night, he came in
and sat down on the couch in the room where I was watching
TV. He began to tell me what happened and began to cry out of
anger, frustration and fear of his dreams being destroyed during
his senior year of basketball. He
then got up from the couch and with pain both physically and
emotionally went to his bedroom. I sat in my chair with the
television on feeling compassion and hurt for my son and what
seemed to be happening to him. I wasn’t feeling spiritual or
anointed. I had been watching television, nothing bad or
anything, just relaxing and chillin.
As I sat there, I began to rehearse in my heart the things I knew
about the anointing that I carry by impartation. It isn’t a feeling,
nor a sensation, but a very real substance that lives in me that I
have received by impartation. I decided, because of what lives
in me that I wasn’t going to let this thing happen to my son and
his dreams, when I have something inside me that can fix it. I
got out of my chair and went into his room where he was lying
on his bed in absolute despair and told him to give me his
ankle. He turned his swollen and tender ankle out toward me. I
took it into my hands and said something like this. “In the name
of Jesus, I released to you that which lives in me, even the very
anointing and substance of God”. As I did, I asked Adam what
he was felt. He said that the ankle and where it was damaged
was warm and hot. I told him to stand up and put weight on it.
As he did, he began to say that there was no more pain and he
begin to jump up and down on the once injured ankle as it was
completely and totally healed. The Lord in an instant had
healed and repaired an injury that had taken six weeks to heal
before. He also gave my son’s dream back to him and he lived
it out and saw it come to pass. We serve such a great and
wonderful God. This happened because I believed I had
received an impartation of the substance of the anointing. I
didn’t have to ask the Lord to heal my son; I took the anointing
that lives in me and by His grace applied it to Adam.
Once we receive an impartation, we must realize that what we
have received is a seed. A seed is not the full blown reality of
something but rather the potential for something to become a
reality. For a seed to come to its complete potential it has to be
cultivated and grown. This is what an impartation is. It is that
which we take and grow into a full- blown expression of
kingdom life. So many folks don’t realize this and therefore
receive an impartation but because they don’t see what they
think they should see they feel as if they had not gotten
anything.
This was made real to me as I stood on the platform of a very
powerful ministry and sought to make myself ready for
impartation. The Lord clearly spoke to me as I stood there and
said to me that when you are prayed for, for impartation one of
three things can happen. You can get blessed for the moment.
This is what happens to most folks. They get blessed for the
moment and get a buzz but nothing is left afterwards. You can
also receive a gift imparted into you life. This is what the
Apostle Paul told Timothy. I Timothy 4:14 tells us that it is
possible for a gift from the Lord to be placed in someone’s life
through the laying on of hands:
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given
to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of
the eldership.
Paul was exhorting Timothy that he should not neglect, but use
what was in him as a result of impartation. This is a great
aspect of impartation, but is really not the ultimate. The greatest
is it is possible to grow a ministry from impartation. Paul
declared in Colossians 1: 25 that his
ministry that he had was a result of stewarding the grace of God
that had been imparted into his life:
of which I became a minister according to the
stewardship from God which was given to me for you,
to fulfill the word of God
When we steward what God entrusts us with and cultivate it
and grow it, we can actually see not just a blessing or even a
gift operate, but a ministry be produced. This has always been
my ambition and desire. Ministries that come from the
stewarding and the growing of the seed of impartation are
powerful.
This brings me to the next step that is absolutely essential in
the equipping process. We must recognize that just like in
every other dimension of life, the supernatural is something we
grow into. In other words we probably will not receive an
impartation and suddenly be raising the dead. Miracles,
healings and signs and wonders come to new levels of
expression as we mature and grow into our faith. The Bible
even speaks of this when our eyes are open to see it. Recently
I became aware of three descriptive terms of miracles. The
bible speaks of beginning miracles, notable miracles and
unusual miracles. Jesus performed a beginning miracle in
Cana of Galilee when he turned the water into wine in John
2:1-12. In these verses we are told that only the servants who
obeyed the Lord’s commands and his disciples knew what had
happened. This miracle was said to be for the purpose of
beginning to break the spirit of unbelief from his disciples and
show them his glory.
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of
Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples
believed in Him.
(John 2:11)
The purpose of “beginning miracles” is to bring the church out
of unbelief and into a new faith realm of God. These kinds of
miracles are only for a smaller group of people and are
designed to switch and change the hearts of people to begin to
believe the Lord.
I remember these beginning miracles. People were healed of
sinus problems, small broken bones in their fingers and the
like. The greater things came but only after we begin to
cultivate an atmosphere of faith for the greater to occur.
This is what Jesus was doing with these first disciples in
Cana of Galilee. He was introducing them to the
supernatural aspect of who He was and is.
The next kind of miracle mentioned in the Bible is notable
miracles. This is found in Acts 4:16 where Peter and John have
healed the man at the gate beautiful as they were entering for a
time of prayer. The religious leaders themselves attest to the
fact that this man had been lame from birth but now was able to
walk, leap and give glory to the Lord:
…“What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a
notable miracle has been done through them is
evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot
deny it.
A notable miracle is one that cannot be denied. It cannot be
explained away. There is an obvious miraculous change and
people are forced to decide what they are going to do
with it. These are the miracles from which the gospel can and
should be preached so people can come to know the Lord.
This is exactly what Peter and John did as this miracle
occurs. So must we. I remember the time when I had just
returned from an overseas ministry trip. We had seen the
Lord do great things.
I was sitting in a line to pick up my children from their school as
the Lord begin to speak to me from Ezekiel chapter 47. This
chapter records a river that became deeper and deeper as the
prophet Ezekiel was led into water. First the river was ankle
deep, next knee deep, then waist deep, and finally a river to
swim in. The Lord used this account to say to me that if I would
do two things He would continuously measure out new levels of
the healing anointing to me. The first was to always give Him all
the glory for everything that happened. All the glory is His and
He will not share it with another. (Isaiah 42:8) The second was
that whatever level of healing power that I am walking in, I must
use it for the purpose of evangelism. Notable miracles are for
the purpose of winning people to the Lord. I have found that
evangelism is easy when miracles, signs and wonders are
present.
The last type of miracle that we should expect to move into is
unusual miracles. Paul began to function in these in Acts 19:11-
12. The Lord used aprons and handkerchiefs that had been on
Paul’s body and carried the anointing to heal and deliver sick
and demonized people:
Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of
Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were
brought from his
body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil
spirits went out of them.
As these pieces of cloth were laid on people, they were healed
and set free. This unusual miracle caused a mighty revival to
break out in Ephesus as everyone heard the gospel and the
name of Jesus was glorified. (Acts 19:17) Unusual miracles
are miracles that are not the usual. In other words, we will see
things that we have not seen before and it will press past the
hardened hearts of people and cause them to stand in awe of
the Lord we serve. It is time for unusual miracles to occur and
the name of Jesus Christ to be magnified.
I point to these three descriptive terms of miracles to simply
make the point that there are varying levels of the supernatural
that we can and should grow into. This is also seen in the
ministry of Jesus. The scripture records Jesus raising three
people from the dead. These are the only ones recorded,
although I am sure there were many others.
Remember that only a small fraction of all that Jesus did is
written about in scripture. (John 21:25) Yet the Holy Spirit
chose to only tell us about three separate events. Each one is
more powerful than the previous one showing the increase in
the maturing of even Jesus in His earthly ministry of power and
might.
We must remember that when Jesus walked the earth, He did
not touch His Godhood, though He could have. But He
understood to have done so would have forfeited His right to be
the Savior and Redeemer of God’s creation. Adam the man lost
the creation of God and Jesus the Man had to win it back, not
through His powers as God but rather through
the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in Him as a man.
Because of this He had to learn how to use those powers
and increase in them Himself.
The first resurrection from the dead that Jesus accomplished
was with Jairus’ daughter. In Mark chapter 5, Jesus went with
this man to heal his sick daughter. As they are on the way,
some from Jairus’ house met him and told him that there was
no need for Jesus to come because his daughter was dead.
Marks 5:35-36 records the discourse that occurred:
While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler
of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is
dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” As soon as
Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the
ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
Jesus told Jairus that he should not be afraid, but simply keep
believing. When Jesus arrived at the house He was very
selective with whom He allowed to enter the place where the
dead girl lie. He and His chosen company entered the room and
Jesus spoke to the dead girl and she arose. Mark 5:41-42:
Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her,
“Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to
you, arise.” 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked,
for she was twelve years of age. And they were
overcome with great amazement.
From the scenario that surrounded this resurrection it is clear
that the girl has been dead only a few minutes by the
time Jesus reached her. This is the first recorded raising of the
dead performed by Jesus.
The second resurrection is the raising of the son of the widow of
Nain. We find this account in Luke 7:11-17. Jesus and a large
crowd entered a small city as they journeyed. As they entered
this city, another large crowd is departing in a funeral
procession. The two companies of people meet near the city
gates. As they did, Jesus saw the tears of the widow who had
just lost her only son and was moved with compassion. He
stopped the procession and spoke to the dead man and
everyone witnessed his resurrection. Luke 7:14-15 tells us:
Then He came and touched the open coffin, and
those who carried him stood still. And He said,
“Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was
dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented
him to his mother.
Whereas Jairus’ daughter had been dead for a few moments,
this widow’s son had been dead for a few hours. In those days,
there was no embalming, so when someone died they were
buried within a few hours or as quickly as coffins and other
arrangements could be made. Jesus stepped to the next
dimension in the raising of the dead. He had gone from the
power to pull someone out of death that had been dead only
minutes to pulling the next person out of death who had been
there a few hours.
The last resurrection from the dead that we see in Jesus’
ministry is the raising of Lazarus in John chapter 11.
Lazarus had become sick with something that would cause his
death. His sisters, Mary and Martha, send for Jesus to
come and heal him. Instead of leaving immediately, He lingered
where He was for several more days. When Jesus knew by the
Spirit that Lazarus was dead, He announced it was time to go.
Jesus and His disciples arrived at the home of Mary and Martha
and found the grieving process of family and friends well under
way. Through a process of events Jesus asked to be taken to
where they buried Lazarus. When He arrived at the tomb, He
found that Lazarus had been in the grave for four full days and
was in a decaying state. Jesus commanded the stone that
covered the tomb’s mouth to be rolled away. As they rolled the
stone away, Jesus stood before this place of death and
mourning and spoke the word of command for Lazarus to arise
and come back to life. John 11:43- 44 tell us the results of this
act of faith and power:
Now when He had said these things, He cried with a
loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had
died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes,
and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to
them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
After four days in the tomb, a decaying dead man’s body was
restored and he was brought back to life. Jesus, who started
his resurrection ministry of power with the raising of a little girl
who was dead for a few minutes, progresses to the raising of a
dead man who is dead for a few hours and finally raises
Lazarus who was dead for a few days.
Clearly there is a progressive maturing in faith and power in
Jesus’ life in the supernatural. We should expect the very
same thing in our journey.
When we understand this, we don’t become disheartened or
faint in our endeavors to operate in the supernatural realm. We
simply keep pressing and going until we see the fullness of
who Jesus is flowing through us. Our faith increases and our
anointing flows more greatly as we faithfully pursue the next
levels of miracles, signs and wonder.
Once we have received an impartation from the apostolic into
our lives, the next step is to believe that we have received
something. In the moment of impartation, there may or may not
be a sensation of something transpiring. However, I do know
that after the fact for most people, everything will seem just like
it was before. This happened to me. I definitely caught
something in an impartation time, but as life went back to
normal I didn’t feel any different. But when I heard the Lord
speak to me and tell me to begin to believe that I had received
and I would have it, things began to pop. (Mark 11:24) Faith is
always an essential if we are to see anything different and
supernatural happen in and through out lives. Isn’t it interesting
that Jesus said that signs would follow those who believed.
(Mark 16:17) He did not say signs would follow those who were
anointed or even felt anointed. Faith and believing that we have
caught something is what activates the anointing and lets it flow
with power and might. Believe that you have received
something and you will be amazed at what you have.
The last area I want to discuss concerning being equipped and
released in apostolic power to establish kingdom rule, is be
free to experiment. Signs and wonders are things we must
learn to use. When Elisha received the impartation of
the mantle from Elisha in II Kings chapter 2, he had a freedom
to experiment with that mantle that he now carried. As Elijah
was whisked \away into heaven with the chariots of fire and the
horsemen of the Lord, his mantle or anointing fell back to
Elisha. Elisha picked up this mantle, rolled it up, and stood by
the river Jordan where just a few moments prior, Elijah had
struck with this same mantle and divided so they could cross
over on dry ground. Now Elijah is gone to heaven, but his
mantle is now in the possession of Elisha. The question was:
would it work for him as it has worked for Elijah? As Elisha
returned and stood on the bank of the river he rolled up the
mantle, struck the waters, just like Elijah had done and uttered
the cry, “Where is the God of Elijah?” II Kings 2:14 tells us the
aftermath of this act of faith:
Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from
him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the
LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck
the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha
crossed over.
As Elisha experimented with what he was carrying, the waters
separated and divided. What had worked for Elijah now worked
for him. This is what we too must do. We must take up the
mantle of the anointing and began to experiment with it. We will
probably have some failures, but also some glorious successes.
One thing is for sure, if we don’t try nothing will happen. We
must pick up the mantle, roll it up and strike the waters with it.
That means we take what we have received, begin to pray for
the sick, believe God and watch the anointing work.
Experimentation is very necessary to learn to use what we now
carry.
This is what the early disciples did. Jesus had given 70 of
them an impartation of the anointing and had sent them out to
use it. As they come back in Luke 10:17, notice what they say
in amazement:
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord,
even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
“Even the demons are subject to us in your name” was their
amazed cry. They had taken the imparted anointing and had
experimented with it and came away awe-struck at what was
actually on their lives. So will we as we begin to be equipped.
Signs and wonders are for all who belong to the Lord. We may
not all have a ministry of signs and wonders where the
multitudes are swayed and won to the Lord, but we should all
as believers function from apostolic DNA and declare His
majesty and power.
Jesus prophesied of Himself and those who would belong to
Him through Isaiah the prophet that we are built for signs and
wonders. Isaiah 8:18 again declares to us:
Here am I and the children whom the LORD has given
me!
We are for signs and wonders in
Israel From the LORD of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
This is our portion. This is our mandate. This is our territory
to have, to function in and to walk in. Let’s get apostolically
connected and become a part of something
that not only gets people healed and saved, but moves powers
of darkness from out of regions and territories. Through the
release of the supernatural let apostolic dominion take root in
areas and states and even nations. Not only will people get well
and live who might have otherwise died, not only will people be
born again that might otherwise have been lost, but demonic
hierarchy will be dismantled and neutralized so that the kingdom
of God can come and be established. As this occurs, we will not
have just a few folks getting healed, but social transformation
occur as culture is freed from demonic strangle holds. We are
His vessels, let’s go for it!
