ABSTRACT

Both internal and external factors play a vital role in influencing the drives and motivation of an

individual. In this study, the researchers examined the factors attributing to mass attending

practices of the students in Divine Word College of Calapan. The main objective of this study is

to determine if both internal and external factors influence the students’ motivation to attend the

mass and to observe the proper etiquette while participating in the said religious activity. This

study included thirty (30) students from different year and program. Using a quantitative

approach through Spearman rho (for ranking) and Pearson r (for correlating), the findings of this

study revealed that there is a weak correlation between the factors (internal and external) and the

mass attending practices of the students.

Keywords: internal factors, external factors, attribution, motivation, mass attending practices
INTRODUCTION

Religious and spiritual practices play a significant role in shaping an individual’s holistic

development through giving enlightenment to one’s spiritual perspective and values. In the

liturgy of the New Covenant, every liturgical action, especially the Eucharist and the sacraments,

is an encounter between Christ and the Church (CCC 1097). The Holy Mass is considered by the

Catholics as the highest form of prayer that one can offer. The celebration of Mass in school may

function as a means of maintaining the memory of Catholic faith tradition. This serves as a

reminder of the schools’ values and teachings, instilling moral and spiritual guidance in students’

lives. By gathering to celebrate the Eucharist, students deepen the understanding of the faith,

strengthen their bonds with one another, and develop a lifelong sense of belonging to the Church.

The main objective of every school mass is to develop the love that each attendee has for Christ

and for other people. (Diocese of Westminster, 2020).

At the 6th Philippine Conference for the New Evangelization (PCNE) in Manila, it was

acknowledged that young Filipino Catholics yearned to find a Church that would accept them,

strengthen, and enhance their faith and spiritual lives (Lucenion, 2019). Being enrolled in a

Catholic academic institution, whereas some institutions typically tie student identity to

academic achievement, Catholic schools have the added dimension of religious faith and

practices which not only enhances the students’ academic skills but also forms their values and

spirituality. Catholic schools have an obligation to support students in the formation of their

religious convictions (Russell, 2021). A way to ensure that having different demographics and

own practices whenever they attend mass do not serve as hindrance to the students’ inclusion,

participation in such religious activities is highly encouraged. It is essential that attendees at

Masses attended by kids and students participate actively in the liturgy (Diocese of Westminster,
2020). One of the institution’s ways of developing the students’ holistic growth is through the

attendance and active participation in the said activities. It provides the students to reflect on

their lives, cultivate a moral compass, and connect something greater than themselves. This

spiritual practice enhances their personal growth and contributes to their development as well-

rounded individuals. However, celebrating the Holy Mass in schools is indeed different from that

in the Church and other religious spaces. This difference in environment upon celebrating the

Holy Mass may lead to both positive and negative actions and behaviors from the students. Both

internal and external factors affect the way we achieve self-control whenever we are attending

the Holy Mass.

College is the time for one to prepare for their future career, explore more about themselves and

their personal growth – one out of many ways to achieve personal growth is through building our

spiritual self. According to Matlock 2018 “Your spiritual life will determine your character, your

perspective, and the way you relate to the world. Before moving on to create personal success

and growth, you must first understand the value of feeding your spirit”.

Whereas attending the Holy Mass with proper etiquette is indeed important for an individual’s

spiritual growth and for the Mass to be solemnly celebrated, the researchers have observed that

the mass attending practices of college students portrays both positive and negative actions

because of several reasons. These observed actions have urged the researchers to determine what

are the factors that attributes to their mass attending practices. This research paper aims to know

if internal factors specifically one’s spiritual belief, boredom, problems, gratefulness, feelings,

and self-fulfillment alongside with external factors such as peers, school requirement, religion,

parental influence, incentives, favorite priest, and organization they belong to will attribute to

their mass attending practices.

Moreover, this research paper specifically used Attribution Theory proposed by Fritz Heider

(1958). This psychological framework explores how individuals interpret and explain the causes

of their own behavior and the behavior of others. It suggests that people tend to attribute causes

to events or behaviors based on internal or external factors. Internal and external attribution are

the two main types of attribution. Internal attribution occurs when individuals attribute the cause

of behavior to personal or internal factors. External attribution occurs when individuals attribute

the cause of behavior to situational factors or external circumstances beyond their control.

This research paper focuses on determining the factors attributing to mass attending practices of

the students in Divine Word College of Calapan through using quantitative approach whereas,

Spearman Rho was used for ranking of the variables while Pearson r was used for correlation.

These tests have led the researchers to determine which internal and external factors strongly

influence the motivation of students to observe the proper mass attending practices.

INTERNAL FACTORS

Internal factors are shaped by an individual’s thoughts, emotions, personal beliefs, motivations,

and values that influence how a person will behave, come up with a decision, and interact with

the environment they are in. As Catholics, church attendance, participation, and fellowship

should be regular aspects of a believer’s life. Christians are not "required" to attend church every

week, but it is expected of them to want to worship God, hear from Him, and spend time with

other believers. (Allison, 2012). Noting the typical one-hour duration, the Holy Mass has been

observed by the researchers as a factor influencing attendance, that it tempts people to attend

simply to fill an hour rather than solely for religious devotion. According to Zhen et al. (2019),

several studies have demonstrated the powerful impact that religious rituals and beliefs can have
on followers' choices and actions, including their inclination to revisit hallowed locations.

Throughout history and into the present, men have used their religious beliefs and practices—

such as prayers, sacrifices, rituals, meditations, and other practices—to express their desire for

God in a variety of ways. These forms of religious expression, despite the ambiguities they often

bring with them, are so universal that one may well call man a religious being (CCC 28).

Christians may find peace in the knowledge that they are not suffering in silence. When things

are tough, the church can provide us strength and encouragement. A sense of community and

connection can be provided by the Church to bereaved individuals in addition to prayers and

comforting words (McCook, 2022). We express our gratitude to God by taking part in the Holy

Mass, praising and worshiping Him verbally and musically, and by humble prayer. Expressing

gratitude to God at the start of every week is an excellent way to build our faith and uplift our

spirits (Galeon, n.d.). Going to church offers a framework for developing a relationship with God

(Michaelson, et. al, 2015).

EXTERNAL FACTORS

External factors are anything physical, social, or cultural aspects in an individual’s environment

that influences a person’s behavior. According to McGrath (2009), intrinsic orientation refers to

the "deeply held individual attitudes toward religion". This category arises from the depths of the

personal attitude of the church towards religious affiliations. Maltby added that the life of the

church in this group is motivated from their religion (Motivated by religion). The viewpoint held

by many younger Catholics is that our parents must take us to church every week just so we can

attend mass, just like what our grandparents did to our parents (Cabal, 2022). According to

Francis., et al, (2016), positive attitudes and consistent attendance at mass are more strongly
influenced by having friends at church. Based on their experience, background, and religious

heritage, students participate in all faith assemblies to the extent that they are capable of.

Students who have received First Communion at a Catholic church are encouraged to share in

the Eucharist during school Masses. Attendance at all school functions, including Masses, is

required for all students. (EICS, 2014). Okyireh et al. (2020) discovered that preaching style is

important in promoting church engagement. When members evaluate sermons and find them to

be relevant, their willingness to attend church on a regular and consistent basis grows. Appiah et

al. (2013) also found that preaching styles encourage members to visit the Church frequently.

According to Hubert (2018), Churchgoers embrace current preaching because it meets their

needs. According to Haskell et al. (2016), Churchgoers switch from one church to another

because of uninteresting sermons.

Research Question

This research sought to find out the mass attending practices of the students in Divine Word

College of Calapan. Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What are the levels of mass attending motivation of the students in terms of

internal and external factors?

2. What is the extent of mass attending practices of the students?

3. Is there a relationship between factors and motivation?

Theoretical Framework

Attribution theory proposed by psychologist Fritz Heider (1958), is a psychological framework

that explores how individuals interpret and explain the causes of their own behavior and the

behavior of others. It suggests that people tend to attribute causes to events or behaviors based on

internal or external factors. Internal and external attribution are the two main types of attribution.

Internal attribution occurs when individuals attribute the cause of behavior to personal or internal

factors. External attribution occurs when individuals attribute the cause of behavior to situational

factors or external circumstances beyond their control.

In the context of mass attendance among students at Divine Word College of Calapan, this

theoretical framework explores how internal and external factors influence their motivations for

attending mass. Attending mass can be attributed to internal factors including spiritual belief,

boredom, personal problems, building relationship with God, showing gratefulness, feeling at

peace when in church/chapel, and having a sense of fulfillment when doing so. It can be

attributed also to external factors such as peers, school requirements, religion, strong family

influence, incentives, favorite priest, and organization which an individual belongs to.

By correlating mass attendance motivations with attribution theory, this theoretical framework

helps us understand the connection of internal and external factors to the motivations of the

students. It seeks to find out whether between internal and external have high causality for the

motivations or both variables interplay with the motivations of an individual. It provides insights

into how individuals attribute their reasons for attending mass, whether to internal factors related

to personal beliefs and fulfillment or external factors influenced by social, familial, or

environmental pressures. This framework can guide future research in understanding the

complexities of religious behavior and motivations among college students.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 describes the conceptual framework of the study wherein it shows motivation and

practices as variables.

The researchers seek to find out the conduct and the practices of students prior to attending mass

at the institution. As well as to investigate what internal and external factors contribute to the

mass attending practices of the students in Divine Word College of Calapan. The internal factors

include spiritual belief, boredom, personal problems building relationships with God, showing

gratefulness, feeling at peace when in Chapel, and having a sense of fulfillment. However,

external factors include peers, as a requirement in school, religion, family influence, incentives,

favorite priest and organization they belong in.

Research Hypothesis

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant relationship between the external factors and the

mass attending practices of the students in Divine Word College of Calapan.

METHODOLOGY

Research Participants

This research used convenience sampling techniques to reach out to participants who are readily

available after the mass. This also allows the researchers to acquire respondents and to gather

data efficiently. The data collection included 30 random students in Divine Word College of

Calapan.

Research Instruments

The study was conducted in the chapel at Divine Word College of Calapan. In conducting the

study, the researchers observed the mass practices of students. After the mass, the researchers

provided a survey questionnaire to the students in order to analyze the certain behaviors they

showed during the mass.

Motivation Self-made Questionnaires. To measure the motivations of students, a 14-item

questionnaire with responses on a 4-point likert scale was made (4= strongly agree, 3= agree, 2=

disagree, 1= strongly disagree). This scale comprises a 7-item questions in each two sub-

variables like internal factors which influence the students feeling and thoughts in attending mass

and external factors which includes the decision of the students in partaking mass ceremony. The

questionnaires were used by the students to rate their motivations in attending mass.

Practice Self-made Questionnaire. To understand the link of the practices of the church, a

questionnaire was made to derive the active engagement of students in mass practices that

includes a 7-item variable and is also a 4-point likert scale (4=always, 3= often, 2= seldom, 1=

never). The scales were used to determine whether the students are consistent in participating in

attending the mass.

Data Gathering Procedure

This study wanted to understand how students of Divine Word College of Calapan (DWCC)

behave when they attend mass. After the approval of the research title, the researchers have

conducted an observation through attending mass for 2 days. Through this observation, the

researchers were able to determine some factors and use it to formulate survey

questions. Participants were provided with structured questionnaires containing a series of

closed-ended questions, presented in a clear and concise format. The questionnaires were

administered to the participants and the responses were recorded directly onto the survey forms.

The use of survey questionnaires ensured standardized data collection. Additionally, participants

were assured of anonymity and confidentiality, encouraging honest and candid responses. They

were instructed not to write their name on the questionnaire.

Data Analysis Procedure

This research employed a quantitative approach and descriptive-correlational design to

accomplish the researcher’s prime objective of measuring the motivations of students in

attending mass and understanding the link of the practices of the church in participating in

attending the mass.

The researchers organized all the data collected from the survey questionnaires. Spearman Rho

was used for ranking of the variables while Pearson r was used for correlation.

Ethical Considerations

This paper ensured that the ethical standards of research are followed through giving informed

consent to participants which was included in the survey form. The survey form also included the

title and authors of the research being conducted. The anonymity of the participants is observed
through only asking the respondents' year, program and age. It is also stated in the survey form

that all answers and the identity of the respondents will be kept anonymous and confidential. The

consent and answers of the respondents were confirmed and validated through their signature at

the last part of the survey form. Paraphrasing was done and proper citations were also observed

all throughout the research paper.

‘always’ as a response to mass attending processes. Also, item no. 7 is the only item which

presents ‘often’ as a response. The scores indicate that students conform to the proper etiquette

of the mass, with items 1-6 as very high extent and item 7 as high extent.

4. Is there a significant relationship between the internal factors and external factors and the

Internal and 0.2921 8.53% Positive Weak 0.5250 Not significant

Practices Correlation

The study found that both factors, internal and external factors, are not significant with the

practices of the students. Peers, school requirements, religion, strong family influence,

incentives, favorite priest and organization as well as belief, boredom, personal problems,

building relationships, showing gratefulness, feeling at peace when in church and having a sense
of fulfillment have a weak correlation with practices. Although the variables present a positive

direction, the degree to which they correlated is weak. Therefore, we can say that external and

internal factors may affect the motivations of the students in attending mass but the connection is

not very strong.

DISCUSSION

The study conducted by the researchers at Divine Word College of Calapan wanted to explore

the factors influencing the mass attending practices of the students, both internal and external

factors. The study also aimed to examine the relationship between these factors and mass

attending practices.

From the result, it showed that the students have internal and external factors that motivate them

to attend mass in Divine Word College of Calapan. Fritz Heider (1958), stated in his theory

called attribution theory, individuals interpret and explain the causes of their own behavior and

the behavior of others. It suggests that people tend to attribute causes of their behaviors based on

internal and external factors. However, based on the outcome of the data gathered, external

factors and internal factors do not significantly contribute to the mass attending practices of the

student thus far having a positive and weak correlation.

There are several possible explanations for the insignificant results between the variables. One

possibility is that the internal and external factors of motivations of the students is not sufficient

to claim their attendance in mass as there are other variables which may correlate with the

attending mass practices. Additionally, the sample size of the study might have been insufficient

to detect the effect on the variables. Further, the study presents data which indicate that while

there are some aspects that are high in motivation, the direction of which it influences do not

affect the entirety of why the students attend mass.

Despite the lack of significant findings, this study provides valuable information that students

who attend the Holy Mass show practices that might have a weak effect but still influences their

motivations. It highlights that despite having several internal factors that might possibly motivate

their mass attending practices, not all of it highly attributes to their mass attending practices.
Internal factors or basically the things inside an individual’s mind that affects their thoughts,

feelings, and behavior, not significantly affects the practices of students. The three factors that

motivated very highly one’s practices are: (1) to show gratefulness for what they have, (2) to

build their relationship with God, and (3) because they feel at peace whenever they do so. On

the other hand, the weak correlation of external factors also reveals that there are only some but

not all external factors attributed to the students’ mass attending practices. External factors or the

influences from outside sources that affect the way we think, feel, and behave. The three factors

that motivated very highly one’s practices are: (1) because of their religion, (2) because of

strong family influence, and (3) because of peers. According to Cornelio (2020), being religious

is one of the characteristics of every Filipino. This statement explains that the reason why there

is a weak correlation between both the internal and external factors and mass attending practices

of students is because religiosity is already considered a part of the Filipinos’ nature as one of

their characteristics. Moreover, the pervasive nature of religiosity in Filipino society implies that

attending mass may be influenced by cultural norms and expectations rather than solely by

individual beliefs and values or environmental factors. Therefore, the weak correlation may stem

from the complex interplay between cultural identity, social influences, and personal beliefs,

highlighting the complex nature of mass attending practices within the Filipino context. From the

results, we can consider that the variables, motivation and practices have a slight tendency to

move towards the same direction, but it is not a very reliable trend. Some of the factors may

influence and some may not. Therefore, the extent to which students are motivated to attend

mass is moderate.

Although Attribution theory suggests that external and internal factors contribute to the

understanding of reasoning for students' perception of attribution, motivation does not directly
influence the outcome of practices around us. In conclusion, the results contribute to the

ongoing exploration of other factors influencing the study and pave the way for researchers to

improve the paper.

The implication of the results suggests that while there are various motivations for attending

mass among students at the Divine Word College of Calapan, such as building relationship with

God, feeling at peace, and showing gratefulness, these motivations do not strongly correlate with

their actual attendance behavior. Factors like peer influence, family influence, and personal

problems also play a role but do not strongly determine attendance patterns. Overall, both

internal and external factors have a weak correlation with students' mass attendance practices,

indicating a complex interplay of motivations and behaviors.

Recommendation

Being enrolled in a Catholic academic institution, students should take some time to reflect on

their reasons for attending the Holy Mass celebrated within the school premises for it both

positively and negatively influences their attending practices. Based on the findings and the

conclusions the following recommendations are hereby offered: (1) The researchers recommend

future researchers to explore and use other theoretical frameworks to determine other factors

influencing students' mass attending practices. Additionally, employing different sampling

techniques can yield more concrete and comprehensive results that can be used for further

investigation/research. (2) Future researchers can consider incorporating qualitative research

methods alongside quantitative data to gain deeper insights into students' motivations and

experiences related to mass attendance. (3) To further provide valuable insights into the long-
term impact of various factors in attending mass, the researchers recommend future researchers

to conduct longitudinal studies to track how students' motivations and mass attendance practices

evolve over time. (4) Lastly, future research could involve a larger, more diverse population to

ensure the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, researchers could explore further to

discover other factors that can contribute to the personal and spiritual well-being of individuals,

influencing their attendance at masses.
