1. Draw the polar plot for G(s) given by
1 + 2s
G(s) =
1 − 2s
Explain your solution. Also, establish the shape of the plot by a formal proof. (5)
2. Calculate analytically the gain and phase margins for the system whose open-loop transfer function is given
by
2500
G(s) =
s(s + 5)(s + 50)
3. Consider a minimum-phase system whose asymptotic Bode Magnitude plot is shown in Figure 1. Determine
the transfer function G(s) of the system. Provide adequate explanation. (5)
4. Draw the Nyquist plot for the control system with the open-loop transfer function
K
G(s)H(s) = .
(s + 1)(s2 + s + 4)
Using the Nyquist stability criterion, determine the range of K for the stability of the closed-loop system. (5)
5. It is required to design a series lead compensator for the system shown in Figure 2 using the root-locus
approach.
(a) Find the damping ratio and the settling time for the system assuming the 2% criterion (ts = 4/(ξωn )).
(b) Modify the closed-loop poles so that the damping ratio remains the same and the settling time becomes half
of the initial value. Calculate the desired location of the closed-loop poles (meeting the specification).
Figure 2: System with Unity Feedback
(c) Determine the angle that the lead compensator should provide and
(d) Obtain a location for the pole and zero of the compensator that meets the angle requirement. (4)
Sketch the root locus (by hand; not using any computer tools). Explain different parts of the root locus
(referring to the appropriate rules). Show also all the relevant calculations. (6)
