MIXED CONDITIONALS

There are four basic types of conditional sentences in English: zero, first, second and third.
Mixed conditionals combine the second and third conditional.

If I practise a lot, I always win. (zero)


If I practise a lot, I will win. (first)
If I practised a lot, I would win. (second)
If I had practised a lot, I would have won. (third)
I I had practised a lot last month, I would win now. (mixed)

There are four main kinds of conditionals:

 The Zero Conditional:


(if + present simple, ... present simple)
If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

 The First Conditional:


(if + present simple, ... will + infinitive)
If it rains tomorrow, we'll go to the cinema.

 The Second Conditional:
(if + past simple, ... would + infinitive)
If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.

(if + past perfect, ... would + have + past participle)
If I had gone to bed early, I would have caught the train.

Exercise 1 - Zero conditional

Complete the sentences with verbs in brackets.

Peter, what do you do if your parents are at home?


If my parents .................. at home at weekends, I have to help with housework.

If she .................. at home, I wash the car or work in the garden with my dad.

Exercise 2. Rewrite the following sentences using the Second


Conditional

Example: I’m not rich. I don’t live in a big house.

1. He eats a lot of sweets. He’s fat.

2. She smokes forty cigarettes a day. She coughs a lot.

3. He does not understand Portuguese. He won’t work in Brazil.

4. They don’t have a garden. They don’t grow vegetables.

5. I don’t have a boat. I won’t sail around the world.

Exercise 3. Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense to form either a
First or a Second Conditional Clause.

2. Give me Peter's letter. If I (see) him, I (give) it to him.

3. I have to work about 80 hours a week, so I'm very busy. But if I (have)

Exercise 4. Complete the conditional sentences with the verbs in


brackets (with either the first, second, third or mixed conditionals).
