Tutorial 04

1. The diameters of a pipe at the section 1 and 2 are 10 cm and 15 cm respectively. Find the
discharge through the pipe if the velocity of water flowing through the pipe at section 1 is 5
m/s .Determine the velocity at section 2. (2.22 m/s)

2. A 30 cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches in to two pipes of diameters 20 cm and 15

cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 30 cm diameter pipe is 2.5 m/s, find the
discharge in this pipe. Also determine the velocity in 15 cm pipe if the average velocity in 20
cm diameter pipe is 2 m/s.(6.44 m/s)

3. For the frictionless flow through the siphon shown below, determine the discharge and
pressure heads at A and B.The pipe diameter is 200 mm and the nozzle exit diameter is 150
mm.

4. Water is flowing through a pipe of 5 cm diameter under a pressure of 29.43 N/cm2 (gauge)
and with mean velocity of 2.0 m/s. Find the total head or total energy per unit weight of the
water at a cross-section, which is 5 m above the datum line.

5. A pipe through which water is flowing, is having diameters,20 cm and 10 cm at the cross-
sections 1 and 2 respectively. The velocity of water at section 1 is given 4. 0 m/s. Find the
velocity head sections 1 and 2 and also rate of discharge.(125.6 l/s)

6. The water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 20 cm and 10 cm at sections a1 and 2
respectively. The rate of flow through pipe is 35 l/s. The section 1 is 6 m above datum and
section 2 is 4 m above datum. If the pressure at section 1 is 39.24 N/cm2, find the intensity of
pressure at section 2. (40.27 N/cm2)

7. Water is flowing through a pipe having diameter 300 mm and 200 mm at the bottom and
upper end respectively. The intensity of pressure at the bottom end is 24.525 N/cm2 and the
pressure at the upper end is 9.81 Ncm2.Determine the difference in datum head if the rate of
flow through pipe is 40 l/s. (13.70 m)

8. Siphon having the 10 cm (diameter) shown in Fig. is filled with water and discharging freely
into the atmosphere through a 5 cm (diameter) nozzle.
Assume frictionless flow and find,
a) the discharge in cubic meter per second ( 0.0194 cms) and,
b) the pressure heads at C (-0.31 m of water), D (-3.31 m of water), E (-0.31 m of water)
and F (4.69 m of water)

9. A pipe of diameter 400 mm carries water at a velocity of 25 m/s. The pressure at the points A
and B are given as 29.43 N/cm2 and 22.563 N/cm2 respectively while the datum head at A and
B are 28 m and 30 m. Find the loss of head between A and B ( 5. 0 m).

10. Figure shows an inclined Venturimeter, which installed in a 20 cm (diameter) water pipe line
and has a throat diameter of 10 cm. Water flows in the upward direction. For a manometer
reading of 25 cm of mercury, what is the discharge in cubic meter per second? (0.064 )
